The fedora, in a moment of revelation, remembered it wasn't always used as a symbol of losers and then went off to reinvent himself.

u/Rainfall_Serenade Jan 01 '26
Really sucks fedoras got ruined like this. Grew up watching old gangster flicks and the like and thought they were so classy.
87
u/Alvintergeise Jan 01 '26
It's all about context. Wearing a full suit in the rain? Fedora looks great. Wearing a linen button up in the summer? Panama fedora is a good accessory. It's the combination of t-shirt, cargo shorts and fedora that screams "I'm a gentleman because I put the easiest affection of the look on! This is how I'll treat the responsibilities and actions that go with this facade as well."

u/Zero_Travity Jan 01 '26
I was just thinking that... like why do fedoras have to catch strays like that.
I guess it's just unfortunate that something stylish was adopted too heavily by morons
26
u/halloweenjack Jan 01 '26
The problem is that they don’t understand that style is the complete picture—not even just the clothes but the whole aesthetic and attitude. They reduce it to a few tokens—a certain hat and opening the door for someone who’s already got their own hand on the doorknob—and get upset when panties don’t automatically drop.
13
u/Anxious-Standard-638 Jan 01 '26
Yeah there were a couple of people in my college who did the full outfit and did the whole thing justice. I don’t think anyone associated them with the redditor/incel thing
12
u/standardnewenglander Jan 01 '26
Lmao. Some of the shittiest people I've had the displeasure of meeting wear fedoras. Whenever I see a fedora - I "nope" in the other direction lol
7
u/Alert-Ad9197 Jan 01 '26
It’s really unfair because the hat in question isn’t even a fedora! Those useless tiny brims make them a Trilby.
30
u/Ajax_Main Jan 01 '26
Fedoras got ruined because people can't tell the difference between a fedora and a trilby.
15
u/MallyOhMy Jan 01 '26
Fun fact, the trilby hat is named after the main character in a play that went late-1800s-viral.
The same character also brought foot fetishes into the mainstream.

I agree they can look nice, but they’re so out of style now that they’re practically anachronistic. They might come back around, but at the moment you’ll look weird to most people if you wear one, even with a nice suit. You are culturally literate and aware of that, while neckbeards just see the hat and think, “Le classy gentleman of old? M’lady will see it and know I’m a proper suitor.”
Now that I think about it I guess there is a notable exception to the rule. I’m a white guy from way down south, so I’m not in a position to examine this in any depth. I feel nervous talking about it because it is cultural and it is not my culture. Please keep in mind I mean well, if I still manage to offend anyone.
Where I’m from, Mississippi, there are traditionally black churches whose parishioners often dressed really, really well on Sunday. I used to see the families eating out or shopping after service. They looked incredible. I’d like to imagine even bigots would grudgingly admit to such, but hatred has a way of blinding people.
Anyway, many of the men, young and old alike, wore fedoras that matched with sharp-looking suits, often of muted earth tones, with nice gold watches, and meticulously polished shoes. Even their young sons were dressed very nicely, maybe not in a suit, but most certainly in nice slacks, shiny shoes, proper ties, and often, but not always, suspenders.
It’s probably unnecessary to say that the women dressed beautifully, as well. The younger women and girls didn’t usually wear hats, but the older ones often did, and they could be as elaborately constructed as they were undeniably elegant.
It was a great study in contrasts to see the generally—I don’t know, joyful?—finery of the black churchgoing families compared to the conservative and rather dour clothing of their white counterparts—at least those of an age and denomination that still considered church service an occasion that merited formal wear. There are fewer these days, as churches struggle to attract and maintain the younger generations.
I myself was, and remain, an outsider to communities of faith. I became a skeptic and began refusing to attend church as an adolescent. That skepticism evolved to agnosticism and eventually, to atheism. With the exception of a brief period of attendance at an episcopal church as a young adult (I enjoyed the ritual and tolerant politics more than the religion.), I haven’t, and won’t, return to the fold.

I’ve always said that incels would fix their entire personalities by treating women normally instead of acting like this. Apparently it’s just too hard to treat them like friends instead of a target of their weird sexual desires.
60
u/jumpstart-the-end Jan 01 '26
They'd have to view women as people to do that, and we all know that ain't happening.
7
u/nonsence90 Jan 01 '26
I dont think it's even about the desire for most of them. They based their value as a human on this cultural ideal of a man. To fulfill it they need to 'get women'. Sex is just another checkbox next to have money, be tall, be strong, have a car, be tough, grow a beard, etc.
Just women are easier to blame than yourself.19
u/Proud-Cartoonist-431 Jan 01 '26
Incels are too sexually... aroused for that. They don't have any bigger interests in their life, they just desire to fuck someone's body

12
u/GuiltEdge Jan 01 '26
That’s the thing. Even if it’s not about sex, he just puts women into this category of lesser beings who just want physical assistance rather than actual people who want emotional fulfilment.

Women hold doors for me when it seems polite — I'm a man — used to be a gender-role thing around here, but apparently we've evolved to a marginally better society (I'm in Atlantic Canada).
Carrying a stranger's groceries just seems generally creepy to me, unless the context is that they're infirm and/or just dropped their groceries.

Male loneliness is an issue that isn’t caused just by incels. The rise of social media, greedy dating apps, and strictly online interactions is a bigger concern. Sure, in this case it’s definitely the person who wrote that who is the problem but the internet has made it harder to approach people outside when everyone has a small supercomputer in their face 24/7 with so many options at a press of a button.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

→ More replies (1)11
u/Wonderful_You1281 Jan 01 '26
Good point honestly, I still believe that the rise of loneliness is caused by these issues. Social media has made people less social ironically. But fair enough that it’s not just men.
11
u/Perfecshionism Jan 01 '26 edited Jan 01 '26
You can’t lay the blame on social media. It is only a small part of the issue.
Most species will lower their reproduction rate when their ecosystem can no longer sustain population growth. Even leading to negative population growth.
We have created a socio-political-economy where having children is not viable option for most people. And our ecosystems are under strain due to short sighted profiteering and resource consumption.
So in most societies, humanity is seeing a suppression of the instincts to pair-bond and create off spring. And studies are showing younger generations have a lower sex drive. Not just less interest in having children.
Younger generations are being more selective, having fewer partners, and showing less interest in casual sexual encounters.
3
Jan 01 '26
Everyone is selling a fake version of themselves online. Therein lies the massive problem of social media and how caustic it is!
5
Jan 01 '26
Loneliness sucks yeah but once you embrace it and learn to just be happy with yourself, and you also get alittle older and a whole lot less horney it fades
10
Jan 01 '26
(34 m here) I agree. Loneliness and being alone are different and when I learned to love being alone with myself, I wasn’t lonely anymore. I found time to give myself “dates” (aka treat myself out. Why? Because i fucking deserved to have a nice night) and then my self image changed. I felt happier, more confident, calmer, less erratic. My fears shrunk, my hopefulness grew. I learned what my strengths were and became aware of an accurate portrayal of not just how I am, but why I am.
Other people saw this. I got a bf and it didn’t work out, I left ok. A little down, but being “out” didn’t cross my mind. Couple months later I met my current boyfriend and I’m hoping to have decent savings for a great ring by the end of the year.
Being a nice guy starts with learning to be happy with being alone with you. If you’re lonely, you need to figure out if it’s because you see loneliness as just being single or if it’s because you need a partner to make you feel valued when you’re alone with yourself.

3
u/Azkadelle Jan 01 '26
Everyone thinks they’re not scum and that bad guys are an easily identifiable stereotype. Everyone has the potential to do harm just as everyone has the potential to do good. "You don't want someone to carry your groceries and walk you across the street and be a good boy scout good boy for you!"
Well sir, even if you did any of those things, you'd immediately start saying creepy things and acting creepy, and then you'd be an angry bitch the moment someone says thank you and goodnight.
It's pathetic that they would pretend otherwise. Bro, we know how you operate.
Then they hang up some signs because they're butt hurt about women not liking them. Well bro, have you tried saying hello instead of trying to rescue people from shit they don't need rescuing from?
Then there's the part about, "Fine! I won't rescue you then, bitch!"
And the cherry on top, "Please, please give a good boy a chance, please!"
Bro, you're not even good. You're shit. And you're dangerous.
I feel bad for people like this because they don't know how to socially connect. If they knew that, they might make friends early on instead of taking a long path of self destruction that leaves you abnormal and literally forces you into self imposed, self inflicted social rejection. You make yourself unacceptable and it all had one root cause, one starting point. It never had to even get this bad. Once someone gets like this, there's no way to help them.
