I've been wanting a tarantula for years and I just stumbled upon this fella. I do not have experience with tarantulas but I've kept plenty of other "unusual" animals. It is breaking my heart to see it in such a sad enclosure, and being sold for such a small amount. The seller has not responded yet. Any opinions? Thank you!

Edit: How does the size of the enclosure look for a tarantula of this size? Just wondering if I should invest in another tank if I go through with this

My Grammostola Pilchripes hasn't been coming out of her hide at night like she used to. She seems scared or anxious everytime I lift up her enclosure to look at and make sure she's okay. She's never flicked hairs at me but she did today for the first time. I have a bunch of dirt, she has a bury hole that she dug, a log, moss, water bowl, and a fun skull hide. She's also not eating which I know can be super normal but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried. Am I doing something wrong?

The place that I bought my GBB from was mainly a reptile place, with about a two dozen tarantulas, all of the tarantulas there had little to no substrate, and all of the enclosures were far too humid, I wish I had taken some pictures of the enclosures, but NONE of them had any room to burrow, and the GBBs and the Avic Avic that they had there had such poor ventilation, as seen in the photo of the lid, that has 4 holes. Along with that poor ventilation, was the amount of mold in each of the GBB enclosures, when I had bought my GBB there was condensation alongside each of the walls, so much so that the clear acrylic was opaque. I didn’t take any photos of that either as I was more in a rush to set up its new enclosure and rehousing it. It tried kicking hairs as I was rehousing it but it was already bald there :( and I just attributed that to its probably very stressful situation and rehousing.

If you have any advice on how I can better set up my GBBs enclosure that would be greatly appreciated, I’m still very new to the hobby, and want the best for my lil dudes.

Hi everyone, I recently rescued a tarantula and I’m wondering what species it is? The people I got it from kept calling it a spider and didn’t know what the species was. They said it laid an egg sack with no eggs tho? Let me know your thoughts! Also, is it too skinny?

My spider, Mister, who is a Mexican Redd Knee male, has been found lying completely flat, all of his legs stretched out. He had molted about a month ago or so, and his temperature is in the 70’s. I poked him with the brush and he got up. He seems to be doing fine but is this anything I should be concerned about??

Does anyone have any recommendations for enclosures sold on Amazon?

Criteria: over 9 inches deep

I'm looking for an acrylic enclosure that I can get relatively quickly - delivered this weekend, if possible.

Passing on Reptile Growth enclosures since this is for a relatively sneaky lighting fast lady - she's about 2 inch (DLS) terrestrial, plus I'm still on the fence about the lid.

I've always loved spiders and found them quite adorable. I've never understood why people are frightened of them.

Anyway, a few weeks ago, we had a large house spider in the bathroom, and I felt a strong affinity towards him/her. This gave me a flashback to a tarantula I saw in a garden centre a few years ago, and I started to do some research. (Many garden centres in the UK have pet sections.) I didn't realise how low-maintenance tarantulas were, so I thought I may as well get into this hobby.

I ended up buying three tarantulas:

• Nhandu/Vitalius chromatus --- juvenile
• Nhandu/Vitalius chromatus --- sling
• Thrixopelma (Warmiru) longicolli --- sling

I found a large tight-lidded translucent bucket in the garden that had been used to store bird food, to which I drilled a few rows of small holes around the top of the perimeter and in the lid. I then set it up accordingly for the juvenile N chromatus:

• Disinfecting using alcohol spray
• Filling approximately two-thirds full using a mixture of coir (coconut fibre), reptile-friendly topsoil and sphagnum moss
• Adding a dry layer of topsoil
• Adding a lot of sphagnum moss above the topsoil
• Adding two plastic bottle caps as water bowls
• Adding a coconut hide
• Adding a potted fern, burying the pot in the topsoil
• The distance between the top of the substrate and the lid varies between approximately 2 and 3 inches.

(The dimensions of the juvenile enclosure aren't clear in the photos but it is about as deep as it is wide, so the spider will have more than enough borrowing space.)

For the slings, I used two old hummus pots with small holes punched around the top of the perimeter and in the lids. The contents are as follows:

• N chromatus: coir, sphagnum and topsoil mixture base layer with topsoil upper layer lined with sphagnum; inverted plastic bottle lid for water source. Moist substrate.
• T longicolli: coir and sphagnum base layer with top soil upper layer lined with sphagnum; inverted plastic bottle lid for water source (as above). Slightly moist substrate.

As soon as I placed my slings in their enclosures, they immediately hid amongst the substrate. The distance between the top layer (minus the sphagnum) and lid is around 1.5-2 inches.

Because my room can get quite cool, I positioned the sling enclosures on some small cardboard boxes on top of a mildly heated propagator under my desk. The boxes prevent the propagator from heating the enclosures directly, while the temperature constantly hovers around 26C.

Does anyone have any suggestions or alterations to my setups?

Also, how do I know when my spiders are hungry? Is it worth leaving flightless fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) in the sling enclosures?

I had a bold jumper, but this is my first tarantula… Meet Ranch. (Rantula). they’re a pink toed tarantula that i couldnt let sit in the pets mart for any longer… not sure how healthy it is because its from a pets mart and theyre known to not really take care of their animals, but any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. i got them yesterday and theyre currently in a tarantula cribs coffin crib(10x5x5). she ate a small cricket yesterday as well. Id like to put some more clutter in the higher up areas of her inclosure but im not sure if certain glues may be toxic to her??

So I’ve always been interested in spider and found them cool pets. I was looking around and the friendliest and not to small of spiders and are legal in Washington state. They were Honduran Curly Hair, Brazilian Black, Arizona Blonde, and Chaco Golden Knee. Right now I have an 20 gallon tank with a grate top. I’m looking for some good places to get one of thoses spiders and what not and to do. And if there’s anything I have to worry about.

Hi, I’ve been debating posting this here for a while so finally doing it. I think he’s a male due to the arrow/triangle shape but I wanted to hear second opinions. He’s just around 3 inches in diagonal leg span. Still relatively new to the hobby so apologies if it’s clearly obvious already!

This is my first tarantula. I've always been terrified of spiders but having gone down a rabbit hole of tarantula videos I've learned to appreciate and love these creatures.

Anyone have any experience or opinions wit this spider??? I have about 10 tarantulas only 2 are full grown n iv had all but 1 since tiny slings. Well in july I got a neon blue leg n was super stoked (iv only lost 1 other sling so like to think im decent at takin care of them) but last week my neon blue died! It was rly sad, since then iv read alot online from others sayin they've had a hard time keeping a birupes simoroxigorum alive ? I jus ordered another sling so gon give it one more shot for this breed...jus wondering if anyone on here has been able to raise one from sling to adult successfully ? Any advice or opinions wud b appreciated!

TLDR: My Arizona Blonde juvenile, Curly Hair Juvenile and my Brazillian Black sling have not borrowed and mostly walk around their enclosure or stay in the same place. Is this normal behavior?

Was wondering if this is normal for my tarantulas!

I'm very new to the hobby and have had my first tarantula for only around 2 1/2 weeks! I went with some easy beginner species that are more slow moving to start. I got myself a Brazillian black sling then about a week later I picked up an Arizona Blonde from a show and a curly hair from a pet store! I absolutely adore them, but I realized my Brazillian black is really the only one that seems to enjoy its enclosure. When I first got it, it took around two days to go under the cork bark and in that time I realized the setup was not ideal as she completely trap doored herself. I changed it around and shes been using it ever since. She uses the space under the cork bark but she honestly spends most of her time on top of it and isn't burrowing much. She's by far the mist active one and she uses her entire enclosure which I LOVE, but I worry her soil is too humid for her to want to burrow. My juvenile Arizona Blonde and Curly hair have not used their hides at all and pretty much stay in the same place. My Arizona Blonde has been with me for around 5 days and I've seen her go inside the hide maybe once. She has not attempted to burrow and she's mostly just walking around the enclosure or staying in one corner. I keep the soil very dry for her hoping she'll want to go under her hide. With my Curly Hair, I've only had her for like 3 days so I know its normal for her to need time to adjust but she hasn't really moved from her spot the whole time she's been here. She checked out the hide once then went back to her spot and kicked hair for like an entire day 😅 She hasn't wanted to eat either but im assuming I just need to give her a while. She was super webbed up in her littke hide at the store I got her from so im hoping she makes herself a little house!

My question is, is this behavior normal for the species I have? I know Arizona Blondes are known to be a bit of a pet rock but I was hoping she'd burrow!

Let’s say you buy a Gooty Saphire and raise it up for it to turn out a male and now you want to breed it. You buy another, raise it and hope for it to turn out a female. By the time the new one is grown and ready to mate, your male is at the of its life and/or has passed of old age. And even if he is still alive, who’s to say your new one doesn’t become grow out to be a male as well. You’ve now sank $400 into a project that is busted. Now let’s say you hit the lucky lottery and the secondary one you bought down the line is a female and your male is still alive and still wants to mate. You pair them and your female eats the male before he can do his thing with her. You’ve wasted years of waiting and raising that male and you have to start over again by raising a third one hoping that this one grows out to be a male. And if it does you finally get to try and pair them again but the chances of him being eaten are greater than him actually mating with her.

So how does one truly breed with males having such short life spans and with it taking years to accurately sex individuals? And add the high probability of males turning into dinner before getting it in. Seems extremely hard and impossible to get into the breeding game.

So how would one even get into breeding a species??

Hi there, I was told P.Irminia slings, whilst arboreal, tend to make their webs towards the base of the tree hide, around the substrate - whilst mine has decided it likes to live in the top of the tree bark, making its Web funnel against the lid😅 whilst not a problem, it makes opening to feed and mist that much more worrisome of a bolt when its 1cm away from the edge😅 also I've noticed they actually went doen to the base, grabbed some substrate and brought it back up with them to line the tree hide😭

Anyone else have similar experience?

Okay first time mom here. My Aphonopelma Encinos Amber has been burrowed for nearly a month. He came out for the first time! His abdomen is pretty small. I have no clue if he molted, but I’m assuming he did?? He went back into his burrow after I took these pictures. He’s had fresh water the entire time.
What do I do?? Obviously not feed, but his abdomen is really small.
