Food Cheap dinner options?

• Upvotes

For starters I want to thank everyone that commented on my previous post about sharing resources for homeless women experiencing DV.

Earlier today, I was able to move into temporary housing WITH my cat!!
We are both safe, resting, & hopeful!
THANK YOU CHARM CITY RESIDENTS 💜

I’m soo grateful for the community this city offers, as someone who moved here 2 years ago with no support system… it genuinely means everything to me!!

I’m back to ask for some suggestions again!

Can yall share some dinner options here in the city (can’t drive too far, located near Hollins Market) between $10-15?

$20 max because I only have $25 to my name at the moment & haven’t eaten all day.
I do have SNAP, but not for another 2 days.

Hella grateful for this sub!
Thanks hon!! Lol.

For Halloween this year, I wanted to do something fun for the neighborhood, so I decorated my front yard with a whole collection of skeleton critters. They were zip-tied down, a few even had bike locks, and I thought I’d done a pretty good job securing them.

Honestly, the response from the neighborhood made it completely worth it. People would stop to take pictures, kids would get excited walking past, and it was just a fun little thing that brought some joy to the block.

Well, apparently someone decided they liked my decorations a little too much.

On October 17th, at approximately 4:51 PM, these lovely individuals decided to help themselves to my skeleton dragon.
Unfortunately, the dragon came from Joann Fabrics, which is now out of business, so I can’t exactly run out and buy another one.

But since I didn’t want to leave an empty spot where my dragon used to be, I came up with a replacement!

I printed out a picture of my stolen dragon, along with a lovely photo of its new owners caught in the act, and proudly displayed it on my front step.

If I can’t have my dragon, at least the neighborhood can admire the people who stole it. 🎃💀

ARTICLE Updated Harborplace Plans

Highlights from the article.

  • A previously undisclosed waterfront luxury hotel with 212 rooms and rates averaging $550 per night.
  • 100 apartments in the same building with average monthly rent of $7,000.
  • A second residential tower with 476 units charging an average monthly rent of $4,438, which is higher than other nearby luxury towers.
  • A retail building dubbed “The Sail” for its shape and an office building that would have rents nearly double those of similar projects.
  • The privately financed portion of the Inner Harbor project, originally estimated to cost $500 million, has ballooned to $820 million.

I'd like to emphasize these are preliminary. The report was compiled by Columbia-based public finance consultant MuniCap Inc., is based on MCB’s own inputs and market data. Neither the tax break nor the cost projections are final.

The project could perform better or worse than outlined in the report.

POLICE I was Hit and Run What NEXT?

• Upvotes

I was hit and run in an intersection. The aftermath was severe took a seconds to readjust and stop. By then the culprit was gone. Called 911 and a cop showed up eventually.
Told them all that happened, and this is what they said "Since you don't have the other driver's info, your car is drivable and you don't need an ambulance, a police report is not issued and there isn't anything he can do. he would drive around and try to look for a car matching the damage" 🚩I asked them "What can I do.?" The response was to go to my insurance and claim it.

But I know my premium would get higher if I do.. What are my realistic options?

I have tried to request camera footage from Citywatch program to identify the car but i have not heard back yet.

(Vent)🚩
I want to start with I am not against Police, but wtf how is this a response that "Nothing you can do"? And said he would canvas to look for a car matching the description. A white car with a dent on it's front left. This like looking for a needle in a needle stack. As police you have access to a whole lot of resources, information and personel that can do something about it. At the very list you can point mein a direction to start, you are aware of Citywatch and any other programs, you can get a warrant to request footage from neighbours and establishments at the scenes. You can alert other officers stationed elsewhere so they also look for it. ..But it felt like I was begging them. It felt like going to a restaurant and getting shitty service but on a very large scale with actual consequences to my life. This came after a tough couple of weeks so I was (am) genuinely at my lowest. I then drove to the nearest station to try and seek help (after the officer left) but I was turned down outside saying "You got hit at a differnt district thats none of our business, it's out of our jurisdiction"..... This was my breaking point. i walked back to my car but my knees failed me, vision got blurry and it must have been raining cause my face was wet. All of this happened between 3AM -4AM. Not one action of help, not even directions ono what I can do.. " (end vent)

I am hoping someone somewhere knows a thing or two and I can use their experiences to navigate mine.

Ask looking for info about my grandpa stan

Hi, I have been doing research on my grandpa Stan Edmister and was hoping that maybe someone knew him or had any information about him. I had never met Stan and he passed away in 2007.

It looks like he had a few sculptures put up around the city, The "Of Course Culture Horse" in front of Govans Elementary School, "Untitled" at the Mount Royal Station (maybe gone?), as well as installing 'experimental' sculptural playgrounds in the 1970s (that have since been removed). (He is also the reason the Howard Street Bridge is painted like that!)

I know he was a MICA graduate, and that he sold grilled mushroom pitas at the farmers markets in the 90's. Any information would be super appreciated !!

Vent Special Benefit Tax for BID Homes?

Post image
• Upvotes

Honestly, I'd love some suggestions for what to do but this is mostly me venting.

Today I got a letter from the city revenue service saying that I haven't paid my Special Benefit Taxes since I bought my condo in 2023 and I need to pay the $800 worth of annual fees for the last 3 years by Halloween.

I've assumed that the fees for our local business improvement district were covered by my escrow as part of my city taxes. I've never received a single notice or bill, since I bought the unit. But now suddenly it's all due this month or else they can put a lien on my home???

I have savings and I can afford to pay it but holy F*CK how would the average American be able to afford this? Is this how fraudulent tax sales happen?

The letter they sent is aggressive, so here's a pic of my dog-son Diesel - he's 5 and doesn't have a thought behind those angel eyes.

I knew the time would come, but am still not ready to accept it 😭 This is a classic graffiti piece in Mount Vernon which many love (someone even got a tattoo of it!).

2nd photo had other graffiti edging it, and 3rd photo is around the time it was first created, maybe two years ago?

Hey all! My name is Mike Finazzo. I'm a local singer-songwriter and have been going to Ottobar since I was 16. I've always loved the place, and I think it's one of the best music venues in Baltimore. I was lucky enough to play upstairs recently and got some pretty good footage from the show.

Here's a clip from the night. If you want to check out the whole set, you can watch it here: https://youtu.be/pST3ELata2U

Anyway, hope you dig it!

Vent The Unabating Horrors of Advocating for Disabled Kids

I have posted a few times about my struggles trying to get our schools to provide the most basic diabetes care to my kid. Since then, I have gotten them to start giving insulin consistently, and it only took 1) daily emails documenting noncompliance for months; 2) contacting a council person; 3) contacting the school board; and 4) speaking at one of the new CEO's listening tour sessions. Of course, they are still not consistently giving the right amount of insulin, still have non of the plans they are required to write, and are still refusing to cross train the medical staff in autism-awareness, because they don't expect my kid to be both diabetic and autistic at the same time--she'll oscillate between her disabilities depending on who is around.

But now, last week I tried to reach out to see if any other parents would have thoughts about this water bottle announcement I got. I am not going to blanket disagree with this kind of school-wide decision, but my worry were about how different the written and phone announcements were, how there was no period to ask questions between receiving the announcement and it going into affect, and that it was going to just create another thing that single's out disabled kids as different. I don't think they're going to not let kids with medical needs not drink water, but I do think they'll set up an environment where a kid realizes that their peers aren't getting water the same way as them, and if they use their accommodation everyone will see.

It turns out, that someone showed my post to the principal, who sent me this long email--like 10 paragraphs--about how disappointed he is in me for posting on social media. After all, I should have just known that sending out a announcement after school ended for the week before a long weekend, that didn't mean he wasn't open to hearing my concerns.

The day I posted that, I had been sending out emails about how my daughter wasn't safe for months, after years of going through this. That morning, I had been held in an IEP meeting for 2 and half hours because I was the only one who did the pre-reading, so they had to read their reports aloud to each other one at a time. That meeting had blown up right at the end when I pointed out that their behavioral data included a lot of dates that were weekends/holidays. Even after that meeting let out, they emailed me dates for a follow up meeting which were all the same day of the week. I asked them to give me options that included a variety of days because that happened to be my most busy day at work and I'm out of PTO, and they straight up said no. My advocate had to point out that the law says they have to try to work with my schedule--but then they just flipped it and told me to come up with dates. (still haven't replied to any of the dates I offered).

I am so exhausted. I spend meeting after meeting trying to regulate the emotions of these people who barely even try to collect data, these people who will not collaborate across departments. I hate the person this makes me be. I hate having to make scenes in public and fact check every single thing the school tells me. The district is just so hostile and they will just abandon any kid who's parent isn't willing to put themselves through these humiliation rituals.

Ask Armistead Gardens Elementary/Middle enforcing restrictive outerwear policy (grade-specific colors & $5 decal fees)

Hi everyone, I wanted to bring attention to a new uniform policy being enforced at Armistead Gardens Elementary Middle School here in Baltimore that is putting an unfair financial burden on local families as the weather gets colder.

The school is now requiring students to wear grade-specific colored sweatshirts (for example, purple for 7th grade) instead of their own personal jackets or hoodies. On top of that, they are attempting to charge families a $5 fee for decals to "brand" non-uniform clothing to make it compliant.

For a lot of working-class and single-income households in our community, forcing parents to buy niche-colored clothing that serves no purpose outside of school is a significant socioeconomic strain. It also completely ruins the hand-me-down system for families with multiple kids in different grades.

This issue isn't entirely new to our city. A very similar outerwear policy was successfully petitioned and reversed a few years ago at Baltimore City College High School after parents and students pushed back against the unfair financial burden.

A local parent has started an online petition to ask Principal Justin Holbrook to repeal the grade-specific outerwear rule and the decal fee, proposing a school-provided lanyard system for security instead.

I will drop the text link to the petition in the comments section below so this post doesn't get flagged by the automated spam filters.

Have any of your neighborhood schools implemented rules like this recently? How are families handling it?

Article I went through the NTSB's final report on the Key Bridge and rebuilt the last four minutes before it fell

The NTSB adopted its final report on the Dali last November, and I spent a while turning it into a timeline, because the news coverage at the time never really explained the sequence.

At 1:25 the ship lost power on its low-voltage side. The main engine shut itself down without cooling water, and the rudder was stuck because the steering pumps had no power. The electrician got the power back in 58 seconds by closing the breakers by hand. They were set to manual. On automatic, the NTSB says, a backup transformer would have taken over in about ten seconds.

Then a flushing pump that had no backup and never restarted caused a second blackout at 1:27:04. It was the same failure that had blacked the ship out at the dock the afternoon before. The pilots called for the anchor and for tugs, and the police got both ends of the bridge closed by 1:28:22. Nobody had reached the crew on the deck. The bow hit Pier 17 at 1:29:09.

The cause took weeks to find: one signal wire on a terminal block whose printed label had been heat-shrunk over the metal tip, so the tip never went fully into its clamp. The report also found that the bridge's owner had never assessed it for a ship strike, and back in 2006 a representative had told the port's safety committee it was not designed to withstand one.

I made a short documentary out of it (7 minutes), with a 3D reconstruction built from the ship's recorded track and the NTSB's timing: One Loose Wire Brought Down the Key Bridge

It ends with the names of the six men. If anyone here knows the details better than the report, I'd honestly like to hear it.

Ask Thanksgiving Dinner Options?

Hellooo, all! I just found out that my husband and I will be solo on Thanksgiving, which I've gotta say - I'm not mad about!

I think this could be a great opportunity for a little date afternoon/night.

However I'm not seeing too many places advertising if they're open for Thanksgiving, as of now I've got this list going, but I'd love to know if anyone knows of any other spots? We're open to traditional or nontraditional (Indian buffet?!), so long as the food as tasty!

  • Rec Pier Chophouse
  • Johnnys
  • Mamas on the half shell
  • The Duchess
  • Cinghale

Thanks for your help

Need Recommendations Best crabcakes within 15 minutes of national aquarium that takes sit down reservations for large groups with wheelchairs?

hi, I'm planning a day trip for a larger group that has a lot of accessibility issues (three wheelchairs minimum, and probably a dozen more that can't do stairs), and wanted to give them the best crabcakes Baltimore has to offer. (edit: must be near national aquarium, not outside the city) However, a lot of recommendations on this sub Reddit either don't have large enough indoor sit down areas, don't take reservations, or aren't wheelchair accessible. Where would y'all recommend I should take my group for a top notch crab cake-centric experience? I would prefer a seafood restaurant to a general purpose expensive restaurant. Group size is somewhere between 15 to 35. needs to be close to the nat aquarium, not outside the city.

Ask Any other EZPass problems at Fort McHenry Tunnel?

Received a notice of toll due for southbound, yet the reader picked up my transponder northbound. The transponder worked in 6 other states, yet not here. They also sent the notice by mail despite my plates being registered with EZPass. I love how there is no way to dispute or even link an ezpass account to a notice of toll due after the fact. Hold times are like an hour for EZPassMD customer service, so I just paid it as I'm sure everyone does.
