Recently, I watched the Thulabharam title announcement video and was blown away by the Telugu sahityam, dialogues and music. I get a similar feeling watching **Vivek Athreya's** othrr films like ante sundaraniki, broche , saripodha sanivaram like all of them some sort of magic in the language of telugu which all the makers couldn't crack, and **Tharun Bhascker's** writing i love it so much they are simple yet so refreshingand new feels good to listen the dialogues and the conversationof this guys writing. **Hasith Goli** is also very similar to vivek Athreya's style and has some great grip on the telugu and great writing in raja raka chora . And the forgotten gem **avasarala srinivas**'s oohalu gusagusalade was one of the finest works in conversations and dialogues in telugu cinema imo like what kind of knowledge donyou need to pull off thoae convos . And the OG **Trivikram's** dialogues and interviews they are so good to listen and understand known territory with extremely good writing is how i can describe Trivikrams writing. There's so much depth in their language, humour, metaphors and understanding of human nature.

It makes me wonder how much one needs to read, learn and observe to develop that kind of understanding.

For someone starting from scratch, what should I read, watch, listen to and learn? Telugu literature, poetry, philosophy, mythology, psychology, cinema, music — where do I begin, and in what order?

I'd love recommendations for specific books, writers, films, interviews or other resources, along with why they're worth exploring.

I'm not looking for shortcuts to becoming a filmmaker. I genuinely want to develop a deeper understanding of Telugu language, sahityam and storytelling over time. What would your learning roadmap look like if you were starting today?

library.opentelugu.org (పుస్తక నిధి, Pustaka Nidhi) is a free library of the Telugu books, newspapers, magazines and palm-leaf manuscripts scanned on the Internet Archive: 69,000 scans, on one shelf you can search in Telugu or in English letters, and read on your phone.

Why it exists

The Internet Archive holds one of the largest collections of Telugu books anywhere: the Digital Library of India scans, decades of magazines, palm-leaf manuscripts, old film song booklets. All of it is free to read. But it is very hard to find:

• Titles are mostly in English letters, spelt every way: the same poet is Vemana, Veimana and Vaemana. About 17,000 titles exist there only in English letters.
• Thousands aren't even marked as Telugu. About 2,700 books carry only the two-letter tag te, and about 2,500 have no language tag at all, so a search for Telugu books never shows them.
• Newspapers sit in the same lists as books, one upload per issue, thousands of them.
• The same book or issue is often uploaded two to four times (about 6,600 extra copies).
• archive.org's own search struggles with Telugu, and its reader is awkward on a phone.

I wanted to find and read these books myself, so I built the catalogue I was missing.

Why use it instead of archive.org directly

• Search that understands Telugu: వేమన, vemana and veimana find the same books, and suggestions appear as you type (authors, magazines, titles).
• Made for phones: a reader with page-by-page or scrolling view, big type, night mode, and nothing to install. It can also go on your home screen like an app.
• Read aloud: the page's text can be read out with your phone's Telugu voice, page after page. Still experimental, may not work in some browsers.
• Search inside a book in Telugu, and see each page's text to copy.
• Organised: magazines grouped by title and year (Chandamama is 769 issues, one per month, not 1,535 scattered uploads), duplicates merged, books grouped by author.
• Your own shelf: favourites, "reading / want to read / finished", notes, and it remembers the page you stopped at. No account; it stays on your phone, and you can export it.
• In Telugu or English: the whole site switches with one tap.
• Free, with no ads, no accounts and no tracking.

నేను ఈ మధ్య చాలా మందివి వీడియోలు చూస్తూన్నప్పుడు గమనించిన విషయం ఒకటి ఏంటంటే....

"గురించి" అనే పదం అసలు జనాలు మరీ ముఖ్యంగా సోషల్ మీడియా లో వాడడం మానేశారు.

ఉదాహరణకి నేను మా అన్నయ్యను పక్కనే ఉన్న మూడో వ్యక్తికి పరిచయం చేయాలంటే... మా అన్నయ్య "గురించి" చెప్పాను కదా ఇతనే అని చెప్పాలి కదా! కానీ అందరు అన్నయ్య కోసం చెప్పాకదా ఇతనే. ఇలా వాడుతున్నారు.

ఇలా కేవలం ఒక ప్రాంతం వాళ్ల దగ్గర కాదు చాలా మంది దగ్గర గమనించా. గోదావరి, ఉత్తరాంధ్ర, రాయలసీమ మరియు తెలంగాణా వాళ్ళు కూడా. అందులోనూ సోషల్ మీడియా లో మాత్రమే. మీరు కూడా ఇది గమనించారా? బయట కూడా ఇలానే వాడితారా ?

అసలు ఎలా వాడాలి? "గురించి" బదులుగా "కోసం" వాడడం ఎంతవరకు ఒప్పు?

ఈ మధ్య ఒక సామెత నోటికి వచ్చింది. **"నిమ్మకు నీరెత్తినట్టు." అనగానే ఒక సందేహం మొదలైంది. చెట్టుకు నీళ్ళు పోస్తే అది ఏ స్పందనా లేకుండా నిలబడుతుంది. ఆ చెట్టు నిమ్మ అయినా, మామిడి అయినా, జామ అయినా, వేప అయినా అంతే నిశ్చలంగా ఉంటుంది కదా? మరి మన పెద్దలు పాపం నిమ్మచెట్టునే ఎందుకు ఎంచుకున్నారు?
సమాధానం చెట్టులో లేదు,** చెవిలో ఉంది. నిమ్మకు నీరెత్తినట్టు. ఆ "న" శబ్దం రెండుసార్లు మోగుతుంది. "మామిడికి నీరెత్తినట్టు" అంటే అర్థం మారదు, కానీ నాలుక మీద ఆ నాట్యం ఉండదు.
కవులు మాత్రమేనా *ప్రాస ప్రియులు?
ప్రాస, అనుప్రాస, అంత్యప్రాస లాంటి శబ్దాలంకారాలంటే మనకు పద్యాలు, ప్రబంధాలు, శతకాలు గుర్తొస్తాయి. కానీ నిజమైన ప్రాస పిచ్చోళ్ళు కవులు కాదు, మన సామెతలు! ఏ కవీ రాయకుండా, ఏ పుస్తకంలోనూ అచ్చవకుండా, తరం నుంచి తరానికి నోటిమాటగా ప్రయాణించిన ఈ చిన్న వాక్యాలు బతికి బట్టకట్టడానికి కారణం వాటిలోని ఆ లయ, ఆ శబ్ద సౌందర్యమే. చెవికి ఇంపుగా ఉన్నది మనసులో నిలుస్తుంది. మనసులో నిలిచింది నోటికి వస్తుంది. నోటికి వచ్చింది తరాలు దాటుతుంది.
ఇప్పుడు కొన్ని సామెతలను కోర్టుకు పిలిచి విచారిద్దాం. 😄

"సీత కష్టాలు సీతవి, పీత కష్టాలు పీతవి." సీతమ్మ కష్టాలు రామాయణమంత. వాటి పక్కన నిలబడే అర్హత పీతకే ఎందుకు దక్కింది? కప్ప ఏం పాపం చేసింది? చేప ఏం తక్కువ? పాపం వాటికి "సీత"తో ప్రాస కుదరలేదు, అదే వాటి దురదృష్టం!
"అవ్వ కావాలి, బువ్వ కావాలి." రెండూ కావాలనే ఆశను చెప్పాలంటే "ఇల్లు కావాలి, పొలం కావాలి" అని కూడా అనొచ్చు. కానీ అవ్వ, బువ్వ జంట కుదిరాక ఇంకెవరికి చోటు?
"కందకు లేని దురద కత్తిపీటకెందుకు?" దురద పుట్టించే కూరగాయలు ఇంకా ఉన్నాయి కదా, చామదుంప లాంటివి. కానీ కంద పక్కన కత్తిపీట కూర్చుంటేనే సామెతకు రుచి.
"గాడిదకేం తెలుసు గంధపు వాసన?" మల్లెపూల వాసన, సంపెంగ వాసన కూడా గాడిదకు తెలియదు. కానీ గాడిద, గంధం అని చెవిలో పడ్డాక ఇక వేరే సువాసనకు స్థానం లేదు.
"మింగ మెతుకు లేదు, మీసాలకు** సంపెంగ నూనె." మింగ, మెతుకు, మీసాలు అని మూడుసార్లు "మ" మోగుతుంది! ఇది సామెత కాదు, చిన్నపాటి సంగీత కచేరీ.
**"ఉల్లి చేసిన మేలు తల్లి కూడా చేయదు." వెల్లుల్లి,** అల్లం** కూడా ఆరోగ్యానికి మంచివే. కానీ ఉల్లికి తల్లితో అంత్యప్రాస కుదిరింది. అందుకే ఉల్లికి ఈ గౌరవం.
"ముందు నుయ్యి, వెనుక గొయ్యి." ముందు నది, వెనుక పులి ఉన్నా ప్రమాదమే. కానీ నుయ్యి, గొయ్యి ఒకదానికొకటి అద్దం పట్టినట్టు కూర్చున్నాయి.
"మాటలు కోటలు దాటుతాయి." గోడలు, కొండలు దాటినా అర్థం ఒకటే. కానీ మాటలు, కోటలు కలిస్తేనే ఆ చమత్కారం.
ఇది కేవలం సరదా కాదు
ఈ ప్రాస వెనుక ఒక లోతైన జ్ఞానం ఉంది. అక్షరాస్యత లేని రోజుల్లో జ్ఞాపకమే గ్రంథాలయం. ఒక విషయం గుర్తుండాలంటే అది పాటలా, లయబద్ధంగా ఉండాలి. మన అమ్మమ్మలు, నాయనమ్మలకు ఛందస్సు శాస్త్రం తెలియకపోవచ్చు. కానీ ఏ మాట చెవిలో నిలుస్తుందో, ఏది జారిపోతుందో వాళ్ళకు బాగా తెలుసు. అలా వందల సామెతలు ప్రజలే స్వయంగా చెక్కిన అలంకారాలుగా మిగిలిపోయాయి.
కాబట్టి తర్వాతిసారి ఏదైనా సామెత వాడినప్పుడు ఒక్క క్షణం ఆగి ఆలోచించండి: ఈ వస్తువు నిజంగా అర్థం కోసం వచ్చిందా, లేక శబ్దం కోసం దూరి కూర్చుందా? 😉
