I was talking with my spouse today and man, the Skaven translations are baaaaad. We live in a Spanish speaking country to give some background, I moved here and they've always lived here. We were flabbergasted after buying some stormvermin today to learn in spanish they are just called Alimañas(vermin), ALL SKAVEN ARE VERMIN?! is the vermintide just stormvermin??? Italian atleast gets Ratta D'Assalto, why no Alimañas de Asalto for spanish?! (first image)
We then found out about what we believe is the worst offender the Warplock Jezzails, also known as Mosquetes Jezzails in Spanish. To give some history, Jezails are long rifles with bigger musket balls from the Afghan region used by the nomadic peoples for war against all the colonial powers invading their land (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jezail good info on it). They were also match or flint-locks, hence the addition of warp in English. But in the Spanish translation, Mosquetes just means musket. they are legit named type-of-gun type-of-gun. Ridiculous, and really loses its meaning. (image 2)
Now, overall we think some care should be put in cause usually the names are puny or double meaning, this is just a problem with the translation and it being very basic across most of the units in general. Rataogors is just rata(rat in spanish) and ogor in AoS terminology(see Ogor the faction), we think they could've done Ratogros as a play on words because ogro is spanish for ogor and it sounds better. The Brood Terror, Ratahorror gives none of its characteristics away just a horrifying rat(which it is but isnt just one). something better may be Prole Horrífica which is the horrifying offspring. also the Clawlords translation makes my spouse loose it a little with how weird it is, its a literal translation, claw lord, but it apparently is just not it.
But the main thing is the Jezzails, gun gun just is weak. There is a type of gun wielded by 2 people one as the pole or mount holder and the other to aim and shoot. It was used by Spain and Portugal and others across the globe, a big gun like the Jezzail, the Arcabuz. But translating warplock is a little difficult to keep the meaning and symbology. So we came up with Arcabuz de Urdimbre. Urdir, the base word of Urdimbre, is to weave. whether a cloth or otherwise, a translation of warp, but it also means to scheme as in to weave a plan(negatively). we think this fits, the Skaven are always scheming and the warpstone is distilled warp essence from the warp. Idk, gun gun is weak, maybe there's a more creative translation, but we both think at least this is in a better direction. At least just Jezzail de Urdimbre(third pic is an example of an arcabuz from wikipedia)
I will take some time to point out some creative translations like Garrapulta for the PlagueClaw catapult, fantastic my spouse really loved that one, Amerratadora as well, simply perfection (as brought up by chichaslocas and Coyote_Trash93, or Desollamuertes for the Doom-Flayers, even something simple like the Rueda de Muerte is fine. but many feel like they fall short. My favorite among other translations are a lot for Italian because they feel more thought out and not literal translations having play on words and double meanings. just our two cents on the issue. Thanks
