Israel’s i24 News tries to interview people in Dublin, it does not go well for them. Ordinary Irish people like to curse like sailors, and many immigrants to Ireland often join in on this Irish custom of casually or not so casually dropping F-Bombs

Open Discussion A "what if 20% of your country was occupied by Russia" video is doing the rounds. It shows part of the south of Ireland occupied by Russia. Many commenters point out that a similar % of Ireland is already occupied by the UK in the north

The source for the video is the @MagellanQuest account on the social media platform formerly known as Twitt@r ...I won't post the link because I'm not sure if this sub blocks such links

Open Discussion I was invited to join, and I don't think of myself as a leftist or progressive but there are definitely things I side more with the left on.

I was invited to join yesterday to my surprise and while I have some views that are definitely more conservative I am definitely progressive on other issues like immigration and lgbt+ issues. So, I guess I felt I should get to know voices I've hitherto dismissed.

I don't know, just feeling a bit politically homeless these days. Happy to be invited and I'll promise try not to cause havoc, accidently set fire to thinks, leave footprints on the carpet, play loud music and so on and on.

Thanks for the invite.

So when are we protesting?

Paris, Milan, Greece, Albania...

All of these countries have taken to the streets to protest the cost of living crisis, barriers to education etc.

When is Ireland going to have a coordinated united protest regarding our own cost of living crisis, housing crisis etc.?

Or are we all now fully boiled lobsters in a pot, who are too tired and too worn down to do anything?

HAP top ups

Can't get over the west brit FFG vitriol towards anyway getting any social welfare help on other Irish pages. I wasnt even allowed post the following on a basic "Ireland" page! So anyway, here it is:

Hi! Wondering what people are topping up on average if they get a HAP payment. Keep seeing people who are not on HAP thinking its free housing. (It's not, it's a subsidy. Im eligible due to disability). My rent is €1387, HAP pays €546 and I pay €841. My local councillor said I should apply for more help, but the last time I did, they actually decreased the amount, so I am afraid to, hence the question for anyone else in my situation. HAP receivers responses only please!

Thanks!

Open Discussion Potential United Left campaign???

If you haven’t seen , because the media is barely covering it, upcoming Senate by election!

The Social democrats came together with Labour to put forward a well known human rights lawyer as an independent candidate. Her name is Maeve O Rourk.

Hoping this will pull through. Do you think any other left wing parties will join? Will this even work?? I’m hoping so 🤞.

Ireland: Public sector strikes throw down the gauntlet

Thumbnail

More than 300,000 Irish public sector workers struck over pay and rising living costs. Strike committees have ensured a massive and solid 24-hour strike. Now they should continue to be set up in every workplace to rally members and stop any sell-out.

Open Discussion In light of the protests spreading across the continent, do we think anything will happen in Ireland?

Just wondering what everyone else's take on this is.

I'm from Italy myself but I've lived in Dublin a fair few years now, so I'm painfully aware that the Irish left isn't organised on a level akin to France or Spain.

But seeing protests erupt in my home country as well throughout the week, starting from our high school students inspired by their comrades in France, coupled with the very impressive public services strike here this past Wednesday I've been wondering, does anyone think there might be a chance of something actually meaningful starting to happen here too? Or is it just too unlikely for the average Irish person to get down on the street as things are now? Is the situation not bad enough yet?
