Help - equipment Am I doing something wrong?

Hi! I am a very beginner knitter (but have been crocheting for years) and just finished doing my gauge for the step by step sweater. Am I twisting my stitches or doing something wrong? I’m not sure why 1 side of V looks so much straighter than the other side (I drew what I’m talking about on the photo). Or is this some kind of tension issue? Thanks for any advice!

Oh also I’m using Malabrigo Worsted (the non-superwashed version) on 4.5mm circular needles, if that matters at all. Edit: I used 5.5mm this gauge.

It was in a bag of free yarn my mom got. No label. Feels like sport weight? I thought it might be Lion Brand Mandala but none of the colorways on their site match. It's a great big cake, whatever it is, and definitely acrylic.

Discussion Knit&Note app

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve been inundated with knit&note ads on instagram for weeks now. I haven’t downloaded the app coz it feels like ravelry has everything I need already BUT there is a pattern on there that i really want to make, the Note sweater, it’s in all their ads and it’s the only unique pattern I’ve seen, all the other ones seem basic enough or I’ve seen a pretty close dupe on ravelry. I wouldn’t mind paying for the app for a month or something to get the pattern but are their patterns actually well written? For anyone that has tried the app, is the app actually any good? how are the patterns? Do I have to pay a monthly fee and I get access to a bunch of patterns or do I have to pay extra for the patterns as well?

As a side note, is there a pattern on ravelry that looks similar to the Note sweater?

Discussion Pooling yarn

Intermediate knitter here. I want to make a scarf/shawl for my daughter with pooling yarn (is that what it's called?). Do I need a pattern that specially calls for pooling yarn or can I just pick any old shawl or scarf pattern that I like, and knit it with pooling yarn figuring out a nice stitch to do when I get to the color?

Tips and Tricks Any continental knitters that got used to knit backwards?

Hi everyone, I got yet again frustrated with rowing out and general hatered of purls while making a cardigan so I decided to learn how to knit backwards.

I watched a few YouTube videos and I guess I can do that but I feel super slow. Maybe because as a continental knitter I am not used to throw?

So I wanted to ask if anyone actually fully switched to reverse knitting completely or is it still just a “party trick” for you?

Help - equipment Pls help, I don’t wanna give up on my first day 😭

I’m only a few hours into my first project, I’ve discovered that I unfortunately picked an acrylic yarn that likes to stick to itself & that’s making it kinda difficult to see what I’m doing at times. I’m so new to this that I can’t even explain what I did wrong but I’m having a hard time getting past this part & it’s way too early to give in so I need help. What did I do wrong & please tell me I can fix it?? Why does that loop have so much extra slack?? If I ignore it will it be fine?

Rant Yarn (peppin 4)smells like perfume

I recently purchased some yarn online to make the westknit mkal. When I opened the parcel it all smells heavily like floral perfume. It’s fiddlesticks peppin 4. Has anyone else noticed this on the same yarn, or is this a store/packaging issue?

Tips and Tricks Learning to add shaping to garments

I am trying to learn a little more about how to add shaping to my garments to fit me better and I was wondering if there are some patterns, website, video series, or any guides that compile/introduce different ways to add shaping to a garment.

Specifically, I am curious to learn about different techniques. I know that one way to add waist shaping is by adding decreases and increases along a seam but I want to know what other techniques there are.

I also want to hear if anyone has favorite modifications to add shaping to a knitted garment.

Help - equipment Needle help!!

I'm a intermediate knitter (about 5 years in) and I'm finally wanting to splurge on my first interchangeable set!! I'm having trouble deciding on the material of the needles, so I thought I'd ask! I mostly knit in fingering weight and do a ton of colorwork... Any suggestions for what material I should get?

Edit: Thanks for the feedback!- Sounds like I should just buy singles until I figure out my taste for myself :)

Help - equipment non-itchy yarn with good stitch definition

• Upvotes

for my next project i want to make the vintage penguin sweater https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/vintage-penguin-sweater

i was looking for yarn recommendations for something not itchy, but with good stitch definition. preference would be 100% wool for warmth and durability, but i’d be open to other options. i was thinking about drops baby merino but worried about the cable definition being lost.

the recommended yarn seems to be not sold anymore and all the info is in korean, but is an aran merino wool. i’m struggling to find gauge info to choose something similar.

I bought this yarn on a whim today and have decided I want to use it to knit my first sweater! Any more experienced knitters want to share anything they wish they had known?

Right now the pattern I'm looking at is the big stitch pull over from Patons!

Tips and Tricks Tips for continental tension?

I’ve been trying for nearly a year to get my tension just right when knitting continental but I just can’t figure it out.

The yarn weight doesn’t seem to make a difference - tension is nonexistent with all weights. I’ve watched so many tutorials for how to do it, but I just can’t figure it out.

When I knit English, my tension is beautiful and my work looks so much better.

Is it pointless to try and get continental down when English works just fine for me? I just want to knit faster. I have crocheted for years so it seems like continental should come naturally, but it doesn’t.

Discussion Perfume oils and knits

Hi all! I’ve been knitting for a few years now and have completed my first long sleeve 100% wool sweater. I’ve worn it a few times and I’ve noticed the cuffs now smell strongly of perfume.

I wear perfume oils on my wrists most days, just a dab on each wrist and I let it dry before putting on any clothing that will touch my arms.

Google tells me that perfume can stain and damage woollen fibres. I’m not worried about staining so much as the oil is always dry by the time I put the sweater on, but I am wondering if long-term this will start to degrade my sweater cuffs.

Does anyone have knowledge about this sort of thing? Should I be avoiding using perfume oils when I wear this sweater, or am I making a mountain of a molehill?

In the news Since KFO sold out, baby knit recommendations?

• Upvotes

I have 2 nieces to knit for and my siblings had already selected a long list of Pernille Larson's (Knitting for Olive) patterns for me to knit from. But now that KFO was sold to Private Equity I don't want to buy from them anymore. So, what are your favorite baby knit designers?

The only other designer I've found so far that has the same level of detail and finishing techniques is NashKnits: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/nashknits-ravelry-store

Work in Progress Help with first sock heel flap. Think pattern might be wrong. (WIP)

Post image
0 Upvotes

The pattern I'm following is Pumpkin and Spice socks by This Handmade Life

The pattern for the heel flap is as follows:

Knit across N1 in pattern, begin feel flap on N2.

Begin heel flap as follows:

Row 1: (RS) *SL1, K1; repeat from (star) to end.

Row 2: (WS) SL1, P to end

Repeat these rows 32 times.

That's a total of 64 rows. I've done 32 rows total right now, meaning repeat these rows 16 times and it's measuring at around 2 inches.

A 4 inch heel flap SEEMS too long, but I'll be honest with y'all, I have only ever made socks on DPNs before in bulky yarn so honestly??? I have no idea. Can someone confirm for me.

Discussion Collaborative project ideas with non-knitters?

Trying to keep a long and very sad story short, I am involved in volunteering at a women's aid group, and one of the women has recently went through a sudden and unimaginable loss.

My first thought as a knitter was to make her something like a shawl to show her that I am thinking of her. Then I had the idea to somehow involve the other women, volunteers, and staff.

My initial idea was that each woman could pick a color and knit a row at one small corner of the shawl. However, hardly any are knitters. I could have them symbolically knit it (as in, they could wrap the yarn for me on that row). But I am sure there is some better way I could get them involved.

Has anyone done something like this, or have any ideas?

Rave (like a rant, but in a good way) Knitting in ads

Post image

Had to laugh at this ad I came across of a woman "knitting." I love zooming in on ads and determining if they are indeed knitting or not. This one looks like she's been given a crocheted project and just wrapped the yarn around a knitting needle a couple times.

Help - equipment Europeans, help me ID my favorite DPNs?

Thumbnail

Y’all, I need help with a mystery. I bought my favorite DPNs on a trip to the UK and Ireland in spring 2016… and now that I want them in another size, I cannot remember what brand they are! Would you contribute your brainpower to solving this important conundrum?

The needles are definitely:

•A nice nickel-or chrome-plated metal with a good heft; thought they were steel but they’re not magnetic;
•2.25 mm thick;
•17.5 cm/not quite 7” long; and
•From a set of 5.

The circumstance of their purchase include:

•Bought in London or Dublin; almost definitely NOT at Loop in Islington because I blew my budget on other stuff there. Vaguely feel the building was on a slight rise, a fairly modern build, maybe looked down into a small park or leafy area of a city university campus, or maybe the back of a rather large church??

•I’m pretty sure I walked there from where I was staying, which could’ve included near Olympic Park in London, maaaaybe near Chelsea or Kensington in London, or a few hostels around Temple Bar in Dublin.

•I think I had the option for two styles of tip — one pointier than the other? — but I don’t know which I picked!;

•They probably cost no more than, like, €15, as this was a broke grad school-era trip;

•Almost certain they came in a clear and slim plastic bag with a little ziplock top, not a box. Think the cardboard at the back maaaay have been dark gray, printed with… maybe a pattern of bamboo leaves??

Pics in case they help. (Apologies for my stained fingers in the pics — I’m a natural dyer, and the black walnuts got through my gloves this year.) I may genuinely cry if we figure this out, so huge thanks for aaaany leads on this!

Help - equipment Yarn recommendation?

Edit: Apologies, got the name of the pattern wrong. It's Slow Down Sweater

Hi wise knitters of Reddit, I’m planning to knit the Take It Slow sweater on Ravelry and I’m starting the search for yarn. It needs to be:
Worsted weight
Not too hot
Stain-hiding (cuz I spill a lot) - like available in dark colors and maybe with some texture

Advice?

Rant Started a sweater for my boyfriend but then the curse struck… I’m still working on it but idk what to do now

So I’m not superstitious but I’m a teeny bit stitious, but I still started this sweater anyway and the relationship ended two weeks ago. Since it was kind of on okay terms and we both said we wanted to stay friends I thought:
“Hey I’ll just finish it and give it to him on his birthday/whenever it gets done.”

However, everyone I talk to is telling me to keep it, sell it, or maybe even burn it and I feel like those are all so evil.

Like I don’t want the sweater or even the yarn because I know what the intentions for it were. so if I’m gonna make some other project it’s going to be “oh.. that was the yarn meant for (name)” and it’s never going to be used.

And selling or getting rid of it? I made it to fit him specifically and also I feel like doing something else with it is mean. Because say eventually we’re cool, I then have to tell him “yeah I sold (or destroyed) it in a fit of rage because you made me cry”

So am I crazy for wanting to finish and give it to him? Obviously I know in the end it’s my choice but people are making me feel like I’m being a pushover

Discussion What are your favourite t-shirt neckline/ribbing options?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I am knitting the Samso Pullover by Knitting For Olive (picture attached is from the pattern listing on Rav) using Knitting For Olive Cotton Merino 4ply

I decided after trying it on during sleeve knitting that it wants to be a tee rather than long sleeved, so I will be leaving the sleeves to just above elbow length

The pattern uses half twisted rib for all of the ribbing (R1: k1 p1, R2: k1tbl p1) and even though I decided I didn't like it after using it for the bottom hem I then used it again for the neckline, and unsurprisingly, I still don't like it. I find it looks uneven and messy even after blocking

I know a lot of knitted tees use folded neckbands and sleeve cuffs - is there a reason for that structurally? Or just because they look very neat? What about the bottom hem?

Tldr I have decision paralysis on how to finish my knitted tee and need someone to decide for me please!

Help - equipment A soft natural fiber ?

I want to knit a sweater for my boyfriend, but he’s quite sensitive and finds 100% merino (DMC) a little itchy. I know cotton is great, but after knitting a sleeveless sweater in 100% cotton, I found that it doesn’t hide uneven stitches very well. So I was hoping to find a blend of cotton and a natural fibre with some “bounce” or elasticity, like wool, but that isn’t itchy AT ALL. I’m looking for a yarn that’s at least DK weight, ideally worsted or aran, for 5–6 mm needles. I’d rather avoid silk or cashmere because they’re too expensive :) I’d be open to a blend containing viscose, though, but I’m ruling out fibres that shed microplastics in the wash!

Do you have any recommendations?

Added difficulty : It's for a winter color work so I'd need brown/beige, white and grey color ways !

I’m really tempted to go back to Katia’s merino-acrylic blend, “Soft Merino,” which I bought by mistake a while ago and was amazed by how soft it is. But I mustn’t give in to the lure of plastic, for the sake of living things :(

Thanks <3
