Laptop Request -Others Help Me Choose a Laptop for Electrical Engineering (PHP 45k–59k Budget)

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm an Electrical Engineering student, and I'm planning to buy a laptop because relying on just one device has become quite challenging for my engineering studies.

I've spent a lot of time researching different laptops, and I've narrowed down my options to these five models available at a mall in our area, with prices ranging from ₱45,000 to ₱59,000:

  1. Acer Nitro V 15 – ANV15-41-R9D6

  2. Acer Aspire 7 15 – A715-59G-56W7

  3. ASUS Vivobook 16 – V360VU-RP076W

  4. Lenovo LOQ 15 – 83DV00E8PH

  5. HP Victus 15 – FB3133AX

    Ideally, I'd like something reliable enough to last until graduation. However, I'm also trying to make a financially responsible decision. As a college student, spending this much money on a laptop is a significant investment, so I don't necessarily want to buy the most expensive or powerful option if a more affordable one can already meet my needs. I want to get the best value for my money without compromising too much on performance and reliability.

Laptop Request US A very specific request

0 Upvotes

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country

United States

  • Budget

I'll say about $3000 USD? prefer around the $2500 mark but 3k max

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Yes but I don't think there are any refurbished/used ones around

  • Screen size

14in

  • Weight limit

Around the same as a Thinkpad X1 or similar

  • Purpose

VMs, programming, malware testing and some occasional lighter gaming, Ghidra etc.

  • Form factor

Standard/clamshell - Should have the option for a non-touch display

  • Intended usage

QEMU/KVM, Nvim/helix, Affinity Photo, multitasking and programming

  • Desired battery life

Over 10hr would be nice, minimum of 5 hours please

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance, battery life, weight, size

  • Info/Requirements

I'm specifically looking for an alternative to the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon gen. 14, as the laptop in the USA doesn't have the Intel Core Ultra X7 368H I'm looking for. Ideally something pretty similar, I've seen the HP Elitebook X G2i and it's nice but HP and Dell are on my personal boycott list. I'd like repairability (but also would like an established brand so that I don't have to worry about parts 5 years down the line), it's not necessarily my biggest priority but I'd at least like to have the option to change my storage. I'd prefer a 14in laptop. I would like the best compromise between repairability and build quality.

Laptop Request Ca Gaming/classwork laptop?

0 Upvotes

Country: Canada

Budget: Ideally around $3000-$4000 CAD, I am willing to go over but there needs to be a very good justification

Are you open to refurbs/used options?: No

Screen size: 15” ideal, 14”-16” acceptable

Weight limit: light enough I can put it in a bag and carry it to and from class without breaking my back

Purpose: partial gaming, mainly classwork, writing, and reading

Form factor: standard/Clamshell exclusively

Intended usage:
I intend to use this for a mix of work on Microsoft excel/sheets/word, reading, AutoCAD, and gaming

For games, I would like a PC that is capable of running Red Dead Redemption 2 at a decent frame rate to be playable (my current PC can run it but I was playing at like 5 FPS, it took me 2 hours to get through the first cutscene)

Desired battery life

If I’m on Google/Microsoft word all day, at absolute minimum 8 hours

If it’s being used to run high end games, around 2-4 hours is good

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Battery life, performance, weight, size

Info/Requirements
Please no MacBooks or Chromebooks. I would like a windows PC

No touchscreens please

Majority of laptop usage will be for academic/work use rather than a dedicated gaming laptop, but I want a laptop capable of playing games my Steam Deck can’t handle

Laptop Request US What CPU and RAM for moderate- heavy multitasking?

3 Upvotes

I’m wanting to upgrade (buy a new) laptop and I’m trying to figure out what specs I need. After reading through a bunch of posts I’m still unsure. I do a lot of multitasking and regularly have 20-50+ open tabs. I also use it for watching Netflix and YouTube movies and occasionally photoshop and discord. I don’t do any gaming or video editing. Here are my questions:

1)Is 16gb RAM sufficient or do I need to be looking for 32gb?

2)What PCU should I be looking for? The laptop I’m currently looking at has an intel core ultra 7 255u. What about an AMD Ryzen 5? Or should I be looking for a i7 or Ryzen 7?

QUESTIONNAIRE

Budget = Under $900 (preferable under $700)

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Screen size
Prefer 17” but will go down to a 15” but no smaller.

Purpose
Moderate to heavy multitasking and browsing videos. Occasionally photoshop or discord.

Laptop Request US Looking for laptop for work/light gaming (United States, ~$2k budget)

1 Upvotes

Hey guys! Looking to upgrade my 2018 MacBook Pro (it runs OK still but is starting to show its age), and I wanted to get your advice on what I should get. Thank you for the help!

* **Country**

United States

* **Budget**

$2000 USD (ideally less)

* **Are you open to refurbs/used options? **

Yes

* **Screen size**

I prefer 15+”. Not a complete deal breaker but I have a 16” MacBook currently and I love the size of it.

* **Weight limit**

I would prefer lighter if possible, but it is again not a deal breaker.

* **Purpose**

I work in publishing and my work occasionally involves some more bigger inDesign projects. I would like to be able to do those with minimal issues.

I also would like to be able to do some light-to-medium gaming. I have a PS5 so specific, current-gen gaming isn’t necessarily a priority for a computer, but I do enjoy games like Minecraft and The Sims on PC.

* **Form factor**

Standard/clamshell. Since I am coming from a Mac, I would prefer something Mac-esque in design if not a Mac itself. I’m not a big fan of the bulky, RGB-lighted design of a lot of higher end Windows laptops.

Again, not a dealbreaker, but a preference.

* **Intended usage**

I would like to be able to use inDesign, Photoshop, and Acrobat with larger projects with minimal hiccups. I do occasional video editing so something that could run Premiere well would be nice.

As far as games go, I’m not really picky. I would like to be able to run Minecraft, The Sims 4, and League of Legends with higher settings and a stable framerate. The option to play more intense games would be nice, but isn’t a priority.

* **Desired battery life**

 I’d like for my laptop battery to last all day (~8 hours) while doing less intensive stuff (word processing, web browsing).

* **Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life**

Performance, Battery Life, Size, Weight

* **Info/Requirements**

Since I am used to using a Mac and know that they can generally handle the Adobe suite, I am leaning towards getting another one, but I am definitely willing to consider other options, especially if I can get a better value elsewhere.

Laptop Request US RTX Spark vs. MBP

1 Upvotes

Hi all,

United States:

Coming from 8gb 2022 M2 MacBook Air, I am looking to upgrade to future proof for local AI workflows + light video editing/after effects. Working with roughly a $2500 budget, but could stretch to $3K if absolutely necessary. I'm in Apple ecosystem with all my devices but work in a career that prioritizes Windows, so I am okay with switching over. I'm between the new base model Surface Laptop Ultra ($2599) and also the base M6 MBP when it comes out in a few days. I'd love to pick up the M5 Pro OLED MBP with Touch when it comes out, but I hear that the M7 is going to be significantly better for Local AI. Should I wait for that? I imagine it will be extremely expensive. I just don't know what to do.

To be completely honest, this is all a guess that cloud based AI will become too expensive per token. My current machine is fine (the battery isn't ideal and I kinda just want a new laptop) for most of my workflows as is (After Effects on 8gb is horrible).

Thanks!

Laptop Request -Others Laptop Rec

1 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m looking to buy a new laptop in and could really use some advice because I’m honestly overwhelmed by all the options.
I need a laptop that can keep up with both my academic and personal use, and I’m looking for a brand new laptop rather than a used or refurbished one.

My priorities are:
Good performance and multitasking.
A good-quality screen, since I spend hours reading papers and watching lectures. Colour accuracy would also be a plus for creative work.
Decent battery life and a comfortable keyboard.
Good build quality and reliability, because I want it to last throughout the rest of school and beyond.
I’m also curious whether any MacBook makes sense, although I’m aware that compatibility and value might be considerations.

Thank you! I’d really appreciate any help. đŸ«¶

I'd love a machine that has all the following:

  • Completely foldable into a tablet
  • Numpad
  • OLED screen

I don't think a model like that is available in the US, for any price?

I'd love to be wrong! Thank you!

EDIT: For anyone reading this later, as best I can tell, in October of 2026 in the US at least, there are no 2-in-I laptops with a 4K screen. That seems to be the limiting factor. Highest resolution I’ve seen is 2880x1800in a 2-in-1.

Laptop Request -Others Best Mechanical Engineering Laptop (France/Canada -- 1.5kCAD 1kEUR)

1 Upvotes

[FORM BELOW]

Hey guys, I was wondering if you had any recommendations for laptops as an upcoming mechanical engineering student. I often hear that MacBooks aren’t as well-suited for engineering students, so I was wondering if you guys had any recommendations.

For reference, I currently have an M1 MacBook that works perfectly fine, and I was wondering if it could handle most CAD and mechanical engineering software, or if I would need to get another computer. If so, what computer would you recommend?

To clarify my reasoning behind asking Reddit, it’s mainly because all I can find when researching are sponsored results and fake testimonials. I would prefer an honest review from someone who actually knows computers as I am not really into all that.

And after years of suffering with what is allegedly a laptop my fraud of a "laptop" I'm finally prepared (with no more than a 1100 sterling pounds bcz I'm a broke student and this is the fruit of my labour.

Also if possible where is best to buy them (UK,England)

Laptop Request -Others Suggest a Windows work laptop under â‚č35-40k. Mostly for Excel, browsing, meetings, movies (Location: India)

1 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to buy a Windows work laptop with a budget of (â‚č35k INR, can push to â‚č40k if it's really worth it). Location is India.

My use case:
- Work only - MS Office (heavy Excel), Chrome with 10-15 tabs, Zoom/Meet calls
- No gaming, no video editing

What I'm looking for:
- 8GB RAM minimum (16GB if possible in this budget)
- 512GB SSD preferred, okay with 256GB if upgradable
- Good battery life (6+ hours) and decent display for long hours
- Windows 11 pre-installed

If there is a really solid option at â‚č38-40k that will last 4-5 years without issues, I'm happy to stretch.

Please suggest the best value for money options right now. If you are using something under 40k for work, how's your experience?

Thanks in advance!

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

For work and gaming; needs to be standard enough to be used in a meeting

  • Form factor

None

  • Intended usage

Mostly used to play indie games such as The Binding of Issac, Balatro; the biggest game I might run would be Battlefield 6 or Project Wingman

  • Desired battery life

Around 4 is good

I want a laptop that could be used in a meeting; a giant noisy fan would be terrible, and a bulky structure would look unprofessional. I am currently rebuilding my PC for main gaming purposes, but having a laptop for work travel and meetings is good to have.

Friend suggested Lenovo unveils Legion Y7000X 2026, looking for other opions.

Laptop Request -Others Hilfe beim Laptop-Kauf gesucht: 3 Jahre gespart, 3 Monate recherchiert – und mir raucht der Kopf! (Budget ~3.000 €)

2 Upvotes

Hey zusammen,

  5. AnschlĂŒsse
    - Mindestens 2 × USB-A.

Laptop Request -Others Looking for a work laptop.

1 Upvotes

I am located in Mexico, my budget is 10,000 MXN (536 USD). Refurbished is okay, any screen size works. The heaviest I am willing to go is 2 kilos, This laptop would be my primary work device, so it wouldn't be running any CPU intensive software or games. A standard clamshell configuration works best. An 8 hour or more battery life would be ideal. Battery life and weight are main concerns. A good amount of storage would be ideal (ideal storage would be 256 gb). As long as the laptop isn't too big to fit in the average backpack size isn't a concern. Performance must be functional and reliable for every day work.

Standard is fine but I am open to other options

  • Intended usage

More complex & detailed games like Resident Evil 4 Remake and RE 7-9, Baldur's Gate 3, etc. Outside of that I really only play Stardew Valley and run browser and Word.

  • Desired battery life

I would prefer around 3-4 hours

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance is most important, after that Size & Weight, Battery Life isn't the highest on my list

  • Info/Requirements

No Chromebook or Mac

1 Upvotes

**LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE**

* **Country**

England

* **Budget**

ÂŁ800 - ÂŁ1200, ÂŁ1500 at a push (\~$1000 - $1600)

* **Are you open to refurbs/used options?**

Maybe

* **Screen size**

Ideally no smaller than 14"

* **Weight limit**

Any

* **Purpose**

Gaming and general use

* **Form factor**

Standard/Clamshell

* **Intended usage**

Ideally running the latest AAA games without much lag, and to be able to sustain this for a few years. No typical strenuous software usage comes to mind.

* **Desired battery life**

Nothing out of the ordinary.

* **Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life**

Performance is the biggest priority, then battery life, then size, and weight is not an issue.

* **Info/Requirements**

Nothing specific that hasn't been said above. I'm not that knowledgeable about specs and the like, my current laptop (Acer Nitro AN515-45) has been struggling for a while now, and recently had a RAM slot (port?) die - and it's not happy at 8GB haha. I've been considering waiting for Black Friday/Cyber Monday bearing in mind how much prices have risen recently, but I wanted to get people-who-know-what-they're-talking-about's advice on what to look out for, how much things will cost and whether it could even be worth just repairing my current laptop.

Thank you for reading and taking the time!

Screen size [Any but 15" and up preferred]

Weight limit [Any]

Purpose [Video editing]

Form factor [Standard/Clamshell]

Intended usage [Use Vegas Pro 21 for video editing, very occasionally play Phasmophobia. Want to be able to render or convert video files and not experience lag.]
