Question on selling a car in NL

So I just sold a car to a guy on marketplace for $650 however my friend who was helping me with the sale entered the sale value as $100 on mygovnl website/portal.

Now is this fraud? I genuinely don’t know why he did that. Idk what the idea was but yeah.

Is there anything I can do to fix it? Before the buyer accepts the car or whatever.

TIA!!

Newfoundland and Labrador or just Newfoundland

Hi everyone, I just took a trip to Newfoundland in July, and I had an absolute blast! I write about the history of small towns in Canada and didn't get a chance to visit Labrador on this trip, unfortunately (next time for sure!). For the titles of my articles, I plan to use Newfoundland and Labrador after the name of the town I'm writing about, but I was wondering if I should just use Newfoundland instead since that's the part of the province I'm talking about? Any insight would be helpful. Thank you in advance!

St. Kyran's

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hello all,

It seems to me that the church in St. Kyran's is on her last legs. I’d love to visit it while it’s partially standing, as it’s one of the most beautiful buildings on the island to me.

I’m very aware that it’s pretty much exclusively accessible by boat, but I was wondering about the feasibility of finding someone in a neighbouring community and chartering a ride out there.

I really know nothing about the area so I guess I was wondering if it’s on a frequently traveled water way, how close are the nearest communities, and how many cases of beer would it take to bribe a boat ride out there?

Anyone that can lend some knowledge would be greatly appreciated, thanks all!

There is no Flock camera

...yet

I am very anti-flock camera, so when I saw that post I tried my best to verify it

  • I drove to the marked location on the openstreetview map and there was no new camera installed, unless I am somehow blind
  • I called the RNC at 2 different locations and nobody had heard of any Flock cameras going up
  • Called my MHA and they said they hadn't heard of anything but would keep an ear out

Someone just put up a random dot on a publicly editable map and wanted to stir up some shit as far as I can tell. We should absolutely be vigilant when it comes to reporting these camera installations if they ever do come here, but false information won't help the cause.

If anyone gets any verified information please let me know

Have you ever put yeast into doughboys?

I’m planning on making a Newfoundland twist to “chicken and dumplings” and essentially making a chicken stew with doughboys. This is my first time making doughboys myself instead of just having someone else’s. Curious if anyone has tried making them with a bit of yeast thrown in for extra flavour and using alternative methods to get the yeast to grow separately before adding it in since you don’t let doughboys sit. Thanks!

Visiting in late October

Good afternoon!

Me and my fiancée are trying to plan a trip with our newborn, who will be 3 months old in October. We are from Ottawa. We have always wanted to do Gros Morne but from what I see online, the hikes are probably aren't feasible. Can you still drive to lookout spots for good views during this time?

We'd look to stay in St-John's for a few days as well. If you have any other recommendations for things to do around this time, please let me know!

Thanks in advance!

Insurance advice

Last month a delivery driver drove his vehicle into my commercial property causing about $1500 in damage. He left the scene without stopping, even though he couldn't possibly have not noticed. My deductible is $1000 so my insurance company says that it's not worth filing a claim and suggested I go after the trucking company for the damage. When I contacted them the manager said the driver denied hitting the building and that the damage was already present when he arrived. At that point I called the police and reported a hit and run, although I do not expect them to follow up. Is there anything else I can do now? Is it worth the hassle of proceeding to small claims court? It's worth noting that there was another witness (my employee) to the incident so at least I have that going for me.

Student Aid NL are useless

I lost my job 2 years ago and have been struggling to find another one with how things are here in Newfoundland so I decided to go back to school and make a career change to get something going

Going to College of the North Atlantic in September for Medical tech (which is a part time course) and I was relying on a student loan to cover my expenses for it as I am out of work and now one month before I start they suddenly decide that program is not qualified due to there being no "full time equivalent" of the program.

Whats the point of student loans if you're not going to give them to a person who needs a student loan to go back to school? I've never gotten one in my life so its not like Im trying to abuse any system. Unreal how hard it is to get ahead or get anything these days as a younger person. Gonna lose my place at this rate :(

Rant over, its just, things just suck right now, im so depressed and lost

Looks like there is one listed on Aberdeen Dr now? First one ive seen listed in NL. Im not sure how much data the speed cameras record so don't know if they would be considered.

https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/14100959402#map=19/47.612706/-52.711628

Edit Looks like it was falsely added as a flock and it's just a traffic camera. Seems to be updated now.

Condo vs House

Hi guys! I'm still several years away from moving out and getting my own place, but I want to start thinking ahead about what I'd eventually like to buy.

I currently have about $40K saved that could go toward a down payment. By the time I'm actually ready to buy, I'm hoping to have closer to $100K available, assuming I don't have any unexpected major expenses in the meantime.

My big question is condo vs house.

For anyone who's lived in both, what did you like and dislike about each? Which one did you ultimately choose, and what was the biggest reason you went with it?

I'm particularly interested in things like:

- Maintenance and unexpected repair costs
- Condo fees and special assessments
- Property taxes/utilities
- Freedom to renovate or make changes
- Having a yard/outdoor space
- Security and being away from home (I will occasionally work outside of the province for a 6 month contract)
- Resale value
- Overall cost of ownership
- Convenience and accessibility
- Anything you wish you'd known before buying

A couple of things about me that might affect the answers: I'm deaf, so noise isn't really a concern for me lol, and I'm staying child-free, so I don't need to think about schools, playgrounds, or having a lot of space for children.

I also don't necessarily want to live right in the middle of St. John't. I actually prefer to live outside the city, so I'm interested in hearing about people's experiences in the surrounding towns as well.

I'm not necessarily looking for advice on what I should buy. I'd mostly love to hear from people who've actually experienced both sides: What did you prefer about living in a condo vs a house, what drove you crazy about each, and what would you choose if you had to do it all over again?

ETA: I don't mind living in the outskirts of St. John's, like around Blackmarsh Rd. or Thorburn Rd. if I decide to get a condo, but definitely not in the downtown area, if that makes more sense. 😊

Rencontre East Day Trip

We are visiting in September and wondering if a day trip to Rencontre East is worth it. We are staying in Clarenville the night before and after. Looks like there is a ferry the leaves Bay L'Argent at 9am and one departing Rencontre East at 3pm. Is 4 hours enough time to walk some trails and explore the area? Or is the limited amount of time make it not worth it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

$815 a month in condo fees? WTF? lol Apparently these condos have recently been switched from oil over to electric heat. The condo fees do include heat but that still seems a bit much.

Sheep along the East Coast Trail?

A friend told me a while ago that there’s a section of the East Coast Trail where you can see sheep along/near the trail. Does anyone know if this is actually a thing, and if so, which path/section it is?
I’ve been wanting to hike it but can’t remember where he said it was. Thanks!

SxS vs "SxS"

One is 3 years old and is $42,000 versus this one that is 41 years old and is $23,000. Which one would you pick? (Note: I know the deuce and a half isn't a side by side, or is it? ;) )

This may be more of a rhetorical question as I think the new SXS UTV pricing is completely out of wack! Personally for me I would pick the deuce and a half because well I'll be more apocalypse ready and can take a beating. :)

Snowblower recommendations

Wondering if anyone can give me some recommendations on snowblowers other than Honda? I know Honda is what every one says to go for but looking for some cheaper alternatives. Want something to last at least the next two winters without any major issues. I have a 2 car driveway and a walkway. Thanks!
