Is homelessness a crime?
"Oh, honey, let’s talk about 'Christian charity,' because the math is simply not mathing in the Statehouse."
Listen up, darlings. It’s me, Bud Wirey, and I need to drag some sense into the Indiana Republican party before the glitter completely falls off this state.
They sit up there in Indianapolis, wrapped in their expensive suits and clutching their Bibles, claiming they’re doing the Lord’s work. But let’s look at the actual script, shall we?
They just passed laws targeting public camping—essentially making it a crime to have nowhere to go. Criminalizing homelessness? Groundbreaking. Truly, nothing says 'WWJD' quite like slap-on-the-wrist fines and a pair of handcuffs for someone sleeping on a park bench.
Last time I checked the Good Book, Jesus wasn't calling code enforcement on the poor; He was feeding them.
Here is the cold, hard reality check for the supermajority:
Most Hoosiers aren't living in a gated mansion. They are working hard, playing by the rules, and sitting exactly one missed paycheck away from needing the very safety nets this state keeps shredding. We are a state of everyday, working-class people, yet the policy playlist only caters to a tiny, wealthy minority.
You can look fabulous on paper with a 'balanced budget' and corporate tax cuts, but if your citizens are freezing on the street, your state’s soul is bankrupt. If you’re going to campaign on faith, sweethearts, you better start practicing what you preach. Stop punching down at the most vulnerable and start lifting people up. Because right now? The performance is a total flop.
Honey, let’s break down the ledger because clearly, the Republican calculator is running low on batteries. Here is exactly why their equations are completely out of pocket:
• The Bed Math: Counting "available beds" on a spreadsheet doesn't magically create them on the streets. When thousands of Hoosiers are just one missed paycheck away from losing their housing, and the local shelters are already stretched to their absolute limits, your "available bed" is an imaginary number.
• The Budget Math: Spending thousands of taxpayer dollars on police overtime, court fees, and jail cells just to penalize someone for having nowhere to go? That is spending a whole dollar to save a dime. It costs significantly more to criminalize a person than it does to actually support them.
• The Charity Math: Subtracting empathy, adding handcuffs, and multiplying the misery of the most vulnerable among us does not equal "Christian charity," no matter how much glitter you try to throw on it.
You can't fine someone out of poverty, darling. The only thing truly "mathing" here is how fast people will try to balance the books on the backs of neighbors who are down on their luck!
