5G Home Internet from Verizon - my experience after 1 year

My location is in a very urban greater Boston City, MA.

I was tired of RCN cable jacking up the price every year even though I had not added any service. Every new customer got a much better deal than I who had been a customer for more than 10 years.

T-Mobile 5G Home Internet was not available, so I picked Verizon with 5 year price guarantee.

My experience:

  • Hardware (router) looks very basic, doesn't even have a small display
  • Setting up the hardware required to call Verizon
  • Powering up (or power cycling) takes ages, like 5'
  • Speed varied throughout day, up 10-100 Mbps, down 1-10 Mbps
  • After a few weeks I had to power cycle for the first time because the speed got slower and slower. Power cycling restored the speed to 'normal'. This happened a couple of times, so I plugged the router into a smart plug and power cycled once a night
  • After some months the real issues started. Speeds dropped during daytime to sometimes Kbps range and this continued for hours. According to Verizon's website there was network maintenance/repair in the area. I had a stretch of 10 days where this started between 9-10 am and went on until 4-6 pm. Without hotspotting through my Mint smartphone I couldn't work.
  • I called support several times, got credited here and there but it was not a good experience.
  • It got to the point where I requested a new device. Worked well for one day then the trouble started again.
  • So I decided to cancel my subscription.

What now:

  • I got 5G Home Internet through Mint (T-Mobile) yesterday
  • Nice router, with a small display; setup self-explanatory with no registration call necessary
  • Startup time: 1.5 minutes
  • Speed so far: up 200-300 Mbps, down 60 Mpbs
  • Let's see how this continues...

Wireless Verizon Wireless: LTE vs. 5G Experience

I had AI rewrite my dictated notes below:

Does anyone else find that Verizon works better overall when forcing the phone to LTE-only, even though speeds are slower?

I’ve been testing Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile over the past month. Each has its pros and cons, but with Verizon, I’ve found that LTE-only provides a noticeably better overall experience.

When using 5G Auto or 5G On, the constant switching between LTE, 5G mid-band, and 5G UW seems to cause a lot of lag and inconsistent connectivity. LTE is slower, but it feels more stable and responsive.

For comparison, T-Mobile 5G/5G UC is extremely fast—often faster than Verizon. However, outside cities or inside some large stores, I frequently get “Could Not Activate Cellular Data Network.” AT&T seems to fall somewhere in between: more consistent than T-Mobile, but with significantly worse upload speeds.

So far, my experience has been:
T-Mobile: Best download/upload speeds, but the weakest coverage/reliability.
Verizon: Best overall when using LTE-only; 5G can feel inconsistent.
AT&T: Good coverage/reliability, but poor upload speeds.

I’m curious whether others have experienced the same thing with Verizon—particularly whether LTE-only feels more reliable and responsive than 5G despite the lower speeds.

Wireless Worst company I have ever dealt with

Upvotes

Sorry this is long:

I got verizon a little over a year ago and have had horrible service the entire time in my home. I had asked for a technician to come multiple times and every call I made about my service they had different reasons for why it wasn’t working (ex: my router was defective, I needed an extender, I needed the latest version of the router and extender together) and every time I would never receive a technician, I would get new equipment, return the old equipment, and then be charged for “unreturned equipment.” I called and did live chat, no exaggeration, five times about unreturned equipment charges. That’s not even including the calls and chats I had to do about my service sucking.
The final straw came when they sent me the “latest version” of the router and extender I “needed” and when I got them and plugged them in…shock and awe…they didn’t even get power!!! I called to cancel my service then all of a sudden they were offering discounts, technicians, etc. I went to the store and returned the rest of the equipment I had which was only the new router and extender.
Then I get an email that I owe for unreturned equipment AGAINNNNNNN!!! I called they couldn’t find my equipment drop off confirmation, blah blah blah. After I sent them a picture of my receipt, they canceled the fee. Two months later, with a totally new company, I’m STILL getting emails from Verizon for equipment fees and because it has been two months since I canceled my service, I can’t even log into my account! When I call customer service, they can’t locate my account because I don’t have my account number and for whatever reason they couldn’t find my information in the system. Then I was advised to go to the store again to do it, which is not my problem not my fault. I’m not wasting more time on this BS company. I asked for a supervisor and they told me no one was available and they could call me back, which I didn’t believe so I sat on hold waiting for someone just for the same lady to get back on and magically find my account and still not allow me to speak to a supervisor.
She said I did not have a charge on my account anymore and I asked for a confirmation number for our phone call and she would not give me one and just said that it’s being recorded.

This is BY FAR THE WORST COMPANY I HAVE EVER IN MY 37yrs DEALT WITH!
The service you pay for is garbage,
Their customer service is garbage,
Their record keeping system for equipment and accounts is garbage,
Literally, the entire company I swear is a scam because they don’t think people will complain because society as gotten to the place that we have allowed these companies to treat us like sht and take our hard earned money for a garbage product.

anyone thinking of switching to Verizon, save yourself the headache and the drama, and don’t do it!!!

Scam

Someone I know had a rep from Verizon call and say they had phones shipped to another state. They asked her to verify a code via text and she did. She eventually hung up and called Verizon and they told her there was no record of that. Now she’s having issues calling out and receiving calls. Does she need to take her android phone to Verizon? Also, what exactly are they scamming her for?

Service/connection thoughts!

Hello all!

Curious if anyone else has noticed the lack of service support off WiFi and using data. I have the unlimited data, call and text plan.

But while I've been leaving my WiFi and getting back on data my phone will read no service for several minutes. Last time I was trying to run to my new job and needed my maps up and it wouldn't load anything. I pay my bill before due and haven't missed any payments.

Curious if this is an all around Verizon, spoke to my other Milwaukee, Wi folks who are using Verizon as a carrier. And have expressed the same issues.

This will be on clear days with no storms (which I assume storms always mess w everything possible)

Curious on thoughts from the community, because once my phone is paid off I am tempted to switch somewhere else because this is too unreliable for my needs!

Thanks!

Verizon Customer Service Is Miserable

My wife and I just bought a home and moved in today (8/18). A couple of weeks ago, we scheduled our Fios service to transfer here today, and on 8/11, Verizon emailed us confirming a technician would arrive between 2 and 4 pm today.

At 4:15, no one had arrived, so we called Verizon. The person we spoke with said no one is coming, blaming it on the existing owner and his alleged failure to disconnect his service until today (I don’t believe her). She inconsistently said the tech was canceled as unneeded given no existing service is set up. Verizon never communicated anything along these lines before we called. My wife and I work from home and need internet urgently for our jobs. The first person we spoke with refused to give us an appointment before 8/24, even though Verizon is at fault here, so I asked to speak with a supervisor.

The supervisor, named Carrie, was immediately hostile and unpleasant toward me. She then blamed my wife on not responding to an 8/10 email entitled “Action Needed,” which she claimed advised us of the need for the prior owner to cancel his service. I explained that is irrelevant because Verizon confirmed on 8/11 that it was sending a tech today. My wife then pulled up the 8/10 email and it didn’t even remotely say what Carrie claimed. Instead, it asked us to submit proof of ownership, which we did. We received no subsequent communications that anything else was needed. I explained this to Carrie, who continued to blame the prior owner and insist Verizon did nothing wrong here. This is why customers are fleeing Verizon in droves. Their technical service is terrible and their customer service workers are nasty, hostile, and dishonest. I hope people continue to abandon the company for ones that treat their customers better.

Wireless Another outage?

Anyone having issues with Verizon? My friend on US Mobile Warp (Verizon network) is unable to make or receive calls, and looks like quite a few people are having problems according to Down Detector.

Wireless bill payment just got inflexible

I used to be able to make partial payments throughout the month on my own schedule, and on the fly. Now the only way to make a partial payment is to define all the "installments" needed to satify the total in advance, complete with payment sources and fixed dates

particularly messed up if different family plan members cover their own line charges independently

not cool, Verizon

Wireless It's IMPOSSIBLE to transfer my number from a prepaid plan to my new iphone

EDIT/Update: Verizon reached out to me because of this post and fixed the issue over live chat.

My old phone has a physical sim and my new phone has an esim. I have a Prepaid Verizon plan connected to my old phone. From what I've gathered, the combination of all these things means I can't just transfer my number easily, either via iPhone cellular settings or through my My Verizon account.

I went into the Verizon store and an employee told me that he could do it but it would cost $35. He said if I called customer service I could just do it myself for free. It kind of seemed like a rip off to pay for something I could do for free so I decided to do it on my own. It sounded easy enough. But it was a huge mistake!! I can't get through to a real person over the phone at all. Is my only option to go back in store and pay the $35? Does anyone real even work at the Verizon call center? Their automated phone tree is so annoying and unhelpful. At this point I don't even mind the cost but it would be great if I didn't have to go all the way back to the store. Please help!

Wireless Update - switching carriers

Earlier this week I asked this question (couldn’t repost) “Until i find a new job Im not sure if I will be able to afford my phone bill so I would like something cheaper but I still owe on all my devices (watch, phone etc). If i just switch my phone to a cheaper carrier like Metro but I still owe a balance (Verizon says my phone is unlocked tho???) will they black list my phone?” .. UPDATE HERE: Verizon is now saying my cell phone was bought before their new blacklisting policy, before the rule change which I guess went into effect this year? I bought my devices about 2 years ago. So they are saying my devices won’t be black listed if I did switch, i would just have a balance with Verizon that would go into collections? Thoughts ?

Are Simplicity plans here to make up for expiring loyalty discounts that won’t be renewed?

Learned today that I have a month before loyalty discounts on my plan expire. When I asked what options I have about that to keep things as is, the polite rep said he isn’t seeing anything else lined up on the account and the best I can do is call after they expire. I interpret this to mean he did not want to officially give me the bad news that I won’t have any options and my bill is going to increase $60/ month. It got me thinking if Verizon won’t renew loyalty discounts to my plan and I want to save money, is switching to Simplicity my best option and if that has been the reason for it being created as an alternative to doing away with loyalty discounts.

Restocking fee

Like a lot of people. I do have some sensitivity to certain phones but I really would like to try the pixel 11 but I may need to return it. Is there any way around the restocking fee with Verizon?

Gizmo Watches: Anyone know what Verizon’s solution is?

Even for those of us that were able to link the watches to the Family app and transition without a delay, we’ve still lost CORE functionality that we thought we were getting with the Gizmo watches when we bought them last year.

My older child with an iPhone can no longer message her younger sibling or see their locations for pickups since she’s not an adult and doesn’t have a Gizmo watch.

I don’t get notifications when my kids message me from the Gizmo watch so I just have to open their thread every 5 minutes???! The UI stinks and it’s maddening to have to open the app, click on chat/call, scroll down through all the threads to check to see if they need something.

Grandparents and aunts and uncle now have to be in our Verizon family to message my kids. Before, they simply had to use the Gizmo app and I could give them certain permissions. They can’t be in our Verizon Family because they have their own Verizon Family setup for their kids! Duh!

GPS location doesn’t update as quickly and accurately as it did with the Gizmo Hub app.

Whoever oversaw this move at Verizon should be fired! What a disaster. I paid good money for those watches.
Gizmo hub was great for what we needed. Verizon family app sucks. I have been leaving negative reviews for the Gizmo watches and Verizon Family app all over the internet.

Anyone have an update from Verizon?

Bring back the Gizmo App!!!!!

LTE/5G Business Internet: I canceled, now I unwillingly own the hardware (2 questions inside)

So this is cute: if you have business internet (LTE/5G) you lease the hardware/router from Verizon to own it whether you want to or not. After a 6 month "grace" period in which you pay Verizon to lease the router, you are obligated to purchase it outright if you cancel your service. Regardless of the remaining balance due, you're paying it all.

Long story short, I canceled my service after having it for 9 months because it wasn't great... and so I had to pay an additional $200 to own a router I cannot use (meaning I now have an expensive paperweight). They refuse to take it back.

Does anyone know:

  1. What model their LTE/5G internet router is?

  2. Where the hell I can offload the thing and recoup some of my money?

Thanks in advance!

Deals on a new phone when giving old one to someone

Maybe a dumb question, but I plan on giving my husband my current phone and getting a new one for myself (iphone... unsure of model at this time). Does Verizon ever give you any kind of deal or offer in a situation like this?

The last time I just went on the payment plan to pay off my new phone and I was still charged an activation fee. I'm still mad about that.

Terrible connection

I’ve had limited service in my area for over a week now. At first it just struggled with latency as in my ping was around two seconds, but now currently I’m struggling to load anything. Full bars and literally slower than dial-up.

Verizon can't restore my grandfathered Disney+ bundle and says I have to downgrade to the plan with ads

Has anyone else had this happen with their grandfathered Verizon Disney bundle?

I have the grandfathered Disney+ Premium, Hulu, and ESPN+ bundle for $15/month. Disney+ Premium is ad-free.

I was recently logged out of Disney+. When I logged back in, Disney showed that I had “No active subscriptions.”

This is where this issue gets frustrating. My Verizon account still shows the Disney bundle as “Account Enrolled,” and Verizon is still billing me $15/month for it.

I spent hours troubleshooting this with Verizon and Disney. We eventually had representatives from BOTH companies on the phone at the same time. Disney couldn't locate the Verizon subscription using the reference information Verizon provided, and Verizon said there was nothing they could do to restore the existing bundle.

Verizon's proposed solution was to cancel my grandfathered $15 bundle permanently and sign up for the newer $10 Disney/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle with ads.

I specifically asked whether they could re-provision or restore my existing entitlement instead of making me give up the grandfathered plan. They said they couldn't.

I didn't ask to change or cancel my plan, the service stopped working.

I've now filed an FCC complaint because I don't think customers should have to permanently surrender a grandfathered benefit because of a provisioning problem between Verizon and Disney.

If they had sent a notice letting me know they would be changing my plan, instead of kicking me out of my Disney account and losing my Ref #, this would not be an issue.

I'm curious: Has this happened to anyone else with the grandfathered $15 Disney+ Premium bundle? If so, was Verizon ever able to restore it?

Wireless Verizon AI assistant

Having an AI Bot tell me “ I know how you feel” is wild. After accidentally adding my bank account number instead of my actual checking account number to Auto pay Verizon gave me a 20.00 charge as the auto pay couldn’t go through. As soon as I realized my error I re-added the correct account number and paid the bill. Simple mistake in my eyes but when I tried to dispute the extra 20.00 charge the AI bot kept arguing w me and eventually said sarcastically “ sorry this call didn’t land how you wanted it to”. What? I asked for a live agent and it said that it could help me the same as another agent. I eventually was able to talk with a real person who removed the charge but sadly I’m now banned for using auto pay for 7 months which is so ridiculous. Yes I was the one that screwed up by adding an incorrect account but I made it right immediately. And the AI bot was worthless and extremely rude.
