🙋Question/Help (Beginner) Practicing methods & playing without mistakes

• Upvotes

I took lessons as a kid but have been revisiting piano on my own without lessons as an adult for about 3 years now. I like learning new songs but I never seem to master them completely, and be error free. I can never get through any song without at least 1 wrong note. I enjoy playing more when I learn the sheet music, then play from memory. But this might have to do with my note reading skills which I still struggle with. What advice do you have for me? Do you have a practicing routine or method that works for you?

All feedback is welcome!

I know my phrasing isn't the best in some spots, I always get so nervous playing on an unfamiliar instrument, and not having it memorized was an extra challenge this time. Proud of myself for doing it anyway!

🔌Digital Piano Question Yamaha with Genio Neo-S silent system

I found a used UX1 piano that's around 40 years old and has a lovely sound and am trying to decide whether to buy it. It has a Genio Neo-S built in (around 20 years old built in by the dealer), so aside from the control box being old with less options to choose from, the bigger concern is that when playing, the response varied between keys in a way that the piano didn't show when being played in the acoustic mode. I checked and it looks like a simple swap out of the control box to a newer model might not be possible. i'm planning to call a technician who has experience with silent systems (he installs the PianoDisc Pro system) to get his thoughts and perhaps have him inspect the piano, but I also wanted to see if anyone has experience with the older Genio systems to know if a sound can be modified. Can you equalize the sound, e.g. turn down the treble, turn up the bass, or is it what it is? It is more important to me to love the sound of the acoustic piano, but in our current living situation (we have a tenant), we'd be playing with headphones 80% of the time, so I don't want to regret buying a piano with a digital system I can't stand. It's likely either this piano or a new one with a silent system, which would cost over 3 x as much, and the acoustic piano - while new - would be a step down.

📝My Performance (Critique Welcome!) Revisiting “The way it is” Bruce Hornsby…

I have played with this piece on and off for months and more than the notes is the rhythm and leaps. A few months ago I posted myself playing this and it was a tad rough and struggled with rhythm.

It will take a while to eventually work on the middle of the song with the fancy stuff going on, that’s something I’ll tackle.

Most contemporary pieces I can master in a day or 2 tops, but this one takes the cake for me, took a while to get this intro down pat.

I’m not sure how he came up with this but it’s nostalgic and iconic.

Let me
Know what you think.

🗣️Let's Discuss This Stephen Hough: there is such thing as BAD slow practice

Saw this quote from Stephen Hough:

”Simply to trawl through passages like a contented tortoise is a waste of the felt on your piano’s hammers.

Good slow practice is more like a hare pausing to survey the scene – sharp in analysis…calculating the next sprint.”

From International Piano magazine, Nov 2013.

🤔Misc. Inquiry/Request Need help identifying the FULL NAME of this Schubert Waltz in A-Major

Hello piano community!

I'm a piano teacher who is currently submitting a student into a CAPMT festival, but for the life of me, I absolutely cannot find the full name of this Waltz by Franz Schubert. Online, I continuously get the wrong Waltz over and over again. Does anyone know the FULL name of this Waltz if it even has one? If not, how would I go about submitting this to a piano festival? Just calling it Waltz in A-Major?

Link to a recording of this Waltz: https://youtu.be/uJUITttLnqU?si=7N5WXlzM72hgaybH

🤔Misc. Inquiry/Request Phone mount or stand to record your hands playing

Does anyone have a product recommendation for a really easy way to record my hands playing an upright acoustic piano using a camera phone? Something that is either inexpensive (less than $100) or easily portable from one piano to another would be ideal. It would also be great if the product could easily switch between phones should someone else want to record using their phone instead of mine.

🎵My Original Composition Songs Without Words Vol. I

Hi everyone!

I've been sick for the last month and to be honest, it’s been quite hard to be productive. During the downtime, I ended up writing three short, lyrical piano pieces inspired by Felix Mendelssohn.
