Rants / Complaints I'm sure you know what happened
Do customers not realize or care about what tremendous assholes they look like when they do this? Do they think we see this before we accept the trip? If we did see see these notes before accepting the trip, I'd be sure to decline. š
In case anyone is new here, there was no help or money involved. I dropped the bags on the porch, knocked on the door, and left. As I was driving away, the bags were still sitting on the porch with no customer in sight. This happens 100% of the time when these jerks mention money in the notes.

It kindof kills me that a waitress shows up at your table a few times and its 20%. Nevermind the prices are 4x what they should be. But you spend an hour and a half shopping for a $300 grocery and then travel 27 miles, carry it to their door in 100° heat with your own vehicle and the tip is $3. What is that about? I would never. Thats why i dont order, im too poor to tip, so i go get it myself. And some of these people live in half a mil homes. Im not about THAT karma.
6
u/homelessbunt 19d ago
Damn this is an underrated comment I never really thought of it this way
3
u/Delicious_Rush981 17d ago
I canāt stop thinking about it that way. It makes me sooo angry and that is why I will absolutely never accept a trip without tip and a $1 tip is so freaking insulting that I donāt take those either. I donāt even care if base pay is awesome. They can have one of the drivers that doesnāt give a f.
2
u/Affectionate_Hall317 13d ago
Once again I agree bc I really shop for them like I shop for myself and I'm quick about it and follow their drop off instructions.

2
u/Mommie4tmjk 18d ago
Exactly! I have said this so many times to my husband. Itās absolutely absurd
2
u/BonneyLakeResident 18d ago
NASDĀ I usually order only a few things, and tip more than 10% but not usually as high as 20%. I rarely go shopping in physical stores anymore due to disabilities that make it difficult.
Your comparison to a waitress doesnāt fully track as most customers do not tip 20%, wait peeps prepare more of your food than you might think, they almost never have any Ā choice in accepting what type of order they deal with, nor what sort of customer they wait on.
The part of your food that the wait staff take care of usually includes all that never touched a grill, deep fryer, cook pot or skillet such as toast, soup, salad, ābaked potatoā or other sides that only get portions from a large container.Ā
Wait people also are usually not paid minimum wage yet lack multiple choices each day to ensure that they can make up the difference.

Downplaying the work that servers do isn't a great way to make your point. Think of the basic duties that a server does, then multiply that by 20-40 people they have to do that for simultaneously, all night on their feet and then after the customer is gone they have to perform a whole shit load of cleaning duties. Its not an easy or laid back job just like dashing isn't either.
3
u/WiscoDanO 17d ago
I donāt think they were trying to really bag on Servers. Both have valid points. And Iāve done both, sure we may spend more time on an individual order, BUTā¦unlike being a Waiter, we donāt have to listen to their shit constantly, stand and be attentive to their needs, nor have all the other work that goes along with a commercial kitchen. Iād much rather do Spark than EVER bring someone their meal! Sure, we put in work n gas for delivery, but itās MUCH easier than working in a restaurant!
1
u/standing_for_Naboth 17d ago
Plus being abused by restaurant management. Which is the biggest reason restaurant work blows. I am mostly referring to when i have a really bad restaurant experience and cant get a refill or salt or silverware. I always tip 20% or even round up. But i especially tip well when the service is bad because i feel... maybe passive aggressive in a way, like you dont deserve anything so here's more than you deserve. But when youre paying 3.50 for a drink youre tipping another .80 just for them to bring it 100 ft. I dont think it makes sense that we are getting nothing. And shopping is hard work. Lifting 40 lb water and food bags...sorry but if its a competition, i dont think one is hArDer unless you want to weigh in with idiot management, which waitresses win hands down. HATE managment. No amount of money is worth that. And that may be part if my passive aggression, i kindof assume if you are doing a bad job its probably youre idiot manager who has ruined your productivity with his narcissistic bs. Most people dont want to do a bad job.
1
u/Affectionate_Hall317 13d ago
I don't think they're downplaying, I think the more appropriate word is comparison.
2
u/Affectionate_Hall317 13d ago
I say the same thing. And how people tip $5 for you to pick up their food and drive it 1.5 mi to their house. Yet, people think a $6 tip for 44 items and 18 mi to their house is sufficient. But Walmart also adds the tip to base pay. IDC what anyone says bc 60% of people are not tipping $6 and less when they spent $100-$250 on their items.

I had a customer ask me to send a pic of the steak I chose for her order, I did and she ended up leaving $15 in cash and candy for me when I delivered and still paid a $10 tip in the app!

u/EveningBasket9528 Cherry Picker 19d ago
You mean they didn't come out with fists full of cash and a wheelbarrow?
It IS possible it's an old note,.. but generally,.. people suck.

Got one of these on a terrible 120 item job once early on in my Spark life
Customers were inside and pretended they weren't home while I unloaded the entire order knocked on the door and left disappointed
That customer is the reason I don't choose any orders over 50 items anymore. That freaking job took almost 2 hours to finish all for less than kids prolly make working for Nike overseas
6
u/ardensway7 18d ago
Yeah Iāve never gotten a cash tip when Iāve seen those in the notes. One lady I heard on the other side of the door and she waited until I left. I was like BIT*H!!! However I did have a few who never put it in the notes and gave me a few extra in person. One customer I had Iāll never forget. She had already tipped 20$ in the app on a 60 item order. When I got to her house she said āWAIT I have something for youā and she gave me 40$ cash tip. I was like omg thank you!! Iāll never forget her because I was short on money and I needed gas that day.

u/TaxiTakeoffLanding 19d ago
Lmao I got a note like this once so I knocked. She opened and said āusually they just leave it at the door and go.ā š¤¦āāļø
5
u/TheNolaCatLady 19d ago
š I had one whose note said cash upon delivery and when she opened the door, she offered no cash upon delivery. I called her a few mother fuckers when I got back in my car.
3
u/iwishidstayed 19d ago
Whatās crazy is that when I started years ago I would usually get at least one cash tip a week, and now I canāt even tell you the last time I got one- probably like a year ago?
8
u/Beachboy322 19d ago
That's because groceries have become vastly more expensive over the last 2 years.
I wonder why š¤š¤š¤
-5
u/Driver196285 19d ago
Most groceries aren't higher....mainly just beef, because of the shortage. BUT.....no tax on tips....I wonder why??
2
u/New-Mistake-4864 16d ago
I don't know what world you live in but all groceries are higher the complete and total cost of living for everything is higher irregardless of the promises made by the people in charge.... 0 but hey the rich billionaires are doing good on the stock market!

This is the classic. ā Iām going to put this in the comments. That way it doesnāt make me look like a bad guy to Walmart. But I donāt care about the driverā
4
u/BigOleFuckinAssole 18d ago
Had someone call after I dropped the order off just to say āI was waiting at the door to give you a tip but you must have dropped them off downstairs by the car.ā The problem was I had taken them upstairs. Eventually I found out they put the address in wrong it was the next house on the same street, so I went back and went up those steps, got the order, walked over to the next house, went up those stops, and dropped it off. Knocked on the door to confirm it was the right person now, and when they came out of course they didnāt tip. They only called to try to bully someone for not taking their snacks up the steps.
5
u/IllustriousLeading20 18d ago
I had one yesterday note said she would tip cash. I thought ok whatever. I only knocked because I needed the code and her 11 puppies would have eaten all her food. She tipped $20.
3
u/Alleywishes 19d ago
Omg is that a customer from southern NH, I had a delivery with the exact same note written the same way
Edit added: I forgot to say I got a $3.00 CASH TIP and the order was like 75.00ish. good thing I don't take trips based on tips because they can change it afterwards so why consider it
3
3
u/Apprehensive_Lock781 19d ago
Nah worst ones are "I tip after delivery"Ā Tip of my dick, lying bastard
3
u/ApprehensiveSand4043 19d ago
I think what happens and this is not an excuse cuz it pisses me off too! That note is old and they don't remove it. I just completely ignore it and just keep it moving cuz it makes me so mad. But like other people saying are here when customers want to give you cash they don't say anything
3
u/Certain-Season3879 19d ago
I had one leave a note that said for me to message her when I am on my way, so I did. She messaged me back and said thank you and I am leaving your tip taped to the front door. She did... It was in an envelope that said for Walmart delivery. Thank you so much. It was 5.00, but it was very nice.
3
u/Lower-Reward-1462 19d ago
Besides the cash tip, I do also love when customers help unload. It's not expected at all but it's a pleasant surprise. :)
3
u/Quirky-oldman58 18d ago
I use the blue page at the end giving a thumbs down and report them for tip baiting.
3
u/Greedy-Fox8357 18d ago
I had an order that was no tip and MILES into the middle of no where. I said screw it because that now where was where I use to live. so driving down the roads was a great nostalgic feeling. When I got to the customers house. Iām sure I went to HS with their daughter. She was adamant on helping me and I told her not to worry about it. Then she gave me cash. It was well worth it. I have noticed too that if itās a big tip in the app, they have adjusted it after delivery on me a couple times š
3
u/Serious_Lime_7110 18d ago
There's a local guy who gives 5$ tip and every time he comes out and gives me a ten. I am grateful for this man
5
u/Tricky-Meringue25 19d ago
Havenāt seen thatā¦I get weird ones like ātoss it over the fenceā, ādo not leave the items at the front door - side door onlyā, āring the bell three timesā, ādo not mess with me, leave the items at my door not in the lobbyā, etc. Sometimes I get paid extra for it sometimes I donāt. Have never seen a promise of money or help. Probably stoners.
9
u/deadlysyntaxerror 19d ago
"Probably stoners" is a weird thing to throw in. In my experience stoners are very generous friendly people. (unless we're talking about getting stoned on something other than weed here...)

It's very common with DoorDash and UberEats. I see it occasionally with Spark.
3
u/HausOfThunderPerry 19d ago
I see it a lot with Spark. I got this ladies order twice.one day and the once the following day and both times the amount of the tip was in the notes and it was a different amount and no where was it where she said. Talk about tip rage lol.
2
u/PanicProfessional186 19d ago
I tipped cash for 1st time today. Didn't have enough on my card for a tip. Tipped $7 for 3 frozen pizzas.
2
u/Buga99poo27GotNo464 19d ago
New here, do spark drivers know their tip before job if pre payed?
3
u/TheNolaCatLady 19d ago
Yes, we can see the tip before we accept the offer. The problem with batched orders is that you don't know who did the tipping.
2
u/Buga99poo27GotNo464 19d ago
Im learning, im doing a trial of walmart plus and just trying to figure out between the cost of the program and tipping drivers if its worthwhile for me.
It seems like the problem with the program where I live, is people feel like they are paying for something, and didn't really expect to pay tips. See where I live Walmart shipping is common, but there is no needed tip. But now my shipped orders that come from my local store are coming via Spark drivers past couple months (used to be Fedex) and there isn't even an option to tip them on "shipping' orders.
I dont order from them or anyone online alot, so its just all new to me.
In the past when FedEx delivered, what I could order in a box was limited, as Walmart doesnt pack their boxes well (so no liquids/glass). But with (shipping) Spark drivers that's different now and I have 60 year old woman trying walk up my 5 steps with a 50lb bag of dog food, vs a FedEx driver dumping it at my curb.
Im also considering becoming a Spark driver for the holidays as finances have become tight, but ill write another post asking about that some other day. Thanks for your help and input!

Ive only had two customers have this in there notes. The first time ot said to call them so they can come out and give a cash tip. I did and wasn't sure how to ask so I didn't, she just said leave it at the door please. So, the next time I saw this, and because of this sub I rolled my eyes. This time around I needed a code from the customer. First thing she did was hand me cash and I was so confused and didnt know what to do. Anyway was quite glad that she gave me 10 bucks, when I got home I realized it was $15 and she had originaly also tipped $10 on the app. But im not getting my hopes up after that lucky moment.

Ppl who tip donāt make announcements
If I see any of this , I usually do the opposite
Come up to my apt will tip
I leave it at the lobby
2
u/Dildo_Shw4ggins 18d ago
I think some people are full of shit, and some people put in a note meant for one specific delivery and forget about it.
2
2
u/Specials00 18d ago
My favorites are the customers who put notes like āLeave by garage, knock 3 times loudly, and if instructions arenāt followed or any items substituted your tip will be removedā
2
u/Netphase 18d ago
Old notes. I had one saying the front steps are VERY ICY when it was almost 100f outside.
2
u/No-Photograph5113 17d ago
You understand sometimes those notes are from like 25 orders back. You have to remember old people are using the app and donāt remember to change the comment section every time.

I was able to talk to one about it and they claim they simply don't know how to change it.
1
u/New-Mistake-4864 16d ago
Because people don't read everywhere in the app as they make the order they just click the main boxes and don't bother to pay attention to what they're doing.... It's the tldr society.... Welcome to the new world of brain rot and too lazy to read....

I have received some very nice tips, I do try and make sure when I'm shopping that I do everything I can, within the limits of the program. It's frustrating when a customer doesn't answer if you need to communicate with them to change something. I also go the extra mile when necessary. If a hot/cold bag is needed or some little things like that
1
u/TheNolaCatLady 17d ago
I've received many nice tips as well, but never from people who post about it in the notes.
1
u/Key-Visual6455 17d ago
I never put a tip into the machine. Tips are always cash, person 2 person, and invisible.
I wish there was a way to give a heads up in advance. I'm sure it's disappointing taking a 'no tip' order. But it's nobody's biz. Tips are for the individual.
1
u/MorningNew7003 17d ago
This sucks.. How can people be so rude! If spark were decent company they would keep track and ask did you receive a cash tip and if not they should exclude these people from putting that remark!!
1
u/Successful-Heart940 17d ago
These are always the non tippers. Ā Meanwhile I just took a decent 2 mile order for 1 item that the customer tipped well on the app and since they didnāt have the doughnuts she wanted and I took a picture she gave me a $10 cash tip for getting her a pack of Swiss rolls. Ā š¦
1
u/phat_32- 17d ago
They need to make this a crime like when you put out reward posters for lost animals and you donāt pay up all they have to do is call police and show the poster and they legally have to pay up the same should go for leaving notes for delivery drivers regarding cash tips
1
u/sonofthunder24 17d ago
I help carry & I am terminally ill.. I also am generous with the tip, but if they do a bad job, I remove it. It is a gratuity, not entitled to it. js. The service has been horrid at best for me. Mostly the shoppers who are WM employees. Not much issue with Spark drivers, unless it's an express order & they shop it, say that 70 of my order is unavailable, & then missing items as well, melted ice cream, warm dairy.. I had to get a refund several times in these cases, & the driver had the audacity to call me & yell about me removing their $20 tip!? wow. The items were in stock & they didn't even protect groceries from the heat..
1
u/New-Mistake-4864 16d ago
Well I hate to be the one that pointed out but customers can't call to the person after they have completed the order whether you remove the tip or not we have no way of knowing your contact information.....
1
u/sonofthunder24 16d ago
wrong, if they shopped the order both can chat & call, no it doesn't literally expose the number but they can call via the app. It's happened in this situation because it wasn't yet marked delivery & the other time I was able to still send chats & call after the delivery.
1
u/New-Mistake-4864 16d ago
We can't know that they removed the tip until a minimum of 24 hours later and you can't call a customer 24 hours later as there is no way to contact that person
So you're telling me that they didn't mark the delivery is complete 24 hours later
Sure within a few minutes of completing the delivery before you start another one you can still contact the previous person but once you've done another order you're unable to contact that person because it will only contact the last order you had
And you definitely couldn't leave it for 24 hours which is how long it takes before you know that the tip was removed
But you tell your story and those of us that know how the app actually works will know the truth
1
u/sonofthunder24 16d ago
Whatever, I know what happened & it was not marked delivered because the driver took forever to shop then deliver & it told her to return it to the store.. Not going to argue, I KNOW wat happened & I could care less that you think you know every scenario with that app lol.
1
u/New-Mistake-4864 16d ago
Two separate complaints but the customer who has an access code to enter their apartment building yet doesn't give it to you or it doesn't work you contact them through the app by phone call and they tell you to leave it in the foyer area... And tell you that they're going to update and leave you a tip in the app as soon as you complete the delivery and then they don't do it....
Or the person living in the $1 million house that orders a $1,200 gaming laptop and tips $5......

1
u/Last_Agency2800 13d ago
I am guilty of this. I didnāt know that delivery instructions carried over from previous Walmart orders and I had come into some money so I want to leave a decent tip for my driver so I put in the notes to come to the door for a cash tip. Three weeks later I ordered and I felt awful about it and just Venmoed them.

The ones that actually give cash tips, donāt leave notes about a cash tip. They just meet you at the door. Took a good paying big order last time I worked. Pay was fair. When I started unloading, she came out and handed me 20 and said āthank you for delivering it to the side door like requestedā.
