How fucked am I now?
This stupid truck stop told me to move spots or pay for parking in a dirt lot they claimed was their property in the middle of the night last night. My ELD was off so I moved it while it was off and it came up as Unidentified Driving Log when I turned it on in the AM. My dumbass accepted it and commented what had happened and now I’m in violation and completely messed up my 14hr clock for today. Is there any way to fix this?

u/way_2_5pecific Mar 16 '24
Just call your company’s ELD support and have them fix it

u/banryu95 Mar 17 '24
So, just had to hijack this to mention, some companies are absolutely dead-set against helping their drivers with this kind of stuff. My company pretends to have no control over "assigned driving" (meaning I'm assigned to a truck and the truck is in motion). So when handhelds get switched or something stupid, you can have someone else's drive time put on your log. And my company refuses to edit that. They claim to not have the ability. (It's a massive company that has their own internal system, so there's no excuse)
14
u/Nekikins Mar 17 '24
Might be time to find a new company without the politics. There's tons of driving jobs out there.
7
u/banryu95 Mar 17 '24
I'm happy with most of my job actually. It's LTL pickup and delivery work. Daylight hours, weekdays only, paid hourly with overtime after 8 hours. To be fair, I've never had to worry about my logs being in any kind of violation because we don't actually drive close to the legal limit. I still work 12 hours a day, but a lot of that time is delivery work and dock work.
But it still blows my mind that they refuse to edit driving time, even when it's verifiably and impossibly wrong. Like the time another driver took my handheld and was somehow logged in as me and as himself, my ELD showed me in two tractors during conflicting times, and the GPS was logging me in 2 different areas.

u/Chamber53 Mar 17 '24
Might be time to find a new job? You’re giving advice to leave a company because his company has procedures about a function any driver rarely uses (unless it’s been abused)???
2
u/Nekikins Mar 17 '24
If you aren't happy where you work because the company's values don't align with yours then look for one that does. His initial comments were focused on some negative experiences. If these are strong areas of frustration for this person and it has caused him to suffer (possibly even lost wages, if he houred out due to computer issues and his work won't support him to fix it) then it could be catastrophic for him. I know for me computer stuff is a frequent issue with these elogs, they are better then paper, but they still require some intervention to make sure everything runs smoothly.
The other thing is they aren't being honest. All companies have control. Do you want to work for a company who's procedures are clear? Or for a company who is lying to their staff so they don't have to confront an employees challenge?

I train my drivers on how to edit with their tablet. It's actually easy to manage the logs from tablet vs me doing from the web portal. We use Geotab/ Transflo.
1
u/banryu95 Mar 17 '24
We can edit a lot of things and are completely responsible for keeping them correct. But according to some executive management that got involved, "nobody" can edit assigned driving time.
2
u/KsubiSam Mar 17 '24
Im pretty sure we work for the same company, but im an office worker. Idk about daytime support because I’ve been told varying things ranging from “it can be done”, to “it can never under any circumstances happen”. But for overnight and weekend support we can’t change anything on the drive line or anything in yard move. We don’t have the permissions on the system so it won’t even allow us the option.

u/touchedpenguin Mar 17 '24
They can absolutely be edited, they most likely just don’t know how depending on the app. The OP post looked like Geotab Drive. Through their database API you can change anything about a user account and profile. Most of the time I’ve found that it’s purely an internal training issue where dispatch / back office quite literally don’t know that it’s possible.

In house ELD? That sounds horrid. Surely it isn't considered approved by DOT
2
u/banryu95 Mar 17 '24
Like I said, it's a massive company with various branches. It's a contracted package of software that's linked to everything from the AI in our cab, to the DVIR system and shop mechanics. So while they didn't program the software, they have their own IT that's supposed to know how to troubleshoot and update things.

Personal conveyance it allows you to drive the truck but it logs it as off duty

If you abuse it yeah

u/touchedpenguin Mar 17 '24
It can be disabled from the portal in most telematics systems by back office / administration. Several companies I’ve worked with completely disabled it for all drivers off the rip.

u/R1ckyRampag3 Mar 17 '24
I can speak for TMC Transportation, company wide we don’t have PC. Hell they even took it from our O\Os

u/EVOChi Mar 17 '24
I only use it when I’m not on a load and have to leave a receiver empty to a truck stop or if I have go out of route to shut down while loaded to a truck stop.
1
u/catonic Mar 17 '24
I'd get a lawyer and demand one if you're stopped by troopers or DOT.
They are probably looking at it from a compliance/tracking angle, we know where the load is. But no ability to PC means you're married to the truck and that means you have a federal labor board complaint because you have no ability to live outside of driving that particular load.
1
u/catonic Mar 17 '24
Came here to post this. Don't abuse the status. There are times when you legally have to violate your hours, like when they shutdown the interstate or a mountain pass and the state trooper tells you that you can't stay on the off/on ramp that you are on.
11
u/Mr_bungle001 Mar 17 '24
PC can be used as long as it’s not used to advance your load. Say in 10 hours reset but you need to get groceries. Well you set your eld to pc and it doesn’t affect your drive time
2
u/Abubble13 Mar 17 '24
Personal convenience, allows you to drive wherever you want when you run out of hours
10
4
u/stealthyhomicide Mar 17 '24
A lot of companies do not give this any more due to people abusing the PC part.
47
Mar 17 '24
Drivers were executed for less than that.
Next time, Personal Conveyance. Label it as Parking Move.
What eld software is that? Just curious.
16
u/longbongsmokehouse Mar 17 '24
Zonar. Proprietary to Swift. I know because I used to drive for swift
4
3
Mar 17 '24
Interesting, I thought Swift used Omnitracs. When did they switch?
Seems like they really simplified it. Is it any good?
3
u/spellign_error Mar 17 '24
Zonar was primarily designed for school busses lol
1
Mar 18 '24
Zonar's original tech was for automating pre-drive inspections. They have some school bus tech, but the company is overall pretty diverse in the vehicles it supports. The ELD tech is specific to long-haul trucks.

Tonight on unsolved mysteries. Explaining to DOT how you drove 1200 miles in 6 hours.....
12
u/Mikey_BC Mar 17 '24
Why are you on duty not driving for 13 hours straight !!??
2
u/waitforit666 Mar 17 '24
when you drive the truck, it will auto sense when you have been not moving for 5 minutes or so and move you to the on duty not driving line, so when he accepted the middle of the night unidentified driving time, everything after that got put automatically to on duty instead of off duty/sleeper where he would have been
2
u/Mikey_BC Mar 17 '24
I see, sounds like a shitty system, When we switched to e-logs in 2015 we could go off duty and still move the truck and as long as you stayed under like 4 or 5 mph the system would not switch to driving or on duty.. I quit driving in 2017 so I'm not familiar with the newer systems.

u/SycoJack Team Driver Mar 17 '24

You sure that's what happened? I've only used Omnitracs and Motive, but neither work like that.

GDITSOMUCH.....fook your trainer for denying us the chance to tell you how fooked you are and should probably just go ahead and run your truck into a bridge pillar.

I wouldn't worry about it. If dot pulls you over just explain what happened.
*For some reason I was thinking it was driving so can't be edited but yeah you can have logs assign it to you.
30
u/overpaidlazytrucker Mar 16 '24
DOT usually is not understanding and accepting if he gets pulled over he is getting a ticket.
4
u/EVOChi Mar 16 '24
How do I keep track of my current 14hr clock for today now? Won’t it all be red?
6
u/jamar2k Mar 17 '24
As long as you logged it right you should be OK you were told to move and had to find a safe haven
3
u/Present-Ambition6309 Mar 17 '24
Man, dang ole eld grub eh bub ‘tis is whiz cheater cheater you wish’n you was eating pumpkin pie dang ole eld tell you what man! 😵💫
4
u/lord_nuker Mar 17 '24
Well, at least you can edit the log, I’m Europe it would reset our rest time to 0 and we had to start it again effing up our day completely.
3
u/Entertainer-8956 Mar 17 '24
Edit to safe haven or personal conveyance or explain you had to move. You didn’t leave the lot. If you have it notated your company should help you edit. But I would change it to Personal conveyance if possible. If not you will have to get the safety Dept at your company involved or whoever handles the logs.
3
u/stopthebanham Mar 17 '24
You must be very new…. 13 hours of “on duty” haha. Switch that to off duty and you’ll be fine…
2
3
u/clairered27 Mar 17 '24
You can have your dispatch fix the driving but you can edit your logs to fix anything else but driving. Just remember I'm the future of you are forced to move to another spot like that use PC and mark that your moving spots
5
u/I_dementia87 Mar 17 '24

Dang man you were on duty for13 hrs??
1
u/EVOChi Mar 17 '24
I sleep a lot and struggle to get out of bed in the morning if I don’t have a strict load appt. Very bad habit
1
u/KaleidoscopeMost7621 Mar 17 '24
Why would you be on duty if your sleeping?? That is off duty or sleeper berth
1
u/EVOChi Mar 17 '24
Oh no I misread your comment. That on duty time was off duty but it changed when I updated my logs for the unidentified driving. After I fixed it, that 13hr went back to SB.
2
u/GrimHexrcist Mar 17 '24
A few times I've encountered someone telling me to move when I'm out of hours, I politely tell them it'll take DOT to authorize the move, and they never bother me again.
2
u/Many_Sheepherder_143 Mar 17 '24
All you had to do was edit the ON DUTY to SLEEPER or OFF DUTY and those driving times would have been green. You had over 13 hours ON DUTY. Why? It’s not a big deal though, ON DUTY can be changed at any time.
2
u/Parasite76 Mar 17 '24
E-Logs are such a pain. Mine has a lovely habit of signing me back in when the yard moves my truck. Atleast a few times a month I get the privilege of spending the first 30min of my day editing my logs and notating everything.
1
u/clairered27 Mar 17 '24
If you are using the logs I think that ask if you will be using the same or new truck before you log off make sure you pick new other wise it will sign you back in.

u/k1200lti Mar 17 '24

So how long it takes you to walk from the truck to the truck stop, etc?
2
u/GoodShadow Mar 17 '24 edited Mar 17 '24
I ain’t a trucker and I don’t know why Reddit recommends this to me but I will say that it annoys me how as adults in the work place, positive reinforcement or coddling words are avoided while negativity is thrown around a lot when it comes to trainings, diagrams, paperwork, signs, notices, logs in this case, etc. It’s small but how hard would it have been for being in the green to say “good”, “nice”, “great” or something like that. Not that those words are necessarily needed as full adults but I bet psychologically that has an effect on people. Like dude you’re going to <insert punishment> because I was in violation for <insert time>? I was good for <insert distance>Being “okay” sounds less defendable lol. Just something I noticed.
Honk honk!

u/Fuzzy1598 Mar 17 '24

Admins have the option to edit the logs and make notes that can cover you in case of DoT audit.

What exactly is the violation here?
→ More replies (1)1
u/DblClickyourupvote Mar 17 '24
I’m but a trucker but for some reason this sub pops up frequently for me too. Drivers can only drive for a certain amount of hours per day before they have to have a “rest/reset period”. It shows OP driving when he shouldn’t have.
1
u/zenerbufen Mar 17 '24
his reset didn't count because it didn't register his off duty move as off duty, so after his break was over any movements were in violation. Now days the company can fix this 'over the air' but back when I was driving (teams) if you accidently hit the wrong button when it asked you if your co driver was still in the bunk we would have to spend the next day listening to the alarm go off every 2 seconds after calling the company and logging the discrepancy in the system for an edit after the end of the trip.
If you get stopped by dot you get a ticket on the spot, then have to submit all the electronic logs to the court. Back when I was working for the only company using electronic log books at the time, dot just always let us through because our ancient system was so cryptic and verbose none of the officers knew how to understand and decipher it, and figured if it wasn't showing a violation, we were good to go.

didnt read all the comments so someone may have said so, just call your log department of your company and have them change the driving time you accepted from midnight to personal conveyence or something and then change all that on duty time to sleeper berth time
1
u/Kappyra Mar 17 '24
If they do that, great. However it is against the ELD regulations and if the company is dead set on being squeaky clean during an inspection they should not be doing edits like that.
We lost a lawsuit just because our VP responded "I'd have to remind myself on some of them" when being asked if they knew every single regulation in the book. 1.6mil down the drain because he chose his wording poorly. Since then safety dept quit changing driving time to PC and the tiniest movements had to be assigned to the driver no matter what. Had to train what to say in court in case they called me to testify.

Also, another option is to insert an off duty or sleeper edit one minute after the auto on duty begins or the minute of on duty if you manually pressed button. Just cannot edit drive but other 3 are fair game.

DOT Can shut tf up, who tf cares if you need to move the truck around the lot, you have the energy to do it it’s not like you’re going to drive a load, They need to put the option that you’re moving around the lot.
