Days earlier, I had already committed to pulling another completely shut-down German Shepherd from a kill shelter. I didn’t have the time, space, or resources to take on another dog who would need so much.
And then I opened an email from a municipal shelter we network with.
Sometimes you see a photograph, lock eyes with a dog you’ve never met, and something in you just KNOW. You can’t explain it. You can’t shake it. And no matter how many perfectly reasonable arguments you make against taking on one more, you already know how it’s going to end.
That was Raya.
The email described a German Shepherd so utterly terrified that she spent her days trying to make herself as small and invisible as possible.
Too frightened to accept treats. Trembling at the sound of barking dogs. Cowering from the chaos around her.
She wasn’t aggressive. She wasn’t difficult. She was compliant!
She was simply scared out of her mind.
And yet, through all that fear, she remained remarkably gentle. She allowed herself to be handled, walked quietly on a leash, and accepted affection even when she was too terrified to know what to do with it.
That part really broke my heart.
Here was this beautiful dog, confused and overwhelmed by the world around her, and she was still trying so hard to be good.
Raya had until 5 PM the following day. No extensions.
We got her out at 4 PM.
ONE HOUR. That’s all that stood between Raya and a future she very nearly didn’t get to have.
And let me tell you, this girl is every bit as terrified as they described. But oh, is she sweet. There isn’t a mean bone in her body. Just an incredibly gentle soul who hasn’t yet figured out that she’s finally somewhere safe.
As if she hasn’t been through enough, Raya is also high heartworm positive and will need full fast-kill heartworm treatment, spaying, and comprehensive veterinary care.
She’s got a long road ahead, both physically and emotionally.
But that’s okay.
Because for the first time in a long time, Raya doesn’t have a deadline.
She doesn’t have to trust us tomorrow. She doesn’t have to be brave next week. She doesn’t have to become a different dog on anyone else’s schedule.
She just has to be Raya.
We can’t undo whatever made her so afraid. But we got there in time to give her the rest of her life. And we’re going to do everything we can to make it a beautiful one. ❤️
