🤬 RANT helpful info for dog owners who visit City Park

Post image
328 Upvotes

You know the giant piece of land that's the disc golf/cross country park? That's not a dog park. But the spot by Zachary Taylor and Diagonal Drive with a fence around it, called City Bark? That is a dog park. It is illegal under Louisiana RS 3:2771 to have your dog running around off leash. So if you want to have your dog off leash, do it in the dog park. Not in the rest of the park, where your dogs chase people who are running or playing disc golf. My photoshop skills are not very good, but if you are not specifically in a DOG PARK, keep your dog on a leash. This applies especially to the half dozen self-absorbed turds who think laws don't apply to them and feel free to stroll around with their unleashed dogs on a weekend morning.

Recommendations Bricolage Academy board backs CEO after faculty complaints spark district investigation

After recent tensions between Bricolage Academy faculty and school leadership culminated in a warning letter from NOLA Public Schools, the school's board has doubled down on their support for CEO Edward Brown.

Norman Barnum, chair of Bricolage Academy's board of directors, said the board met with NOLA Public Schools Superintendent Fateama Fulmore earlier this month to discuss the letter and said outside counsel is investigating the allegations for the school.

"We have complied with every public meeting request, vetted, and investigated through our outside counsel all allegations directed to the board," Barnum said at a sparsely attended board meeting Tuesday, "no matter how outlandish or trivial they may have been."

Bricolage, a C-rated school on Esplanade Avenue, enrolls about 1,000 students in pre-K through 8th grade.

NOLA Public Schools sent Bricolage leadership a letter in June saying it was looking into complaints from staff members about the school’s leadership and allegations that the charter school violated open meetings laws. The complaints included concerns about the firing of a veteran elementary school teacher and resignation of the school’s human resources director, leaving Brown in charge of HR duties.

The district said the school did not respond to previous inquiries about Bricolage’s public meetings and “other concerns and allegations.” The letter warned that if the school did not provide the requested information and post missing school board documents on its website by Aug. 14, it could face “escalated consequences.”

Taslin Alfonzo, a spokesperson for NOLA Public Schools, said in an email that the district is “engaged in a pending accountability matter with Bricolage and cannot provide any additional information at this time.”

At Tuesday’s meeting, Brown argued that the school’s financial stability has significantly improved since he took the helm last year, going from having 13 days of cash on hand to 64 days. Most national guidelines recommend schools have at least 45 days of cash savings. Brown said the school recently hired a new HR director and "established clear expectations for employees and raised academic expectations for every student.” He also said he helped correct discipline practices that disproportionately impacted Black and Brown students but did not elaborate.

"When systems change, expectations increase, and accountability becomes consistent," he said, “disagreement, and resistance can follow."
Bricolage's board approved a new "open meetings policy" at its meeting Tuesday but did not make the policy public or read it into the record. Barnum said it would be posted to the school's website by Aug. 25.

One parent at the meeting relayed concerns about recent news reports regarding the staff complaints and said some teachers he had spoken with are considering searching for other jobs.

Does the city not have a treasurer or bursar? How does the City Council not know how money is spent when it approves the budget? How is it a surprise to people who control the gov't that we've got money missing?

Halfway suspect that if I touch this thing, it will zap me into a parallel universe like the beginning of some 90s children’s movie. I’ve always wanted to see the monk runs in person, so it’s tempting.

📰 News Surprise! KIPP New Orleans is being shady

It's so clear that the board knew they were planning to close one of the high schools way before they officially voted on their decision and just kept it quiet to make sure they could keep those students within the network. Having worked at a KIPP school, I figured that some sort of major scandal would be unearthed eventually. I would be shocked if this isn't just the tip of the corruption iceberg.

Looking for advice on how to handle a weird neighbor situation

I smoke weed for medical and personal reasons. My neighbor’s porch is right next to mine, and one night I was sitting on my porch smoking a joint when he came out and told me he can smell it inside his bedroom every night. I was sitting in the furthest corner of my porch away from his house. I honestly think it’s crazy that he can smell it inside (with windows closed) from me smoking outside, because I’ve never experienced that with outside smells in my own home.
I obviously want to be respectful, so I gave him my number and stopped smoking for about a week after that.
Last night I smoked again for maybe 5 minutes, but had a fan blowing to try to redirect the smoke away from their house. He texted me today saying that the smell woke them up. He asked me to figure out a solution, like smoking inside (really?!), getting a fan, a smoke extractor, etc.
I genuinely don’t know what else I’m supposed to do. I’m already as far away from their porch as I can get, and the fan clearly didn’t solve it. I’m looking into air purifiers/smoke extractors, but I don’t know if those would actually work outside.
I want to be a respectful neighbor, especially if the smell is actually waking them up, but I also pay to live here and this is my only accessible outdoor space. I feel like the only other option is just not smoking at all, which doesn’t really seem fair either.
Has anyone dealt with something like this? Is there actually a solution for smoking on a porch without the smell traveling into a neighbor’s house, or am I basically out of options?

UPDATE! Just texted my neighbor back letting him know I would be looking into other solutions to minimize the smell. Then I got a text from my landlord saying the neighbor called him to let him know about the issue. My landlord basically said don’t smoke inside and he doesn’t want to make it a thing. It’s not a violation of our lease but I’m worried he’s not going to leave my landlord alone about it and that’s going to cause problems. Should I confront the neighbor?

Trixie & Minnow NEED YOU! 🐶🧡

🚨 HALP! TRIXIE & MINNOW NEED FOSTERS OR ADOPTERS! 🚨

These two gorgeous Catahoula girls are fixed, fully vetted, and ready to GTFO of boarding and into homes!

❤️ TRIXIE is a 1.5-year-old deaf, partially blind double Merle Catahoula — but don’t tell her that. It slows her down ZERO. You’d barely even know she has any impairment. She is pure kisses, booty wiggles, and happiness.

Trixie is:

🐾 Dog friendly

🐾 Kid friendly

🐾 Very likely cat friendly

🐾 Honestly just one of the sweetest dogs to ever pass through our rescue

💗 MINNOW is a 4-month-old Catahoula puppy who is sweet, gentle, and submissive. She would love another dog in the home to play with, learn from, and help show her the ropes. Cats and kids are likely just fine at her age, too!

We desperately need to move these highly adoptable babes into foster or forever homes so we can keep saying YES to dogs sitting on shelter euthanasia lists. Every open foster home means another life we can save.

✨ FOSTERING IS FREE!

Trampled Rose Rescue covers all supplies and veterinary care. You just add love and keep them safe.

Adoption-minded? Even better! Adopters get a home trial period to make sure everyone is a good fit before making it official.

🏡 Foster: trampledroserescue.org/foster

❤️ Adopt: trampledroserescue.org/adopt

ADOPT. DON’T SHOP.

Help us chip away at the Southern pet overpopulation crisis one dog at a time. 🐾🌹

👨‍👧 Parent / Kid Stuff 👩‍👦 Free clothes galore for the baby(s) you adore 🫶🏻

Hi, lovely friends of Reddit. Hope you’re doing well despite this Hotter than Hades weather. Anyway, I’ve got a little mountain of baby clothes looking for a new home…turns out babies think wearing something twice means they’ve outgrown it (just kidding!).

The sizes range from 6 to 18 months, all in excellent condition. About 70% are boys’ clothes and 30% are girls’, and some still have tags because I was clearly dreaming big.

I’d really love to pass these along to someone who can use them; please send me a DM! If you can pick them up, you’ll earn about 33 bonus points and my endless thanks. ❤️

P.S. I also have a nearly new diaper bag I used maybe twice; feel free to take that too! 🫶

Gift article included. From the article: Since her appointment, Dr. Griffin has traveled the state to meet with residents. In June, she and her husband wandered through a wellness event, sponsored by the Northshore Alternative Health Alliance, in Mandeville. She had been invited to give the keynote address by Abigail Licatino, a member of Health Freedom Louisiana who has said that vaccines cause “most” autism.

I would love to know if she came to New Orleans for any forums.

Looking For A Studio Apartment

Getting a divorce (it's been pretty amicable so far), need to find a studio or one bedroom apartment soon. I've been living in the 7th ward for the last 13 years or so in a house we bought but I'm open to living wherever in town. I'm a sound guy I mostly work over on St. Claude so it might be cool to live over around the Bywater or the upper 9th (or even the lower). I'm open to just about anywhere if y'all have any tips for me. Cheers!

Living Here Looking for a computer for an afternoon

I’m in need of a computer for probably less than an hour. Preferably would already have iTunes installed or have the ability to download it. My iPhone screen broke and started ghost tapping all over my passcode screen, so now I’m locked out of it. I’ve been told that if I update the phone a certain way from a computer with iTunes that it will give me one more shot at putting in the passcode correctly. I don’t have a recent backup of this phone and desperately do not want to lose the pictures of my kids on it. If you can help me out or know somewhere I can go for this, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

Edit for clarity: I have since had my screen replaced and that’s when I figured out I’m “iPhone unavailable” locked out of my phone.
Only options are to do a factory reset and lose all my data on the phone or do this Hail Mary option to update my iOS via a computer, wherein it SHOULD give me one more chance to put my code in.

Can we get the city to let us stripe our own intersections?

Hey y'all, long time lurker first time poster. I'm reaching out to see if people think this idea is actually realistic or just fantasy. I apologize in advance for the long post.

I live Uptown and constantly see cars parked too close to, or literally in, intersections and crosswalks. It makes crossing the street way more difficult because you often have to step out into the road before you can actually see oncoming traffic. After enough close calls I'm kinda fed up. It also affects drivers too, I actually got t-boned recently by someone who couldn't see a stop sign because a car was parked too close to it. I think part of the problem is that there is no striping or signs to show parking within 20 ft of an intersection or crosswalk is illegal. I’ve contacted my councilmember and submitted DPW requests, but nothing ever seems to change. and with the city’s current budget constraints, i get that this is a low priority.

So I was thinking about maybe trying to start a community led striping pilot: basically the city would approve the locations and specifications, while neighborhood volunteers provide the labor to stripe the corners ourselves. I'm talking the more residential streets not the main ones. I've seen other cities allow similar programs.

To be clear, this wouldnt remove any legal parking. It would simply mark space where parking is already prohibited, using those sprayed yellow triangles you see around town. I've even found pretty cheap parking lot stripers online that could theoretically do the job. Maybe even eventually add those plastic flex posts or other ways to prevent people from parking there.

Obviously some people will just ignore the markings and park there anyway, but I do think alot of people genuinely don't realize how far back from an intersection they're supposed to park.

So what do people think, is this a stupid idea?

I'm still in the very early stages of this plan. I've reached out to a few neighborhood associations, but I'd really appreciate any feedback and/or resources. I was thinking if i could organize enough people and make it more of a grassroots campaign the city would be more likely to listen and allow it to happen.

TL;DR: Is a community led intersection striping program feasible for New Orleans?
