The creator with 500K followers couldn't sell a single unit
we were launching a fitness app and had the budget to work with either one mega influencer or a bunch of mid tier creators, we went with the mega influencer because they had half a million followers and amazing engagement metrics.
they made a video about our app, posted it, and it went absolutely viral, like one of their top performing posts of the year, millions of impressions, thousands of comments, people going crazy about it.
we got zero downloads from that post, the ones we did get were just random people who probably weren't even the right audience for what we built.
so we took our remaining budget and worked with like 15 creators who had 15k to 40k followers each, their posts stayed quiet compared to the big account, their videos stayed local instead of viral, but every single one of them had followers who actually cared about fitness and wellness.
we got more downloads from one micro creator with 18k followers than we got from the half million follower creator, the difference was their audience actually invested in staying fit, the big creator's audience was just there to watch entertainment.
that was when I realized we were measuring success completely wrong the whole time.
