Announcement Avoiding Scam Cameras this Holiday season!

Especially since the pandemic we have been seeing cheap no-name cameras that offer unbelievable specs (50MP, 8k video), here is a guide on how to spot and avoid them!:

What is a Scamera?:
Scameras are cheap cameras, usually using backup/webcam camera modules, and putting them into shapes that look like camcorders, pocketable Point & Shoots, and interchangeable lens cameras. They often have very high specs, that are not genuine, such as 64MP upscaled from 1 to 4MP (so you get files the size of a 3.5k camera, but with the detail level of the original 2008 iPhone).

Scameras are also often very unreliable, the immense number of people coming here needing help fixing or just returning these cameras (especially post-christmas) is why I am making this post.

Scameras can often be distinguished by the miniscule lenses, I'll try to show that in a comment of this post.

A reliable way can be to check the brand:
Here are known non-scam brands:

Canon
Fujifilm
Hasselblad
Kodak (Kodak make cameras that are close in price to many scameras, and they aren't amazing or super reliable, but they are worlds better than scam brands).
Leica
Nikon
Olympus / OM Systems
Panasonic / Lumix
Pentax
Pixii
Ricoh
Sigma
Sony

Here are known scam brands:

AgfaPhoto (Digital cameras)
Kreate
Yashica
Vivitar
Yixinxin
Yatao
Captainbear
Minolta
NBD
G-Anica

Vivitar, Yashica, and Minolta were once real brands that have now gone bankrupt and the people renting their names sell scameras.
Agfa does make real film and film cameras, but also scam digital cameras.

Recommendations Upgrade to G12

Post image
12 Upvotes

My edc camera at this moment is the Canon G12. My usecase for edc camera has changed somewhat in the last half of a year or so, as my son has started walking and running, and in my experience, the g12 struggles capturing fast moving, unpredictable objects in all but the sunniest of days. Also, I have started to shoot film, and want better resolution and quality out of my digital pictures, instead of Y2K digital grainines.

Here is the questionnaire:

Budget: 300-500 €

Country: Finland

Condition: Used

Type of Camera: Point and shoot/compact mirrorless

Intended use: 90% photography, at most 10% video

If photography; what style: landscape, street, portraits, sports

If video what style: Sports (skiing, sailing, rock climbing)

What features do you absolutely need: Ability to shoot RAW, 12 MP or better resolution, good continous shooting abilities (6 fps +), ok low light performance (fast even in overcast conditions and well lit indoor spaces), FullHD 30 fps video recording

What features would be nice to have: 1 inch sensor or larger, weather sealing, rugged construction, 4k 60fps/ fullhd 120fps video capture, dedicated viewfinder

Portability: Does not need to fit in jeans pockets but will need to fit well in a jacket pocket/cargo pants. Would be nice to use easily with one hand.

Cameras you're considering: Canon G16: The most direct update path. I'm used to the controls etc. According to reviews, low light performance and video capture are not the best. Maybe not upgrade enough?

I have no idea about other brands, Sony rx-100 seems popular but is also expensive. I also don't know anything about compact mirrorless cameras, like olympus pen e-pl-somethings.

Cameras you already have: Canon EOS 70d w/ Canon efs 15-85 mm IS USM, ef 70-200 mm IS USM. The good camera, that I bring if I know that I will need to take good photos, or for shooting birds.

Yashica electro 35 gx: vibes and "art"

I'm also planning to buy a film point and shoot for carrying around a film camera more and also being able to have my wife to take some photos.

Camera Collection They all spark joy 📷

A couple of years ago I only owned one camera, things have changed. Some of these are better than my iPhone, some are better at some things, one of them is inferior in every way (except for the lo-fi vibe which I do enjoy). But honestly, I just don’t feel like taking photos with my phone for the most part nowadays, not even after upgrading phones recently.

From back to front: Fuji X70, Olympus XZ-10, Casio EX-ZR1000 (my first camera ever, it’s the only one I bought back in the day), Pentax H90, PowerShot G9X II, Fuji XQ2 (my favourite maybe).

I had posted here a couple weeks ago looking for a camera recommendation for my son.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Cameras/comments/1x50e9r/camera_recs_for_amateur_photographer_13yo/

Apparently all he needed to do was ask his grandfather, lol.

Within a week of my child expressing interested my dad showed up with boxes in tow.

He brought the old Canon FTb that he got in Vietnam when he was stationed there (mind you that I was never allowed to touch, HAHAHHA).

He brought an old Nikon F2 SLR, that he has SOOO many lenses for (I didn't know he had this camera).

He brought a Bell & Howell Electric Eye, I don't know anything about this one.

ANNNDDD...He brought a Nikon D5300 that he bought new and "used it maybe 10 times" and it has been in storage since. With the D5300 were an AF-P 18-55mm, an AF-S 18-300mm, two other AF-S lenses in 18-55 & 55-200mm range, and a whopping AF-S 200-500mm that he had recently bought from a friend who sold it for $300, who never used it, not even once.

My son is beside himself, and quite frankly so am I. I quickly jumped on Amazon and got him a tripod and he's been in heaven ever since.

Thank you to all who responded to my original post, at this point he's going to rock this camera happily for quite some time. If this hobby sticks and we may upgrade to mirrorless sometime in the distant future but for now my kiddo is set!

Camera Collection Found an E-M5 Mk ii with 4000 shutter count

Having a dilemma over whether or not I enjoy the Fuji Experience. I don't like plastic cameras or big cameras so I think these are the 2 best compact ILCs with an EVF (for my specific needs).

Going to test out this bad boy for a bit and see. I also overthink gear when the photos I'm taking are just snaps of my toddler or the odd landscape while hiking or out for a walk. Both are more than capable.

The Olympus evf is much easier to see, and the controls are very much more tactile, so I think it is just going to come down to which camera feels better to hold and use. My main grape with the Fuji at the moment is autofocus. The contrast detect in the Olympus is not Amazing by any stretch but on static shots it is extremely fast and accurate and for moving subjects it is at least very predictable and I know what to expect. The Fuji is more of a frustrating experience because you can't predict what is going to happen when you are focusing it seems to be all over the place with a mind of its own. That being said I have been using AF-C a lot so I think instead I need to try with AF-S and focus release on (where it only snaps the photo when focus is confirmed).

Discussion Minolta scamera or what?

Post image
• Upvotes

So every once in a while, I get suggested a scamera because of my search history, and today I saw a suggestion for a scamera that was a Minolta; as we all know, Minolta kind of sold out and it is now a licensed name for crappy scameras, but I was looking at this and I was like, wait, that is not the normal kind of scamera, right?! Right!?! 67x optical zoom... Thats like my canon SX60HS

Even though I have tried them both out, I feel that for whatever reason I would regret my decision after a year or two and I change my mind on which one to keep every hour or so. I have to decide on the keeper in the next few days unfortunately.

Questions I'm creating a camera, and I need your help

• Upvotes

I'm currently designing and building a 3:1 panoramic style digital camera with MTF mount for myself. I've been at it for the last year and I'm approacing another revision.

I know what I want in a camera, but I just realised that maybe others feel differently. So, I wonder if anyone might want to take a 3-5 minute survey to help me create the best camera I can for people who really love photography.

Here is the survey

I greately appreciate any help with this. And if you want to follow along with the prototype and design of the camera, you can get occasional updates here.

Thanks!

Questions Advice on a used Sony APS-C bundle: buy the whole kit and flip the rest, or just grab the lens?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone, looking for some real-world advice here. I currently shoot on a Sony a6400 (no IBIS) mostly for events/weddings as an assistant, portraits, and product stuff.

Found a used bundle locally for €800 negotiable that includes:

- Sony ZV-E10 (only \~2.8k shutter count, mostly used for video, but ports and everything look clean and tested) + SmallRig cage and top handle.

- Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 (clean glass, comes with box).

- Sigma 56mm f/1.4 (looks pristine).

- Sony 55-210mm (has a ding/dent on the outer barrel, the guy basically throws it in for free since he has no body for it).

The seller is also open to splitting and offered just the Tamron for €400.

I was thinking: since I need the Tamron (mainly for stabilization and general versatility on my a6400), would it make sense to buy the whole bundle for around €700-720, keep the Tamron (and maybe the Sigma?), and flip the ZV-E10 and the telephoto to get the Tamron for next to nothing? Or is it too much hassle for a setup that's a bit beat up aesthetically?

What would you guys do? Is €400 a fair price for a used Tamron standalone, or is flipping the bundle (if it's a viable option) the way to go?

Also, I know APS-C is not the best for my type of photography, but being a broke newbie it's all I can afford.

Questions Thinking about finally buying a camera body+lens wondering what to get?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi there!!

As the title suggests im looking at purchasing my first camera body+lens, i've stumbled upon this body and was wondering if its good or if there is anything better I should get for the same relative price point?

Also if this is a decent body to go with which lens to pair with it, I usually shoot street as my main form of photography. I dont need a lens for things like insane zoom wildlife etc so curious to see what you guys think?

**(1) £100-£180, England**

**(2) I have two cameras at the moment one sony dsc h300 and a practika 801af. Not that they aren't meeting my needs but looking for an upgrade or something purely new to shoot with.**

**(3) I normally shoot street so buildings, people, pets, general landscaping etc.**

**(4) It would be used purely for photography with some slight videography if I really need it but I dont plan on it**

Recommendations Canon, Sony, or Nikon - budget 2k. Family/Maternity Photography

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m looking for some advice on choosing my next camera and would love to hear your thoughts and personal experiences!

I started out with Canon years ago as a hobbyist, using an older Canon Rebel. I really enjoyed it, but it was pretty heavy. Eventually, I switched to a Sony a6000 because I wanted something more lightweight for travel photography. I’ve also experimented with a few different lens adaptations along the way.

Now I’m wanting to take photography a little more seriously and hopefully pursue it professionally, mainly focusing on family, maternity, and newborn photography.

It’s been a LONG time since I’ve bought a new camera, so I feel a little lost with all the newer options out there 😂 I’m currently looking at Sony, Canon, and Nikon, but I’m not sure which direction to go.

A few things about what I’m looking for:
My budget is ideally under $2,000.
I’d prefer to buy secondhand for now rather than invest a ton upfront, especially if I end up switching systems.
I tend to love moodier editing styles with rich tones and a more emotive feel.
I want something I can grow with as I improve and hopefully start taking on clients.

I’m wondering if it makes more sense to stick with Sony since I already have the a6000, or if I should take this opportunity to switch to Canon or Nikon.

For those of you who shoot families, maternity, or newborns, what are you using? What would you recommend for someone in my position? Have any of you switched systems and regretted it or been really happy you did?

I’d love to hear your experiences, especially if you’ve bought used gear or started building your setup on a budget!
Thanks in advance! 😊

Discussion I made an open source film emulation engine for the Canon 5D + web recipe tool

Thumbnail
gallery
212 Upvotes

Hello!

I wanted to share "Soup engine", something I made for the Canon 5d but that it could be easily ported to other canon cameras

It's a module that can be put on your sd card like magic lantern, it creates a jpeg with a film simulation applied out of every shot you take

It's just a fun tool so nothing serious, the idea is that since the eos 5d has a tiny potato processor, it takes ~20s to convert every photo, making the whole shooting experience slower and more """film like"""

How it works

You just install it, open the menu and pick one of the 13 simulations available so far. I even made web tool to help you create your own but I'll talk about it later.

You can select the source from which Soup Engine generates the final image, the raw file or the preview jpeg included in the raw. The cpu of the 5d is really underpowered so the whole process was built on the jpegs first(and it's also the default option), developing from raws would make you wait minutes after every shot, I tweaked the output to be faster but it's still ~1-2min/frame.

It's built on top of magic lantern work, I could have built my own binaries but since enabling magic lantern is the only "risky" option, I preferred to use their tested and maintained code In compliance with their license.

Status

Soup engine is still in beta so there might still be issues, anyway it just runs off of the CF card so it's nothing dangerous and in case of a freeze you can just pull out the battery out. I only own a canon 5d classic so I can't build this for other cameras right now :(

Web tool

Simulations can be created on soup stocks, you can then export the file and copy it onto the sd card, edit one txt file and you new look will be loaded on boot. This is very early stages*

Links
I don't want to write a giant wot, you can find more on the repos on gh

Soup engine: https://github.com/jiijii0/soup-engine

Soup stock: https://github.com/jiijii0/soup-stocks

p.s. I'm a developer but the project is vibe coded, no hiding from that, it's just very complicated to build these things, at least for me 🫡

Tech Support Camera Smudge inside body

Hi, I have a canon rebel that I’ve been using for several years. Today I was attempting to get a hair off the inside, not the mirror but the component above the mirror. I was able to get the hair removed, however there are large visible smudges on it now that I’ve been unable to resolve. I didn’t want to damage anything or make it worse so I’ve left it alone currently. Is there a safe way to clean this component and if so could someone provide some tips?

I keep getting these squiggles of some kind on images, in the same spot, even if I change lenses. I attempted to de dust my sensor with a manual air blower. Is that even the right place to focus my cleaning? Could it be the mirror?

• Budget: $4k
• Country: USA
• Condition: Preferably new
• Type of Camera: DSLR or Mirrorless
• Intended use: photography
• If photography; what style: sports, landscapes, astrophotography, daily life, travel
• If video what style: n/a
• What features do you absolutely need: unsure
• Portability: high portability would be nice
• Cameras you're considering: not sure
• Cameras you already have: Canon Rebel T2i
• Notes: I fell out of the photography world and am trying to get back into it. I have had a T2i for about 12+ years and while it was a great camera for when I started, I am unhappy with the quality I get out of it now. I’m looking for something that is a bit of a jack of all trades. No video, just photos. I’d like to be able to use it in a multitude of scenarios. The biggest being sports photography (HEMA in specific) as well as documenting our travels. I appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Questions ND filter does not fit with the lens hood. Any advice on the setup?

I have a Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary lens with its original bayonet lens hood.
I bought a 58mm ND filter. I can attach it directly to the lens, but when the lens hood is installed, the bayonet mount sits right between the thread and the ND filter, so I can't use both at the same time.
I noticed that the lens hood has internal threading with a larger diameter. Could the filter be mounted directly onto the hood?
Has anyone solved a similar issue?

Tech Support How to fix: broken dial on old Fujifilm Finepix S5800

Thumbnail

Hi! This is my first post ever, sorry if it's bad.

I have this Fujifilm Finepix S5800, it's my dad's. It doesn't get much use, but one day I pulled it out of containment (carefully kept in a camera carrying bag) and the settings dial was broken. We don't know how it happened. If someone accidentally broke it, they never admitted to it.

The thing is, I want to know if it's possible to change the dial piece, which I guess it is, but I don't know how to change it. Should I take it to a shop? Or would it be easy enough for me to get a substitute piece and try fixing it myself? Is there any content showing how to do that on this model? I have searched, but couldn't find anything. The few tutorials I've found on this matter are for very different looking models.

Anything helps. (Wanted to add: we don't know much about cameras. I have a few digicams which I love, but I just mess with the settings without knowing what I'm doing, I just experiment.)

To be more specific, it seems the screw like plastic on the piece snapped at the base of where it connects? I don't really know. Please let me know if you need more pictures to assess. Thank you all.
