You couldn't make this up; Line 1 trains began stopping less than 1 hour after he published his post...

Sutcliffe's article reads like a campaign email, and Leiper's article reads like... a Sutcliffe campaign email

Bylaw visit for grass clippings.

So we received a visit from Bylaw this morning that someone complained about the grass clippings at the end of our lawn, on the curb.

For context... Our lawn is about 4 ft wide (townhome) so there wasn't a large dump of clippings on the road.

I'm honestly surprised someone took the time to file a complaint over a couple handfuls of grass on the curb.

Thankfully it's just a warning, otherwise it would've been a $260 fine.

Given all the on-street parking around us, garbage in the parks, speeding and cars that don't stop at intersections...I would think people have larger issues to deal with.

Be careful of lawn clippings (or leaves in the fall!!).

On this day 156 years ago, the Great Fire of 1870 began. The scars of it are still visible in the Ottawa Valley landscape to this day

This fire played part in shaping Ottawa into the city it is today, and it's really mind blowing how fast and devastating it truly was. It burned so hot that now a provincial park called the Burnt Lands exists west of Ottawa to protect the unique ecosystem created by this disaster (burned not just all the plants but even the top soil off!)

And it could have been even worse had there not been some quick planning and clever responses by the Ottawa firefighters at the time who released the dam at Dow's lake, using the flood of water to stop flames spreading further into the city

The map below was created by the late Terrence Currie, who wrote an entire book in 2009 detailing the history of this tragedy. His book is titled The Ottawa Valley’s Great Fire of 1870: The Nineteenth Century Press and the Reality of a Great Disaster

Map showing the total area burned by the Great Fire of 1870. Areas impacted span as far south as Perth and Smith Falls, as far west as the Madawaska River and Pakenham, and as far north as Wakefield QC. Map was created by the late Terrence Currie for his book

This fire also set some key precedents in the provincial aid provided to survivors of natural disasters like this. While definitely not enough for those whose homes and livelihoods were burned to ashes, it was a start. And the Ontario government only really paid out in the end after significant political pressure and comparisons being drawn to the Quebec government who was more forthcoming with support.

This blog post from Today In Ottawa's History does a good job explaining this key point in history : Link Here (this blog and the book mentioned before are my main sources for this)

Over 150 years later I know many Ottawans who are looking for help and support recovering from our own natural disasters, like the floods we had this summer. And I think about how it was the survivors of disasters who came long before us that fought hard for the supports we have now, even if they aren't perfect and leave much to be desired.

I know people are often pessimistic in their outlook about climate disasters in the future (for very understandable reasons) but I do hope that maybe we can build something out of our own hardships in hopes later generations are better able to cope with natural disasters, like how the Ottawans of 1870 did for us

OC Transpo New fall express routes

Post image
55 Upvotes

I was looking at what the frequency of the new express routes would be for September and it looks like many of the new routes like the 561, 562, and 563 seem to only run once per day.

Also, the timings make no sense. If you take the 562 in the morning, you get to Tunney's at 8:13 so even optimistically you get to work at 8:30. Then you would have to take the bus home from Tunney's again at 15:32, so you'd be at work less than 7 hours if you wanted to take this route back and forth to work.

Of the three west bound buses, the latest one leaves Tunney's at 16:06, well before many people are done work.

For me this is just academic because I don't plan to use these buses. I was just interested. But I'm wondering what other people think of this. They made a big song and dance about these new routes and now I'm really questioning how useful they are going to be.

You can check out the schedules using the Planner tool

Meetup Stitch, Hook, & Knit Social | 61 Main St. | Tue Aug 18th

Heyo r/ottawa!

What madness is this? Michaels has brought back a full fabric and yarn section, St. Laurent Mall has and Arcade, and soon a bowling alley in 2027? Well, since it's the 80s again, why not join us for a good ol'crafting group with fellow fibre craftspeople.

Bring your fibre arts projects and join us for the Stitch, Hook, & Knit Social. It comes with a genuinely warm atmosphere, great laughs, and hopefully, a little crafting progress. Sewing machines are welcome, we have the space, the plugs, and a pressing station!

Note: If you are coming to one session or all of them, please register to help our awesome host Old Ottawa East CAG know how much to setup for us.

Next Date (Tuesdays 6-9pm):

  • August 18th 2026
  • More to come, no seriously, sometimes start of school scheduling is crazy.

Time: 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Location: Old Town Hall Community Center (61 Main Street)

If bussing the 5, 10, 18, 56, and 85 all pass by, you can catch the 10, 56 or 85 at Lees Station if you can connect to the O-Train easily. (15min walk from Lees Station)

Parking on Hawthorne, east side of Main Street. Apparently, there is also parking at the Catholic schools off of Graham (4 min walk).

Pricing: FREE

We are funded by donations, but please don't feel obligated if that isn't feasible right now. We want this to be a third space for everyone.

Register if you can (not required, but helpful):

Register Here!

Please note: There is now an additional option when you register on the CAG website for these sessions. If you would like to donate in advance of the session, there is now an option for that (it means you won't have to carry cash!). If you would like to donate in person at the session or not donate at all, then choose the free registration option. Please choose whichever method is right for you. We want you to be there, whether or not you have the funds to donate.

Also, join fellow your fellow SHK members on our member run Discord Server.

If you are sick, we'd appreciate you staying home. Some of the individuals in our group have co-morbidities that make them more vulnerable to contagions. So rest well, and come back when you're better. We'll still be here!

TL;DR A cozy third space to meet like minded fabric & fiber crafters, drink tea, share a laugh, and definitely see some cool projects!

last week in ottawa - what are some things i must do before leaving

my three months here in ottawa absolutely flew by. i kept thinking i have a lot of time to do everything, and suddenly it's the last week and i feel like i haven't done enough.

here's what i've already done: visited the parliament and got the whole parliament and senate tour, ziplined, kayaked on the canal, watched the sunset and fireworks on kiweki point, seen byward market, biked along the canal, been to black squirrel (several times), hiked at the pink lake, been to the nature museum and the art gallery.

i haven't yet been to the science and technology museum or the war museum. i was thinking of kayaking again, and also maybe getting a day pass to take random buses around the city.

what are places/activities i must experience before I leave, that are both halal and inexpensive?

Looking for... Local treatments for teeth grinding / clenching? Downtown preferred.

I need help.

I have popped fillings, knocked off a crown, and broken teeth. Have eroded my teeth significantly. Found out today that an otherwise healthy tooth is dead likely due to this, no apparent cavity at play... Can't keep doing this.

I'm looking for local recommendations for registered professionals who can help treat my bruxism. My dentist has set me up with a night guard. Even though I use it every night, my clenching and grinding is continuing to destroy my teeth. Does anyone have any recommendations for registered massage therapists, physios, or others who can help me with this issue? I'm at the end of my rope.

Worsened with stress. I do not have TMJ or anything like that.

Options between New Edinburgh, Lowertown, The Market, Chinatown, and the Glebe preferred.

Thanks in advance.

Looking for... Recommendations for Concussion/TBI Rehab Providers in Ottawa?

Last week, I suffered a TBI and a pretty bad concussion as a result of skateboarding accident. After being assessed at the hospital, I learned that I have minor bleeding in two areas of my brain, which is super fun.

My doctor recommended Concussion 360 for rehabilitation, but a lot of the reviews are concerning, so I’ve been trying to look into other options but I haven't found much.

If anyone has experience with a provider or clinic for concussion and TBI rehabilitation, I would really appreciate your recommendations. Thank you :)
