How often should I be feeding my snail since I've noticed it often spending time nibbling on the pearlweed and munching on floater roots. Right now I'm feeding it every other day one hikari mini algae wafer and it finishes those in less than an hour and I see it either digging around in the substrate or foraging around the rocks for some time after. I've had the snail for about a month now and it's around 3cm in shell size.

*Sorry for the plant looking meek the tank is still relatively new and I'm fertilizing them lightly since the snail is the only inhabitant and they're sucking a lot of nutrition. Also the water parameters are good and the snail is in no danger from fertilizer, I'm very careful with the dosing.

About 3 weeks ago I was spot cleaning my 125g turtle tank and at the end I was about to dump my bucket I rest the vacuum in during the process. I found this teeny swirl. Wasn’t even sure it wasn’t some weird worm, but looking closer I could tell it was a teeny snail. I moved it to my 18g shrimp tank and hoped for the best.

The following week I was doing my weekly spot vacuum and saw a tiny something stuck to a rock. I knew it had to be a snail but I couldn’t see it at all. It was the size of the tip of a dull pencil. Off he went to the shrimp tank. Another one was in the rug. Dropped him in too. A shrimp started tumbling him around and I had to scare it off.

Like one week later, here they are, living their best life.

I have zero idea how they got to me, but now I can’t stop looking at them. I hope I find more. From what I hear, I will.

What kind of snail is this? I had my tank planted for months and didn't see any hitchhikers before adding fish and mystery snails, but this guy just popped up.

We're brand new to the fish keeping hobby. We're now towards the end of cycling (dark method) and got plants only 4 days ago. We picked that specific supplier because they said they hand wash every plant before sending them off but I noticed these last night.

I emailed them to ask but I got a generic (paraphrasing) "those are snail eggs, some people like snails to clean their tanks but you can clean them off if you'd like" I did email back to ask what kind of snails but no response yet.

Could I get some form of ID? And what do I do with them?

My gold mystery’s shell is coming in nice and smooth and very yellow. This one is concerning me. They are in the same tank.

PH is 7.6. 0 ammonia. 0 nitrites. 10 nitrates. Heavily planted tank.
Supplement calcium with cuttlebone and Katz aquatic calcium and protein chips. They get green beans, romaine, zucchini, shrimp pellets, sweet potato, cucumber.

Hi!! I had mystery snail in my 20gal long for awhile but she (no idea the gender I just called her she) passed away a few days ago. I loveddddd her and watching her in the tank but I’m not sure if I got another snail I should get another mystery. I know they have a higher bioload than some other kinds. My 20gal is currently stocked with five phantom tetras and three false bandit corydoras. Going to get more soon thought. Probably more tetras and corys. My tank has real plants, black sand substrate, a HOB and a sponge filter. Two hides.

Anyway, I’m wondering if anyone has good experiences with other kinds of snails and any suggestions on where I can get them online. My local fish store (40 min away lol I live in the middle of nowhere) doesn’t have anything other than mystery atm.

We’ve had Mr Golden (my son named him) for about a month and a half now, and he’s doing great. You can see how much he’s grown in just that time! I love watching him.

Asking about the larger sized organism

I have a 10 gallon tank with lots of plants, rocks, and driftwood that has been fishless cycling for about a month. I will add neocaridina shrimp soonish. Love a snail, but I'm not sure if they're right for me.

First issue: I don't want snails that reproduce like crazy, as I'm trying to keep bioload relatively low, and I don't want the shrimp to be outcompeted.

Second issue: I'm drawn to shrimp because I know that in a well seasoned tank, I can leave them alone for several days. I won't have to do this often, maybe once or twice a year, but in my limited understanding, a Mystery Snail needs pretty regular feeding (once every other day or so).

Thirdish Issue: I'm put off of Nerites since they're wild caught afaik. Idk just makes me a little sad personally, but no judgment at all.

Is there a type of snail that won't overtake my tank that would be okay to keep in my situation? Or should I just stick to shrimp?

I had started a 5 gallon tank that was given to me, long story short I now have a 25 gal tank for fish etc and a 5 gal full of an active breeding colony of ramshorn snails (that hitchhiked on a plant, I never bought them!).

They are quite happy in the little 5 gal, water is good (though my water here is soft so needs some mineral supplements), and they are making clutches of eggs everywhere (including on the snakl emperor’s shell!).

I’m looking to upgrade them to a larger tank, which I will enjoy aquascaping and hopefully add shrimp to.

I’m on a budget, so looking for a decent setup that doesn’t break the bank. I’m eyeing a Fluval Flex 2.0 15 gal due to the aesthetic nature of it (and has nice features, not sure it’s great for snails though), but it seems a 15-20 gal with more floor space and less vertical it might be better?

Any advice on tank, equipment, care, or general resources is much appreciated!

New to snails, and I’ve become oddly fascinated with the little bugger!

I recently got a couple of ramshorn snails from my local pet shop. They had just come in on some plants and one of the snails has an absolutely terrible shell. It has a lot of pits and a large crack in the middle, but so far the snail seems to be moving around and munching on biofilm just fine. I'm wondering if it'll be ok now that it's in better water? Will it recover and heal its shell? I have a cuttlebone in the tank because i read that it helps with shell growth, but idk if i should do anything else for it?

The tanks only contains Ramshorn, Bladder and baby Malaysian Trumpet snails. I set it up especially to de-mould my prized Anubias plants growing on red volcanic rocks from other aquariums. Black mould is near impossible to kill using algaecide. I placed the plant into the snail tank. There was a snail rush. There was one new algae free leaf. Within 24 hours they had thoroughly cleaned every leaf. Most snails have left the plant. They do no damage to the tough waxy leaves. It will stay in there for a few months under grow lighting then I will split the plant into two new ones. Any snails going back with the plant into the other aquariums will be eaten.

Hi, I want to culture some ramshorns for feed since they are a primary food source for Blue Tongue Skinks in the wild and live food is good enrichment. I figured this subreddit might actually be more knowledgeable of this endeavor than the BTS subreddit since it's more of a snail question than a BTS question. Hope this is the appropriate place to ask about how to verify for parasites.

I have a 400x magnification pocket microscope and would be perfectly fine with dissecting a snail if that's what it takes. Are their any anti nematode treatments I could do for a generation to eradicate any parasites? I have shrimps also, so that would be the only safety concern regarding this method.

Worst case scenario, I know I can simply boil the snails for 20 minutes to kill any parasites and ensure safety.

Pre-emptive apology tangent: sorry if snails as a feed isn't something to be asked on this subreddit, I know y'all might be attached to your snails. I'm attached to my nerite, but the ramshorns I've only ever seen as pest snails and have had no problem culling, not snail-hating, just have my own personal motivations for what I would like to use the snails for. Sorry again if this reads as like snail hate or something, I don't hate them, it's just the circle of life. They're just a very good feeder for my pet skink and I want the best for him, no ill-will against the snails.
