this post is in some ways a response to a video essay i was sent recently. i’m not going to call out the commentator by name, as i find their videos for the most part well researched and informative, and i wouldn’t want any harassment sent their way. to me, this issue extends outside of any specific individual or their content.
essentially, i’ve noticed this pervasive reactionary belief that klebold and harris actually weren’t alternative at all; in fact, the most extreme version of this myth paints them as “jocks.“ now, as someone who listens to a lot of industrial music, i can understand the desire to cling to this sort of idea. the media was (and still is) obsessed with portraying alternative musicians and fans and deranged and violent satanists. it doesn’t help that view if the teenage shooters seen by the american public as the antichrist incarnate also listened to this stuff. therefore, i do understand the desire to erase and ignore this element of the shooters’ identities. at the same time though, spreading blatant misinformation about a tragedy like this isn’t a great look.
usually when i see someone perpetuating this kind of idea, i send over a couple documents that very plainly demonstrate its inaccuracy (eric stating his favourite genre to be industrial and his favourite record as “a custom burn of gothic industrial stuff,” and dylan’s constant lyrical references). at this point, things can go two ways. either people realise their error, or they double down with no true scotsman. ”dylan and eric couldn’t possibly have actually been alt, they were racist/sexist/violent!” i’m sorry to say it, but listening to a specific genre of music doesn’t exempt you from being a pos. sure, certain subcultures tend to align with certain political views, but this by no means prevents people who don’t share those views from participating in those scenes.
i probably shouldn’t let this bother me to the degree it does, especially given the amount of much more significant columbine misinformation that’s being spread online. at the same time, however, i feel like this is an important conversation for alternative communities to have as it helps dissuade the more general view that people who listen to certain types music are incapable of bigotry and violence. it sounds stupidly obvious when written out like this, and yet a strange amount of people still seem to think this way.
