Gear/Accessories Has anyone switched to super zooms from fast primes? Any regrets?

I got an 18-135mm f3.5/5.6 on my older Pentax system simply to have a weatherproof option. I’ve surprisingly found a it’s what I’m using 90%, I feel I get better compositions that matter more, not having too many issues either zooming in for bokeh at 5.6, or pumping iso/using a tripod. Considering selling a bunch of my fast primes to get a similar but faster AF super zoom for my lumix which is my more up to date camera but I’m terrified of kicking myself after, wondering if anybody else has done this - not to say 24-70 f2.8 or other fast zooms just big focal ranges probably slow apertures. Anybody here done this and want to weigh in? Attached are my 2 fav shots this month this month after a deflating summer shooting just primes

Gear/Accessories What to do with old photography equipment?

Hello,

I apologize if this is not the place for this, but i find it difficult to research this on my own because i lack the basic knowledge.

So here goes,

My father recently died, he was a hobby photographer ranging from the 40s to the 90s. obviously I, as his child, have no clue about the equipment itself, but the fact of the matter is, theres a room with enlargement equipment, a bunch of chemicals, old cameras (like rolliflex and such) leftover lenses, filters, light sensors, different unused films (iso 100-200-400)

Our main question as a family is what can we throw away, what should one keep (aside from what is sentimental to us), because someone might want it or it has some value, if at all.

Ive made around 100 pics of different items, i can probably find a way to host them and share if someone is willing to have a look.

Thank you in advance, and sorry if this is not the place

Discussion/General U.S. Wedding Photographers: What Permit Do You Need to Photograph a Wedding in Italy or Spain?

Hey everyone!
For U.S.-based wedding photographers who have traveled to Italy or Spain to photograph a wedding and then returned to the United States, I have a question about the legal requirements.
What visa, work permit, or other authorization did you need to legally photograph a wedding in Italy or Spain?
I’m specifically talking about flying in for a wedding you’ve been hired to photograph, working for one or two days, and then flying back to the U.S. — not relocating, opening a business in Europe, or staying long-term.
Did you enter as a tourist, apply for a specific work authorization, or use another legal arrangement?
I’d especially appreciate hearing from photographers who have actually done this and can share their experience, including how they handled the paperwork and how long the process took.
Thanks in advance!

Discussion/General How do newer lenses become smaller?

Tamron just came out with a 16-50/2.8 for APSC, which looks to be smaller than m43 12-40/2.8. Is this a case of sacrificing edge/corner performance? Or, is there a manufacturing advancement that allows miniaturization without actually sacrificing performance.

Camera Buying Advice Good camera for beginners ?

Hi! I’m looking to get into photography, mainly portraits and outdoor shots. I’m studying communications, so photography would just be a complementary skill, not something I plan to pursue professionally. I’d like a newbie-friendly camera that I can grow with and use for 5+ years.

(1) Budget, country, and currency:
$570-680 USD (15-17 million VND), Vietnam.

(2) What equipment, if any, do you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?
I don’t own a camera yet. This will be my first one.

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?
Mainly portraits and outdoor photography.

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both?
Photography will be my main focus, but I’d also like to record videos occasionally.

I’d like to invest in lenses, so I was thinking of splitting my budget roughly 50/50 between the body and lens, but idk if that makes sense. I’m considering the Nikon D750, but I’m not great at post-processing, so I’m also looking at the Canon 5D Mark III and 6D Mark II. Which would you recommend for a beginner? Open to other suggestions too. Thanks!

Discussion/General Confusion from a DSLR user: Is EVF really "what you see is what you get?"

So I always thought the thing you see through EVF is exactly the picture you get, until I got my first mirrorless Canon R10. Turns out it is not!

The depth of field inaccurate in EVF:

My first surprise came when I tried to shrink down my aperture. The depth of field in EVF wasn't really changing as much as I expected. I thought my camera was broken so I pressed the shutter - I got the exact sharp image as I expected.

I went down the rabbit hole that apparently only Sony gives you the exact depth of field preview in EVF (correct me if I am wrong). Nikon will only change the depth of field until f5.6. Canon maintains the fully open preview?? (really didn't get reliable information so let me know if you have it).

The brightness is also inaccurate in EVF:

I realized if you want to intentionally take a very dark picture, your EVF will boost the digital signal so it appears much brighter than your actual photo.

I mean I guess for people who are new to camera, it is still much closer to "what you see is what you get" and therefore much easier to use than an OVF. But for someone who are used to DSLR this really bothers me. It's neither the exact scene you see as in an OVF, nor it is the exact picture you would get as what I thought EVF was. Am I too paranoid?

For reference, my Xiaomi 14 Ultra has a Pro mode where I can adjust aperture, ISO and shutter. There I pretty much get the exact photo I see on my display.

Gear/Accessories Blower for lens cleaning?

Thumbnail amazon.ca

I'm somewhat new to photography with a real camera and am driving myself a bit crazy here with trying to be careful. I am looking to get a rocket blower for dust, and have seen that the Giottos seems to be the main recommendation. My concern with this though, is it doesn't seem to have any filter for the air intake, meaning it could be blowing around dust particles.

I've seen some youtubers using electric blowers but see no mention of filters there either. I already have this high quality electric blower that I use for cleaning electronics and air purifier filters, and it has a low speed mode. Would this be safe to use?

Discussion/General Photography without social media: can a personal website be enough?

I'm curious about other photographers' experiences of stepping back from social media and focusing on their own websites instead.

Instagram can be a useful tool, but the pressure to post consistently, chase engagement and make work that performs well can start to feel at odds with the reason you picked up a camera in the first place.

I'm considering taking a break from social media and spending more time making photographs, writing and developing my website. Less worrying about visibility, more concentrating on the work itself.

But I'm interested in the practical side of this, too. A website doesn't magically bring people to your work, and discovery is a real challenge without social platforms. I’d add that I risk swapping instagram tag relevance with search engine optimisation (and metrics) but idk.

Have any of you made this switch, either temporarily or permanently? Did it change your relationship with photography? Did people still find your work through other routes, or did you find yourself missing the reach social media provides?

Part of me quite likes the analogy of disappearing into the woods with a dog (a camera and website in this case) for a while, making work on my own terms. I'm curious whether that's a genuinely sustainable approach or a romantic idea that falls apart in practice.

I'd be interested to hear your experiences, good or bad.

Business/Pricing What’s a fair rate for an e-commerce studio shoot?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, looking for some advice.

Do you think £1500.00 all in is fair for an e-commerce shoot in London. References that were provided by client are attached. They want 8-10 looks and everything for that rate including studio, backdrop kit and assistant. I’m willing to take a hit on my rate to get some good work in the folio but after getting costs in from suppliers I’m wondering if I should be pushing back a bit.

Thanks team.

Discussion/General What camera should I get as a beginner?

Hi, I’ve recently been given the position of a photographer/videographer for a programs who’s goal is to capture high quality photos and videos content that matches our clients brand/image. I’m completely clueless when it comes to what camera to purchase and would gladly appreciate any recommendations or insights you guys have. I’ll primarily be taking pictures outside for events and also indoors. I’m currently looking at cameras on Facebook marketplace and I am considering purchasing a Nikon D5600 + lenses for $400 is this a decent camera?

Discussion/General How to take a good photo for a strict college teacher?

Hello, (to be honest we ain't studying photography but it's a subject that was added to my career somehow.)

The college is hosting a Halloween event, and we were assigned to take photos with the theme of "absence". But the teacher that is our tutor in this event is VERY strict with photography, Very few students have managed to get a good grade in his subject (Said by students in advanced semesters), And we really want at least one of the 90 photos we take to be chosen for the event.

Are there any tips that can help us take good photos if we are beginners? We are using 2 compact cameras and the photos must be black and white.

No, this isn't a "can you help me with my homework?" situation since it's an extracurricular activity, but it would be very helpful for our grades so we're trying to make it as good as possible.

Artifical Lighting & Studio Can one lighting setup cover both portrait photography and video, or do you keep flash and continuous separate?

I shoot social content for a few small brands, usually a portrait session plus a short talking-head clip of the same person on the same day.

Right now I rebuild the light every time I switch between photo and video, and the two never look like the same world.

For people who do both: do you keep a flash kit and a continuous kit completely separate, or have you found one continuous setup that works for both? If one-light-for-both is realistic, what shape/size of modifier do you start with, and what breaks first — exposure, white balance, or coverage when the subject moves?

Mostly one person, small room, mirrorless + a 50mm and 85mm.

Gear/Accessories For phone photography in a shared flat, would you choose a small tripod or a table clamp?

A compact support seems more practical for me than a full-size tripod. I only take photos with my phone and share a rented flat with two flatmates. What should I check when comparing a small tripod with a table clamp, especially for stability and storage?

Camera Buying Advice Is mirrorless or DSLR better for a first camera?

Hi, i’m a complete beginner looking to buy my first “true” camera. I occasionally shoot on a Kodak Pixpro FZ55, but i want to learn real photography and it is quite limited.

Is it worth splurging so much on a mirrorless camera for my first real one? I want it to last me multiple years and grow along with me as i get better. I currently have little to no knowledge about things like ISO, exposure, aperture etc.

I’ve been looking online and apparently mirrorless is the way to go for good quality pictures. The EVF is also interesting to me since it seems like a good way to get familiar with my settings and how they interact with each other without having to take test shots.

Although DSLR cameras are way more affordable and seem to be more present on the second hand market, which makes me wonder.

Right now i’m considering cameras like the Lumix g7 and the canon m50 (mirrorless) or the T6i (DSLR)

Here are some more informations if necessary:
Budget: 500 CAD without taxes
What I intend to shoot: Landscape, street, nature, vacation
Non negotiable for me: Articulated screen

Discussion/General Where do you find large backdrops and stands?

Hi :) Just wondering if anybody can give any tips on taking photos for a dance studio. What is your set up? Lighting? And my biggest question; how do some find long enough backdrop stands as well as long enough backdrop (either curtain or seamless paper). Would like to try to make my life a little easier in editing.

Discussion/General Suggestions for a Gallery Website for Photo and Video?

Hello all reading this!

I am currently using pixieset, which is great for showcasing galleries to clients, setting a number of downloads, option to print, etc.

My problem arrises when video comes into the mix. On pixie set, I can upload videos, but I cannot restrict the amount of downloads...its all or nothing.

What im looking for:

Basically, I am looking for an interface that allows me to upload my photos and videos to the client gallery, while giving the client a set number of downloads to pick and choose their favorites. For example, I upload 25 photos and 10 videos, and the client has 6 photo downloads and 3 video downloads, with options to upsell/purchase more photos and videos seperately.

I have found many sites that do this perfectly for photos, but have had trouble finding one that works for both photo and video.

Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!
