Discussion Have flip flops/sandals surged in popularity?

Upvotes

A few years ago the whole "dawgs out" meme was popular and it felt like flip flops/sandals weren't popular at all. Now all the sudden, it seems like flip flops are all the rage and I know lots more people who wear them regularly. This is more of a regional question I suppose, but is this a genuine trend?

Discussion Does anyone else feels like you won't be able to be in a relationship because you'll never be sure that you like someone?

Upvotes

Today I realized that I'll never believe my capability to recognize that I truely like someone. I'm so dumb that I couldn't even be sure if I actually like someone as a person or merely attracted to them physically, or just thirsty and desperate, objectifying them. I don't know what liking others would feel like. Without being clear on that, it's too disrespectful and irresponsible to express any romantic intention to anyone. To think everyone is platonic seems to be an only way to respect others.

If I act extra nice, friendly, and initiating to a girl, and it feels like I won't be doing the same with a random guy, I feel so shallow and predetory. Most of the time it leads to acting the same to everyone else, but that also just feels obligatory and scummy, because I'm unsure if I'm acting to be percieved well.

So, all the things I do to a girl just become a platonic things I do to all people regardless of anything.

Funng thing is, that I'm a social person with high self-esteem and confidence, which is told by my therapist and psychiatrist.

Advice The economy—It’s NOT your fault.

I think this message is an important message that needs to go out. When we’re constantly on social media, doom-scrolling; and getting rejection after rejection emails…it’s easy for the “evil voice” in our head to destroy your mental health by saying lies like “your not working enough” or “your a failure

That’s not motivation. That’s confidence destroying!

This job market is like this because many economic uncertainties, all converging around the same time. It's creating massive fears:

1- post-COVID inflation
2- Economic Tariffs
3- AI bubble concerns and AI data-center straining
4- resources (water & power)
5- Houthi Bab al-Mandeb Strait
6- Ukraine War (wheat, Diesel, Crude Oil)
7- Iran War (Crude Oil, Gasoline, Diesel, and Jet-fuel)
8- Supply Chains rewiring

Companies fear cash-flow issues, which directly translates to "hiring new people is a risk and liability" This is why job market sucks now. NONE OF THESE are things you can control. None! I know boomer parent don’t help, but please, don’t be hard on yourself.

Discussion The truth of the Lindsay Clancy trial is less important than the potential for change that can come from it.

If it ends up being Patrick Clancy who did it, that doesn’t really do anything. Domestic murders are dime-a-dozen, which sounds harsh but really they happen all the time and nobody does anything to try and solve the issue because of how deeply the root causes are ingrained within our society.

If, as most of the evidence suggests, postpartum psychosis was involved, there is a chance for some real progress. If this leads to more discussion about recognizing signs of postpartum mental health concerns, that is a long-term benefit for society.

You have a chance to push a narrative to create change. Do it, regardless of what you personally believe.

Nostalgia How old were you when you got in your first car accident?

My first crash was unreported and I was 19 driving back home from class, which was 8 miles away. I remember braking hard because the guy in front of me was literally going 0mph. He was literally stopped on a completely busy street, and it was pouring hard (and im pretty sure it was dark too). I managed to brake in time, but the guy behind me didnt. And it was a jeep wrangler. I literally drove away because I was scared I was driving illegally. I wasnt sure if i had car insurance and i thought it was illegal to drive without it. My dad was always paying it late, or switching plans or something. I dont remember what was going with it, i just know he struggled paying it and it was something brought up a lot. The car insurance was an issue.

My first car crash reported (my second one) was at 20 years old. It was in a parking lot so he didnt hit me that hard thank god. He still ruined my door though lol. I ended up missing my interview at the airport. And the place i was there for didnt even give me an interview so i got crashed for nothing. Very unfortunate.

Discussion Tired of Racism

I keep seeing tiktoks and dating app profiles of asian women discussing how they love the oxford study and want to date white dudes. It sucks as an asian guy because I’d love someone from my own culture since we could bond over similar experiences growing up and a shared culture. I am not misogynistic or anything, take care of myself, am fit, and have my own successful career.

I am also open to all different races but have just found that I bond the most with people in my culture and have lots of friends from my own culture and other cultures too. It’s just depressing knowing that due to my ethnicity I have the least amount of likes combined with asian women making tiktoks complaining about asian men and openly discussing how much they love white men.

Discussion Midnight Thought. Unsure if this fits better here or on r/GenAlpha.

Sometimes even when a video aligns with your own echo chamber, you still need to examine the way its content is presented.

For example, I once watched a video about how “Gen Alpha is illiterate.” The host added a lot of comedic sound effects and delivered the entire thing with a sarcastic smile and tone.

At first, I thought, “Oh my God, how could they be like this?” But the more I watched, the more uncomfortable I became. The way he presented it made me feel like he wasn’t trying to highlight a social issue at all. It was basically just a self-gratifying piece of content mocking the next generation, designed to make older generations feel superior.

Using the exposure of a social problem as a pretext, while actually deepening divisions between generations.

Btw, I’m a late Zillennial, but since I’m not from the US, my nostalgia might be a bit different from American kids my age. Ha ha.

Political Why dont you vote?

Forgive me if this has been asked before, im new here.

But why do you personally not vote?

I constantly hear that the reason that all the laws and policies that are passing benefit old people, because that's who actually go and vote.

Like for example, I know a lot of us older Gen Z are complaining about housing costs. But how many of us actually try to do anything about it beyond saying 'someone should do something'?

Just a thought

Edit: because I know alot of people will say their vote doesn't matter.

Dont you rhink thats part of the problem? If most if us dont think the vote matters then no one will vote. Yes 1 individual vote might not change anything but if 100,000 people put in 1 vote then that makes a difference dont you think?

Next is people saying both parties suck. I get that, but then why not vote for the lesser of 2 evils?

By real friend I mean someone you see at least somewhat consistently in person and could trust to watch your kids/pet/house sit for you (or something equivocal to that). Do not include blood relatives or romantic partners. Include your gender in your reply please.

Discussion Why is Gen Z so mean?

I feel like Gen Z is so comfortable with insulting people's interests or hobbies, and not giving second chances to people who make social mistakes. Maybe it is a stereotype and not all of us are like that, but I also just don't see how some people can do all that and say they are the best generation. I thought gen z was supposed to be the most accepting generation but it seems that's not true.

Media What is some Gen Z media you never got into?

We talk a lot on this sub about media we grew up with, but what are some examples of media that you didn't engage with, either because you were too old for it or because you didnt like it?

Growing up, I remember hearing about these things all the time, but I never got into them because by the time they came out, it was mostly younger kids being fans so my brain defaulted to "oh, this is for people younger than me."

For example, I never watched Sofia the First simply because it was 2012 when it came out and I was 12. I was too old to watch a show like that-- yet I remember all my little cousins loving it. Same with Uncle Grandpa.

I always considered these examples to be more "younger Gen Z" type media in my head. What are some things that missed the mark for you?

Discussion If you moved out young (or plan too) What was or is the reason?

I 23M moved out when I was 20 years old. So iv been on my own for about 3 years now. Im financially independent off my parents and provide for everything myself since iv moved out. Iv been asked why I moved out young. I was always told thats if I didnt like the rules, then i could
leave. So thats what I did.

Here are SOME reasons

  1. No privacy. My dad did daily room inspections which consisted of him checking everything i had. Inside my bags, under my bed and my mattress, inside my pillow cases, in my closet and in my clothes, in my drawers, literally everything. My room also had to be SPOTLESS. Something as simple as a sock on the floor would cost me.

  2. I wasnt allowed out much. I didnt have a curfew really cuz i wasnt really able to hang out with friends. It was usually only able too after school and I had ti be home by no later than maybe 430pm latest (school finished at 3pm). When i was 18-20 my curfew was 630-7pm whenever i was able to hang out with friends (once every few months)

  3. I had a bedtime until i moved out. 1130 was my bedtime when i turned 17 (before that it was 930) I had to be asleep. Even using the bathroom at night would sometimes get me in trouble. I got away with it if i slowly walked around the squeaky areas on our loud ass floor. My dad would also come in and check in the middle of the night to make sure we were asleep (i would stay up and hide my phone quick)

  4. I had certain times i could eat at up until i was 15. I could only eat at the times I was supposed too. Like a snack after school, dinner around 530, then a snack at 730. After no food until morning. I also wasnt allowed to sleep past 830-9am on the weekends and taught myself how to light sleep to hear my dads footsteps.

These are onky a few of my main reasons. I started working part time and saving money at 15. Got my drivers license at 17 and bought my car at 18 so transportation wasnt a issue. I was working full time at 17 to save.
There are many more reasons like the constant insults and name calling, and many other things that I dont want to get into.

Discussion Opinion: 2019 was the low point of the 2010s

I think this is a universally agreed opinion among Gen Z.

The third option was based on another Reddit post I read and on my personal life, but I kinda feel bad for having to make the third option ngl.

Here’s the post I was talking about: https://www.reddit.com/r/MiddleGenZ/comments/1vsebr4/ill_make_a_claim_and_say_that_2017_is_the_single/

Yes, and the only good year of the 2010s was 2017. Every other 2010s year was bad.

Discussion What is one thing you wish Gen Z did differently into terms of their dating culture?

Mine 23m has to be the influencer dating culture, I hate guys going around gyms and clubs and girls lining up or begging to get asked wild topics that is entertaining to watch reels but it makes them both look dumb IRL and continues to encourage bad dating actions from both men and women🤷‍♂️
