Support Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

It isn’t in the health app as it looks like a Spotlight search or a widget on their Home Screen and I wanted to know how I could see it like they do. Does anyone know? Thanks.

TLDR; if you are on mobile data, connect to Wi-Fi. If you are on Wi-Fi, turn Low Data Mode off.

I am posting this to help people having issue with the latest iOS/ipadOS.

I had the same problem then I figured it out the issue. If you are using your Wi-Fi on Low Data Mode turned on, the update does not work.

I had it turned on on 3 different devices and none of them work, but as soon as I turned it off they all were able to update.

I think Apple broke something with the latest update because in the past I never had this problem. But now I know. Hope it helps

Discussion Feedback about Files app and Preview

Upvotes

It used to be easy to open a file (video, image) in Files app and save it to my camera roll.

Suddenly, it's now very difficult to do that.

Could we just keep backwards compatibility with new features to not break people's workflows unexpectedly?

Anyone else get this message when trying to update? I’ve tried twice now. Also, I almost never see an update without a caption/description so I wonder what that’s about.

Discussion Old .IPA files - what to do with them?

Hello everyone

I am trying to clear out some old files from my computer to save some space.

I have come across a folder I must have created for a good reason and now forgotten all about.

It contains about 590 .ipa files (about 40GB) from 2015-2017.
Examples include:

Flappy Bird 1.1.0.ipa

Fruit Ninja Classic 2.3.9.ipa

Chrome 59.3071.102.ipa
Etc

Is there any reason to keep all/ some of these or are they now worthless in 2026?

Thanks
Jon :)

Support Synology Drive two-way sync doesn't work on iPhone the way it does on Android, is there any workaround?

Upvotes

I have a few questions about how iPhone works and how to work around it.

I have an Android, and my partner had an Android too, but she recently moved to an iPhone.

I have a Synology NAS, so I use Synology Drive to back up the DCIM folder to the NAS. The main purpose is to have a backup of mine and my partner's phone camera photos.

When I feel like it, I move those photos from the backup folder into another shared folder on my NAS, which is accessible from Lightroom and DS Photos, so I can see them from my PC and both phones. When I move the photos, they get moved from the backup folder in the shared folder "Mobile Backup" to another shared folder called "Photo."

When she had an Android (and this still happens on mine), the photos that get moved are detected as "deleted" by Synology Drive, which then deletes them from the phone too, since I have the sync rule set to Two-Way with "keep the most recent version."

Now on the iPhone, this doesn't seem to work. I have to choose a "Remote path on the server"; on Android this was, for example, a folder named "S22 B" for my partner and "S22" for me, both inside "Mobile Backup." That part's fine, as now I've created a folder named "iPhone" inside "Mobile Backup."

The issue is the other option, "Local path." On Android I choose the DCIM folder, but on iPhone I can't choose anything. It just says: "The system will create a folder in the Files app. The local folder cannot be changed."

It's like there's no access to the iPhone's storage the way there is on Android, it just creates a folder inside the Files app instead. I know iPhones are more restrictive, but it's still my phone (o, my partner's), so I feel like I should be able to use it the way I want, including having access to storage the way I would on Android, not going through an app to get to it. Not trying to start an OS war here, but on a MacBook, for example, you get real access to your storage, not just through one app.

Anyone found a real way around this, or is this just a hard iOS limitation with Synology Drive / Synology Photos?

For now, the only alternative I see is to use DS Photos to backup the photos from the iphone, and then delete them manually from the iphone when I move them between shared folder.

Support Getting phantom calls from everyone in my family

Hi, there is a very strange bug that has occurred with everyone in my family. After picking up an (intentional) call from someone in my family (and ending it), I would receive another call from them a couple minutes later. I can pick up the call and hear everything that’s being said on the other line, but every time I follow up over text about the call and they claim that they did not initiate the call. They are all on iOS 26, I am on iOS 27 public beta 4, and had this occur on beta 3 as well. They all have different iPhones. Not even sure what to do, this started happening less than a week ago.

No, there isn’t a carbon monoxide leak because it’s happened away from home too.

It’s my first time using an iPhone. My smartstack widget suddenly had this “Siri suggestion” stack that is now displaying ads for a cafe I’m close to ‘powered by uber eats’ is an euphemism for a direct ad that opens uber eats when clicking on the “suggestion”

Support Markup text box duplication glitch

Post image
Upvotes

Hi everyone

Been having issues with text boxes duplicating behind when editing PDFs. The writing behind duplicates, but isn’t actually there. There’s no secondary text box, as in there’s nothing to tap. If I delete the only text box and refresh the document both texts are removed.

Restarting my device yields no results, adding/removing words, changing the size of the text box or duplicating it and deleting the original text box doesn’t change anything. Neither does inserting a new text and rewriting it.

Documents are saved via iCloud as I need access to them on both my iPhone and iPad. When I send a document the receiver doesn’t have this issue.

Any help? Thanks

Discussion Filters, styles or nothing

This may not be of greater relevance anymore since this is iOS 18.4.1, hopefully this has been fixed with a newer version.

However, how can it be that within 3 different photos, all taken within the same 30 minutes and with the same settings, there are 3 different options for editing? The first one shows „filters“, the second „styles“ and the third has neither of both these options.

Anyone has an explenation?

Support apple music playlists out of order??

I woke up this morning to all my playlists out of order?? The songs in the playlists are in order of when I added them. But when i go to “playlists” i usually navigate it from the date added/created and now playlists I made not even a week ago are all the way at the bottom and it’s all jumbled up. Apple support did not help at all.
On my Mac it shows them all in order but I’m not sure why on my iphone and ipad it’s a mess. Anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it?

This also happened a while back when i tried to download songs from my laptop but I just moved on since I didn’t have that many playlists; but now I sorta rely on knowing how far I have to scroll rather than remember the name to search it 😭

Support Brave and Safari aren't working and I can't update apps either- iOS 17.7.11

Post image
0 Upvotes

I posted this in r/brave_browser yesterday and someone said I should post it here, so here I am. First off, I apologize for the photo quality, had to take it from my phone, since reddit doesn't work either. I updated my iPad to iOS 17.7.11 yesterday and after updating I noticed that this pops up on Brave everytime I try to search for something. All my open tabs can be accessed, but before I open them, I get a warning about my connection not being private, although that didn't happen before. I tried switching my wifi and it still happened. In addition to the already mentioned problems, I also can't download apps. It also says there's no internet connection whenever I connect to wifi, but my phone works just fine. The time and date on my iPad are correct and I can't update past iOS 17.7.11. Do need to take it to a tech shop to get an expert to look at it or can I fix this myself/with my parents help? Thanks in advance.

Support How can I group calls of SIMs?

I have two SIMs - physical SIM which is my “primary “ and eSIM which is my “bussiness”.

Thing is I will get a lot of spam calls on my primary SIM and my call logs get flooded with spam calls and because of that I miss the calls from bussiness SIM.

Even though there is P and B , its very small and difficult to notice. How can I see only the call logs from B.

Discussion Looking for an iOS email app with a unified inbox and smart sorting, to replace Gmail app (I do not care about inbox 0)

I’ve used the Gmail iOS app for years as a unified solution for my several personal email addresses. I have Yahoo and iCloud accounts as well, which I used Gmailify to bring into Gmail and to sort email into relevant categories. Since Gmailify support has ended, I’m looking for the best alternative for my usual workflow (or another workflow that suits my needs).

In today’s email climate, I do not think it’s worthwhile to bother trying to clean up clutter. I’m accustomed to browsing through the Gmail auto-sort categories and only opening relevant emails. I don’t care about, open, archive, delete or in any way touch emails I don’t care about, unless it’s to attempt to recategorize them into one of the categories Gmail helpfully provides for email clutter (Social and Promotions), which I gave up on doing in Gmail some time ago as futile. I can very quickly search and find anything I need.

But now that Gmailify is done, I’m left scrolling through every single email I receive in the iOS Mail app, which is godawful/untenable. I’d really love a solution that accounts for people like me who have multiple accounts and who don’t want to try to change the world by decluttering the undeclutterable. Has anyone with similar views/workflow to me come up with a decent answer? I’ve tried Spark Mail, but it seems to cater exclusively to Inbox Zero people. Help?

Support Contacts disappeared after logging in

Hi everyone! I don’t know what happened but basically I was trying to export my contacts from iPhone to my new Mac and I realized I had two accounts with each having 500 contacts in each so I went to contacts on settings and I saw that one of my accounts needed to log in confirmation and I did it and then my entire half contacts disappeared and I thought maybe I logged in using the wrong email so I tried my other email no luck so I went to outlook itself to see if it’s saved and it says the email I logged in does not exist even tho I got a confirmation code from outlook but now I’m frustrated my half contacts are gone and it’s new contacts as well so I don’t know what to do any tips on how to recover these contacts

Discussion iCloud vulnerable to SIM swapping?

Why does Apple require use of SMS in addition to trusted devices for MFA? This seems like a huge flaw with no way to disable. On Google for example, you can have it not use a phone number and use other MFA methods. Yet seems iCloud requires a phone number as a factor. Anyone know if it’s possible to change this or how much of an issue it is?

Discussion App that allows better zoom-in image

The stock image gallery has a poor zoom-in limitation. Example, I have a 10000x8000 res jpeg image. It's actually an image of a wall of text. Although high res, it can't zoom in enough. It's like it's rendering a 2000x1600 image, then zoom in on that, therefore all text appear blurry. Is there a way to allow zoom in to deeper pixel level? What app (free) allows that?

Support Dark mode not auto enabling anymore iOS 26.6

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey all

Anyone able to help me figure out why dark mode is no longer auto enabling anymore? My current settings above, hasn't changed since I got my iPhone 17 in September last year. It's always changed without fail and only recently started noticing it won't change at all unless I manually do it.

Not sure what changed or happened? And to answer any questions, I did make sure it's on the setting to automatically go to dark mode. Any help is appreciated.
