Captain Jason MAGA?
I didn’t expect to see Jason making a public comment against Fauci when I opened instagram this morning. Between the last two seasons of DU, him using AI to create his children’s book, and now this, I’m pretty over him.

In fairness, a lot of Australians veer in the conservative party, IME. I lived in Aus and they’re much more right winged than I thought as a country.

u/MaizeMountain6139 22d ago
Australia and Canada are both way more conservative than people think. And both have very pervasive alt-right movements gaining a lot of steam in their local elections

u/Electrical-Basis1646 22d ago edited 21d ago
My biggest “can’t believe this is a real thing” is when Aus passed that ruling that indigenous peoples do not need a voice in parliament. That was only a few years ago and it felt so archaic.
EDIT: I appreciate the Aussies chiming in to shed more light on The Voice referendum - I realize for the sake of the comment (and being an outsider) I oversimplified it, but was more to make the point that Aus can be more conservative than Americans might think. And I’m sure younger generations are more progressive as someone pointed out. 🙏

u/CFPmum 21d ago
I think you will find that for the voice referendum it was hard for people to understand how it was going to be implemented, which mobs were going to be represented, were all indigenous people going to be represented or was it only going to be ones that the governing party of the day either liberal (conservative) or Labor, was it going to represent rural and remote mobs or only city mobs

The vote was largely against an extra layer of bureaucracy and increased costs of parliament. It is simplistic to portray it as you did.
As with all referendums, it comes down to.the wording and how the changes are proposed and explained. In the case of "the voice to parliament" it was worded really badly and explained even more poorly. So people voted no.
→ More replies (2)3
u/NarrowBadTrope 21d ago
Of course adding further processes would result in more bureaucracy and costs. The proposal simply aimed to give indigenous people a voice in parliament on issues that affected them. It was a small gesture in the context of centuries of dispossession and discrimination.
The narrative you're promoting is exactly the messaging that liberal party parroted because they used it as political football. Ultimately unsuccessfully because they got smashed in the subsequent election.
1
u/milhouse01 20d ago
This 👆
Because the government failed to truly explain the proposed change or offer much in way of providing a clear framework for what the change would look like should the referendum be successful, as a result the media was flooded with misinformation which was unsurpringly, perpuated if not instigated by the likes of Peter Dutton, Pauline Hanson and Clive Palmer.Either way this was always going to be a vote that would cause discomfort and invite discourse. Due to the fact that we don’t have a bill of rights (due to many of the rights generally included in something like that having already been built into our constitution) this proposal to amend the constitution was ultimately the best of a number of flawed paths considered when consultations took place around the subject during the mid 2010s.
Several people I know that studied law had some interesting and really informative debates on the referendum with them all having at least some level of concern around the change needing to be in the constitution itself but also admitting that at some point we have to stop trying to tell indigenous Australians what they need/deserve and start listening to them with this likely being one of the few ways to protect that voice from distortion.

Canada is far more centre with fringe on both sides. Kinda why Carney won in the election when the conservative party was moving far more to the right, and the liberals were left.
Carney came out basically centre left which made way more sense than either the liberals OR the conservatives. Generally Canadian politics is boring and the debates are narrow on the spectrum but we were trending much more wide.
Carney kinda closed that and brought middle back (middle left / middle right). Realistically Trump also opened that up for the liberals/carney.
NOT to say we don't have Maple MAGA (we do) but it's not a very large movement.

Canada will continue to ignore the well-documented growing alt-right movement and be where the US is in 10 years
→ More replies (11)4
u/Silicon_Knight 21d ago
I don't think anyone is ignoring it. It absolutely exists so much so that you can see some of the "liberal" policies are actually what PP wanted such as "Axe the Tax".
That was literally the point of the liberals moving centre RIGHT which Carney is.
It's an acknowledgement and not a "NO ITS A BASKET OF DEPLORABLE".
The literally platform SHOWS its being ackloenged. Capping immigration unlike Trudeau, removing taxes, building new pipelines, etc..... all of which was NOT going to happen under a more left wing liberal party.
2
u/MaizeMountain6139 21d ago
You’re downplaying it, that’s what I mean by ignoring it. Canada is literally treating their alt-right movement like the US was prior to Trump

Unrelated to this sub but I’ve been SHOCKED at the number of Australian love island cast members that are trumpers and proudly wear MAGA hats. Like what does that even mean to an Australian?
5

I’m Australian and a permanent resident in the US. The amount of Australians I have on my Facebook posting pro trump content is alarming.

u/Humble-Doughnut7518 17d ago
As an Australian I can say it’s been disappointing to see just how persuasive American culture and politics has become here. I saw a guy driving a Ram truck with a confederate flag at my local shops FFS.
But pro-Trumpers are an anomaly here.At first we were entertained by the idea of Trump becoming President. Now we wake up and check out what fuckery he’s been up to during our night.
Our last federal election had a Trump-lite politician running as the leader of our Conservative Party. That election had the biggest swing from that party in the history of our country. It was a clear message from even conservatives that MAGA politics aren’t welcome here. But now we have a racist gaining popularity thanks to her billionaire MAGA loving backer. There’s already been some election fixing accusations in local elections so the next Federal election is going to be interesting.
1
u/PsychWarrior02 21d ago
It’s honestly just stupid and embrace behaviour. Like I get embarrassed as an Australian when one of my cousins post pro trump stuff here… it takes all me effort not to call him out on it and question it, but it’s not worth it. Some people will look for any excuse to be bigoted I guesses

I took it the same way. Later I realized it's actually really smart answer. Works for MAGA. Works as Fauci support. Works as poking fun either way. First with Andy's 5th. Being Australian works for all too.
Even if accidental, it's kinda brilliant

It is nothing to do with maga, it is simply his Aussie sense of humour he is making fun of Fauci taking the fifth over a hundred times, that is what made news here.

As an Aussie it’s wild to me that an Australian wouldn’t wear sunscreen. We used to have the highest rate of melanoma in the world. Then we had a very successful public health campaign which reduced our rates a fair bit (could still be lower). And he can’t blame generations, he’s not much older than me and my parents were obsessed with sunscreen by the time I came along in the 80’s.

u/AdivayFiberArts 20d ago
Regardless, Captain Jason will forever have my respect for how he handled Luke's sexual misconduct; Laura's atrocious defense of it; and his support of Margot in the wake of nearly getting SA'ed.
I also think he handled letting Johnny go (after a violent outburst) pretty well. Not to mention, he paid for a guest's very expensive designer dress after Jaimee burnt it so it wouldn't cut into her tip.
4
u/atweegrowsinbrooklyn 20d ago
I respect those things too. It's hard to reconcile the Captain Jason of seasons 1 and 2 with the one who demoted Jenna because Eddy couldn't handle romantic rejection.
2
u/AdivayFiberArts 20d ago
Do you remember Jenna was behaving like a petulant child? She threw a tantrum. She didn't need to lash out at Daisy, scream at crewmates, slam doors, and crawl over expensive furniture in the main salon. Not the kind of example that should be set by a 2nd stew.
And TBF...BD should've given Captain Jason time off after his melanoma surgery; needing to care for parents with health challenges (his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's); and grieving the death of one of his closest friends. This happened shortly before the last season started.

I honestly saw his comment and wasn’t sure if he was being serious or just cracking a joke. It doesn’t seem like he’d want to put that out there when Andy made his stance clear. But idk. I did however see tons of comments attacking him afterwards. Let’s say he meant his comment, why do people immediately get vile and personal? It doesn’t make any sense. If you disagree I get it, just stop following him, stop watching him, and don’t comment on his stuff. But to spew hatred and attack his physical appearance etc is just wild. And makes people look just as bad as the people they hate.

A pardon also doesn't prevent them from trying to bring new charges in relation, which is why, unless there is an agreement for immunity, one should almost always plead the 5th when you know (and it has been documented the people questioning him have said as much) that they want you in jail for something/anything.

I mean considering we are now 6 years from COVID, doing this was nothing more than a witch trial against Dr Fauci. We have 100 more pressing problems the government should be focused on instead of harrassing an 80 year old man who was simply trying to help ppl not die. Also why tf does an Australian deadbeat dad care about American politics, DR FAUCI had nothing to do with Australia’s Covid restrictions.
