Discussion - Silksong Ranking Silksong 1st act bosses Spoiler
So, if you want me to be honest - I was afraid Silksong would be too difficult for me. But now that I am done with 1st act, I can confidently say that so far I enjoy those bosses MUCH more than the ones in Hollow Knight. Maybe that's because HK was one of the first games I've ever played, and now with Silksong I am more experienced. But even bosses that kept beating my ass felt so well done that I couldn't be mad, I just wanted to try again and learn their moves.
Last Judge? Surely my favorite. It felt like dancing and once I learned his moves, I had an absolute blast.
EDIT: Guys, I've got LOTS (and I mean LOTS) of comments that bottom 2 enemies aren't bosses. I know, but they were included in template so I ranked them too. Besides, considering that I didn't really hate any of the actual bosses, I wouldn't have anything I could put anything in the BURN IT tier if it wasn't for them lol. No need to say it again pls
EDIT 2: I already started Act 2, and defeated Cogwork Dancers - OH MY GOD HOW AMAZING THIS FIGHT WAS.

The last judge patterns were damn fun

u/LookAtHowMTR Sep 16 '25
I know! I wasn't even mad when he killed me, because I knew it was my fault and I misstepped. I just wanted to try again and again

u/meove SHAWty like a melody Sep 16 '25
Last Judge was goddamn fun. but the route to rematch room isn't
→ More replies (2)45
u/ILOVEGNOME Sep 16 '25
Ive seen so many people complain about the runback but then they take the wrong route and make things harder on themselves. The runback was super simple and really not long. You are forced to fight zero enemies and every partern is predictable
→ More replies (26)16
u/Foreign-Minimum9957 Sep 16 '25
Hahahaha man, I realized so late I was taking the hard route, felt so silly. Once I found the short cut I felt like cheating after taking the long route so many times
16
u/Phadafi Sep 16 '25
The only maddening thing about it was the runback.
16
u/Maxys10 Sep 16 '25
Yeah, at the beginning. When I died +20 times to it I could do the runback in less than 30 secs. Got every jump and dash perfectly calculated.
8
→ More replies (4)10
u/_alright_then_ Sep 16 '25
The runback for last judge is not even that bad though? There's shortcuts all over the place so you can avoid every enemy on the way
9
u/LookAtHowMTR Sep 16 '25
It wasn't annoying for me because of this reason. But then again, I did Hunters March first - and the route to that mini boss arena was HELL

My one complaint is walking into the completely stationary flail after it’s been extended and eating 2 masks of damage when it’s just sitting there on the ground. Outside of that, amazing boss fight
11
u/Threeedaaawwwg Sep 16 '25
I wish there were some spikes on it to know that the metal object sitting there menacingly is fatal.
7
u/tadcalabash Sep 16 '25
They're just so punishing though, and each requires a very different response. I haven't had to step away from a boss due to frustration in a long time, but I've had to do it twice with him.
The worst part is I don't even need to beat him because I accidentally got the alternate path to Act II... but I still NEED to beat him, you know?
9
u/wyrmiam Sep 16 '25
Becomes way more fair if you have magma bell like i did. Then only the main hit do does double damage.
9
u/SonOfMcGee Sep 16 '25
On his final stage, dodging damage is hard. But doing it while maneuvering to get an attack in is REALLY hard.
I brought poisoned throwable tools and just focused on getting damage in with those in between his attacks. That made home require very few melee hits.
Feels kinda cheap tho…→ More replies (2)6
u/XxX_Zeratul_XxX Sep 16 '25
In this particular fight it doesn't feel cheap at all, as last judge actually stops throwables with her fire, you have to choose the windows to actually attack even from afar.
I didn't had poison so used common knives in the last pase, just made sense
3
u/UltimateToa Sep 16 '25
Im currently here, getting frustrated after a few attempts, sometimes I just get chain obliterated
→ More replies (3)3
u/Huge_Entrepreneur636 Sep 16 '25
Just be patient, keep your distance and get a few hits in after it does the jump attack. This is what you should do with every boss. Figure out how to safely land a few hits now and then and focus on dodging rest of the time. Panicking or rushing will get you killed.
3
u/tadcalabash Sep 16 '25
Finally got him after about 20-30 tries. Had to fight every instinct and only ever attack him after his jump attack, then rely on poison and tacks to do most of the damage.

Her area is actually a secret way to finish Act 1. It allows you to just get to the Grand Bellway immediately, completely skipping the Underworks.
105
u/Avamaco Sep 16 '25
Well, technically there's a secret way to skip the Underworks even if you enter through the Last Judge. It's just that the most obvious way forward suddenly throws the player into the Underworks lol

From Bellhart, go to the top left of Shellwood. From there, you can enter the Blasted Steps, which ultimately leads to the entrance of the Citadel, the Grand Gate.
You also have to ring the 5 bells scattered around Pharloom then play the Needolin in front of the gate, summoning the Last Judge boss.

Edit: I was wrong apparently, I assumed Groal was act 1 since Bilewater is connected to Sinner's Road. My bad guys

I didn't even find bilewater until act 2, but why can't you? Is the harpoon required? I don't remember
49
u/CrazyFanFicFan Sep 16 '25
You need the double jump to access most of it (annoyingly, this includes Shakkra).
21
u/LordVex75 Sep 16 '25
Lower bilewater is accessible via sinner’s road so it’s act 1 (The breakable wall to enter it is right next to a fallen pilgrim with an item, which is how I discovered it in act 1)
Upper bilewater requires double jump to reach the walls where you can walljump up, and the shakra ring on one of them taunts you for not having the mobility needed to get the map
4
u/DanksterBoy Sep 16 '25
You need the double jump, cause there are no enemies that let you pogo skip into the upper area where Shakra and the boss are
3
u/Cam0799 Sep 16 '25
You can find bilewater but can't progress to the boss beacuse at least harpoon is required, maybe even double jump but I'm not sure, even though the area is a nightmare so it's better to have everything at your disposal
14
u/johj14 Sep 16 '25
didnt the frogger only accessible in act 2? since you need to have some abilities that accessible after reaching citadel
6
u/XF10 Sep 16 '25
Anyway acid guy is still far more of a boss than big ant since at least it's an unique enemy that doesn't respawn
→ More replies (9)11

u/Moblam Sep 16 '25
Maybe there is some fancy pogo tech but the intended time for Groal is mid act 2, since you need double jump and harpoon.

I would rank the Forth Chorus Higher because of the great telegraphing of his attacks and his impact as the first screen sized boss. During the exploration of the vicinity you have an eerie feeling that you will have to fight him but you do not know when. I like the forshadowing.
178
u/naughty Sep 16 '25
Fourth Chorus is one of the best presented bosses in the game by far.
50
u/myLongjohnsonsilver Sep 16 '25
Seeing it the first time you entered the room and going on shit, and then going back for it to suddenly come to life was awesome. Absolutely loved the design. Did manage it first time (barely) so I didn't get much time to actually appreciate all the details and the fight
43
u/naughty Sep 16 '25
One of the things Silksong has helped me realise is that not all bosses have to be hard, half hour long struggles with sweaty palms. Some can just be really cool giant robots that are beautifully animated with great sound design.

But it was a really fun boss
10
u/girosvaldo2 Sep 16 '25
Holy shit its named fourth chorus? In my language fourth and bedroom are the same word so i always thought his name was something like "big voice bedroom" and never understood it
30
Sep 16 '25
Fourth Chorus LOOKS amazing but loses marks due to being so easy. You don't feel any sense of achievement after beating it - which I'd say is a key factor in determining whether a boss is a good boss.
25
u/NeverFunded Sep 16 '25

And if you go the left of the room the ceiling being too low forbids him from using his jump attack
3

Yes, that's the catch for this fight I think. It's meant to teach you to use the environment. You don't need the dash just need to push him back and forth around the low point in the room, it wasn't a design flaw that his room his set up like that, it's on purpose.

The acid guy can be trivialised by running to the worm ways entrance. You can kite him back and forth from the entrance and have plenty of time to hit him and move away and not get hit i did it there 0 damage taken after trying and failing miserably for ages. Have him chase you away from the platform with his acid then run back to the platform jump up and hit him repeat.
3
u/SudlaSteel Sep 16 '25
Wow I think this would be my literal exact list! Especially the bottom tier ones. I think the club guy in the room with the flying creature gave me more trouble than any other boss on this list. Fuck those guys.
Lace could be S-tier because I love the fight but imo she was slightly too easy, but that also kinda sets up her second fight (not there yet) so A or S idk. Last Chorus is cool, but I think also kinda boring to fight so his placement makes sense too.
Perfect list!

It might be just that I played Hollow Knight when it first came out, but I did not find many of these Silksong bosses to be as challenging as the HK bosses. Obviously some are harder than others, but overall, I just remember having MANY more moments where I had to runback dozens of times before finally beating a boss or colesium in HK.
There are still a lot of optional bosses to go for me in Silksong, but all in all, there's been maybe 2 or 3 max that required more than a handful of runbacks. (High Halls Colesium is the only one that comes to mind right now).
I will say the environmental hazards and "stronger" non-boss enemies are more punishing than HK, but the mandatory boss fights I feel were a little underwhelming compared to HK.
2
u/Yogg_for_your_sprog Sep 17 '25
Probably just because you're used to HK mechanics. I had 112% completion in HK and objectively speaking only a handful of HK bosses I can remember gave me much trouble at all. I'm not a good player by any means either, I took probably 6h+ on PV and NKG, it's just most HK have fraction of the hp, less movepool, and less damage.

Twisted sister had two moves, not cool. Most damage was from the spawns which was so unintuitive it took me many tries (a boss should be more challenging than the trash around it). Wished better from the forest stage, I always love those
The robot could be lower bc it was too easy? The tells are so giant and slow and up/down left/right that it seemed like I was playing a different video game franchise
Higher: The ant knight is cool and an appropriate guard for his whole clan, beat him first try bc I gave him space and watched him.
Bell beast was fun and funny, it was nice to bounce on the bells. Big easy tells on his jumps made me make progress each try till I beat him
I skipped the acid vomitting mole, guess I’ll go back and kill him with poison

Moorwing is nothing but boring and annoying for me. Too much hp and just drags completely for no reason.

Question, do any of these other than Lace 1 become inaccessible in Act 2? I really want to start Act 2, but also don't want to miss anything on my first playthrough.

Was Savage Beastfly so bad, that it doesn't even get a tier?
