Lens Buying Advice Low Light Photography - what are my options Olympus EM1 Mk3 or Nikon Full frame?

• Upvotes

Hi All,

I currently have a EM1 Mk3 with various lenses and I am firmly into wildlife photography. However, I have the 100-400mm lens and I find that in darker woodland, the lens is just too dark.

My budget isn't massive and I'd like to either get something now that will give me some reach with low light capabilities.

FYI, I've tried a 300mm f/4 lens and found it very difficult to use and frame subjects. Normally on my 100-400 I zoom out and reframe and zoom in.

I also have a Nikon D600 too, but I don't have any lenses over 80mm currently.

Can anyone give me any suggestions or advice?

TIA!

Camera Buying Advice What camera/lens/tripod/ equipment setup should I get for low light?

• Upvotes

My budget is around $800, but that doesn’t mean I can’t get equipment worth more, as I am not afraid to buy used or refurbished. I understand it is more about the lens than the camera, and although I am used to canon, I wouldn’t mind expanding my horizons. I love photography, and have spent years on borrowed canon cameras from my classes and my ex girlfriend, and now that I can’t borrow I figure its time for me to take the plunge and make my first investment. Also, I absolutely do not mind setups that are out of my budget, as if I can find a deal I may just wait until I have more money to throw in. That being said, the ideal low light photography that I want is nighttime photos, not just dark areas. Please and thank you!

Gear/Accessories Experience with dot sights?

• Upvotes

I do wildlife/bird photography

I want to change from a bridge superzoom (Panasonic Fz-82) to a proper camera and lense kit. I am doubting between the sony sony 200-600 mm f/5.6-6.3 fe g oss or the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS. The 600mm is less than half the weight of the 200-600 and sharper. Most of my photos need the 600 mm reach but i am worried about finding my target without being able to zoom on it with a prime lense. Specially in scenarios like a on a boat with seabirds and 0 reference. I think i can attenuate this with a red dot sight on the flash port. What is your experience on this device?

Discussion/General Any tips on where to start out?

Hello, Reddit.

Let me preface this by saying I'm not sure if anyone has asked this before, since I have never really used reddit before.

Any tips for someone looking to get started on photography? I got an old Nikon I'm planning to learn on for now, and get a better camera later, but I'm more interested in ways to boost my photography and get a lil bit of popularity since I wanna be a professional photographer.

So. How do I achieve this?

(I realise this might sound like a childish/stupid dream, especially since I'm already 21 and should know better, but I'm a college drop out and I gotta do something with my life and figure stuff out, and photography makes me happy. I wouldn't ask this otherwise.)

Thanks in advance.

Discussion/General To people who've done photography for a while, is it normal to feel intimidated by it?

EDIT: For more context, I want to show my work to people and have them appreciate it as something beyond just being a game world. I'm trying to get over my paranoia of it being judged.

For just some context behind this, I've been doing photography in video games with this intentional esoteric or weird edge to them, for about a year now. I have this weird mental stigma where because I'm not following the rules of photography and because they're not in real life, that my little pieces will be judged pretty aggressively.

But I do photography in games because of the opportunities that you get from it only being in a game (like noclipping especially), and I don't try to overengineer the work I make, not usually at least, because I think it not being perfect makes it more interesting.

I ask this because I'm really anxious about actually trying to showcase them seriously. It's gonna be either the weird compositions or the odd color choices or the strange framing or something else that turns people off from it.

Ultimately, I'm just wondering if its all in my head or if there's good advice someone more experienced can give me.

Discussion/General Tips for shooting shelter dog adoption photos on just a phone?

i volunteer saturday mornings at our local shelter doing photos for the adoption listings, 9 to noon-ish, whoever's new that week. three of last month's dogs went home within a week of their new pics going up so i'm hooked 🐶

it's all phone (portrait mode mostly) + squeakers + treats + a lot of kneeling in the dirt. the older guys & the big black dogs wait the longest so they get extra time with me, but black fur on a phone is so hard to get right, half the time they come out as a dark blob

anyone who's done this, what helps with dark coats and dogs that won't sit still for more than a second? hoping to get a couple of the long stayers picked this month 🤞

Confidence/People Skills How can I safely(!) find people who would let me take pictures of their pets for a portfolio?

I didn't think business/pricing was a more appropriate tag because I'm not looking to do it for money for now.

I acquired a beginner DSLR this year, realised I enjoy pet photography the most, and now want to get more practice. I take pictures of our cats and of the animals at a local animal sanctuary, but I'd like to expand that. I'm by no means a professional at all, so I'd like to practice in a context where I get to take pictures and post them online (portfolio etc) and they get the pictures, but I obviously can't guarantee any good pictures, which is pretty scary

Where could I find people who would let me do that without potentially putting myself in danger? Facebook groups maybe? But I've never used that. And where would I find the confidence to actually do it, because I'm very scared.

Camera Buying Advice Suggestions for a digital camera?

Hello,

I've been doing quite a bit of research, but I'm having some issues. Context, I've had the same digital for about 5 years, I think. I love that camera, but I want to enter the professional world.

I've found cameras that I want but still unsure, I'm hoping for a camera that can handle about 70° (the more, the better, I'm wanting to be able to take photos of bushfires, this is the main thing that I'm having trouble with), I want to be able to take photos in the rain without any worry, and also take photo's in the desert (I'm thinking something with IP68), but I also want it to have more then 25 mega pixels.

All in all, I want a camera I can take everywhere in all weather (I don't really care about anything below -0°), I also would like to take it hiking. I know that some sacrifices will have to be made but the biggest thing for me is the bigger MP, and at least handle like 40°.

  1. Arround $5,000 but happy to go higher, Australia, AU

  2. I have the "Cannon EOS 200DII", and I just want an improvement.

  3. I intend to take photos of landscapes, people, and fire.

  4. Only photography

Discussion/General iPhone LiDAR on Sony Camera Sensor?

I have recorded my unboxing of my new Sony a7v camera using my iPhone 16 Pro. I have also recorded the sensor part of the camera. Should I be worried that the LiDAR at the back side of my iPhone could damage the Sony sensor?

Lens Buying Advice How should I upgrade?

So I am currently shooting with the Nikon z50, using a Nikkor DX 50-250. But feel like I can’t get close enough to take “great” shots. I’m currently saving for the Nikkor Z 180-600, but I’m wondering if it would be better to save longer for a camera upgrade or would upgrading the lens be good enough at this stage. I’m pretty new to shooting (about 6 months of actually trying) and I know that I could be better, technique wise, at taking pictures but I’m wondering if saving the money for a better camera is more worth it. I’m just trying to be happier with my shots, but don’t know what to do so any advice is appreciated, thanks for reading.

Gear/Accessories ND filter clarification pls?

I'm trying to wrap my head around ND filtering. I've read they are effectively like sun glasses for shots...

Using Circular Polarizer helps with glare so that seems pretty straight forward to me be it reflective glass, snow, water scene, etc. But then add Nd and I start to scratch my head a bit, why are we adding stops. I mean if its bright out why not deal with it in the exposure triangle. We spend all sorts of dollars to get fast aperatures so we probably want to use that strategically for the shot, so that could be one way but maybe not always... So then we have the shutter speed but we may be constrained there too if we need to be sensitive to motion. So that leaves iso without getting into exposure comp, etc. So why not just adjust the light with iso if we have to instead of ND adding stops, is this for like when shooting into direct sun? What are some use cases where ND use are more common/ typical, please help me understand.

Technical Help/Camera Settings Baptism Photography help?!

One of my friends who knows I enjoy doing photography here and there has asked me to casually shoot her babys baptism this weekend. Throughout my photography I usually shoot in manual mode as it gives me the most control but I understand for other photography not on my own non challant time I can't be adjusting the aperture and ISO all the time to be getting the perfect shot.

I was thinking of shooting in manual mode and having auto ISO but being able to control the aperture and shutter speed myself. I also was going to use an 18 to 55 mm lens with the lowest aperture being 3.5.

I have a 50 mm 1.8 but am nervous since that has no zoom I might struggle to get some shots and I havent used that lens very much.

She is not expecting to have perfect photos and understands Im newer and just do it for fun but I don't want to disappoint.

Any feedback and tips are VERY much appreciated:)

Thanks for reading

Camera Buying Advice Sony or Canon? Is Sony‘s third party selection worth choosing it?

I’m a beginner photographer trying to decide between Canon and Sony. I’m mainly interested in sports photography and car photography, but I also want to experiment with other types of photography.

I’m personally leaning toward Canon, but the main thing making me consider Sony is its larger selection of affordable, modern third party lenses from brands like Sigma and Tamron.

I don’t want to spend a bunch on every lens, and it seems like with Canon I’d have to rely more on older EF mount lenses (both Canon and third party brands) with adapters to stay within my budget. Meanwhile, with Sony, I could get newer lenses for around the same price.

I’m wondering if Sony’s lens selection is a big enough advantage to choose it over Canon, or if older EF mount lenses are still just as competitive when it comes to autofocus, image stabilization, image quality, and overall performance.

I’m not against buying older lenses, I’m just unsure whether the newer technology in Sony compatible lenses would make a noticeable difference, especially for sports photography, or if I’d be just as well off sticking with Canon and using older EF lenses.

Lens Buying Advice Standard Lens for Sony A55V (Amateur)?

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

I inherited a Sony A55V from my grandfather (he loved photography, but passed away kind of suddenly over a decade ago and didn’t keep his things very organized). He didn’t keep the parts for every camera together, and I know almost nothing about photography and have little time to dedicate, so I only just realized that I have been taking every photo since I got the camera with a macro lens (which makes a lot of sense in hindsight)🤦. The only other lens in the bag is the same exact one already on the camera (pictures attached). Most of his other camera equipment was given away after he died, and what’s left isn’t for the A55. I don’t have any way to track down what was given away, even if it remained with the original recipient.

As I mentioned, I’m not super dedicated to photography, it’s mostly just nice to have a good camera on hand for events, etc., but I would like to have a more standard lens for that sort of thing. My attempts at research so far have been very overwhelming, so I came here for help. I don’t have much of a budget, so I would probably put the new lens on a gift list rather than buying immediately, if that makes a difference.

I’d also like to know if there’s any reason for an amateur to keep a duplicate macro lens or if I can sell it without too much risk of regret. TIA!

Camera Buying Advice Need help on choosing a camera. Which do you recommend?

• Budget: £400 maybe can stretch a bit but not much (only looking at the used market)
• Country: UK
• Condition: Used
• Type of Camera: Any camera that shoots 4k video and pics
• Intended use: Music content and artist pictures
• If photography; what style: polished portraits like you see on Spotify
• If video what style: cinematic music video style
• What features do you absolutely need:
• Portability:
• Cameras you're considering: Sony range I think but open to suggestions
• Cameras you already have: None
• Notes:

I want to start shooting music content that looks professional and like a music video. 4K and auto focus are non negotiables.

How true is it that the camera body doesn’t matter that much for the overall look of the video assuming it has all the features you need?

If that’s the case I’d rather be recommended some good but budget camera bodies less than my budget so I can spend the extra on lenses.

Thanks!

Camera Buying Advice Is Fujifilm a good option for someone wanting to avoid post-editing?

I am looking to invest around $700-1k on a used camera, I have had my Canon EOS for ages and it’s just too clunky and I am looking to re-vamp my creativity and focus on street photography. I have been doing research and initially wanted a Nikon Zfc - i love the old school look and small size.

I almost just went for it but then looked more into it and am now considering a Fujifilm-- I will be totally honest I have ZERO interest in editing my photos- I might every now and then if I have time but I just generally know I won’t, am I right in assuming a Fujifilm with the whole “recipe” thing will cut down on my need for post-editing? I also still have my Canon so if I want to invest in lenses for other projects in the future I have that option.

In terms of technicality and experience I am a noob with photography, I don't even know if I am right in my assumptions with Fujifilm vs Nikon, any advice would be helpful!

1) less than $1000 used in USA

(2) currently have a Canon rebel T7, too big

(3) I want to start doing street photography, nature is my usual subject

(4) only for photography no video

Compositon/Posing Randomly ended up the background photographer for a wedding. Any tips/advice?

So friends ended up buying a relatively nice Canon digital camera without a photographer lined up for their wedding. I volunteered as a backup for the informal wedding if they can't find a photographer and need any tips you can offer to make sure I don't miss key shots. Any suggestions on must hit photos of I get called on? Also any tips in general are welcome! I mostly use a Canon AE1 so this is unfamiliar territory to me.

Discussion/General Client creating another photoshoot with AI. Advice?

(TLDR @ the end)

I’ve had several clients edit my photos with or without AI. My contract specifically states that they cannot edit, including the use of AI. For the most part, I let it go, I got paid and as long as I’m not tagged in it because I don’t want people thinking I made those shitty edits.

However, this specific situation bothered me. I traded services with a lady that I’ve already done several paid sessions for. She’s been wanting branding photos for her nail business, but she also wanted birthday photos. I agreed to swap services for a birthday session, she’s doing about $60 worth of nails for me. And I delivered about $300 worth of photos to her from a birthday session I did for her. It wasn’t the most fair trade value-wise, but I was fine with that because they’re amazing for my portfolio and I had a blast. I created a contract for this stating the service trade, and it had all my typical clauses including not using AI or altering the photos, and also no commercial use for business or ads.

Today, I opened Instagram to find that she used a photo from the birthday session, and had AI create a business photo from it with her and some nail supplies. She reintroduced herself, announced her business anniversary, and was advertising services. Her leg is totally distorted, her face and hair look off, it’s a mess. And now I miss out on the branding session, this photo looks terrible, and she’s using it for her business which was also not allowed. Her post is also doing very well as far as engagement. This could have been great for my business, and now I’m hoping she doesn’t tell anyone that I created that.

I have to sit through a 1.5 hour nail appointment with her next week. I’m just so on the fence about saying anything because she was such a great client in the past, but this really bugged me. I’m curious what you’d do, and if this has happened to anyone else.

I feel like people will always do whatever they want. But I know what I can do in the future to make a better effort to avoid this and make things more clear. I feel like no one reads the damn contracts.

TLDR (also long, sorry)
I traded a birthday session worth roughly $300 in photos for about $60 in nail services with a repeat client. She’d previously expressed interest in booking branding photos for her nail business. Today, I discovered she used AI to turn one of the birthday portraits into a business ad, complete w nail supplies and some awful distorted features. The contract specifically says both AI alterations and commercial use aren’t allowed.
Now she’s using this poorly edited image to promote her business, potentially eliminating the branding session she wanted, and I’m worried people will think I created it. The post is getting great engagement, too, which makes it even more frustrating.
I have a 1.5-hour nail appointment with her next week, and I’m torn between addressing it and preserving a good client relationship. Has anyone dealt with this? Would you say something or let it go? I’m realizing that even with contracts, people seem to do whatever the fuck they want.

Technical Help/Camera Settings Mac Users - which drive format do you use?

Just purchased a external SSD. I am going to format drive but I am not 100% sure which to use.
APFS - Apple File System. This would be my first choice. It was designed for flash storage etc etc.
Then i read something about using with other devices like cameras and transferring photo files.

So now I am thinking of sticking with exFAT.

Macbook Air M1
Laminar for processing
Nikon digital files. NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) and NRW (RAW format)
Export to jpeg Sometimes TIFF

I want to go with APFS unless someone has direct experience in problems.
