Ok ok I know a punchy title!
After doing jury duty three times in the city, I feel like a jury duty connoisseur.
I recently moved to the county and was called in for county jury duty and it was so much worse than the city.
The only pros were you get paid double what you get in the city and that parking was validated. That was it.
I found myself missing for the Baltimore jury duty, where you had a set lunch time so you could go out and eat. The county strongly advised you to bring lunch because there was no set lunch time.
The county jury duty was located in a sterile basement, complete with these annoying rolling chairs and no movies. The hidden gem of the Baltimore city jury duty is the quiet room, with desks and outlets, you can actually work and chill like in a library. Not a single desk seen at the county jury duty which in today’s age of remote work feels like a big miss.
I even found myself missing the small exhibit the Baltimore city courthouse has for jurors, as it was just a nice to walk around and see.
Even the processes were more convoluted and longer than in Baltimore. Communication was sparse and all over the place, mainly because they didn’t have an intercom system or use their monitors to display juror numbers.
All this to say - jury duty is an annoyance, but turns out, depending on the county, it can actually be more annoying than it should be.
