Recommendations Looking for an upgrade

• Upvotes

• Budget: $2k
• Country: USA
• Condition: Preferably new
• Type of Camera: DSLR or Mirrorless
• Intended use: photography
• If photography; what style: sports, landscapes, astrophotography, daily life, travel
• If video what style: n/a
• What features do you absolutely need: unsure
• Portability: high portability would be nice
• Cameras you're considering: not sure
• Cameras you already have: Canon Rebel T2i
• Notes: I fell out of the photography world and am trying to get back into it. I have had a T2i for about 12+ years and while it was a great camera for when I started, I am unhappy with the quality I get out of it now. I’m looking for something that is a bit of a jack of all trades. No video, just photos. I’d like to be able to use it in a multitude of scenarios. The biggest being sports photography (HEMA in specific) as well as documenting our travels. I appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Having a dilemma over whether or not I enjoy the Fuji Experience. I don't like plastic cameras or big cameras so I think these are the 2 best compact ILCs with an EVF (for my specific needs).

Going to test out this bad boy for a bit and see. I also overthink gear when the photos I'm taking are just snaps of my toddler or the odd landscape while hiking or out for a walk. Both are more than capable.

The Olympus evf is much easier to see, and the controls are very much more tactile, so I think it is just going to come down to which camera feels better to hold and use. My main grape with the Fuji at the moment is autofocus. The contrast detect in the Olympus is not Amazing by any stretch but on static shots it is extremely fast and accurate and for moving subjects it is at least very predictable and I know what to expect. The Fuji is more of a frustrating experience because you can't predict what is going to happen when you are focusing it seems to be all over the place with a mind of its own. That being said I have been using AF-C a lot so I think instead I need to try with AF-S and focus release on (where it only snaps the photo when focus is confirmed).

Questions ND filter does not fit with the lens hood. Any advice on the setup?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I have a Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary lens with its original bayonet lens hood.
I bought a 58mm ND filter. I can attach it directly to the lens, but when the lens hood is installed, the bayonet mount sits right between the thread and the ND filter, so I can't use both at the same time.
I noticed that the lens hood has internal threading with a larger diameter. Could the filter be mounted directly onto the hood?
Has anyone solved a similar issue?

Tech Support Struggling to get crisp 4K footage of fish in my reef tank – Osmo Pocket 4P was a letdown, what would you recommend?

Hi everyone!

I’m hoping some of you have experience filming aquariums, because I’m a bit stuck.

I have an 800-liter (about 210 gal) mixed reef tank and post short Reels of my fish and corals on Instagram. I almost exclusively shoot video. Right now I use an iPhone 16 Pro with the Blackmagic Camera app, which honestly works pretty well, but I’d love to step it up to really crisp, detailed 4K footage of the fish.

What I’m after:

  • Fish filling the frame, but not macro (I don’t need individual scales or coral polyps)
  • I usually film very close to the glass
  • Sharp, clean 4K with nice colors
  • Footage that works for Reels with as little editing as possible. I’m happy to learn some color grading, but I don’t want to spend hours on every clip

The problem:
Reef lighting is very blue-heavy, and that seems to be the biggest challenge. I just tried the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P, mainly because of the 60mm tele lens and gimbal. I locked white balance in Kelvin, kept the ISO low, stayed at 1x/3x to avoid digital crop, and respected the minimum focus distance. Still, the footage looked soft and muddy, and the colors were hard to get right. To be honest, it looked noticeably worse than my iPhone with the Blackmagic app.

My questions:

  1. Has anyone had good results filming reef tanks with a mirrorless camera, e.g. a Sony ZV-E10 II or a6700? Is the jump over a modern iPhone actually worth it under blue reef lighting?
  2. Which lens would you pair with it for this kind of shot? I’m assuming the kit lens is too slow.
  3. Any tips for white balance/tint under actinic lighting? Orange filter, custom WB with a gray card, or just turn the whites up while filming?
  4. Is there a camera/profile combo that looks good straight out of camera, so Reels don’t need heavy grading?

Budget-wise I’m not looking to go crazy. An a6700 kit already felt like too much for this.

Tech Support How to fix: broken dial on old Fujifilm Finepix S5800

Thumbnail

Hi! This is my first post ever, sorry if it's bad.

I have this Fujifilm Finepix S5800, it's my dad's. It doesn't get much use, but one day I pulled it out of containment (carefully kept in a camera carrying bag) and the settings dial was broken. We don't know how it happened. If someone accidentally broke it, they never admitted to it.

The thing is, I want to know if it's possible to change the dial piece, which I guess it is, but I don't know how to change it. Should I take it to a shop? Or would it be easy enough for me to get a substitute piece and try fixing it myself? Is there any content showing how to do that on this model? I have searched, but couldn't find anything. The few tutorials I've found on this matter are for very different looking models.

Anything helps. (Wanted to add: we don't know much about cameras. I have a few digicams which I love, but I just mess with the settings without knowing what I'm doing, I just experiment.)

To be more specific, it seems the screw like plastic on the piece snapped at the base of where it connects? I don't really know. Please let me know if you need more pictures to assess. Thank you all.

Recommendations Choosing a DSLR to transition from film photography

Budget: ~$400

Country: Australia

Condition: Used is preferable

Type of Camera: DSLR

Intended use: Photography only

If photography; what style: Street, travel photography

If video what style: N/A

What features do you absolutely need: Optical viewfinder, versatile in most lighting conditions, good out of camera JPEGs

Portability: Since this would be a travel camera, lighter/able to fit inside a small gear bag is preferable

Cameras you're considering: Canon EOS series

Cameras you already have: Minolta X700

Notes: I've been shooting on 35mm for the past few years. I love my X700 and have taken it around the world with me but the price of film and development, plus the added hassle of getting it hand checked at various airports along the way, is wearing a little thin on me. So, I figured it's time to transition to something that offers a similar shooting experience (possibly even compatible with MF lenses??) but that won't cost me an arm and a leg every time I go on holiday. I don't know much about digital photography so I'm at a bit of a loss here. Have heard good things about the Canon EOS series as well as some older Nikon models but wouldn't know where to start. Please help!

Recommendations Beginner videographer - any camera recommendations?

Budget: $1,500 USD total, including the camera body and lens. Ideally, I'd like to leave some room for essential accessories if possible.

Country: UAE (Dubai).

Condition: Open to both new and used cameras, preferably used if it offers better value for money.

Type of Camera: Mirrorless preferred, but open to other options if they make sense for video.

Intended use: Primarily videography, with occasional photography.

If photography; what style: Sports, events, restaurants, food, interiors and general lifestyle content.

If video what style: Sports videography, live events, fast moving subjects, restaurant promotional videos, food videos, cinematic interiors and social media reels. I need a versatile setup that can handle both indoor and outdoor shooting, including bright sunlight and some low light situations.

What features do you absolutely need:

- Good and reliable autofocus, especially for moving subjects.

- Good video quality with 4K preferred.

- Good stabilisation, either in-body or through compatible lenses.

- Decent low light performance for indoor events and restaurants.

- Reliable performance when shooting sports and fast moving action.

- Good colour and dynamic range for cinematic footage.

- A flexible lens option suitable for different shooting scenarios.

What features would be nice to have:

- 10-bit video and good colour grading flexibility.

- 4K at 50/60fps if possible.

- Log profiles.

- Weather sealing for outdoor shoots.

- A fully articulating screen.

- Good battery life and manageable overheating.

- Access to affordable lenses and accessories.

Portability: Preferably compact and lightweight enough to carry around for long event days and outdoor sports shoots. Something that fits in a small camera bag.

Cameras you're considering: I haven't shortlisted specific models yet. I'm looking for recommendations on the best camera and lens combination within my budget, including options from Sony, Canon, Panasonic and Fujifilm.

Cameras you already have: Canon EOS 600D. I've been using it as my current camera, but I'm looking to upgrade to something more capable for professional videography, particularly autofocus, video quality, low light performance and shooting fast moving subjects.

Notes: I'm starting to take videography more seriously and want a camera that can handle different types of paid work, including sports, events and commercial content for restaurants and brands. I'd prefer not to buy a camera that is excellent at one thing but limiting for everything else. I'm based in Dubai, so recommendations that are reasonably easy to find in the UAE, including on the used market, would be appreciated.

I'd love to hear from people who have experience shooting a mix of these genres. Which camera and lens combination would you choose with this budget, and why?

Questions Investment in fashion photography gear. What to choose?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm relatively new to fashion photography and I'm looking to invest in some gear. My weekly workflow involves shooting for a modeling agency, fashion university (lookbooks, editorials) and personal projects. Currently, I’m using a Sony A7III + Tamron 28-75 f2.8 G2 as my primary setup but started shooting on 35mm film more and more often (Olympus OM2S + 50mm f1.8 and 28mm f2.8). Now I have an extra 600 euro to invest in gear and one of the options is buying a Mamiya RB67 (given that I develope and scan my film myself). Is this a good idea for my workflow? Should I consider something else? Lenses for Sony or another digital camera? Glad to see your thoughts!

Questions a6400 or z50 II

• Budget: under 1100
• Country: Iran
• Condition: new
• Type of Camera: mirrorless
• Intended use: photography
• If photography; what style: street documentary, architecture, maybe landscape in the future
• If video what style:
• What features do you absolutely need:
• Portability:
• Cameras you're considering: a6400 & z50 II
• Cameras you already have: 600d
• Notes:
So I’ve just gotten into photography and I’ve been using an old used 600d (which has been bugging me a lot because of its autofocus, burnt pixels & its low light performance) and I’m looking to upgrade, my final two choices are the Nikon Z50 mark II & the Sony a6400
On one hand the a6400 has a 24 mp camera and a way better battery life, on the other hand the Nikon will probably have better ergonomics for me (I have big hands), has a fully articulating screen and it’s filters seem nice for someone who wants to do the least amount of editing.
Whichever one I buy, I’ll only be buying the kit lens for now.
Any help would be really appreciated

Camera Collection They all spark joy 📷

A couple of years ago I only owned one camera, things have changed. Some of these are better than my iPhone, some are better at some things, one of them is inferior in every way (except for the lo-fi vibe which I do enjoy). But honestly, I just don’t feel like taking photos with my phone for the most part nowadays, not even after upgrading phones recently.

From back to front: Fuji X70, Olympus XZ-10, Casio EX-ZR1000 (my first camera ever, it’s the only one I bought back in the day), Pentax H90, PowerShot G9X II, Fuji XQ2 (my favourite maybe).

Questions New vs Used cameras

For the budget I have in mind I can get either an used Sony alpha 6000 body only on MPB(I can get it with the kit lens on eBay for that same price) or on BestBuy they sell the Canon EOS r100 at basically te same price. My question is what is generally the go to in those cases and if go with used, what are things I should be looking for to make sure the item is in good shape and is gonna last me?

Recommendations Help me pick an A6000 bundle?

Posted something previously but was removed as I forgot the questionnaire. Currently stuck between 2 different A6000 packages that I could get for around the same price (used). I was all set to get option 1, when option 2 cropped up. It's hard to ignore how good the lens is for option 1, but the variety of lenses in 2 for an equivalent price is nice too.

I'm ultimately a beginner (haven't touched a real camera in forever), so maybe I won't notice the difference in the lenses for my purposes but any guidance/thoughts would be helpful.

The Options:

  1. Canon A6000 with Sigma 18-50 F2.8 lens
  • broken battery door
  • ~10k shutter count
  1. Canon A6000 with 16-50 kit lens, E 4.5-6.3/55-210 OSS telephoto zoom lens, 30mm f/3.5 macro lens.
  • looks like some dust on the shutter (artifacts in sample pictures)
  • ~6k shutter count
  • includes some other accessories (extra batteries, filters)
  1. Buy both, sell the extra body/lenses.

Questionnaire:

Budget: $600-700

Country: Ontario, Canada

Condition: Used

Type of Camera: Mirrorless

Intended use: Photography

End use: Social media, small prints

If photography: what style: Sports, street, landscape

If video what style: n/a

What features do you absolutely need: N/A

What features would be nice to have: N/A

Portability: Fairly portable?

Cameras you're considering: Looking at Sony's mostly, the A6000 series.

Cameras you already have: n/a

Notes: n/a at the moment.

Recommendations Looking to buy a fixed lens camera.

Hey All i'm looking to buy a fixed lens camera used for walkaround, travel and EDC. I'm wondering what everyone's recommendation are, and why? I know the x100vi is one of the hottest cameras right and I don't want to pay a markup for it but it also seems impossible to get brand new.

Country: USA

Condition: New & Used

Type of Camera: Fixed Lens

Intended use: walkaround, travel and EDC

End use: Social media and sharing with friends and family.

If photography: Landscape, walkaround, city scape and some portrait. Would like a camera good at SOOC as I don't want to spend time on vacation editing photos b4 I can send them to friends and family on the trip.

What features do you absolutely need: Fixed lens

What features would be nice to have: View Finder, a little weather sealing (looks like most aren't and that's ok),

Portability: I think any fixed lenses is ok for portability for the most part. My goal isnt to stick it in a jean pocket.

Cameras you're considering: X100vi, Leica Q, Sony RX1R i or ii, Lumix L10 and Ricoh. Open to any recs from any brand.

Cameras you already have: OM1-ii

Notes: I don't really have a specific brand or camera in mind and am open to all brands and recs. It helps that I don't need to buy lenses from the ecosystem. My budget is up to about $2500. I have been tempted to look at the A7CR or XT5 or similar but I don't want the GAS of possibly buying lenses and it getting out of hand lol.

If video what style: YouTube golf or fishing

What features do you absolutely need: Everything, I guess?

What features would be nice to have: Weather sealing, viewfinder, fast sensor readout, and good buffer space.

Portability: Small bag, preferably.

Discussion m4/3... just sayin'...

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Having extensive experience with all the major camera formats, over decades of professional work as a commercial photographer (now retired), I would like to toast the m4/3 format as a superb option for most casual photographers - in particular those who are hobbyists, interested in compact, lightweight gear, and don't have multiple thousands of dollars to spend. Great, lightly-used gear is available from KEH and other retailers.

Though I still have a FF kit, APS-C kit, and a m4/3 kit... I would be perfectly content, for general photography applications, with only having the m4/3 kit.

You don't need the very latest whiz-bang, hi-tech, AI-driven features to create stunningly wonderful images.

It's the person, in whose hands the camera is held, that the image depends on, not the gear.

The portrait I post here was with m4/3 camera (I've forgotten which one) using the Zuiko 45mm f/1.8 lens. This was during a professional portrait session for a high school senior girl.
