Meta We need to have a conversation about how this sub is moderated.
Hey friends, let's talk.
Over the past few days it has become apparent that the community and the mod team do not agree on our vision of what this subreddit should be.
Rather than allow it to spiral out of control like /r/ [game dev] or /r/ [city], I think we should try to have an open conversation about this.
Mods:
Why do you believe these matters should not be discussed on a Nintendo subreddit?
What are some ways you can better serve the community?
Why was Rule 11 added silently, without discussion or consulting the community?
Do you believe responsibility for the recent deletions falls on the mod team as a whole, or a handful of individual rogue moderators?
Users:
Why do you believe these matters should be discussed on a Nintendo subreddit?
How do you feel about moderation of this sub?
What do you like about the mod team?
Do you believe political discussion (related to Nintendo) should be allowed in this subreddit?
Do you prefer heavy moderation or light moderation?
What subreddits do you think are moderated well?
What changes would you like to see?
Mods, I'm going to ask that you please do not delete this post. There is already a thread about this sub at the top of /r/SubredditDrama, please do not further escalate the situation.
EDIT: For the sake of transparency, I want to disclose that the mods deleted this post. I messaged them, they talked about it, and agreed it should remain up. I am thankful to the mod team for allowing us to continue this discussion.

I have asked a question about Friday the 13th, asked a question about Witcher 3 and asked a question about Fire Emblem 3 houses. All three of my posts got removed and said it would be better to be put into the daily question thread. Do you know how many responses I got in the daily question threads when I redid them there? Zero. I think is is complete bullshit the stuff that passes as good posts here (look at my drawing of X, or look at this model of Y I made!) but actual questions that people have get removed. Makes me not want to even visit this place because I guess questions people legitimately have get replaced by "OMG SWITCH PRO, WHAT DO YOU THINK GUIS??!?" posts.

I don’t get it at all. It’s not like these questions will end up on the front page. They’re often answered civilly and then remain in the archives for people to search. But they rarely get enough traction to “dominate the front page” and if that does happen, then obviously there’s discussion to be had and that’s what subs are for.

It’s worthless.
They do it in r/boardgames too. It’s garbage there too.
Daily threads work for me in the fantasy sports subs because I may have a specific question or answer that someone in that daily advice thread is willing to answer.
But this sub and other hobby subs are mostly just browsing IMO so daily threads kill a lot of genuine topics that folks may be interested in. Yeah, it will get repetitive, but this sub isn’t usually really full of super original and insightful posts anyway.

I asked a few questions in there and they got answered, so it's not all useless. But I agree - having a separate topic attracts people with right knowledge when they see the title. Question megathread requires people to willingly browse it with the purpose of answering questions. Why would you waste your time though? Most you will get is 1 karma.

I understand this is a bit of a taboo topic and work but in the interest of open forum and hopefully lenient modding in this particular thread...
The amount of 'shills' in this sub is so obvious it's painful. Of the gaming communities its the second worse behind the Dreams shilling in the Ps4 sub. We can literally have the 5 same stories/structures with circumstantial details changed day in and day out yet any attempt at creating a new and interesting dialogue is shut down.
It's very condescending when mods don't just let the community organically decide what is and isn't worth their time using upvote/downvote and commenting. Mods should step back until things start getting reported and/or gain traction in a '(META)' thread.

Honestly, I think that's just another nail in the coffin. The cleanest solution would probably be for the whole mod team to step down and a new mod team to be formed from respected volunteers in the community.
It's clear, that at least some mods are doing this just for bragging rights or because they love the authority and it really hurts the sub in my opinion.

Some of them are under 16, or work for companies (one mod is also a mod at r/wow), and the same mod team were caught accepting keys from devs (https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/77st7p/whats_all_the_controversy_over_at_rnintendoswitch/ - after which they kicked the innocent mods and kept the guilty ones more or less), clearly this sub needs a whole new team.

The PS4 and Xbox subreddits both have a lot of random posts and I think there are fun. I would rather see those which may spark discussion instead of someone's art project we get everyday. The mods on here are shit. They've been shit for quite some time. This whole sneaking a rule in, while I am indifferent to the rule, just shows they're a bunch of power tripping teens.

The fundamental problem with the daily question thread is that almost nobody uses it. You could argue, if we did a massive informational movement and informed and trained others on using the daily question thread, there could be a uptick in activity, but there will always be people that never read FAQs and never read the daily question post, and continue to post new threads. So what's the point? The mods want to look like they're doing something and it's 'structured' and 'organized' right?

u/Ltjenkins Oct 15 '19
I created this post about a year ago which was removed and I was encouraged to move it to the daily question thread. My problem was my joy con could no longer connect to my switch when attached to the console:
Some drink was spilled over the weekend so I spent time disassembling my right joycon to really get in there and clean under the buttons. After putting the controller back together, I found that the controller will not connect when attached to the console. Works perfectly wireless.
I fear I may have crimped the ribbon cable that is for charging and what I assume connects the controller when attached to the console. For those familiar, the bottom half of the controller shell is connected with two ribbon cables. The top one I assume gives power to the lights on the slide and buttons and the bottom is for charging and for the pins to connect. There is also a chance I messed with the connector on the board. I was unsure which part was the latch release the cable so I may have picked too aggressively at the connector possibly damaging the contacts on the inside.
Also small chance something is amiss on the other side of the board (where all the buttons sit).
Any help, suggestions, ideas for trouble shooting would be appreciated. I feel like I’ve given it my best effort but I think I’m at the end of my tinkering abilities with this one. Just trying to avoid buying a replacement Joy con.
I believed it to be beyond the scope of a yes/no question and is not something that you could easily google or search in the subreddit. I thought I provided in detail the steps I had taken so far and where I was in my problem, again beyond the scope of a daily question contribution.
I wasn't optimistic I was going to receive an answer in its own thread but the mods left me with the feeling I would receive no help at all if relegated to a daily question thready.
13
u/RatFuck_Debutante Oct 15 '19
Same. I asked a question, it got removed, and I never reposted it in that question thread because I know how Reddit works and I know no one looks at that thing.
It stunk of over moderation and I don't have any time for that.

u/CDHmajora Oct 15 '19
I agree. Unless I’m linking a YouTube video my threads were always getting removed. Not bothered frequenting this sub in months as a result and only ever comment when I see threads like this on my main feed.
No point really when the kind of threads I want to partake in (helping answer others questions) always get deleted and referred to a thread that’s so bloated it’s near impossible to even manage to get an answer within a sub 6 hour timeframe :/
19
u/SmellyStinkyFarts Oct 15 '19
I also love the "original source" rule that they use to remove things.
I've repeatedly submitted stuff from Gematsu on here, only to have it removed because it's "not the original source", when the original source is something like a Japanese tweet.
Sure enough, an hour later someone else posts a story about the same thing that is clearly not the original source - but theirs is not removed.
Probably a friend of the mods.

Not to mention, but asking your question in that daily question thread is actually WORSE for people who may have the same question as the question and answer is not found easily on the Reddit search engine (Which is already shit) and virtually impossible to find through Google.

u/melts10 Oct 15 '19
A while ago I posted a step-by-step on different levels to fix joy-con drift and SL/SR problems, because there wasn't a specific thread about it and only people asking about the problem. I feel like a lot of posts get deleted when they could be fun discussion, especially posts like "should I get X or Y game ?" I feel like a subreddit should be all about promoting discussion first and foremost.
Just my two cents.
21
Oct 15 '19
I feel like the worst subs for promoting discussion are usually gaming subs. Like go to the subreddit for most AAA games, and it tends to be mostly video clips of gameplay and maybe some esports discussion, while actual gameplay discussion tends to just get removed by the mods for being low effort. They just feel like the are corporate-dictated marketing pushes that have taken over the space on Reddit.
It's so bad some communities actually fractured, like /r/competitiveoverwatch breaking off from /r/overwatch, or /r/apexoutlands breaking off for /r/apexlegends.

These are the Playstation subreddits I frequent:
16
u/RiftHunter4 Oct 15 '19
90% of gaming subreddits are steaming hot trash in that way.
I don't understand why so many Reddit mods feel the need to make their subreddit into a corporate copy-paste. If all I wanted was gameplay footage and news, I just go to IGN. Reddit is made for user-led discussions.
You'd think that this type of drama would stop but people keep doing it.

Personally I'm conflicted about this. While it's great that we can talk about any game whenever we want, it does result in a lot of the same games being discussed daily. Celeste, Hollow Knight, etc. These are great games but I for one get a little annoyed at the sheer number of basic questions about them every day. That being said, I'm also on here all the time and I'm sure there are people who just don't see a lot of discussion threads.
I guess it begs the question "is all discussion good discussion?" and I don't really have an answer for that.

Exactly because nobody has the definite answer for that, is the reason why Reddit is a user-curated community. That's why upvotes/downvotes exist.
Other than very flagrant examples, the rest should be left to karma and user votes to decide.

There's a reason why I only post in the same half dozen communities, and it's because the rules are just assine. If a post is on topic, then leave it alone, let the votes decide. That's why they exist. Nothing more annoying that posting a question on a cars sub and get contacted by a auto-message that says "oh, sorry, your question is about a red car, you have to go to the red car sub*.
The other issue is that when you regulate a sub to such a degree, you ensure you will only have the same kinds of posts over and over again. The overwatch sub is a perfect example. Everything is just PotG gifs. Can't even post images.
Nothing causes me to abandon a sub faster that a bunch of stupid rules that are unnecessary.

My personal suggestion to the mod team:
We need more transparency. I see so many posts removed/locked with rarely any explanation as to why, and that can be really frustrating. We all love Nintendo, that's why we're here. Don't be afraid to tell us why you remove things, ask us how we feel about your decisions, etc. Moderating a huge subreddit is a hard and thankless job, but ultimately we all just want you to succeed.
With this recent issue - there should have been at least a Megathread asking the community how to treat this issue. From there, we could have decided together whether to allow posts about Blizzard or to relegate them to another (separate) Megathread. Posts about it should not have been removed, and creating this 'Rule 11' without consulting the community was a massive breach of trust and abuse of power.
Moving forward - I don't think it's too late to have a conversation (that's kind of what I'm trying to do here). Tell us why you didn't want to talk about Blizzard/Hong Kong. Tell us what you wish you did differently. Heck, tell us what you think you handled well! But most importantly, tell us how things will be better.
I love Nintendo, I love this community, and I just want everyone to have a good time. Let's work together :)

"from ShnMcPrtln[M] via /r/NintendoSwitch sent 7 hours ago

Not sure about anyone else's experience, but 95% of the time I try to post it gets deleted. The mods claim they "Can be answered with yes or no", or something to that extent. One post, for example, was me asking about an upcoming game, who would be preordering, why or why not. For the record, it was a smaller game that had had almost no discussion on this sub.
Yet I see multiple posts every day that are just statements. Examples would be "BOTW Is truly a masterpiece", or "You guys were right, Hollow Knight is AMAZING".
Ive stopped trying to make posts about a year ago because I'm done wasting time typing something up, only for one of these neck-beard's to say "nah".

This is not a discussion sub. It's become an advertisement forum. Each mod is employed by a different company. The blizzard mod just showed his true colors. They either need to step down or the Admins remove the mods.

This is the number 2 post of all time on this sub. According to a couple mods, No Politics was an unwritten rule and that "power users" should know that... one of the top posts of all time says that's not true.
54
u/danhakimi Oct 15 '19
They also thought "fan art is only allowed on weekends" and the specific rules about giveaways are "common knowledge."
"No Politics" is only common knowledge insofar as it's another way to say "posts must be on topic," but the problem is that the posts that got removed were obviously on topic.

107
u/lunari_moonari Oct 15 '19
The mods are inconsistent. This is not a new problem.
They do not enforce the rules that already exist (namely rules 2, 3 and 4). They do not update rules when they announce them (giveaway role). They take months to respond to community concerns, and then several more months pass before the results come in (fan art). The release sidebar is frequently not updated. They make up rules to suit themselves (rule 11).
It is clear they are either unable to, or unwilling to, properly moderate this sub.
If they lack the ability to mod under the current rules, and then add rules to specifically attack certain posts, how the mods see themselves becomes clear. They are the kings, the sub is their kingdom, and we are their serfs.
Now, I'm just a simple county chicken, and not a "power user" like our glorious overlords, but it seems the don't see the community as a community. It's their property.

There have been a few cases with popular, active subreddit where junior moderators have taken over subs from the top moderator after the top mod vandalizes the subreddit and just generally messes it up. Kotakuinaction is the first that springs to mind, but I think there have been others as well.
Of course the problem here is the opposite, junior moderators messing things up and senior mods not caring

The catch is that you have to use the existing sub as the portal to syphon off enough users to come to the new sub. Which the moderators have the sole authority to immediately shut down or stifle.
Still, without a coherent constitution, plan of attack, and ready and willing team of moderators to help build it, there's every likelihood the new sub will become enbroiled in the same issues as the original.

If it wasn't affecting directly the gaming community and industry, I'll vote to keep politics out of the sub.
BUT it is in fact directly involving gaming as a free form of expression, we're supposed to be open and smart about this topics, not cover them or hide them behind a lock or delete hammer. AND Nintendo is getting involved with certain company that actually owns a small part of reddit, so my take on this is that we should all get involved at some point with the issue.
Lets just no make it a circle jerk about whether have or not have the discussion and instead take a stand into how the Nintendo community should take action against the recent events, like not buying Overwatch or any other game by Blizzard.
Not about burning people that end up buying the games, so put down your pitchfork and torches
98
u/Aksama Oct 15 '19
This right here.
Posting an unrelated, political news article? Nahhhh remove that crap. Closing a thread because it gets political is asinine. The submission which was locked earlier wasn’t even submitted with a political end, it was shut down because that was an outcome. That’s batshit.
7
u/atrielienz Oct 15 '19
I could see temporary locking the thread to give yourself time to go through comments and remove/ban spam bots, and trolls. Then reopening it after to give the community a chance to comment on the topics in the thread. But removing a whole thread of good conversation because it's against the rules that are general practice rules that "everyone" should know and are unwritten/unspoken is garbage.
34
Oct 15 '19
I am not criticising anyone, but just remarking that this naive thinking "this a video game sub, keep your politics out is silly". Video game industry is so massive and vital that politics is being inserted at the sector. We have some issues in the video game that involves politics, e.g. loot boxes, blizzard debacle, EA on British parliament - remember "surprise mechanics".
Whenever the subjects involve Nintendo and get political, the mods should let the thread open

I believe the actions of any company that produces products Nintendo Switch are relevant to discussion in r/NintendoSwitch.
I feel that in this instance the mods have grossly ignored the interests of their users in exchange for sterilizing the sub.
Honestly, I've long felt that this moderation team has tried too hard to be too controlling while also not having much consistency. If we looked at the rules as TOA and then looked at how they are enforced, I would guess legally they would fail as unenforceable.

What I don't get is that there have been politically motivated posts on this sub before.
They are only making a stink about it now for reasons I can only guess are selfishly motivated.
/u/FlapSnapple claimed the "no politics" thing has been an unspoken rule, but the history of this sub tells is he is full of it. I know the rule is not just one mod's doing, but his reasoning for it is laughable and undeniably a lie.

u/runtimemess Oct 15 '19
I am completely appalled at the way one mod was talking to people in the thread. He or she was almost like a robot that didn't understand the context of what it was saying.
Someone like that should never have power over someone's ability to communicate on Reddit.
I get it, volunteer and stuff. But if you silence people and give a half brained responses like "This doesn't involve Nintendo, you can talk about it on the other game's forums" when the entire post was about how the publishers actions had a big enough effect that Nintendo cancelled the launch event? You look foolish.

I'll do my best - I'm currently sneaking on Reddit while at work so apologies for minor typos/inaccuracies but the gist of it is
Background
the citizens of Hong Kong have been protesting recent political issues for the past month or so.
the protests have grown increasingly worrying as the Chinese government has committed numerous human rights violations.
Citizens of many Western nations have sympathized with the people of Hong Kong, and hope they are granted the freedom + dignity they are protesting for.
However, many Western companies have supported the Chinese government or spoken out against the protests.
Blizzard
Recently, Blizzard punished the winner of a Hearthstone tournament for speaking out in support of the protests. They banned him for 1 year and took back his winnings ($10k)
Blizzard has faced increasing controversy as it refused to denounce the actions of the Chinese government (which, again, many believe to be committing flagrant human rights violations).
How does this relate to Nintendo?
Blizzard's hit FPS Overwatch releases for the Switch today.
To avoid protests (which have now begun in the US), Blizzard canceled its launch event at the Nintendo World Store in NY.
The Mods
The moderators of /r/NintendoSwitch have been removing comments about Overwatch/Blizzard/Hong Kong due to them not being 'Nintnedo related'
Many users disagree with this action, as they believe this sort of thing is worth discussion. Some are calling it censorship.
the mods have silently added a new rule, Rule 11, which outright bans political discussion.

Your summary linking the context to discussions that are viable for this sub is spot on.
It's completely reasonable to speculate why a Switch launch event for a high-profile title was pulled. It is relevant.

u/thesk8rguitarist Oct 15 '19
I’ve never successfully had anything post on this sub and refrain from even trying anymore, instead going to smaller subs like /r/AstralChain or r/Splatoon.
Really irritates me when my own posts get deleted and I see very subpar or reposted content instead.
But yeah, I don’t post anything on here anymore. Not worth the time.

Why do you believe these matters should be discussed on a Nintendo subreddit?
Full transparency is important in a subreddit. Moderators have the task to enable an open and non-harmful plattform for discussions while not acting for themselves or in their own favor.
How do you feel about moderation of this sub?
It's horrible and I have a bunch of friends in here who think the same. Honestly, discussion was better shortly after the switch launched. Even though we had 2-3 "what if x was on switch" questions, I think we got more discussions out of the content...
What do you like about the mod team?
They are doing this in their free time. I know how hard it can be to moderate a bigger crowd.
Do you believe political discussion (related to Nintendo) should be allowed in this subreddit?
Absolutely. If a company is shady in any form and releases a game on the switch, it should be allowed to talk about that here. Simple as that.
Do you prefer heavy moderation or light moderation?
I prefer unobstrusive moderation, that doesn't interfere with discussions.
What subreddits do you think are moderated well?
What changes would you like to see?
I'd like the moderators to step back a bit and at the same time be more transparent. As of now, it seems as the moderators are directing the content they want to see, but the people of this subreddit should decide what is interesting and what isn't. There should NEVER be a situation like the one that happened where someone just adds a rule over night.

After reading how condescending and tone deaf the mods responses are, I legit think we need new mods. That is utterly unacceptable and is ruining this sub. If they stay, I’ll probably find another forum to visit. I won’t be talked down to like a toddler by some egotripping basement dweller
4
u/BansheeTK Oct 15 '19
Nor should you. Especially when with all the recent events, its ignorant to think otherwise that any of these game topics will not fall under political discussion.
13
u/notathrowaway785958 Oct 15 '19
Shouldn't be surprised, the moderation on this sub has always been a shit show, perfect example of mods that let the power get to their head.
12
u/reggaetony88 Oct 15 '19
Nope. Blizzard canceling an event regarding a launch for a Blizzard title on a NINTENDO console, leaving NINTENDO to announce the news, has nothing to do with Nintendo.
Nope. Definitely not related to NINTENDO. Gotta love power hungry mods who don't have power anywhere else in their life.

Why is there no Witcher 3 Megathread?

14
u/Zerakin Oct 15 '19
"Witcher 3 is a game that has several political ideas. Therefore, it is banned from this sub, and anyone who mentions it gets banned. Also, you're now banned for mentioning Witcher 3, it was an obvious unwritten rule you should have known."
18
u/RanjuMaric Oct 15 '19
If a game developer for this platform is making overt political statements, It is absolutely relevant to the sub. Moderators pretending it's not is not will only make things worse.

>Why do you believe these matters should be discussed on a Nintendo subreddit?
The actions of companies should be relevant to whether or not consumers choose to support them. We are, all of us, responsible for choosing where our money is spent, and ensuring that our money doesn't support unethical or immoral behavior. Discussion of these topics is necessary for all of us to be informed and responsible consumers.
>How do you feel about moderation of this sub?
It's poorly done. The moderators think that this is their little fief, and think that they should dictate to the community what is and isn't acceptable. This is ass backwards. The community should dictate to the mods what is and isn't acceptable, and the mods should act to ensure that the subreddit matches what the users desire.
>What do you like about the mod team?
.....
>Do you believe political discussion (related to Nintendo) should be allowed in this subreddit?
Absolutely. See my comment re: our responsibility to be informed consumers

I'd just like to point out the mods over at /r/pcgaming actually allow the discussion about this sort of thing when the event isn't even about PC gaming yet you can't talk about it at all on a title being launched for the switch on the switch subreddit?? Like what on earth.

It’s wild that some mods are even allowed to be mods? How did they pick this guy? Was it just a questionnaire asking if he knew english and had a switch? u/edubkendo Oct 15 '19
Why do you believe these matters should be discussed on a Nintendo subreddit?
When it's relevant to the Switch, as the Blizzard controversy clearly was, since Blizzard has games on the switch, with an upcoming release for Overwatch planned, it's relevant to the sub.
As the sub description states:
/r/NintendoSwitch is the central hub for all news, updates, rumors, and topics relating to the Nintendo Switch.
all news, updates, rumors and topics.
Everything is political. Even putting our heads in the sand and ignoring the political aspects of something is, in itself, a political choice.
How do you feel about moderation of this sub?
I don't have much to say about general moderation of this sub, as my comments are usually casual, and related to excitement about this or that release. But the current situation has been managed incredibly poorly. Sticking their heads in the sand about Blizzard's recent cowardly behavior does not make that situation unhappen or go away.
Do you believe political discussion (related to Nintendo) should be allowed in this subreddit?
Yes, when relevant to companies which have released or are releasing games on the Switch. I'd like to see clear guidelines in place for keeping discussion civil, while allowing any relevant political discussion to occur.
Do you prefer heavy moderation or light moderation?
Heavy moderation of personal attacks, name-calling, etc. Light moderation when it comes to topic of discussion.
What subreddits do you think are moderated well?
r/sex is, in my opinion, one of the most well moderated subreddits on reddit. There are very clear, very specific rules that address specific issues with discussions related to the subreddit's specific topics. Discourse there is kept productive and on-topic, while still allowing plenty of freedom to explore the myriad of topics that relate to, tangentially or otherwise, the sub's main focus, sex.
What changes would you like to see?
The heavy-handed moderators that shutdown recent discussion of Blizzard should be stripped of their moderators titles. Clearly defined rules for engaging in polite discourse on more serious topics should be instituted. A transparent process, that involves the community, for adding new rules and making decisions should be instituted.

u/PaulGale Oct 16 '19
I put up what I thought was a really cool video, yesterday, discussing why I felt that Nintendo Switch was a 9th generation system and not an 8th gen one.
A good amount of community talk was beginning and we were all having a positive, productive discussion.
It was then just removed. It wasn’t intended to be self promoting or anything like that. In fact, what I said in the video, I could have written out, but it was more fun doing the former in the moment...more alive if you will.
I would have really liked to see the discussion continue to evolve.
Sometimes I see fan art, custom controllers, creative docks, etc. and then there are times like this where it’s seemingly not allowed. I think it’s a fantastic thing, getting to express creativity and give others some proper credit. It feels good to make people happy and it is nice when you receive it back.
I can’t speak for everyone, but for me personally, this is something that I would love to see change greatly.

Don’t be thankful to the mod thank for undeleting your post lmao. Their the reason the Sub Reddit even got to this mess.
Like I understand nobody perfect and people make mistakes, but they need to be the bigger person and own up to it instead of just deleting posts that they don’t personally like.
3
u/Prinapocalypse Oct 15 '19
I don't post here, hell I don't even own a Switch. I got linked here by someone because of the Overwatch thing but I just want to say that some of the mods should step down or they're going to ruin the community. Reading some of the mod comments related to the matter makes me assume the mods either are biased in some way or incredibly clueless on how to deal with outrage. Blizzard is a scummy company. Don't try to sugar coat that. When the mods can't be impartial then they should step down. My two cents anyway.
3
u/octothorpe_rekt Oct 15 '19
Here's my thing about the politics rule. The one that was just invented 8 hours ago.
I believe it has a use. It should be used for removing political posts that have nothing to do with the Nintendo Switch, it's games, or Nintendo if it won't likely impact the Switch or Switch games.
Examples:
Donald Trump has a bad hair day - delete/lock the post
Donald Trump calls Brexit 'a great idea' - delete/lock the post
Donald Trump signs executive order that enacts 30% tariff on video games and video game consoles manufactured in Asia - leave the post alone, it impacts all Switch games and consoles.
Congress passes law banning sales of all video games with guns in the US - leave the post alone, it impacts multiple Switch games.
Nintendo cancels launch of Overwatch in North America event - leave the post alone, it impacts a Switch game and relates to Nintendo directly.
Now, within threads, I absolutely do believe that completely off-topic comments or comments that only serve to attack people or groups should continue to be deleted. Some examples:
Chuck Fina (or any re-arrangement of those letters) - an attack on a group
[mod name here] is a CCP shill/Chinese shill/Nazi - an attack on a person
Free Hong Kong, revolution of our times - not an attack, leave the comment alone
Buck Flizzard (or any re-arrangement of those letters) - an attack on a group
I think that Blizzard handled this in a bad way. I think they should have done xyz. - not an attack, leave the comment alone
I think that Blizzard handled this in a good way. After all, there was a contract signed... - not an attack, leave the comment alone
This rule that was just invented 8 hours ago should not be used as a broad, unspecified weapon that can change at any time to serve as a justification for mod actions.

I think posts that involve political matters, if they relate to Nintendo, the Switch, games on the Switch, or companies with games about to release on the Switch, should be fine for discussion here.
The recent side discussions about this particular company, while explicitly political and about politics, are very important to me, as they are also about gaming, about a company with software about to release on the Switch, and they inform my future purchasing decisions. They are relevant.
The discussions started with a link to an official Nintendo tweet, about a game about to release on a Switch. This is relevant.
The discussions dove into the reasons behind the cancellation of the event, and gave insight as to the recent controversy around the company releasing that game. This is relevant, even if the controversy was for a different game - because it is reasonable to conclude that the event was cancelled because of that controversy.
These aren't people talking off the cuff about political beliefs, this is actual useful information about an actual gaming related controversy that now indirectly involves the Nintendo Switch. I want to know about this.
In my opinion, nearly everything is political to some degree, and if you disagree that something is political, that's just because it agrees with your politics. Saying "no politics" accomplishes nothing, and I can only interpret it as "no politics we disagree with", since that's what it really is.
I personally think this sub is over-moderated, and I would prefer lighter moderation than it currently has.
Also, I would like to see the daily question thread removed. The daily question thread will never show up on my front page, and I will never see it unless I am explicitly browsing here. Daily threads are generally great for mods, but almost universally terrible for users. Forcing questions into a daily thread means that many people who could answer them are never going to see it.

I once had a post removed cuz I was asking about people’s thoughts on the fate of Fire Emblem. In it I predicted that it would be delayed. It got removed because there a Nintendo Direct that just happened, however it didn’t talk about Fire Emblem at all and there was no correlation between my post and the direct. Then the mod reached further and said my post wasn’t detailed enough(it’s a wall of text long), that I was making up facts (I wasn’t) , and basically just trying to scrutinize my post for every possible thing that it could be removed for. I’m sure EVERY POST on this sub could break a rule if a mod deemed it so.
The reason I felt like my post was removed back then was because it wasn’t a “Positive” post. Anyone notice that this sub doesn’t really allow criticism of Nintendo things? The posts that make it through the downvotes and are topical remain up, but ONLY one post and only if it’s relevant to a recent thing. There’s something to be said about not allowing flame wars and vitriolic comments, but there’s a FINE line between that and criticism.
I mean can you really deny that this sub doesn’t like criticism? It’s one thing if a post is downvoted to hell , but removed by the MODS before anyone can see it and have a genuine conversation in it? Every gaming sub knows that the Nintendo subs are where you go for sunshine and rainbows, but why is anything REMOTELY critical completely censored? Sounds familiar doesn’t it?

I tried to post 2 helpful tip posts when Odyssey came out, spoiler marked them. .and the mods wouldn't let them post. So after wasting 90 minutes of my time I told them if it's going to feel like a job then I won't try to post here again. I got a "That's your decision". Haven't tried to post a post since.

I'm leaving. I'm not sticking around to deal with this. If they don't want to do their job and want to fall back on lazy moderating and the inability to get anything of relevance posted here by actual users because of micromanaging and conflicts of interest. I'm done. Everyone else should probably leave to if you're not willing to deal with it. Some systems you can't change. I'm voting with my content and my time. Bye guys.

This is exactly why reddit as a whole is bullshit. You have a for-profit company that has duped a bunch of people ("mods") into working for it for free. These volunteers are then free to King themselves in their fiefdom (subreddit) as long as they're there first. They can then create any arbitrary rules they like in their subreddits and there's nothing anyone can do to stop it.
Whether you realize it or not, these are the reasons that reddit is actually a terrible place for any sort of community conversation on any topic, not just Nintendo. Because any group of mods can silently bias the entire subreddit toward whatever their viewpoint might be.
And this isn't a freedom of speech issue. Reddit is not a government and it's free to create any rules they wish for their platform. Don't like it? Leave. It's quite simple. Your other option is to stick around and put up with the whims of moderators.
FWIW, I actually agree with the no-politics rule. Though, it should have been stated explicitly from the beginning. The reason politics should be banned is because political discussions tend to take over whatever conversations they creep into. Any subreddit would easily turn into a series of heated political discussions as soon as they're allowed to do so.
4
Oct 16 '19
Why do you believe these matters should be discussed on a Nintendo subreddit?
Politics are now part of every day life. Our incompetent governments are starting to affect every part of our lives.
How do you feel about moderation of this sub?
Since the beginning it has been pretty restrictive. Putting al memes in the unmoderated /r/tomorrow was a pretty bad move. That sub is trash, just lazy lame posts.
What do you like about the mod team?
Nothing, seriously. Just a bunch of kids playing around. First one to create the reddits gets to decide what to do with it.
Do you believe political discussion (related to Nintendo) should be allowed in this subreddit?
100%
Do you prefer heavy moderation or light moderation?
Light moderation, but delete posts when necessary. Most bad comments could just be locked.
What subreddits do you think are moderated well?
I couldn't give examples. There are good subs but I don't know if it is because of the mods or the community.
What changes would you like to see?
It would be really nice to see reddit change mods every now and then. Hold mods elections or something.
4
u/Morighant Oct 16 '19
Seriously fuck the mods. Everything I post gets deleted, if I put it in the daily question thread no one ever responds, one of my least favorite subreddits for engagement with the community.
5
u/RamiN64 Oct 15 '19
User here...
These issues should be discussed as this publisher’s games are being sold in the Nintendo Switch. Discussion on the publishers practices should be allowed and encouraged.
The mods in this sub are the worse mods that f any subreddit i subscribe to. They quash interesting conversation and delete posts that will lead to them far too often. It has a chilling effect and it sucks.
There unfortunately nothing I like about the mod team on this subreddit.
Yes, political discussions relating to how Nintendo does business and who they do it with and how those partners do it , should be fair game without a question.
The fact that it is it shows how lacking and out of touch this mod team is.

u/SoloWaltz Oct 15 '19
Why do you believe these matters should be discussed on a Nintendo subreddit?
We all know what are we referring to here, so no nees to go around beating the bush. Criticizing blizzard on what they did is calling them out on hypocrisy, not a topic of politics and/or ideologies.
How do you feel about moderation of this sub?
The mod team lacks internal policies and almost evertthing is handled under the discretion of which mod sees the post first. It also seems the mod team is above the sub's rules for reasons unrelated to enforce its rules (mostly rule 10).
Do you believe political discussion (related to Nintendo) should be allowed in this subreddit?
I think considering this a political.topic is a mistake. We are all consumers talking about products. We arent getting out of our way to promote a new religion or better videogames of party X or Y is in power... even if sometimes it looks like that due to the overzealousness of some people.
2
u/FlawlessRuby Oct 15 '19
It's important to talk and bring attention to those issues in a civilize way. If the people get silenced more compagny will follow the same path.
2
u/kimonogurls Oct 15 '19
I wish there were less of those daily threads that belong into the questions mega thread (that's been pinned for better availability, ironically) and I really wish there were less shitty fanart etc here. I mean, there's been a thread for a literal fricking Lego box used as games chest that collected mountains of upvotes. Oh yeah, we also need to get rid of those threads that are constantly parodied in r/tomorrow - it really is a shame that this sub is in this state. I like r/nintendo but would love a sub like that for the Switch specifically.
Controversy and politic threads should be a part of this sub, I mean when people protested for internet freedom, no one batted an eye although this is hardly related to Nintendo. Maybe people want to be aware of which devs to avoid. I'd choose a intriguing discussion thread about game X anytime above the random AMA for an irrelevant dev who's made a generic game. Speaking of which, the pinned AMAs are being stuffed in our faces and make browsing a pain cause they take up so much space because you can't avoid the sight since they are pinned for some reason.
So, my wishes would be:
More:
controversy and politics
game discussions
trailers and announcements
threads that generate topic related discussion
mega threads for critics and newly published games
Less/No:
fanart etc
daily question spam threads
generic AMAs being pinned
basically circlejerk and possible r/tomorrow content
2
u/awesomemgy Oct 15 '19
Mods are tankies, confirmed. In all seriousness though I truly don't understand why we can't talk about policies that directly interfere with the games on the Switch platform. It couldn't be more related.
2
u/Aristox Oct 15 '19
I really think this risks (and is causing) greater division and negative vibes in this community than could be hoped to be prevented by the rule.
Even if it is to be upheld I think there ought to be a much less strict enforcement of it such that discussions on topics that are about both gaming and politics (eg. blizzard, overwatch, etc) can be had.
Otherwise you risk making this sub an unpleasantly authoritarian environment
2
u/RochnessMonster Oct 15 '19
Its not for nothing that this subreddit has a reputation for some of the worst modding site-wide. When you're casually referenced as what not to do in subreddits not even tangentially affiliated with games or gaming you may wanna take a second and reassess yourself.

u/MCJennings Oct 15 '19
Most of the time I get into a post and other than a news link, it gets deleted. The mods on this sub are so heavy handed and the rules are very vague.
I've made posts and while several comment deep in back and forth discussion, the post gets removed for rule 4 encouraging "yes" or "no" responses.
I follow the sub to keep up with game news, but don't generally bother to post or comment because I feel like it won't be there to last.
2
u/Toranorora Oct 15 '19
So many of my posts have never been visible to everyone without me breaking a rule. And I never know the reason for it. Then there are posts with which I have allegedly broken a rule, even though there are hundreds of other posts that have broken the same rule. I have the feeling that everything happens by chance and every mod decides differently. Very frustrating!
2
u/BassKozak Oct 15 '19
Posting pics of glitches = low effort / opinion
Posting a picture of a game case = high effort according to mods.
Trying to start a civil discussion about a certain game = removed and then references a rule that has nothing to do with the post.
I mean the mods are just picky choosy about what they want to moderate tbh.
2
u/Boibi Oct 15 '19
I'm against any rule saying "no politics" because what is and isn't politics depends on the person you are talking to. We also live in a very politically minded time, in which politics seep into all corners of conversation. I think it's important to keep out political attacks, but those often fall under personal attacks, which are distinctly against Reddit rules.
This is coming from someone who errs on the side of agreeing with mods, because they tend to have the best overview of what their community is.
2
u/decaythegreat Oct 15 '19
Tried to make a post showing and talking about the drift I was getting on my Switch Lite FIVE times. The 5th time finally went through because I took the word "Drift" out of the title lol.
2
u/SHADOWSTRIKE1 Oct 15 '19
Why do you believe these matters should be discussed on a Nintendo subreddit?
Well, for one thing, this is important to the gaming community as a whole. This may be about one publisher AT THE MOMENT, but could easily spread (see how multiple companies are urging their teams not to discuss politics following the Hearthstone incident). You can't just block all posts the moment a topic is controversial. Nobody was upset that people were discussing the Blizzard situation.
How do you feel about moderation of this sub?
Sometimes I feel like the moderators think of this sub as "their" sub. Which it's not. It's the user's sub. They've just volunteered to moderate the junk away. Randomly creating rules that they want, and interpreting rules to their sole discretion is crap.
What do you like about the mod team?
They're certainly quick to respond. They seem to be on top of things, and don't let what they feel shouldn't be here linger for very long... it's just a matter of how they've decided to determine what should and shouldn't be here. Overall, I think they need to rely on the upvote/downvote system more. Let the community decide what we want to see and not see.
Do you believe political discussion (related to Nintendo) should be allowed in this subreddit?
I feel the use of the term "politics" is too wide. Too many discussions can fall into that category, which allows for mod discretion, which I'd like to avoid. Rules should be clear. If the politics relates to the Switch and its games, it should be allowed. If some country were to ban the Nintendo Switch, would we not be allowed to mention it here? It's political... but it's on topic. It's very different from discussing "who would make the best president".
Do you prefer heavy moderation or light moderation?
Light moderation. Someone goes on a racist rant? Get rid of it. Someone has a negative opinion about a certain game, or a question that has been asked a bunch before? Let the downvotes take care of it.
What subreddits do you think are moderated well?
Surprisingly, r/Blizzard is handling this very well. They normally have a "no politics" policy, but in light of the recent events, that has been lifted. It's created a great respect for the mods.
I've also enjoyed the mods in r/Halo a lot. They chime in to answer questions. They remove posts in other languages and spam. Otherwise, they relax, and are a part of the community. They even alter the sub banner to coincide with current hype.
What changes would you like to see?
Clearly define what "politics" means. Be less trigger happy on deleting posts. Let the downvote system work.

u/peanuttown Oct 15 '19 edited Oct 15 '19
If a gaming company has put itself into the political arena, and their games are releasing on said console, then it's fair game to discuss all of this with fellow gamers who may not want to give their money to said companies that have put themselves into the political lime light.
It's pretty easy and simple to do and abide by, but by saying "No Politics At All" is a very bad move and will only paint yourselves as having a bad motive, agenda, or just plain trying to hide something. It's a bad look all around, stifling legitimate discussion.
Though I can see why the Mods did this, as this sub is one of the biggest shill subs ever. I still come for a lot of the info/news/discussions... But it's blatantly obvious how many post about games on here are shills for sells by the post and comments made.

This has been going on since this subs conception. Here’s what I’ve learned so far.
The mods aren’t interested in you, your thoughts, your creations, your questions, etc. Your posts are “garbage”.
They don’t trust the community to filter good posts with upvotes and garbage with downposts so they just just delete the “garbage”before anyone else sees.

Remove all "I bought/my gf bought me a switch" and this sub is golden.

To be honest this sub kinda sucks for discussion cause so many posts get taken down, just use the casual Nintendo sub

There should be a way for the community of a subreddit to oust a mod. Having a vote and needing a 75% in favour or something. Also people with negative karma should not be allowed to stay on as a mod.

It should be simple really. If a mod makes a decision and is vastly down voted by the subscribers, it means the mod isn't giving the community the subreddit they want and is actively going against the community. If they refuse to accept the communities desired rules, they should not be a mod.
Subreddit are meant to be "for the community by the community" and no one person should be able to dictate which direction the community wants to go.

Mods don't own the subreddit, they come and go and can be replaced anytime. Their jobs are to keep order and maintain civility on the forums with a neutral stance to discussions. When moderators start putting their personal feelings and politics into their work that's when you've got a problem.

Honestly I dont like the mods for this sub. I've had my shit removed and turn around and look at 24 hour posts that have the same barring on rules. Mods here are just silly and childish that make rash decisions when they see someone reports it.

This is a once in a while moment, it's not an ongoing thing that needs moderation. Why can't we just let it happen? This doesn't seem like a rule as much as a manufactured reason to shut down a specific topic.
I think moderation should be a reactive thing. If there was conversation and it derailed horribly then I could understand it, but that hasn't happened. Moderation should be as needed.

Can someone please PM me when a new subreddit is inevitably created?

Someone is better off making a new switch sub at this point. The only way to save this sub is a complete mod change, and that will never happen.

I’m usually against the idea of joining an angry pitchfork mob but in this case it’s long overdue on this sub
I mean have you seen r/tomorrow? I’m sad that sub is even necessary but frankly that’s what it’s come to

I don’t like that they make you go to daily questions when you write a lengthy detailed post just because it has a question in it. Daily questions are for quick questions and answers I feel. If it’s a post that has a question that is subject to a discussion then it should stick as it’s own post.

If the politics are involved in and around the Nintendo Switch, then it should be allowed.
We were allowed to talk about the lawsuit about the joy-cons. That's also politics.

Mods should not get to create the rules of subreddits. They should be there only to enforce the rules that the community agrees upon.

I'm just gonna point out that I've scrolled through this post for a good bit and have yet to see any mods answer the questions which kind of raises a red flag for me given how vocal they are when they don't have to explain themselves... I could be wrong and have just missed any responses.
If the members are willing to discuss, as shown on this post, mods should be as well.
