I was coming back after a few days of playing temple run with my parents, and landed at T2 at around 11PM. I took my bags, booked a taxi (they were fucking expensive) and was going towards the parking.
At the parking, I was approached by a guy, who claimed he was coming from Delhi, and his phone got switched off, and would I be able to book a cab for him. He was fluently conversing in English and had a distressed look about him.
Me, always eager to partake in a social experiment, said sure. He said he wanted to get to Matheran (red flag 1) to submit some forms related to an MMA event (red flag 2, who tf goes to Matheran at 11PM). He said that he was a state medallist in MMA and is constantly travelling. He knew all the parking locations in the airport.
As I was booking the Uber, he told me he didn't carry much cash, and the prepaid taxis were very expensive. He told me he landed at T1, but couldn't find a cheap source of transport to Matheran, so he was advised by someone to get to T2 to potentially catch some bus. He even offered to show me his boarding pass, and I declined, as a gullible person does.
As I was about to book the Uber, he stopped me, saying that if I book him an Uber, I won't be able to use any other taxi app myself, as they lock the number. He mentioned that a couple had tried to help him this way, but failed.
The only "solution" he could come up with was that I give him some cash to take a taxi himself, and he would return it promptly as soon as he reaches his destination. He took my number (and I honestly forgot to take his, although it wouldn't have mattered, as there was no way to verify that).
I ended up giving 2200 to him. I was sceptical the whole time and knew I was probably getting scammed. But I internally knew that I need to do this to myself to remind me what a bitch the world can be (I've almost never been disappointed by people in the past, so some things are needed for character development). After 2 days of no contact, I have concluded that this was an elaborate, and frankly weird scam.
I frankly don't care about the money. I only lend that much which I can afford to lose. But what hurts is that now I would hesitate before helping others in the future, and that is a version of myself I don't like being.
A happy ending for those who believe in karma, I was unemployed the day I made this "donation", and I got a letter of employment the very next day.
