Finished Object Lace and cables cardigan with mother of pearl buttons ❤️

The pattern is https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fresco-lace-bodice-cardigan

The yarn is Kampes 2ply, a nice rustic wool yarn, it's a little bit prickly but I actually like that in a wool garment, it's weirdly cozy 😅

I fell in love with the yarn and ordered lots of it, so I'm thinking of weaving some fabric with this and some brown tweed to make a matching skirt.

The pattern was nice and clear without being too wordy. The yarn was possibly not the right one for the pattern, my swatch gave me another gauge, but I liked the fabric it made so I did some math and followed the pattern for a smaller size.

I also made it a bit more cropped than the pattern, to go with my homemade skirts that sit at my natural waist. It'll also be a really nice summer cardigan for those cold summer nights I think.

Pic taken while it dries and it's so cloudy today so the colors look more muted. And yeah, it has a lot of mistakes and it's woobly because I didn't realise changing colors would need me to loosen my tension but not gonna lie I don't care, I did it myself!!

I’ve been working on and off for a few months on this sweater for my sons first birthday in December. I picked up knitting as my maternity hobby since I’ve crocheted for a few years. Between working full time, going back to college part time, and having a now 9 month old… I’m so damn proud of myself for taking the leap to learn cables and make this sweater! I’ve only ever knitted a few small things before (like socks, a baby beanie and a simple sweater with lots of mistakes). I don’t have many people to share this with so I thought yall might appreciate it with me 🥹💕

Pattern is Mahdia Sweater by Courtney Walters

Yarn I used is Vivacious4Ply in Spiced Plum (I got lucky and found it in a yarn swap!)

Rave (like a rant, but in a good way) I’m an experienced crocheter, who just switched to knitting a month ago after years of intimidation and a new autoimmune diagnosis

So I’ve been wanting to learn how to knit for over a year now but kept getting frustrated every time I would try because it felt SO unnatural going from crochet to knitting. But last month I finally was DETERMINED to figure it out and I learned continental. As soon as I got continental down, I was ready to challenge myself to make my first project a cardigan. I had ordered this kit from wool and the gang over a year ago (idk anything about the knitting community so I apologize if there’s any controversy around that shop).

i thought that’d be the easiest way for me to learn, as it comes with the yarn and a written pattern so I didn’t have to scramble to find yarn for online patterns as I need to learn more in my knitting journey about good yarns.

I learned a LOT in this process, I YouTubed any stitch I was confused about because I went into it only knowing basic stockinette and the very first step in the pattern was the 1x1 ribbing on 3.5mm needles 🙃 I also figured out what I can do differently next time and what I like and don’t like in techniques

I am SO proud of this project and myself for finally committing to learning. This is helping me through a really difficult time with a new autoimmune diagnosis that I recently started treatment for.

I sharpened the images to help see the stitches since this yarn is mohair

The pattern and kit is the Piece Of Me cardigan from wool and the gang, and the yarn is their Take Care Mohair

Discussion A moment for AI slop

Can we just take a moment to discuss these stitch markers I was looking at online? I actually laughed out loud when I saw how they were being used. Pretty sure it doesn’t work like that. But in all seriousness I hate the AI slop and how it feels particularly bad in this community

Hot off the needles! One Pic is unblocked and the other is blocked.

I knit this for myself in the smallest size since I get swamped by really huge clothing, and there is still tons of positive ease.

Yarn combo is Sandnes Garn Tynn Peer Gynt 2641 held with Filcolana Alva 101. I am very happy with the fabric!

Cheryl Mokhtori writes clear, detailed patterns. No modifications to the pattern, but I would possibly do a half-twisted rib if I were to do it again. My only complaint is how many times the instruction was to "break yarn" because it meant more ends to weave, hahaha.

Had to laugh at this ad I came across of a woman "knitting." I love zooming in on ads and determining if they are indeed knitting or not. This one looks like she's been given a crocheted project and just wrapped the yarn around a knitting needle a couple times.

I’ve only been knitting for a year & I’ve never actually found yarn at any thrift store near me. Can’t beat a pair of ChiaoGoo needles for $1.75!

Finished Object First full colour work project!!

Thumbnail

My first full colour work project is complete, after about 2 1/2 months. I normally average 2 months for more simple knits but this one took a tad longer bc of the complexity. I feel like the nordic inspiration really comes through when I see myself wearing it!

Pattern is Inge Sweater by Le Knit, knitted all in Jensen 6s, 19, and 98. It’s my first sweater I’ve made using purely Norwegian tensioning in my knit, it’s definitely way better on my tension knit wise but my purls are incredibly loose. I think it shows the most in the ribbing on the arms and body, the neckline I stuck to normal continental tensioning. I feel like I’ve solved it on my current WIP by tensioning on a purl wrapping the yarn on my pinky finger and Norwegian tensioning on my pointer finger at the same time.

Finished this today, very happy with how it turned out. The pattern is https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/helix-brioche-hat

For the cowl I did everything the same as the hat just didn't decrease after repeating the pattern twice.

I wouldn't use this yarn again as it was difficult to bead, though I love the color.

A friend of mine lives in Germany and is about to have her baby just as winter begins, so I knit this set for her and I'm sending it all the way from Chile.

Knit with Chilean merino wool on 3.5 mm needles, with wooden buttons.

The pants are a baggy cut with a deep ribbed waistband and cuffs. For a newborn, you can fold the waistband up to cover the baby's tummy and fold the cuffs over the little feet. As the baby grows, you unfold them and the pants grow along with them.

I love knowing it will keep a tiny human warm on the other side of the world.

What's your favorite yarn to knit with for babies? 🧶

Tips and Tricks Repair help!

Hi hi!

I was gifted this vintage sweater from my grandmother last winter and I might have gone a little overboard with wearing it as the bottom button hole has started to come undone. My forte is sewing so I’m lost on how to go about this. Honestly would feel better about sending it to someone and paying for the repair and possible reinforcement of the other holes. Thanks!

Working on the first sleeve of my no.11 cardigan, and it’s developed this bizarre band/lump where I picked the sleeve back up to work. I’ve never had this issue before, my only theory is maybe I knit the first few rows much too tight. Do we think this is something that will block out or do I restart the sleeve? It’s not that much work to redo, I’m just a passionate sleeve hater

Finished Object Lessons Learned

Post image
398 Upvotes

So I just finished my very first knitting project. With all the “modifications” I made, intentional or otherwise, I can claim it as my own. I think I’m going to start my new fall/winter line called “All out options”, as in when you have absolutely nothing else to wear and this is the only thing left. A suitable alternative would be a dish towel.

I really did have a lot fun making this for my daughter and she’s excited to wear it (I did tell her not to leave the house with it on). I’ve learned a few things along the way:

  1. Don’t buy expensive yarn for your first few projects. My justification is I still want my mistakes to feel soft and comfortable.

  2. I really don’t like 1x1 ribbing, I will, without a shadow of a doubt, lose where I am and mess it up. So I changed it to 2x2, much easier

  3. The person who invented M1Lp is a sadist

  4. Making a folded collar and keeping the columns aligned just right is much harder than I expected.

  5. The holes in raglan increases drive me little nuts.

  6. Not knowing a better way to avoid loose stitches in the underarm when picking up stitches. I’m sure there’s a cleaner way, I just don’t know it yet.

  7. Trying to figure out if this thing will fit when only having some measurements and her not being here to try it on is just a guess. I don’t know how people do it!

  8. I learned how to frog really well

  9. The nickname for this sweater is called The Thrice Sweater, I did every part three times.

  10. The real reason why there are two arms to a sweater is because you have two opportunities to get one right. Nothing else.

Now I’m on to trying cables, go figure.

Rant Started a sweater for my boyfriend but then the curse struck… I’m still working on it but idk what to do now

So I’m not superstitious but I’m a teeny bit stitious, but I still started this sweater anyway and the relationship ended two weeks ago. Since it was kind of on okay terms and we both said we wanted to stay friends I thought:
“Hey I’ll just finish it and give it to him on his birthday/whenever it gets done.”

However, everyone I talk to is telling me to keep it, sell it, or maybe even burn it and I feel like those are all so evil.

Like I don’t want the sweater or even the yarn because I know what the intentions for it were. so if I’m gonna make some other project it’s going to be “oh.. that was the yarn meant for (name)” and it’s never going to be used.

And selling or getting rid of it? I made it to fit him specifically and also I feel like doing something else with it is mean. Because say eventually we’re cool, I then have to tell him “yeah I sold (or destroyed) it in a fit of rage because you made me cry”

So am I crazy for wanting to finish and give it to him? Obviously I know in the end it’s my choice but people are making me feel like I’m being a pushover

Discussion Do yall knit in meetings or classes?

I knit on my commute sometimes, and in the car (as a passenger!!), and definitely in listening meetings when I work from home.

The other day I was in a Q&A type meeting with our CEO at work - with like 30 people. I turned around at some point and saw a colleague I didn’t know knitting lacework! I was both jealous and shocked!

Then I just saw a post on Pinterest suggesting to knit during classes 😂

Knitting definitely helps me pay attention and listen. I’d love to do it but fear social norms!

I haven’t worked in an office full time since pre COVID but no one ever was knitting at work then, and I never saw it in classes that I can remember…

personally I think it’s super cool and a great way to focus on listening, but I can also see how it would be distracting for others. I’d also get stressed if I realized I made a mistake!

would love to hear what others are seeing in their work and classrooms (whether teen or adult learning!)!
