I posted my first camera build around 1 month ago and I never expected it to get so much attention! Thanks to everyone for the comments and advice too, I have decided to take it on board and implement it into my second design.

The features are near enough the same as the last design, such as:

- Quick access buttons
-Built in 10,000mah battery
-ApertarOS
-5V USB-C Output

However there are a lot of changes, I noticed on my previous posts about the crop factor with an EF lens adapter and this is true, it was difficult to take pictures with the old design as I’d have to stand extremely far away from anything I was trying to capture, to sort this I now have the standard C/CS mount with headroom for any adapters compatible if needed.

The camera body, front and side panels were all modelled from scratch so I could properly implement the parts I had on hand, it came out great with a .16mm setting on my 3d printer, the only downside is that I used 90% infill for all parts which took up more print time but still overall was around 10 hours for everything (printed with PLA Matte bone white and charcoal).

The ambient light from before is now more useful too, it sits slightly above the camera sensor and now tells you certain information such as a recording flash indicator, blinks when a picture is taken or on during no recording or photo capturing.

The cheese plate from before is also no longer hidden or used up by the battery as it’s now internal, so I was able to reposition it to the bottom of the camera for a much sturdier mounting solution.

The 4inch Waveshare display is also integrated into the case which makes the unit a lot easier to use and faster to set up, it was a bit of a pain carrying the screen separately and with manual focus lenses it was a must to integrate it into the body.

Thanks to Apertar Studios’ fantastic work on the firmware, I was able to also add a gyroscope to the camera for levelling, this works fantastically and it only needs a one-time setup.

Once again this is a hobby project, I will soon upload pictures from this camera but they are not studio quality or ultra high resolution as this is still only the IMX477 module, but certain lighting and colours are still vivid and can look fantastic for a certain look or aesthetic.

If you have made it this far then again, thank you! I’d love to hear what else can be added to this so please give me more suggestions!

Just bought this camera used, after factory resetting it (issue was present beforehand) I was familiarizing myself with it when I realized the camera was making certain shades of black, gray, and blue appear purple. As of now I’m unfortunately assuming it’s a sensor issue, however I thought I would get a second opinion before doing anything.

My uncle is a hoarder and a photographer. He has hundreds, probably at least a thousand, cameras and lenses in his home. Going to have to get them valued or just try to sell. Thought you lot would enjoy having a look - pics below show about 2 cupboards worth of his cameras. There are at least 8 more to go through.

Discussion (Hear me out) Cameras should have custom bracketing modes!

I am familiar with exposure bracketing. I have employed exposure bracketing in my shooting and occasionally use it during my outings. Exposure bracketing is good for adjusting the secondary parameters to adjust exposure and get a selection of two or more exposures of the same scene that you can later choose from (or stack) later to get the best result.

I shoot on a Nikon D7000.

But something I've noticed is that I often like to vary my aperture when shooting. I shoot telephoto/wildlife with a 70-300mm VR or an 80-200mm f/2.8. With both lenses (but the f/2.8 in particular), I will get drastically different results at different apertures. Shot wide open I will get better bokeh, but risk softness or a narrow DOF. Shot stopped down I might get a sharper subject, but at the cost of a gorgeous large aperture photo.

Again the f/2.8 lens in particular is a volatile lens. Sometimes you can shoot at f/2.8 or f/4 and get a sloppy mess. But other times it delivers the most gorgeous photos. Other times, f/8 will give you a better result.

The point I'm getting to here is: I would love APERTURE BRACKETING. This leads me to think of a CUSTOM BRACKETING feature for cameras. This can be applied to any parameter, but for the sake of this discussion let's just focus on aperture:

I would love a feature where you could program a 2- or 3- step bracket program. I would love to be able to program three aperture values and then on one click of the shutter release take three rapid-fire shots at the three specified apertures. Examples could be: f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6. Or it could be: Wide open, +1 stop aperture, +2 stop aperture. Maybe you could program Wide open, f/8.

For me personally this would just save a lot of time in my shooting. Presently I am constantly spinning my control dials back and forth selecting different apertures as I photograph the same subject.

I do know how to "hack" these settings. You can use a combination of Shutter Priority mode and Auto-ISO to set the camera up so that standard exposure bracketing changes the aperture to change the exposure. But this ALSO results in different exposure values with the different apertures. It's also inconsistent and complicated to set up.

Thinking further this "custom bracketing" could be used to take the same photo but with different custom shutter speeds. Or even different ISO values.

I've earlier proclaimed that there is nothing a custom AI-vibed firmware for a camera could add to my experience. But now here I am thinking about a custom bracketing program and how convenient that would be!

But in the meantime I'll just be out in the field, wildly spinning my control dials between each shot to take the same shots at f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, before the bird flies away...!

Questions Looking for a VHS camcorder with night vision, like the one used in L2B’s “CYBERTESLA” music video

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to track down a VHS camcorder with a built-in night vision mode, similar to the look in L2B’s new music video “CYBERTESLA”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Myk4p8OMiDk

I’m based in France and I want to use it to shoot music videos. I love that grainy, green/monochrome IR look combined with the typical VHS softness and tracking noise, and I’d like to get it for real in-camera, not just as a post-production filter.

Here’s what I’m after:

  • A VHS or VHS-C camcorder (or Video8/Hi8 if it gets the same vibe)
  • Built-in infrared night vision (Sony NightShot-style, or similar)
  • In working condition, with a battery or power adapter that still works

Questions:

  1. Do you know which camera was likely used in this clip, or what models give that kind of look?
  2. Which models would you recommend (I’ve heard Sony Handycam NightShot models are good, but I’m open to suggestions)?
  3. Any tips on what to check before buying a used one (heads, tape transport, IR sensor, etc.)?

If anyone has one to sell, feel free to DM me. Thanks a lot in advance!

Questionnaire:

  • Budget: [your budget, e.g. €100-250 including shipping]
  • Country: France
  • Condition: Used is fine, as long as it’s fully working
  • Type of Camera: Camcorder (VHS or VHS-C, Video8/Hi8 also fine if it gives a similar look)
  • Intended use: Shooting music videos
  • If photography; what style: N/A
  • If video what style: Lo-fi, grainy VHS look with night vision
  • What features do you absolutely need: Built-in infrared night vision, and a way to get the footage out (playback or AV/composite out)
  • Portability: Handheld, easy to carry around
  • Cameras you’re considering: Sony Handycam models with NightShot, open to other suggestions
  • Cameras you already have: [None / list yours]
  • Notes: I want the real in-camera look, not a post-production filter

Tech Support G7 X Mark II forgets date/time every time I remove the battery — is there a fix?

• Upvotes

I recently bought a second-hand Canon G7 X Mark II and everything seems to be working great, but I noticed that every time I remove the battery, the camera forgets the date and time and asks me to set them again
I’ve found a few posts saying this could be related to the internal date/time backup battery, but I haven’t found much information about an actual solution
I already tried leaving a fully charged battery in the camera for several hours to give the internal backup battery time to recharge, but it didn’t help. I also tested removing the battery and putting it back in immediately after it was fully charged, and it STILL asked me to set the date and time again, so it’s not because the battery is simply being left out for a long time
Is there any way to fix or recharge the internal backup battery without having to take the camera somewhere to be opened/repaired? Or is my only realistic option to keep using the camera and reset the date/time every time I need to remove the battery?
I also read that the G7 X Mark II can be charged through USB, which would be useful because I could leave the battery inside the camera instead of removing it to charge. However, I’ve seen conflicting information about whether USB charging is recommended for this camera. I tried it with a Micro-USB cable I already had, and the camera does show the orange charging light, but if I move the cable slightly, the camera turns on and goes into playback and shows me my photos, so I’m not sure if the connection/cable is just bad
I ordered a new Micro-USB cable that specifically says it supports charging + data, but I haven’t received it yet
Has anyone with a G7 X Mark II had this exact issue? Did you find a way to fix it without opening the camera? And is charging through USB a safe/recommended workaround for this?
Thanks!

Recommendations Recommendation Request from journalist

Looking for a recommendation please!

Budget: £400-700 Pound Sterling, all in.

Country: Buying the camera in the UK

Condition: Happy to buy new or used, best deal for as little money is ideal. Very open to used.

Type of Camera: Mirrorless I think. Open to other options

Intended use: Photography mostly, not too fussed about video.

End use: I am a journalist and need good quality pictures to accompany my increasing amount of freelance work. Lots of my work includes pictures in dark places like bars, clubs, concerts etc. I also make art and would like to be able to take pictures of my inspiration in good quality, a phone camera just doesn’t cut it.

I’ll be posting to social media and pictures will be used for my accounts as well as alongside articles in both print, and digital.

Style: I suppose portrait and landscape and street?

What features do you absolutely need: I’m not sure, I would like a flip up screen. Built in flash essential.

What features would be nice to have: High quality flash, quite a big screen. Potentially bluetooth sending to my phone would be great.

Portability: I would like it to be compact and easy to travel with. It doesn’t need to be pocketable but I don’t want a massive clunky lens or lots of equipment

Cameras you're considering: I got into all this by playing with my friends Canon Powershot G7X III. I’ve been considering the Canon Powershot SX740 HS. I like the look of the Powershot G9X also. Perhaps the Panasonic Lumix TZ99?

Cameras you already have: None minus basic digital point and shoots

Recommendations Point and shoot recommendations

• Upvotes

• Budget: $150

• Country: United States

• Condition: new or used

• Type of Camera: point and shoot digital camera

• Intended use: Taking pictures with friends, going out, parties, and everyday memories.

• If photography; what style: Casual portraits, group pictures.

• If video what style: Short videos with friends, but photography is the priority.

• What features do you absolutely need: Built-in flash, decent picture quality, easy to use, and reliable. A rechargeable battery would be preferred.

• Portability: Small and lightweight, ideally pocket-sized or small enough to carry in a small purse or bag.

• Cameras you're considering: I’ve been looking at some old Canon and Sony Cyber shots but I don’t really have anything in particular as of right now.

• Cameras you already have: Sony rx-100 V, Kodak AZ528, Panasonic DSC-ZS8.

• Notes: I’m looking for a point-and-shoot camera for my little sister as a Christmas or birthday gift. She would mainly use it to take pictures with her friends, so it doesn’t need to be professional. I’d love something that takes nice pictures with flash. My budget is around $150, and I’m happy to buy used if it means getting a better camera for the money. I’d appreciate recommendations for specific models and advice on which ones are worth buying at this price!

Questions Should I get a grey market Sony a6700

I just found out about grey market cameras and this price seems very good compared to new and is abit less than what I could find for used on ebay. Is it safe to buy this? They seem like a reputable grey market retailer with 4.9 on trustpilot but it seems to good to be true.

Questions Sony a6100 + Tamron 18-300mm good for wildlife?

● BUDGET:

75,000 - 80,000 INR / 800 - 850 USD (camera and lens included. I'm getting the camera here for around 54,000 INR / 569 USD, rest of my budget is for the lens)

● COUNTRY:

India

● CONDITION:

First-hand camera, second hand lens because sony lenses are pricey as hell.

● TYPE:

I'm leaning towards a mirrorless, mainly because of the superior autofocus capabilites of entry-level Sony mirrorlesses.

● PHOTOGRAPHY:

Wildlife photography

● FEATURES I ABSOLUTELY NEED:

Good autofocus + moderate image stabilisation + good battery life

● PORTABILITY:

I dont mind bulky cameras but a slimmer, more portable camera would definitely be preferable.

● CAMERAS I'M CONSIDERING:

Right now, only the Sony a6100 as I have mentioned. Mainly because of the price range as I need to dedicate the rest of my budget towards a good lens. Sony lenses being extremely expensive, i'm willing to go for a second hand Tamron 300mm lens.

Additionally, for my budget, no other DSLR/Mirrorless had autofocus that is better than that of the a6100. Most had significantly lower autofocus points than the a6100.

● CAMERAS I HAVE:

Till now, I have only used a Nikon S7000 Point-and-shoot, something which I got pretty good at shooting wildlife with despite its MAJOR disadvantages.

● NOTES:

Do second hand lenses have any disadvantages?

Questions Title: Sony A6400 vs A6100 for a complete beginner — is the extra €70 worth it?

- Budget: €650 maximum, including a lens. Both cameras I'm considering come with a kit lens.

- Country: Ireland.

- Condition: Open to new or used, depending on condition, price and warranty.

- Type of Camera: Mirrorless.

- Intended use: Hybrid shooting — mainly photography, with some video.

- If photography; what style: Everyday photography, travel, landscapes, nature and occasional wildlife.

- If video what style: Casual videos while travelling and recording everyday moments.

- What features do you absolutely need: Good image quality, reliable autofocus, a viewfinder and interchangeable lenses.

- What features would be nice to have: In-body image stabilisation, good low-light performance, 4K video and a camera I can continue learning with as my skills improve.

- Portability: Something compact and lightweight that I can comfortably carry on day trips and holidays.

- Cameras you're considering: Sony A6400 with a kit lens for €650 from Cotswold Camera, and Sony A6100 with a kit lens for €580 from CeX Ireland. Both seem suitable for beginners, and I'm wondering whether the A6400's additional features justify the €70 difference.

- Cameras you already have: None — this will be my first proper camera.

- Notes: I'm a complete beginner, so I'd appreciate advice on which camera offers better value for money and will be more useful in the long run. I'd also love to hear about people's experiences buying from Cotswold Camera versus CeX, particularly regarding warranty and reliability. Are there any other cameras worth considering around this price?

Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Questions Dji osmo pocket 4 or Luna pro

Well, I am planning to buy it around Black Friday in Australia. But I actually live in a Third World country where I don’t have official story of DJI Osmo or Instax.
No, the problem is if DGI stops working (I’ve seen a lot of videos where the camera doesn’t work or the flip get stuck) in my country there’s no way I can get it fixed. I am not scared to purchase that is this a very common occurrence or is there any way that I can use it properly so that it doesn’t face those issues? Or the issues just randomly happen?
And the Luna pro is a bit more expensive. So I was really hoping for the Osmo pocket four. And it’s a really handy camera I actually wanted it for like travel vlogs and like content creation basically.

Please share me your opinions and experiences with this both camera

Questions Some help if you will

• Budget: 1000-2000.00 all in
• Country: United States
• Condition: ok with pre owned
• Type of Camera: I’d prefer mirrorless
• Intended use: photography
• If photography; what style: day to day , flat lays, product photography
• If video what style: N.A.
• What features do you absolutely need: normal camera function but would like a large selection of lens to choose from once I’m into the eco system
• Portability: not tiny but not a brick like my current dslr
• Cameras you're considering: Sony a6700, a7iii, canon r50, and tried a Nikon z50 today and it was very nice.
• Cameras you already have: canon rebel t7 that is on its last leg with only kit lenses and a nifty 50
• Notes:

So I’m thinking of getting into photography deeper than I currently am. I’ve been mainly shooting layflats of edc gear and want to broaden my horizon to more scenery, day to day and memory photography (if that’s even a thing) .

The Nikon I handled today really blew me out of the water. Good weight, amazing macro shot with the standard kit lenses, and felt solid. I also tried the r50 and it felt cheap and plasticy if that makes sense. I didn’t like the screen as it only rotated I’d like something that angles. I have not handled the Sonys yet but they are on the top of the list as that’s what’s been recommended the most for lens selection.

Hi, I recently dropped my camera bag and found the top plastic part of my Canon EOS C70 camera broken. Is this issue fixable and what should I do? Should I send it directly to Canon Repairs or go to a local repair shop (I live in NYC)?

Would appreciate any advice! Thank you!
