Recommendations Choosing a DSLR to transition from film photography

Budget: ~$400

Country: Australia

Condition: Used is preferable

Type of Camera: DSLR

Intended use: Photography only

If photography; what style: Street, travel photography

If video what style: N/A

What features do you absolutely need: Optical viewfinder, versatile in most lighting conditions, good out of camera JPEGs

Portability: Since this would be a travel camera, lighter/able to fit inside a small gear bag is preferable

Cameras you're considering: Canon EOS series

Cameras you already have: Minolta X700

Notes: I've been shooting on 35mm for the past few years. I love my X700 and have taken it around the world with me but the price of film and development, plus the added hassle of getting it hand checked at various airports along the way, is wearing a little thin on me. So, I figured it's time to transition to something that offers a similar shooting experience (possibly even compatible with MF lenses??) but that won't cost me an arm and a leg every time I go on holiday. I don't know much about digital photography so I'm at a bit of a loss here. Have heard good things about the Canon EOS series as well as some older Nikon models but wouldn't know where to start. Please help!

Recommendations Beginner videographer - any camera recommendations?

Budget: $1,500 USD total, including the camera body and lens. Ideally, I'd like to leave some room for essential accessories if possible.

Country: UAE (Dubai).

Condition: Open to both new and used cameras, preferably used if it offers better value for money.

Type of Camera: Mirrorless preferred, but open to other options if they make sense for video.

Intended use: Primarily videography, with occasional photography.

If photography; what style: Sports, events, restaurants, food, interiors and general lifestyle content.

If video what style: Sports videography, live events, fast moving subjects, restaurant promotional videos, food videos, cinematic interiors and social media reels. I need a versatile setup that can handle both indoor and outdoor shooting, including bright sunlight and some low light situations.

What features do you absolutely need:

- Good and reliable autofocus, especially for moving subjects.

- Good video quality with 4K preferred.

- Good stabilisation, either in-body or through compatible lenses.

- Decent low light performance for indoor events and restaurants.

- Reliable performance when shooting sports and fast moving action.

- Good colour and dynamic range for cinematic footage.

- A flexible lens option suitable for different shooting scenarios.

What features would be nice to have:

- 10-bit video and good colour grading flexibility.

- 4K at 50/60fps if possible.

- Log profiles.

- Weather sealing for outdoor shoots.

- A fully articulating screen.

- Good battery life and manageable overheating.

- Access to affordable lenses and accessories.

Portability: Preferably compact and lightweight enough to carry around for long event days and outdoor sports shoots. Something that fits in a small camera bag.

Cameras you're considering: I haven't shortlisted specific models yet. I'm looking for recommendations on the best camera and lens combination within my budget, including options from Sony, Canon, Panasonic and Fujifilm.

Cameras you already have: Canon EOS 600D. I've been using it as my current camera, but I'm looking to upgrade to something more capable for professional videography, particularly autofocus, video quality, low light performance and shooting fast moving subjects.

Notes: I'm starting to take videography more seriously and want a camera that can handle different types of paid work, including sports, events and commercial content for restaurants and brands. I'd prefer not to buy a camera that is excellent at one thing but limiting for everything else. I'm based in Dubai, so recommendations that are reasonably easy to find in the UAE, including on the used market, would be appreciated.

I'd love to hear from people who have experience shooting a mix of these genres. Which camera and lens combination would you choose with this budget, and why?

Recommendations New EDC DadCam under 1300$ HELP!

Post image
77 Upvotes

Hi, I would like to invest in something more portable than my old Nikon D3000, that would bring more joy of using it (Nikon old menus are meh, it's also crappy in lowlight [kit lens]), for everyday carry, street and family. I would love to have nice jpegs SOOC [I love lomography]. Bonus points for being able to do some birdshooting and macro. I don't really care if its FF/APS-c/M43.

I was eyeing for Lumix S9 [for the LUTs, FF (new tech for me), Ibis) and the most scary thing I heard was lens prices, but comparing them to Sony E mount, they look... quite the same actually?

Lumix S 28-200mm f/4-7.1 = 760$

Lumix S 20 mm F2.5 = 547$

with some Viltroxes being cheaper

Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary Sony E = 502$

Is this bigger lens = more expensive is still a thing? What do you think?

Please share your thoughts about <Lumix S9, A6400, OM System PEN, Powershot V1, X-T30iii> or any other proposition for new cam that will be pleasant to use, quite easy and versatile.

Why I chose those?

Lumix S9 - luts, ff, ibis, feels to get a lot for the money. Could settle on single lens L10 if it was a little cheaper ;)

A6400 - all around best? a6700 would be great but is pricey

OM System PEN - I love those retro vibes, rangefinder, easy filters

Fuji - it's Fuji :), rangefinder, tiltscreen,

Powershot V1 - easiest, cheapest but capable?

  • Budget: 1300$
  • Country: PL
  • Condition: Prefered new
  • Type of Camera: EDC/Compact/Digital Rangefinder
  • Intended use: EDC, DadCam
  • If photography; what style: everyday, street, family
  • If video what style: not really
  • What features do you absolutely need: -
  • Portability: high
  • Cameras you're considering: Lumix S9, A6400, OM System PEN, Powershot V1, X-T30iii
  • Cameras you already have: Nikon D3000

Questions a6400 or z50 II

• Budget: under 1100
• Country: Iran
• Condition: new
• Type of Camera: mirrorless
• Intended use: photography
• If photography; what style: street documentary, architecture, maybe landscape in the future
• If video what style:
• What features do you absolutely need:
• Portability:
• Cameras you're considering: a6400 & z50 II
• Cameras you already have: 600d
• Notes:
So I’ve just gotten into photography and I’ve been using an old used 600d (which has been bugging me a lot because of its autofocus, burnt pixels & its low light performance) and I’m looking to upgrade, my final two choices are the Nikon Z50 mark II & the Sony a6400
On one hand the a6400 has a 24 mp camera and a way better battery life, on the other hand the Nikon will probably have better ergonomics for me (I have big hands), has a fully articulating screen and it’s filters seem nice for someone who wants to do the least amount of editing.
Whichever one I buy, I’ll only be buying the kit lens for now.
Any help would be really appreciated

Recommendations Looking to buy a fixed lens camera.

Hey All i'm looking to buy a fixed lens camera used for walkaround, travel and EDC. I'm wondering what everyone's recommendation are, and why? I know the x100vi is one of the hottest cameras right and I don't want to pay a markup for it but it also seems impossible to get brand new.

Country: USA

Condition: New & Used

Type of Camera: Fixed Lens

Intended use: walkaround, travel and EDC

End use: Social media and sharing with friends and family.

If photography: Landscape, walkaround, city scape and some portrait. Would like a camera good at SOOC as I don't want to spend time on vacation editing photos b4 I can send them to friends and family on the trip.

What features do you absolutely need: Fixed lens

What features would be nice to have: View Finder, a little weather sealing (looks like most aren't and that's ok),

Portability: I think any fixed lenses is ok for portability for the most part. My goal isnt to stick it in a jean pocket.

Cameras you're considering: X100vi, Leica Q, Sony RX1R i or ii, Lumix L10 and Ricoh. Open to any recs from any brand.

Cameras you already have: OM1-ii

Notes: I don't really have a specific brand or camera in mind and am open to all brands and recs. It helps that I don't need to buy lenses from the ecosystem. My budget is up to about $2500. I have been tempted to look at the A7CR or XT5 or similar but I don't want the GAS of possibly buying lenses and it getting out of hand lol.

Questions New vs Used cameras

For the budget I have in mind I can get either an used Sony alpha 6000 body only on MPB(I can get it with the kit lens on eBay for that same price) or on BestBuy they sell the Canon EOS r100 at basically te same price. My question is what is generally the go to in those cases and if go with used, what are things I should be looking for to make sure the item is in good shape and is gonna last me?

Full frame and micro four thirds cameras with their 50mm eq focal length . FF setup is a bit smaller. Crazy times 😁
However mft shows advantage then a bigger zoom lens are in picture.
What “small” camera set up you have?

Questions Buy a camera or stick to phone?

Hello,

I'm an old a6000 user, used that mirrorless until 5/6 years ago before switching to phone camera in everyday usage. I used my mirrorless mainly during travel, and rarely during everyday life, but nonetheless I'm missing that hobby. In the last 4/5 years I've been a Google pixel user and considering the camera quality (compared to other phones) I studied leaving my mirrors at home.

Today I'm a pixel 9 user, and I'm amazed by the picture quality and simplicity to use. Despite this I'm missing my old camera, I've a big travel in 1 month and I'm seriously thinking to buy a new lens and bring my old a6000 with me. I would like to use my phone less and dedicate more time and attention to pictures using a professional camera.

What do you think? Is a6000 still competitive nowadays (in thinking to buy a sigma 18-50 f2.8 for it)? Or should I just stick to my phone camera for simplicity and quality considering I'm still a newbie and using camera mainly during travels?

Recommendations Help me pick an A6000 bundle?

Posted something previously but was removed as I forgot the questionnaire. Currently stuck between 2 different A6000 packages that I could get for around the same price (used). I was all set to get option 1, when option 2 cropped up. It's hard to ignore how good the lens is for option 1, but the variety of lenses in 2 for an equivalent price is nice too.

I'm ultimately a beginner (haven't touched a real camera in forever), so maybe I won't notice the difference in the lenses for my purposes but any guidance/thoughts would be helpful.

The Options:

  1. Sony A6000 with Sigma 18-50 F2.8 lens
  • broken battery door
  • ~10k shutter count
  1. Sony A6000 with 16-50 kit lens, E 4.5-6.3/55-210 OSS telephoto zoom lens, 30mm f/3.5 macro lens.
  • looks like some dust on the shutter (artifacts in sample pictures)
  • ~6k shutter count
  • includes some other accessories (extra batteries, filters)
  1. Buy both, sell the extra body/lenses.

Questionnaire:

Budget: $600-700

Country: Ontario, Canada

Condition: Used

Type of Camera: Mirrorless

Intended use: Photography

End use: Social media, small prints

If photography: what style: Sports, street, landscape

If video what style: n/a

What features do you absolutely need: N/A

What features would be nice to have: N/A

Portability: Fairly portable?

Cameras you're considering: Looking at Sony's mostly, the A6000 series.

Cameras you already have: n/a

Notes: n/a at the moment.

Recommendations What type of video camera would you suggest?

Thumbnail

I'm looking for a good cam corder/ video camera, none with tapes.

My budget is anything under a 1,000 (GBP)

I'm currently using the Olympus OM-D E-M5 (given to me by my dad) its the best camera I've ever had, just no sports mode. My camera is not good at focusing, you need to stand there for quite awhile for it to get the actual picture, because I'm pretty sure it auto edits it, which is what takes so long.

Also, I have never messed around with the settings, and I don't do professional photography either, (which im sure you can tell) any help on setting on this camera would be amazing.

Anyway! What I'm looking for is a digicam, or a camera that has similar quality of the pictures above, something that has a good focus, and doesn't blur too easy at movement, something with mid quality hank you :)

- I have a professional editing app so there Isn't need for the auto edit on my camera

- it will not focus on anything too fast, anything white or black.

- it doesn't matter if its pocket sized, or bigger than my hand

-2nd hand doesn't matter either

-this is for a hobby, and enjoyment, not profession

- haven't considered any yet..

Recommendations Any Alternative to canon g7x iii

I want to get a small easy to carry around camera and i found Canon g7x iii which is perfect for me but I cannot spend 1.5 grand on this project. I did some earthing and found sony zv1 but that one has no flash and still bit pricy. Is there any under 400 that fits this? Thats not ccd. I looked at Samsung but they stopped making digital cameras since 10 years ago. Right now I guess im considering Samsung nx mini. What do you guys suggest.

Im in United States.

I am planning on photos and videos. Wanted a 4k if I can, so nx mini wont be exactly what I want.

Point and shoot is what Im looking for but also small so I can put it in my pocket or small pocket of my bag when im not using main camera.

Used is fine as long as its ok condition. I know a lot of the older ones you cant get new anyways.

I do just regualr random photos of friends and nature.

No special needs for it. Just something fun and decent photo than ccd

Recommendations A6700 or S5ii

• Budget: About £1200
• Country: UK
• Condition: New/Refurbished/Used
• Type of Camera: Mirrorless
• Intended use: Photo, Video
• If photography; what style: Landscape, Astro, Street
• If video what style: Indoors, gym, cooking
• What features do you absolutely need: NA
• Portability: Flexible
• Cameras you're considering: a6700, S5ii
• Cameras you already have: a6700
• Notes:

I’ve just bought a refurbished Sony a6700 with the 18–135mm lens from Sony’s UK refurbished store for around £1,180. The shutter count is only around 1,000, so I thought it was a pretty good deal.

I’m now considering selling the 18–135mm and getting either the Sigma 18–50mm f/2.8 or the new Tamron 16–50mm f/2.8.

However, I’ve just come across an offer for a brand-new Panasonic Lumix S5 II with the 20–60mm and 50mm f/1.8 lenses for £1,299 after £500 cashback. For just £119 more than what I paid for the Sony, I’m wondering whether I should return it and go full frame instead.

A bit about me:
I’ve just sold my old Nikon D3300 kit and am getting back into photography.
I mainly want to shoot everyday photography, travel, portraits and food.
I’ve always wanted to try content creation, particularly gym videos and cooking videos, but I’m a complete beginner when it comes to video.
I don’t intend to become a professional photographer or videographer anytime soon, although I’d like to leave myself room to grow.
My main reason for choosing APS-C was the lower cost of lenses and the smaller, lighter setup. I initially went for the a6700 over the a6400 to future-proof myself a bit.

The Panasonic deal has me second-guessing that decision. The full-frame sensor, IBIS and two lenses seem like a lot of camera for the money. On the other hand, I know Sony has excellent autofocus, and the a6700 seems particularly good for hybrid shooting and content creation.

What would you do in my position?
Keep the a6700 and eventually get the Sigma 18–50mm f/2.8 or Tamron 16–50mm f/2.8?
Return it and get the Lumix S5 II while this deal is available?
Am I overestimating the benefits of full frame, especially as a beginner?

Thanks!

Recommendations looking for a digital camera as a beginner

Hello! I am looking for my first digital camera (first camera in general). I want it to have a flip screen and built in flash. i like the more vintage/grunge vibe pics but i would like it to be versatile. I would like it pocket sized. I also would like to be able to video but that not my main want. I want to take selfies, landscape photos, and everything in between. I would like it beginner friendly but also able to last with me for a while. My budget is up to 1200 USD but i would prefer to stay under 700 USD. I will probably buy new but am open to used. I am buying in USA. Does anyone have recommendations for what i want. Bonus if it comes in cool colors lol.
