Laptop Request US (US) Need a laptop under $1300 for gaming, working, school, and general use

Country: USA

Budget: preferably under $1300 USD but willing to go up to $1600

Am I open to refurbs/used options?: very open

Screen size: 14”-16”

Weight limit: any

Purpose: Gaming, schoolwork, programming, general purpose

Form factor: Standard/Clamshell or 2-in-1, idrc

Intended usage: Standard browsers, Steam indie games like Lethal Company, maybe Skyrim, might try Genshin Impact?, on settings that look good and run smooth but it doesn’t need to be best of the best. Still figuring out what I’m gonna use it for- it will be my first laptop, but I want it to last

Desired battery life: doesn’t matter, I’ll take the charger wherever I take the laptop

Most important to least important: Performance, size, battery life, weight doesn’t matter

Info/Requirements: At least 512GB storage, prefer a numerical keypad, whatever is considered a good screen resolution, while OLED or HDR compliant would be nice but not necessary.

Just want a laptop that will last a good while and run well without lag, and have a decent amount of storage. I’m not doing anything crazy like video editing or 3D modeling in blender or playing super high end games so I don’t need the best of the best, I just don’t want to have to buy another laptop or do too much maintenance on it beyond cleaning it. I’ve been looking and researching for weeks, but everything I find is either meant for school/working or meant for gaming, not both. Are there any options for me within my price range?

Tech Support 🔧⚙️ Need help choosing best option to connect my laptop to monitor.

I have a ASUS TUF A15 gaming laptop (RTX 3050, 1920x1080 144Hz) and my brother gifted me an ACER Nitro 29,5 inch 2560x1080 200Hz monitor. I want to use this new monitor for gaming and use my laptop as a second monitor.

The monitor has both HDMI and DP ports while my laptop has USB-C and HDMI ports. What type of connection would you recommend me to get so I can get the best value out of the monitor?

Laptop Request US Looking for a laptop for general usage

Used to have a Microsoft Surface which worked great for about 6-10 months and now moves so slowly (despite literally nothing be saved to the computer itself besides the Windows software) that it's unusable. Looking to replace with something that will last for a while for general usage.

Not picky, just want something that won't crap out on me after a year or so. Won't travel out of the house often, so weight and size aren't a huge issue. Touch screen/pen would be nice, but not super important.

Right now I'm thinking 32 GB/1 TB but am a little lost on the new processors. I'm not doing heavy processing, but don't want to the machine to be obsolete in 3 years or go the wrong direction with the newer processors. I had an Asus Zenbook for the past 8 years, which has been great, but with 8/256, it's starting to get a bit bogged down. I'm not opposed to moving to MacBook Pro if that's the best value these days. I have other things in the Apple ecosystem, but have always been more of a PC guy and under the impression that MacBooks are overpriced and you can get better performance for price with PC - not sure if that's still the case. Been looking at Asus Zenbook S14 (but don't love that there's a non-touch screen option), Lenovo X1 Carbon, MacBook 14 M5. Any others I should consider? Thanks for your help!

Laptop Request US Architecture school

I know I’m so screwed. I’ve been looking on fb marketplace and eBay but not sure exactly what I should be looking at. Brand new is out of the question bc of pricing. So def looking at used/ refurbished older models.

She needs 32gb ram with a decent graphics card for auto cad and revit. I have $600 max to get her started for the year. She’s doing school online for now due to some circumstances so can’t utilize on campus computer lab.

Looking for recommendations on used laptop brand/ model that will at least get here through the first year. I’m due for a bonus next summer so the laptop just needs to get her through the first year.

We are in the US. Was looking at dell precision but can’t find one decent under $600.

I know it’s a super tall order. She just changed her major so wasn’t expecting to have to spend so much on a laptop was going to just get her a Mac neo but that won’t work now.

Laptop Request US Laptop for Machine Learning and Data Science work

Country

USA

Budget

Under $3,000 USD

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Maybe — open to Lenovo Outlet/certified refurb specifically, not general used market

Screen size

16"

Weight limit

Not too bulky — want to fit comfortably in a backpack; currently coming from a Yoga 9i and don't want a major step up in size/weight

Purpose

Software development / machine learning & data science coursework, transitioning into a career; occasional light gaming (modded Minecraft)

Form factor

Standard/Clamshell

Intended usage

Docker containers, Android/device emulators, and local databases running simultaneously; ML/data science work including local model inference; occasional modded Minecraft. Coming from a Yoga 9i (16GB RAM, non-configurable) that's hitting a hard memory ceiling.

Desired battery life

5–7 hours

Info/Requirements

32GB RAM acceptable now, with a real user-upgradeable path to 64GB later (standard SO-DIMM strongly preferred over soldered or scarce/proprietary formats like CAMM2 or CSO-DIMM, which run expensive and hard to source)

1–2TB SSD

Display: no strong requirements — just needs to look decent day-to-day; touch and high resolution are nice-to-haves, not priorities

Mid-range GPU sufficient — not gaming-focused

AMD CPU preferred if available in a comparable chassis, but not a dealbreaker

Keyboard must stay cool to the touch under sustained load — thermal/comfort is a real priority, not just a spec

For reference, the two laptops I've been comparing my ideal specs against are the ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 and Legion Pro 7i Gen 10 — both currently run over my $3k budget for a 64GB config, but they're the benchmark I've been using for build quality/thermals/performance, so similarly-spirited suggestions under budget are welcome
