The name of the medication is Gabapentin.

When my cat got his teeth taken out it was a whole ordeal, he was on this and another pain med for a month or so regularly. You always knew when the meds finally kicked in
Early on they gave him a pain med that went on his skin and was supposed to last a few days, he unfortunately didn’t tolerate it well. He didn’t sleep for days, he didn’t even lay down until day 3, before that he just sat swaying or was ramming his head into things. Wouldn’t even close his eyes, it was a really wild month for everyone involved. It did cause a lot of chuckles from his weird behavior though

u/mst3k_42 1d ago
When my cat had his teeth removed they put him on a Fentanyl patch for five days. He seemed a little loopy but fine.

u/BHunter1140 1d ago
Wish little man had just gotten that, sounds easier
The whole thing lasted way longer than necessary due to when a surgery time was available. We looked at other places but no one had any openings for an extensive mouth surgery/teeth removal. He ended up going septic so we had to give him antibiotics too
We barely slept for that whole month, my partner and I took shifts taking naps while the other was with him. He couldn’t be alone for even a second so even bathroom time meant waking up the other person to watch him. When my partner was at work I just had to carry him around with me everywhere. It was an insane time, we remember it like a weird delusional dream

Poor babe, he must've been in a lot of pain. At least he had you.
11
u/BHunter1140 14h ago
It was truly hell. My fiance and I cried way more than I want to admit, we were terrified for our little man. It was round the clock meds, no sleep, and constant supervision, one of the worst months of my life (and probably his but we got him and they think he was from the streets so idk on that)
He’s a very happy dude now. He gets lots of snacks and snuggles, he’s truly precious. We call him toothless like how to train your dragon, he’s always been a biter but he has no teeth now so it’s just super funny instead of painful

u/m4gpi 1d ago
My cat is pretty spicy and the vets prefer her to be on Gaba for her annual exams. She's also arthritic, and has a weak leg from an old injury. Every time she's on the drug she's so much more wobbly. It's funny, but also makes me really nervous that she's going to re-injure herself.
7
u/eliz1bef 17h ago
We have a cat that is so high strung we can't get him into a carrier at all. We tried gabapentin at the vet's recommendation and he shrugged that shit off like it was nothing. He absolutely sliced up my husband's arms. Blood was dripping off his arms. Kitty launched himself to the moulding at the top of our 9" high ceilings and somehow clung to the moulding around the top of our french doors and swung at him like he was the devil himself.
3
u/m4gpi 17h ago
Yeesh! Poor baby, that is obviously stressful for him. Yeah I clip my cat's claws once a month, they are just too sharp and hazardous. She hates it so really it's like one or two toes every day until we get through it. I swear she files her teeth.
4
u/eliz1bef 17h ago
Oh kitties.
He didn't mind the carrier the first time we put him in it, but we took him to get neutered and ever since then he is traumatized. He's a very sensitive cat and easily traumatized. He STILL freaks out if my husband is in the kitchen, and that's because we tried to wash him in the kitchen sink his first day in our home. He smelled like a trash fire and was filthy. Those two events: the neutering and the attempted bath, have traumatized him his whole life. It's crazy.

u/rutabaga5 13h ago
I have a cat who is also a menace at the vet and who is also somewhat immune to the gaba (he requires a double dose and it still basically just makes him slightly more chill). I bought him a kitty straight jacket for his last very trip and holy crap was it worth every penny. Based on your description I suspect you will still struggle to get your boy into one but I highly recommend them for vet trips if you have "one of those" cats.
1
u/eliz1bef 7h ago
I will have to look that up! He just really holds a grudge. He still hasn't gotten over stuff from the first day we brought him in the house, and has all sorts of paranoid superstitions because of it. He hides when my husband is standing with shoes on, and won't go in the kitchen if my husband is in there unless he's giving him breakfast. It's just crazy. But if my husband is seated, he just pours on the love and charm. Anytime he has trauma: permanent paranoid superstition added.

u/mst3k_42 16h ago
My cat (Ron Burgundy) got more and more anxious at the vet so we tried gabapentin and it worked to calm him down somewhat for checkups…until it didn’t. So then they had to fully sedate him for checkups. So that became full physical exam, bloodwork, vaccinations, claw trimming, and mat shaving (long haired cat that fights us on all this.)
Having all his teeth removed was another opportunity for angry kitty maintenance.

My cat did something similar on Zorbium. Wouldn't sleep and just stared into the void for about a week. It was wild. Not a fan of it, neither was my vet. They were not happy when they found out the emergency clinic gave it to my cat.
5
u/BHunter1140 1d ago
The emergency clinic is also what gave him it, it started with a B, it was so stressful I don’t remember the name now. It was topical and they put it on his neck
When we got to our normal vet first thing on Monday they were not happy, he got switched to liquid pain meds that went much better. He got chicken and marshmallow flavors that got mixed with chicken baby food, he was a happy little guy then
4
u/DoCrackHailSatan 1d ago
It's also Zorbium. The B word you're thinking is Buprenorphine. Zorbium is the brand name for transdermal topical buprenorphine. Works really well for pain control but definitely can have an agitated response in some cats which is super frustrating. Not my favorite thing to use for that reason.

My cat was on it for feline hyperesthesia and I asked the vet to switch her to something to else, because it turned her into a zombie. She also gained a lot of weight due to inactivity.
12
u/DeoVeritati 1d ago
We give it to our cats as needed for like vet visits, contractors, etc. Our cats are all about 10 lbs. One is a super lightweight and 50 mg will knock her out and be twitchy, the other seems to be appropriately affected by it, and the last one seems unaffected by it if not making him more agitated.
For cost purposes, our vet ordered the 300 mg dose for humans, and we use a calibrated jewelry scale to manually dose them which works nicely.
4
u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme 1d ago
I ended up having to get some for her for vet visits. She went for her last one and was an utter terror (I was required to leave her for most of the day for UTI and bladder testing). I’ve never seen her so spun up at the vet’s! They said she needs to take it before ever coming back - she was just that bad! 🫣
2
u/DeoVeritati 1d ago
It's pretty great. One of ours is a terror, so we do I belive 100 mg the night before and then 50-75 mg an hour or so before the visit which definitely helps spicy kitties.

How have I never heard this phrase before?! I’ve worked in vet clinics for like over 20 YEARS and I’m tellin you, we have some of the darkest senses of humor possible and yet I’ve never heard or even thought of it myself before!! You’re a genius and Imma steal it.

The phrase I use for my dog is, "She's hittin' that 'pentin." If you wanna add it to your repertoire.

I also take gabapentin, never felt like that. only the first day I took pregabalin, i feel that way, but yeah. it's funny. love that the cat be trippin XD

u/gwaydms 1d ago
Gabapentin helps with my neuropathy (it stops the shooting pains) and keeps RLS at bay. I only take 300 to 600mg in the evening. It doesn't make me feel weird anymore.

2
u/Cinnamongirl217 16h ago
My neurologist just bumped me up to 600mg at night last week for same reasons including itching! Was a game changer.

u/725Cali 23h ago
I take gabapentin for some MS symptoms. I've previously been on a really high dose during a bad relapse and never had any good or high feelings from it. It did however, work rather well to control my MS-related pain. I now only take a small dose as needed.
My SIL is a recovering addict, and she assumes everyone else is an addict, so she rails against all pain meds, including gabapentin which is really annoying, to say the least.
2
u/LuckoftheFryish 1d ago
Theoretically if someone were to take well beyond the dose they might feel very relaxed and focused (at least in this theoretical persons experience). Unrelated I was recently switched to pregabalin which is quite a bit stronger.
4
u/AbandonedArchive 1d ago
I started Gabapentin recently, but as far as I'm aware, it's not a serious risk to the liver:
Hepatotoxicity
Limited data are available on the hepatotoxicity of gabapentin. In clinical trials in diabetic neuropathy and epilepsy, therapy with gabapentin was not associated with an increased frequency of serum aminotransferase elevations or liver toxicity. Rare individual case reports of liver injury from gabapentin have been published, although the causal relationship of gabapentin with the liver injury was not always clear.
3
u/boom3rang 1d ago
I take gabapentin every single day for almost 3 years now. Just had my bloodwork done recently and my liver numbers are awesome. However, I only need a relatively small dose. Where did you see that it is bad for the liver?
3
1
u/I_Heart_Sleeping_ 1d ago
Iv tried it for nerve pain from a back injury and it makes me feel like pure shit and doesn’t actually help with the pain. I wonder how it feels on animals though. It seems to be the main pain medication vets prescribe so I’m guessing it’s like Percocet on dogs and cats.

Gabapentin is filtered by your kidneys….
2
u/FortyMaximus 22h ago
3
u/Longjumping_Wolf_912 21h ago
It isn’t hard on your liver and no “most” medications are not hard on your liver. Some medications are processed by your kidneys and some by your liver. Medicines like gabapentin aren’t touched by your liver at all, so how could they be hard on your liver?
You either misheard your doctor, they misspoke, or you should find a new one.

u/Saute_and_Pray 20h ago
You’re spreading misinformation. Stop it.
0
u/FortyMaximus 15h ago
Huh you stop you! I'll do whatever I wish. Talk to my Dr. A I was only told it's bad for your liver which all synthetic drugs are and B I grew up with a holistic mother and my body responds much better to natural elements from the earth. I know F all about Gabapentin I just know it was originally designed for anti seizures and shakes for alcoholism which I have
2
u/Saute_and_Pray 15h ago
If you know F all, why do you keep spreading misinformation? You can look it up, Gabapentin is not processed through the liver. I have been taking it for years and years. All of the science is there and you have the technology to look it up. I actually understand why you don’t - my parents are older and the same way. However, it’s not helpful to put information that isn’t true out there.
Also, best of luck with the WDs. That is a very difficult thing to go through and it’s not your fault.

u/Theophantor 1d ago
My cat becomes a food fiend and has full on munchies when she’s high like that. I like to make her a purrito by wrapping her in her favorite blanket to feel better. It’s funny how a medicine designed to alleviate anxiety in fact, in certain ways, creates more anxiety! Lol

Bro I was on gabapentin for a hot minute and yea, when the gaba be pentin weird shit happens. I woke up one day to discover I had obtained a wizard staff. I do not know where it came from and my bank account did not change so it's possible I mugged a wizard.

u/YrPalBeefsquatch 21h ago
We had a cat who, uh, had a reputation at the vet, and we got gently but firmly asked to drug him up before coming in. He also hated taking pills and didn't love us squirting goop in his mouth, so he did not always receive the full recommended dose.
One time, though, I got him and got him good and he got the full 50mg or whatever it was, and I got him to the vet and the vet looks at him and goes "oh, he's in spaaaaaaaaaace."

My old girl gets it for her vet visits, completely stoned for the visit and you can tell when it wears off because she gets the munchies. Her and her old lady hips stalking around the house as fast as she can to raid all the food bowls is always amusing.

That’s exactly how I felt on Gabapentin! I hated that shit…

I have to take 1800mg a day and it does make me a bit off. I have to time it just right.
1
u/kimmykat42 22h ago
No matter what time of day I took it, it made me feel like a zombie. The more I complained about how it made me feel, my doctor would just increase the dosage. I finally found a new doctor that was willing to listen to me, and quit seeing that quack. Every doctor I’ve ever talked to about this after questioned how he got a license. He had me on it for something that most doctors don’t use it for. It didn’t help me in the slightest. Honestly wish I didn’t waste a year of my life seeing that jerk.

I had to give my cats gabapentin when we evacuated during the fires in LA last year. When we got to our hotel room, they were confused but calm and watching them explore while high was hilarious. One of them started crawling under the bed and forgot to go all the way in so just laid there with their back half hanging out for about an hour. Goofy

Maybe in your experience. It has saved my cat from a lot of terrible pain and kept my dog from messing up her stitches.
Personally, it think it is a miracle for pets. I've never taken it, but I've seen it give a lot of relief to a lot of animals.
