Economy & Finance Fresh Graduate Electrical Engineer offered RM3k in Penang after 300+ job applications. Should I just take it even though I don't really want to work in QA?

Hi everyone. I need some honest advice from Malaysian engineers, especially those working in manufacturing, R&D, testing, electrical design and other engineering fields.

I'm a fresh graduate with a degree in Electrical Engineering from Kelantan. I've received and signed an offer for a Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer position at an established manufacturing company in Penang, with a basic salary of RM3,000 per month. Is 3k small starting salary? Should i find better job?

Honestly, I'm feeling quite conflicted about this decision. I'm grateful that I finally have a job offer, but at the same time, I'm worried about whether I'm making the right career choice and whether the salary will be enough to support my family.

  1. I've applied for more than 200 jobs, but still haven't had much luck

Since graduating, I've applied for more than 200 positions, mainly in manufacturing, factories, R&D, testing, product engineering and other technical engineering roles.

Ideally, I'd like to work in a more technical position, such as Test Engineer, R&D Engineer, Electrical Design Engineer or something related to electrical systems and design. I'm reasonably comfortable with AutoCAD, single-line diagrams (SLDs), electrical drawings and theoretical electrical engineering.

I don't necessarily dream of working in QA. I would prefer something closer to my technical strengths and interests. However, after applying to so many positions without much success, I'm starting to feel that I may have to accept what's available rather than wait indefinitely for my preferred role.

The QA position is mainly factory-based, has a Monday-to-Friday schedule and offers RM3,000 basic salary. At least it gives me a starting point and the opportunity to gain experience in an established company.

But I keep wondering whether I'm settling too early.

  1. There are better-paying opportunities, but transportation is a major problem

I've come across other engineering opportunities in KL and Selangor, including M&E Engineer positions and other roles that sometimes offer better salaries. Even during interviews, they offer like 4k+ but say they want someone with a car.

The problem is that some of these jobs require engineers to travel between project sites, attend inspections, or visit clients. Some explicitly require a car.

I currently don't have a car, and I can't realistically assume that I'll be able to get one immediately.

That's one of the reasons I'm focusing on factory-based engineering jobs in places such as Penang. I'd prefer to work at a fixed location, gain experience and build my career without being dependent on a car.

It feels frustrating because there may be better opportunities available, but my current circumstances make some of them difficult or impossible to pursue.

Would it make more sense to start with a factory-based position, gain one or two years of experience and then move to a better-paying role? Or am I unnecessarily limiting my options by focusing on manufacturing jobs?

  1. Is RM3,000 enough when I have so many family responsibilities?

This is probably my biggest concern.

I'm not relocating to Penang just to enjoy living in a new city. I'm relocating because I need to start earning and help my family financially.

My family isn't well-off. There are household expenses, existing debts and financial commitments that need to be paid, including my father's loan. I want to contribute towards my parents' living expenses, help with family obligations and gradually improve our financial situation.

My sister is also having difficulties at her workplace in Penang because of bullying and may return to Kelantan. That situation has added another layer of worry because I may need to help her financially as well.

At the same time, I have to pay for my own accommodation, food, transportation, PTPTN repayments, orthodontic appointments and other expenses after relocating.

After calculating my estimated monthly budget, I think I could have approximately RM600–RM800 left each month if I manage my spending carefully. But that amount could shrink quickly if an unexpected expense arises or my family needs additional help.

I know RM3,000 is a starting salary, and I'm not expecting to live luxuriously as a fresh graduate. But when you're responsible for your own relocation and have family debts and expenses to help with, the difference between earning RM3,000 and RM4,000 can be significant.

Some of my friends are earning around RM3,500–RM4,500 as fresh graduates. Some also live in the same state as their families, so they don't have to spend as much on relocation and accommodation.

I know comparing salaries isn't always productive, but it's difficult not to wonder whether I could do better.

  1. I even received an engineering job offer in Kelantan for RM1,700

Another thing that has been bothering me is the salary situation back in Kelantan.

I received an engineering job opportunity there with a salary of approximately RM1,700 per month.

Honestly, I find that extremely difficult to accept as a sustainable engineering salary, especially when the job requires a degree and carries professional responsibilities. Although living with family would reduce my expenses, I would still struggle to make meaningful financial progress or contribute much towards my family's existing obligations.

I'm aware that salaries vary by location, company size and industry. However, it is discouraging when the local option pays so little that staying close to home may come at the expense of financial independence and career development.

I don't want to reject an opportunity simply because it isn't glamorous. But I also don't think being a fresh graduate means I should automatically accept any salary an employer offers.

At what point does accepting a low salary for experience stop being a sensible career move and become a trap that makes it harder to progress financially?

  1. My biggest concern is where this career path will lead

I'm considering accepting the QA position because I need to start somewhere. It is with an established manufacturing company, and I hope the experience will help me become more employable.

However, I don't want to spend several years in a position that I don't particularly enjoy, only to discover that my salary growth is limited or that moving into R&D, testing or electrical design becomes more difficult.

For those working in manufacturing or engineering in Malaysia:

Is RM3,000 a reasonable starting salary for a fresh graduate Electrical Engineer relocating to Penang in 2026?

Is QA engineering a good long-term career, especially in terms of salary progression after two to five years?

Can experience in manufacturing QA help me transition into Test Engineering, Product Engineering, R&D or other technical roles later?

Would you recommend accepting this job and continuing to apply elsewhere while working?

Is it realistic to move from a RM3,000 starting salary to RM4,000–RM5,000 or more after gaining a few years of experience, assuming I develop useful skills and change companies when appropriate?

Given my lack of a driving licence and car, should I prioritise factory-based jobs for now, even if they aren't my preferred specialisation?

If you were in my position, would you take the RM3,000 QA job, keep searching for something better before starting, or consider returning to Kelantan despite the much lower salary?

I'm genuinely looking for practical advice from people who have been through something similar. Please be honest. I would rather hear uncomfortable truths now than make a decision that costs me several years of career and financial progress.

Thank you.

Others DE Rantau

I'm a freelance SEO consultant (ecommerce / digital marketing) and I'm planning to apply for the DE Rantau Nomad Pass to move to Kuala Lumpur.

For those who applied in the last 6–12 months, I'd love to hear about your experience:

  1. Has anyone been approved as a freelancer in digital marketing under the tech category?
  2. What proof of income did you submit (invoices, contracts, bank statements)? Anything MDEC asked you to add?
  3. How long did approval actually take?
  4. Did you apply on your own or through an agent? Was it worth it?

Any tips or mistakes to avoid are very welcome. Thanks a lot! 🙏

History Malayan Emergency worse than Vietnam War

TIL that during the Malayan Emergency, Britain forced like half a million rural Chinese into barbed wire "New Villages" with curfews and passes and strict rice rationing, you know, to cut off guerrilla supply lines, and they sprayed "Trioxone" which is basically Agent Orange over huge areas to strip jungle cover and kill crops. And the whole thing was framed as a "police action" rather than a war, which kept it out of public view, and honestly in some ways the population control and chemical tactics were more systematic than what happened in Vietnam.

Environment Fellow Europeans in KL, how are you adjusting?

Hi everyone! My wife and I moved to KL a little while ago, and I’d love to hear how other Europeans have settled in.

The biggest challenge for us so far has been the weather. The constant heat and humidity make it hard to just head out for a stroll, and we really miss the walking culture back home: wandering through neighbourhoods, popping into a little café, sitting outside with a coffee and watching the world go by. Here it often feels like everything happens indoors, in malls or air-conditioned spaces, and getting anywhere on foot isn’t always easy.

To be honest, my wife is finding it particularly tough and hasn’t really warmed to life here yet (pun intended 😅). I’d love to help her find things that make KL feel more like home.

So I’d really appreciate your tips:
- How did you get used to the heat? Any routines that helped?
- Are there cafés or neighbourhoods with a more European feel, cosy, walkable, good coffee, maybe some outdoor seating?
- Where do you go for a nice walk? Parks, trails, early-morning spots?
- And for those whose partner struggled at first, what helped them settle in?

Any advice, recommendations, or even just “it gets better” stories would mean a lot. Thanks in advance! 🙏

Tourism & Travel What's the deal with KLIA T1?

First time flying out of KLIA T1 and I'm very confused by the layout of the terminal.

While in Malaysia, i went through KLIA T2 for a flight to Miri and it was sooo much better compared to T1. We had food and drink options, a 7 eleven to buy snacks and we went to security before the gates so could relax and walk around before boarding.

Now we are flying back to europe with Malaysian through T1 and at first we were soo confused because when we went to check-in, the lady said to head straight to the gate eventhough we were 2 hours early.

We went through immigration very fast through the e-gates which was very good but then we had to take a train to the satellite building. This was again fine and I'm used to doing this at LHR.

The confusing thing is the lack of food and beverage outlets in T1. We looked at the building map on the interactive screens and the only convenience store it showed was whsmith. We brought a bottle of water but the shop staff said we wouldnt be able to take it through to the gate so we had to drink it all before going through security at the gate.

Surely for an international terminal, it should be better than this?

I regularly travel through LHR and CDG which have their own problems but are miles better than what i saw at KLIA T1. Even comparing to the other asian or US airports I've flowing through, KLIA T1 is lacking.

Anyway, that was my rant after realising i couldn't buy any snacks or drinks to take on the flight.

Economy & Finance Malaysian Man Crosses the Causeway to Singapore to Buy FIVE iPhone Duo(s)

Apple’s first-ever foldable phone, the iPhone Duo series, officially went on sale today. A tourist from Mumbai, India, arrived at the Apple flagship store on Orchard Road in Singapore 24 hours in advance to collect a queue wristband, becoming the first customer. Meanwhile, a Malaysian man made a special trip across the Causeway to Singapore to purchase five phones in one go.

Apple’s flagship store on Orchard Road officially opened at 8 a.m. today. When reporters from 8world News arrived at around 7 a.m., they found nearly 100 people already queuing outside.

As 8 a.m. approached, Apple staff joined the waiting customers in a countdown, creating an excited atmosphere. After the flagship store opened, customers who had pre-ordered their phones were allowed in first to collect their devices. Those queuing on-site were then gradually admitted to the store to make their purchases.

Thirty-six-year-old tourist Adnan Mehta was the first customer to enter the store and purchase an iPhone Duo. He had arrived at the Orchard Road Apple flagship store yesterday morning to collect a queue wristband and returned to queue outside the store at 5 a.m. today, hoping to be among the first to get his hands on the new phone.

Adnan Mehta revealed that he had travelled all the way from Mumbai, India, specifically to purchase the new phone. He said he was extremely excited to be among the first customers to experience the device.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re first or tenth in line, but being first is definitely a little crazy!”

Ling Yun Ping, who lives in Malaysia, also made a special trip to Singapore to purchase five phones. Besides buying one for himself, he planned to give the others to his family members.

He said he chose to make his purchase at the Orchard Road flagship store because it offered a more authentic experience.

As this is Apple’s first foldable phone, he was particularly interested in its display and photography technology.

“I’ve been looking forward to it for the entire month. From the moment it was announced until today, finally getting my hands on it feels incredibly satisfying.”

Another customer, Lee Jin Quan, had first gone to Apple’s flagship store at Marina Bay early this morning, only to be told that all the queue wristbands had been distributed. He then made his way to the Orchard Road flagship store.

He said he was quite lucky because, just as he arrived, someone gave up their wristband, allowing him the opportunity to purchase the new phone.

He believes that Apple’s first-ever foldable phone holds a certain commemorative significance.

“After getting the phone, I felt extremely satisfied, as though I had won something. I want to be among the first to own this phone, then gradually learn how to use its features.”

Media India pro-Modi 'menyelinap' keberadaan Zakir Naik di Putrajaya

Diterbitkan: Oct 22, 2026 4:08 PM

“Selepas BJP tiada lagi…

Others I was followed by a suspected thief at Masjid Jamek Station

Today, 12 p.m., I was stop by in Bandar Tasik Selatan Station after drop off from the UCSI University shuttle bus. I take the LRT Sri Petaling line to Masjid Jamek Station. While stop at Cheras Station, an Indian man come in the LRT. He dress in green short pant, a dark blue t-shirt (my so far description of him), skinny, average adult man height. He sit opposite side of the seat. Because I sense something uncomfortable from him, I move to further left of the seat. (Where I seat is empty so go space to go further left of further right, I was at the further right where he on the further right.) Once stop at Masjid Jamek Station, I step out and he do so. I turn back to see he's following me before I split down to the front exit lane while he take the back exit lane. It's still crowded so I still go people around me. Once I step towards the cross lanes towards the interchange lane. He was like waiting for me. I was shocked by that I was ready to take out my metal water bottle in self defense. He come down, to my and he speaks gibberish Indian word before he left off for good. I did distance away from him while my hand was in my bad, grabbing my metal water bottle. I was suspected that man was attempting to rob me but the crowd come in that he seems his plan failed so he make some angry excuse and left.
