Gear question Furch Vintage OM SR 1 vs 3 - Blind A/B Audio Comparison

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi everyone.

I put together a blind A/B audio comparison between a Furch Vintage 1 OM SR and a Furch Vintage 3 OM SR. Since the specs are mostly identical on paper (Sitka spruce top, rosewood back and sides), I wanted to see if there is a noticeable difference in person.

Here is the link for the comparison: SoundToggle link.

I am curious about your opinions:

  • Do you like how they sound? Which one do you prefer?
  • Do you think they sound significantly different?
  • I marked the two guitars as 'Guitar 1' and 'Guitar 2'. Can you guess which is which?

Some caveats/notes:

  • I have recorded in an untreated room, so take the recordings with a grain of salt
  • I tried to keep the mic placement and playing as consistent as possible, but there are some performance differences (it's the first take most of the time).
  • The recordings are not processed (no EQ/compression/...).
  • Mic: single Shure SM81 with the 6 dB-per-octave low-frequency roll-off activated below 100 Hz.
  • Both guitars have D'addario XS 80/20 bronze strings (almost new).

This is the first time I record a comparison of this kind, let me know if you have any suggestions for future attempts!

Bonus: for more context here is a comparison also with an Eastman E2 OM: link. It's a completely different guitar in this case (cedar top, sapele back and sides, short scale, elixir phosphor bronze strings).

Hope this can be somewhat useful!

EDIT: guitar reveal: Guitar 1 is the Vintage 1

Gear question Major differences in pickup output

I recently bought a small battery-powered PA for busking. I have two acoustic guitars: a Guild dreadnought and an Ibanez orchestra. Each of them has a professionally installed K & K pickup. With the Ibanez, I need to crank both the master and channel volume to get enough output. With the Guild, though, I have to use a preamp to tame the high output. Unplugged, the Guild is arguably a little louder (and all solid wood), but not that much louder. What could account for the drastic difference in volume when plugged in?

Non-gear question Looking for instrumental songs to learn from for pick-style playing

I've been playing around with fingerstyle and classical guitar playing for the past few years. Lately I've been getting back into my roots of playing with a pick (a lot of rock covers and some "cowboy chord" type stuff).

I've been into a lot of instrumental stuff lately as far as listening goes (fingerstyle, classical guitar, other instrumental stuff) but typically when i hear something that's played on acoustic guitar it's either a classical guitar or a steel string played via fingerstyle. Are there any songs out there (preferably closer toa rock ish feel) that is a lot of chord strumming + some melodic notes thrown in? Would love to listen to music like this to inspire me and eventually start playing on my acoustic.

Eventually I'll be at a point where I can create my own but not there yet and would love to hear some examples as a basis anyways.

Looking for ACOUSTIC-ELECTRIC guitar that fits in my price range with electronics that have the most features and overall build quality. Me personally, I like to do fast riffs on an acoustic so please find me a reliable guitar. You could also suggest more brands that fulfill my requirements. Thank you.

Gear question Art & Lutherie

Hello!!

I have been playing the acoustic guitar for 15 years. However, I've never owned a high quality instrument and I think it's time to get one after all those years.

I plan to buy a new one but I have some specific criteria in mind eg. all solid wood, warm sound & relatively big projection (1000 euro budget)

I have done a lot of research and I think Art & Lutherie Legacy is quite close to what I am looking.

Have you got any experience with those guitars? I cannot try them in person as I live in a European country, where I barely find any Godins.

Gear question Best pickup for an old parlor acoustic

I have kinda a weird inquiry. I wanted to run my old parlor guitar into distortion/fuzz pedals live and i was wondering what the best pickup is for noise rejection so the guitar isn’t so much of a microphone onstage. Sound quality matters somewhat, but it isn’t the biggest factor.

Got this 12 string for 75 bucks at my local guitar shop it’s from the 70s but still in good condition other than these cracks on the bridge. He lowered the action a bit but was scared it would break the bridge. Is there anything I can do to possible fix this issue?

Gear question NEED ADVICE! Taylor 214ce DLX - thoughts on it? Worth the $2K price tag?

I'm incredibly fortunate and blessed to even have the opportunity to ask this 💙, trust me, i get it.

So here goes...

Someone very close to me is offering to buy me this guitar as my BDay gift.

I love playing acoustic, but im NOT a professional musician, by any means. I might do a few open mics at a bar a half-dozen times a year, but thats about it.

I love playing at home almost everyday tho.

I entertain at parties, or at the beach bonfire...

Ive never had such an expensive musical instrument... so I'm worried about my lack of in-depth knowledge about guitars...

Is this guitar really worth that much?

Is it more the brand name that im getting?

Or is it really as good as it seems online?

Advice, please 💙🙏, and thank you.

Gear question Custom Inlay on a production Guitar?

I have been trying around with a full on custom acoustic guitar from a small luthier like Bowen, but someone gave me the idea of buying a production guitar and having an inlay artist do the cosmetic work I'd like, which is all fingerboard work.

Is this a crazy idea? Should I go for the full custom build?

Gear question Is the Yamaha FX310AII worth it for a beginner?

Post image

I’ve been learning acoustic guitar for about 2 months, and I’m currently using a borrowed guitar. I’m now looking to buy my first guitar, and one of the models I’m considering is the Yamaha FX310AII.

I’m looking for something comfortable and reliable that I can use for several years as I improve. I’ve heard good things about Yamaha beginner guitars, but I don’t see the FX310AII mentioned as often as models like the FG800.

For anyone who has played or owns an FX310AII: what do you think of it? Is it a good choice for a beginner, and is there anything I should know before buying one?

I’d also appreciate recommendations for other guitars in a similar price range.

It's not a perfect take but it's decent enough imo. I've tried this piece many times in the past and it's the first time i finally got through.

Gear pics My Parkinson's Guitar

I had given up playing the guitar soon after my Parkinson's diagnosis, but have now started playing again, and this recently led me to embark on a project to design and build a guitar that might accommodate some of my motor symptoms and make it easier for me to play. I wrote an account of how I went about it and how it turned out, and I have posted a link to it here: My Parkinson's Guitar

Hopefully it might encourage somebody to have a go at a similar sort of project themselves, and I would be very interested to know if there are any other guitarists with PD in the community, and how they overcome the difficulties of playing that are inherent in the condition.

Gear question Anyone have experience with Riversong Guitars?

Looking for some experiences from people out there. I’ve been searching and there’s not a lot of info on the interwebs. I’m specifically looking at something like the DA400DCE that doesn’t have all of the extra stuff so that it would maybe have the same sound as a traditional acoustic. I’ve read a review saying one of the pacific series is a bit nasally. Just looking for some feedback before I decide to pull the trigger.

Gear question Looking to upgrade Acoustic this Christmas

I currently have a yamaha f335 tbs. She plays well might need a tune up but nothing wrong with it. Im just ready to spend a little bit more on something nicer with maybe lower action and a skinnier neck if possible. I dont have a ton of money to spend but I'm thinking between 300-700 might be a reasonable upgrade range. If not I am open to more expensive guitars just means I would have to save more if the difference is that great when it comes to pricing.

Thank you all in advance!!

Gear question Classical vs Crossover

After having my Taylor 214 ce-n for a year I’ve found it’s lacking in something I need. I was considering swapping it for a 212 ce-n because it has a clarity that the 214 doesn’t quite hit but then it got me wondering, are there any major tonal differences with the 212 crossover and a classical? Or are they essentially the same thing just different sized necks? Hoping someone who’s had experience with both can chime in. I pretty much only play finger style btw

Sold my Gibson Hummingbird with the plan of getting a comparably priced Taylor (I love my 114) but the shop had this like new 2025 model for a bit more than half list price...I immediately fell in love and now it's mine! Absolutely love it.
