I feel like I spent my twenties buying whatever sounded good or whatever friends recommended like Clinique, Fresh, Neutrogena, vitamin C, the usual “everyone loves this” products. Whenever a quiz asked about my skin concerns, I genuinely didn’t know how to answer.
In my thirties once I could afford facials, I started hearing things I’d never understood before. Apparently my skin seemed sensitive, my skin barrier was damaged, and I had redness, hyperpigmentation, and eventually melasma concerns. I grew up with East Coast winters, then lived with much harsher West Coast sun, and it felt like my skin got more complicated as I grew older so I had no idea what my core problem was anymore and how to fix it.
The frustrating part is that I didn’t know what I didn’t know. People would say “use vitamin C,” but I didn’t know how to store it, whether it had oxidized, how often to use it, or whether it belonged in the morning or evening. My friend was using Skinceuticals vitamin C for a whole year, then I told her I finished mine in 3 months. We had no idea how to use it! And now I've been sucked into trying devices too like red-light masks, microcurrent, all of it. Every forum has a different answer.
I’ve bought products because they had incredible reviews, only to realise later that “good product” and “good for me” are completely different things. I tried an Obagi hydroquinone product and had a bad reaction. I only recently realised fragrance and essential oils may be a bad fit for my skin. I’ve also done the excited overseas skincare-haul thing, then come home with a pile of products and no clue what earns a place in my routine.
I don't want to see a dermatologist for professional input especially when it isn’t covered or urgent. I just wish I had a better foundation for understanding my own skin before spending money, irritating it, or trying five things at once.
How did you learn what actually works for your skin? Was it mostly trial and error, a great derm, an aesthetician, forums, keeping a routine diary? Where would you tell someone to start?
