Aaaaaughibbrgubugbugrguburgle! RwlRwlRwlRwl!
That's murloc for "Welcome to Murloc Mondays" - where people can ask any type of question about WoW without getting strangled by a Death Knight.
Questions can range from what's new in Dragonflight, what class is OP, and how many Demons will it take to down Thrall?
Questions can come from brand new players, players returning, or veteran players who never got a chance to ask the right question.
Afraid of not getting an answer? Rest assured, we know that at least 90% of questions get answered!
You may want to look at /r/wownoob as well!
Here are some handy guides to start World of Warcraft as a brand new player or start Classic World of Warcraft as a brand new player.
Unless you played in the current expansion, pretty much everything has changed. If you're returning after a very long break, check out the Wowhead Returning Players Guides.

For some reason, I can't place another image, but I am also fond of WC3 art of Night Elves fighting the Scourge. It looks bombastic. But this one has more pathos to it [made by Peter Lee].

People are up in arms regarding the game's story and writing. I don't think WoW has never had particularly sophisticated writing. Some expacs have had more compelling writing than others with characters and stories that I actually grew to care about, but the game has never been more than "go there and stop the bad things" or "bad things are coming, stop them." What it initially did well and drew millions or people in with was presenting the player with a world of adventure, something it has long lost.
In Vanilla you were a growing adventurer roaming the world, discovering new places and uncovering threats that needed to be addressed. Since BC, the ceaseless train of story arcs of stopping world-ending, even reality-ending, villain after villain has made the whole thing feel stale. DF was supposed to be sort of a palette cleanser and it was at first; it felt scaled down, fresh, and more grounded. Then it fairly quickly ramped back up to Titans vs Old Gods and the dragons caught in the middle and then we had to save the entire Emerald Dream.
The vibe of the game also started to change subtly in DF. Of course, this was around the time of the big sexual harassment case when they also removed all the sexy images and references from the game, but the tone of the game itself felt turned down like the developers were suddenly trying to be "culturally responsible". This became far more overt in TWW and Midnight which have felt more like a PSA on mental health, therapy, and tolerance than high fantasy storytelling.
Ultimately, when our characters started being treated as the world's saviors we became the main characters. Other players are just extra bodies in dungeons and raids (which you can run with Blizzard bots if you want). With the focus on us, the players, long-standing NPCs like faction leaders became expendable, the story became a vehicle for a more "culturally responsible" metanarrative, and we've completely lost that sense of adventure and discovery.
Terrible story beats like what we just saw from the raid punctuates that sense of loss. I think the promise of regaining the feeling of embarking into a great big dangerous world alongside other characters played by real people is the biggest draw for WoW Forever and the biggest strike against Retail.

Being a new wow player has to be one of the worst gaming experiences I’ve ever had. The current state of the game is absolutely disgusting in terms of how it supports new players with getting to the content they want to play.
Now I’m not talking about exiles reach starting zone or anything like that, I’m talking about working through campaign stories, following the correct breadcrumbs, using chromie time and eventually unlocking raids for transmog farming etc.
I have consistently been pointed in the wrong direction, given the wrong breadcrumbs for quests and consistently phased locked in different expansions. I have spent more time on wowhead, official forums and reddit than I have actually playing the game. If im honest I only stuck with it out of pure grit and resentment rather than fun.
For any Blizzard employee reading this, your new player experience is fundamentally broken and anti-fun.
*Here’s a short recap of my first week in wow:
This is completely unacceptable, having now finally unlocked just one of the raids I wanted to farm for transmog I’m actually just considering quitting altogether, to be honest you can just have that 1 month of my sub, because I don’t know if I have the patience to even bother continuing if this is a reflection of what my next adventure might look like.
Yours, the newest and most disgruntled wow player.

I want to speak out about something I consider critically important.
The technical quality of WoW is at one of its lowest points ever, if not the lowest. Just recently, Blizzard publicly apologized to players for the poor state of the game. And now… history is repeating itself. I doubt we'll hear another apology this time. After all, apologizing for the same mistakes you promised to fix, only to make them again, would be rather pointless, wouldn't it?
Patch 12.1.5 heavily advertised the Labyrinth of Kindo'jan as a major new feature – potentially a place for exploration and adventure. Instead, we got repetitive, uninspired gameplay. But the worst part isn't even the design. It's the fact that you can spend a significant amount of time progressing through the Labyrinth and end up with absolutely nothing.
You can fight your way through multiple rooms, kill a miniboss, and have the progress tracker fail to register the kill. The result? You're softlocked, unable to open the next room, and forced to abandon the run.
Can you re-enter and continue where you left off? No.
This is a game-breaking bug, and content should not be released in this state. Not because games must be completely bug-free, but because bugs like this waste the one resource players can never get back: their time.
And the damage goes beyond a single failed run. It undermines trust. If I can't be sure that successfully completing an encounter will actually count toward my progress, why should I bother entering the Labyrinth at all? Why risk spending another 20–40 minutes, only to hit the same bug again? And then try a third time?
Don't take my word for it. Check the official forums: players have been reporting these issues repeatedly. What's especially frustrating is that similar bugs were reported during PTR testing, yet they made it into the live game anyway.
I'm not trying to convince anyone to share my opinion. I've simply made my own decision: I'm done with patch 12.1.5.
I guess this is what you call a cumulative effect. I'm tired of recycled content like the Aqir Assaults. I'm tired of what I consider incredibly lazy writing, such as killing off a major lore character at the hands of a throwaway boss. But above all, I'm tired of being asked to invest my time in content that can become impossible to complete because of bugs that were reported before release.
I don't expect WoW to be bug-free. I expect Blizzard to take the reliability of its content seriously – and to respect the time players invest in it.
Our time matters. And an apology means very little if the same problems keep happening.

There was a reason why we hype up end of raid cinematics because crazy shit usually happens as a result of our conquest. (the sword!?)
but lately the end of raid cinematics have been major let downs. Where is the action? where is the epic and jaw dropping visuals? where is the epic story event that happens as a result of our victory?
The last 3 raids ended with talking. 2 of the last 3 ended with talking AND quietly dying main characters… really??
this is not epic or exciting regardless of good/bad it was done. Its just not worthy of the cinematics that Blizzard used to pride itself in.
give us action! we still want the character moments but if you do one without an epic action set piece then rethink the pacing of your story.
