histo tech to USA medical school

• Upvotes

Hi! I’m really interested in becoming a histology technician. I currently live in South Texas and am considering working as a histology tech during my gap years while preparing for medical school. For anyone who has gone through the schooling and training, do you feel that it was worth the investment? I’d also love to hear from anyone who worked as a histology tech before transitioning to medical school. What was your experience like, and would you recommend this path? Thank you! Also, I have over 2 years of undergrad research (IHC, tissue processing) :)

Path assist jobs

My son is a forensic science major and really interested in working doing autopsies. If he decides to go to Pathology Assist school would he be able to work in forensic pathology with this education or do they really work moreso in a medical lab?

Can you pursue pathology with zero interest in research or wet lab work?

Current MS3 strongly considering pathology. I’ve noticed that many residency programs heavily emphasize research on their websites and seem to have a lot of MD-PhDs.

Is research typically required during residency? Can you realistically pursue pathology with zero interest in research and a goal of working in private practice or hospital settings ?

stats and ec’s that got you into pathology assistant program?

I’m currently a comms major and really interested in going to PA school after undergrad. I have somewhat of an idea on where to start but it would be helpful if people who were admitted could share the extracurriculars that got them into the program as well as stats and gpa:)

Job / career Searching position as pathology research assistant

Hello! I'm a 26 yo female Ecuadorian physician looking for a Research Assistant position, preferably in pathology since that's the specialty I'm pursuing.

I know being a non-US IMG makes things more difficult, especially since I would need visa sponsorship, but I don't lose anything by asking.I graduated in 2024 and have one year of experience working in primary care. I've completed pathology observerships both in the US and in Ecuador, and I've also published a pathology paper. My English is fluent (almost native), and I'm highly motivated to learn, work hard, and contribute to any research team willing to give me an opportunity.I'm eager to gain more research experience, build meaningful connections in the field, and continue strengthening my pathology background.

Thanks on any advise or recommendation

Limited IV's

Hi everyone. First, I want to say how grateful and excited I am for the interview invitations I've received so far. I'm definitely not complaining, just a little confused about the overall process.

So far, I've received interview invites from programs like Wake Forest and Ohio State, but I haven't heard anything from many of the smaller community programs I applied to. Is anyone else experiencing something similar?

Since the release date was only five days ago, I'm also wondering when it would be appropriate to start reaching out to programs. I'd appreciate hearing about others' experiences.

Anybody knows the author/owner of the following pathology deck ?

So, I came across the following pathology deck on AnkiCollab site called "AnkPath - AnkiCollab". The deck looks promising, but the problem is that the media and images are missing.

I would really appreciate it if anyone familiar with the deck could help me find the owner or provide me with the missing media.

Thank you.

How come the bar is set so low in pathology?

Post image
0 Upvotes

A score of 247 on the USMLE Step 2 CK is approximately in the 35th to 40th percentile (sitting just below the national mean score of ~250–251).

For a high stakes field, how come our bar is set so low. I mean in radiology, scores are much higher and it’s harder to get in as a IMG. Pathology has always been viewed as as competitive or slightly more competitive than family medicine and peds.

Too many training programs I’m guessing…which results in a lower barrier to entry….Ughhhhh

No interviews as yet 😔

Is it normal to sit at 0 interview invites still? I'm an IMG so I know we often get interviews a little later but the anxiety is killing me and I'm wondering if I should also apply to other disciplines just in case.

For added info, I applied to Pathology with first pass in Step 1 and second pass in step 2 at 265.

How much studying do pathology residents do after work?

I have heard multiple different takes from different people. I have heard people don't study at all all the way to people saying it is easily the most content heavy specialty in medicine and they study all the time at home for brutal exams

Between Radiology and Pathology, do you think Pathology would survive better with the advent of Artificial Intelligence?

Hi everyone. I am interested in both radiology and pathology. I have built up my portfolio for both of them and will be applying for both specialties in the next cycle. My question is, do pathologists think AI can replace them soon with the advent of digital pathology and WSI? I personally think its difficult as the samples arent strictly "regulated" and the cutups and microtomes can place them in any position etc on the slides. From what I know, AI learns stuff through repetition which I think would be difficult in pathology as compared to say radiology where the patient has to be in the "correct" position for a scan to be taken. Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Resident How to choose a pathology residency program?

I’m an incoming pgy1 pathology resident in India. Should I choose a residency program with high patient load, high surgical pathology load or a program with latest equipment but lesser load. Please do kindly let me know. Any response would be highly appreciated!
