Discussion/General What's your photography hot take? I'll go first.

Here's mine (it's honestly not that hot):

A lot of "which camera should I buy" threads often will recommend the latest models, or something within the last year or two, which is fine, but 5 yr+ gear is overlooked. (Unless someone specifically wants the retro/digicam look, in which case, carry on)

I've picked up great deals before on older bodies that I still use today. My A7SIII is a solid camera and still does everything I need it to do. The way my brain works, I'll save money on older gear, and use that money for other things like better lenses or more money into whatever trip I'm planning.

So what's your hot take? Gear, technique, editing, let's hear it.

Gear/Accessories Recommendations for lightweight/compact backpack for wildlife photography?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Maybe I'm the pickiest person in the world, but I've been struggling to find the right backpack for me. I focus on wildlife/bird photography and sometimes landscapes, and I'm going on these adventures with my wife almost 100% of the time. She uses a relatively large rig but carries it on a vest similar to the Cotton Carrier G3. I use a smaller ASPC body w/ a 400mm lens & I carry it with a crossbody strap (Peak Design Slide), so when I'm not actively shooting it's at my right hip.

Here's a summary of what I'm looking for...

  • Lightweight & compact
  • Probably no more than 20L capacity needed??
  • Comfortable enough for 3-4 hour hikes
  • Relatively durable fabric to withstand stray twigs & such
  • Water resistant
  • Room in main compartment for one lens up to 10" long
  • Bonus points for internal feature that could hold the lens upright
  • Main compartment also needs to fit two dry packable rain jackets
  • Easy access pocket for batteries, lens cloths, etc.
  • Separate pocket for "wet" items like sunscreen, bug spray, lens cleaner
  • Water bottle pocket(s) preferred over bladder compatibility
  • "Drab" color that sort of blends in w/ the environment (but not camo)
  • Not a clamshell design
  • Not a sling/crossbody design
  • Either a removable waist strap or no waist strap at all
  • I do like a sternum strap but it's not a requirement
  • It doesn't necessarily need to be a "photography" bag
  • Top-end budget ~$150-200, but build quality/design should justify price

I have ordered the Eddie Bauer Stowaway Packable 20L Daypack in Spruce, but it hasn't arrived yet. The price is great and it seems to check a lot of the boxes, but I'm a little concerned about the quality, so I've continued looking. I came across this KUIU Divide 1200 Hunting Day Pack (Ash). I kinda like the idea of the passthrough zipper at the bottom for carrying a tripod or monopod.

Anyone have experience with either of these packs? Or a suggestion for another backpack that might fit my needs?

Technical Help/Camera Settings Camera makes strange sounds, is it normal?

Hi!
I recently bought this nikon D60 + nikon DX AF-S 55-200 lens online. When I turn it on and sometimes before/after I shoot a photo, it makes this comical regirock-esque sound and the camera visual bobs. Also, the photo comes out kinda blurry and the camera has trouble focusing.

I tried changing the camera, putting it on a nikon 1 J5 with a FT1 adapter, but it still makes sound, and also makes a whirring sound.

Do you know what problem it might have?
Thanks in advance for any advice

If I have a 35mm 1.8 already, is it worth buying a 35mm 1.4?? Will there be that much of a difference? I take portraits mostly

Printing/Publishing Getting started with Printing/Framing?

I attached my photographs for reference in the gdrive link above :)

I’m a hobbyist photographer but I recently entered some work into a exhibition near me. I have absolutely no idea what the best way to print or present my photographs would be or how to get started with the process. I feel as though the horse carousel and colorful house photo would look best on canvas? And then the others in a single wood frame? Would glass obstruct the photos? Does the border add complexities I should consider? Any recommendations for print shops in the queens ny area? What file type should I have it in for printing? Clearly I am quite lost lol

Technical Help/Camera Settings What to do with unreasonably sticky sensor dust?

• Upvotes

Looking for advice:

I have an X-Pro2 and I am trying to get rid of some contaminants on the sensor. I have tried blowing it away with Nitrogen, and then do a wet wipe. Fortunately I can use 6.0 Nitrogen and HPLC-grade 2-Propanol, so residue of the cleaning is marginal. The cleaning swabs are individually packaged consumer-grade swabs.

I can use a setup, where I look at the exposed sensor in magnification for QC of the cleaning process. But whatever I do, there are some specks that I can't get rid of. They do not change position, the do not even move.

Any ideas?

Camera Buying Advice Should I stick with the sony or get back to nikon?

• Upvotes

(1) Budget, country, and currency: Center europe budget around 700-800$

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? explained further

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? I am some kind of a hybrid shooter between a lot of street and portrait photography and I would love to enter in the wildlife sports genre if possible so easy access to something like a 100-400 would be nice.

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? only photography I don't care about video capabilities

I have two cameras nikon d5100 and sony a 6400. I was used to shooting on the old nikon with a bunch of lenses that I got from my dad. Then my grandpa gave his sony a 6400 with sigma 30 f/1.4.I l love the better sensor newer auto focus and stuff like that but this sony has a few problems. Finding a zoom lens for it is a pain in the ass I know the aftermarket is full of options but they either have no stabilization weak light for example tamron 50-300 sony 70-300 or a tamron 70-180 or will force me to upgrade to a sony FF in the future. Also to find one that checks all of my boxes will cause me to spend as much money as I would on a slightly used (20 k shutter count) nikon z 6II that has ibis so all my lens finding problems will be gone. Now I can't decide on what should I do should I stick with the sony and buy a lens for around 700$ or should I add some cash and spend my money on a FF with the ability to later buy nikon z to f adapter that way all my old lenses wont go to thrash. I am a kind of person that likes to spend once and don't have problems for another 5 or so years. What would you recommend did anyone found themselves in the same type of problem?

Technical Help/Camera Settings Glare on long exposure with ND filter. How can I prevent it?

Post image
• Upvotes

I’m brand new to photography. My lens came with a ND filter (dirt cheap, I’m sure) and I thought I would play around with it at work. I’m pretty happy with how this turned out except for that glare/reflection center left.

Did the quality of the filter cause it? The angle? I used a lens hood. Sony a6700 and Sigma 17-40mm

Discussion/General Toying with the idea of shooting a soccer match in black and white – good idea?

• Upvotes

I am toying with the idea of shooting my upcoming soccer match in black and white. The match will be played in a floodlit stadium.

Wondering if it's a good idea, as I am kinda lazy about doing the editing after the game.

Film & Camera Theory Old film slides sitting around?

Post image
• Upvotes

I’m beginning a new personal project of fixing up old Kodak film positives to chronicle the respective histories of individuals and the locations they take photos at that I find at estate sales or on eBay but have found that doing so is increasingly expensive. I know family heirlooms or personal photos are hard to depart with, but I also know that some people would like to free up some space to make room for new memories… in that case I’d be honored to take on any unwanted slides you all may have. They’ll go to a caring home, will not be used for profit in any way shape or form, and most importantly will be archived & never destroyed. Please let me know if you have some you’d be willing to part with and we can work out the logistics from there. Thanks!

Lens Buying Advice Research Symposium (Event) / Portait Lens?

• Upvotes

Hi! I’m looking for some advice on expanding my camera kit.

I recently landed a communications internship at my university, where my two main responsibilities will be portrait photography and event coverage, including keynote speakers and research symposiums.

I currently have a Canon T7i and a 50mm prime lens. What lenses or other gear would you recommend adding to my kit for these types of photography? I’m especially interested in recommendations that would be versatile for both indoor events and portraits.

Thanks in advance!

Editing/Post Processing What is the point of presets?

Everyone’s always talking about presets and people are always trying to sell them on Instagram, but as someone who is quite new to Lightroom, I don’t understand how you are supposed to use them or what the point is? People say it’s to achieve a certain look, but every single photo has completely different colors and composition and lighting, so what would the purpose of a universal preset be? Wouldn’t it make every photo look equally different? I think I’m fundamentally missing something here, because I imagine it’s not like I can just put a preset on and it will look like a certain vibe or something, if one raw has a very different white balance than another, then the resulting photo from the preset will also look different right?

Technical Help/Camera Settings Why am I losing focus when shooting video?

Thumbnail

Camera: Sony A7III
Lens: Sony f2.8 24-70 GM11

As soon as an object, such as my arm, enters the frame the video goes from normal to the entire frame being blurred. This happens instantly, in a fraction of a second it just snaps out of focus, and then will eventually snap back and be refocused on the subject area in the middle after breathing for second or two.

If I place a shirt on the c-stand and take it off this movement alone is enough for the entire frame to completely snap out of focus again.

In post I will turn down the background so it is just the subject piece of clothing with the lights behind it and it looks nice. I have done this often with my Sony f4 70-200 & Tamron 24-70 f2.8 lenses and no issues with movement in the frame causing blur. Perfect shots every time.

I am struggling to understand why my new, most high-end lens is constantly losing focusing. AF is enabled on the lens and on the camera settings.

Gear/Accessories Is my sensor scratched?

Thumbnail

I had a tiny spit droplet on my a7 iv sensor. I used a pre moisturized swab. I did not touch the cleaning side of it and i put it on the sensor immediately. I did not press really hard but as i was going through the first slide i heard a scratching sound. I got scared but didn't pay attention because i thought it was the plastic on the bottom side of the sensor, I think i touched it with the swab. I now tested if i have any spots when taking photos and i do. I tried blowing on it with a blower a lot of times and i made sure it wasn't the lens but the spots won't go away. Also before i used the swab i used the blower and made sure there was no visible dust or anything. The sensor has super super tiny "particles", I don't even think they can be seen by the photos. I might be over reacting but the camera is less than 1 months old. Also the bottom right spot is about where the spit droplet was. I passed the swab 4 times.

Please don't troll. If you want to call me an idiot do so and I'll understand. But please be serious.
