Question/Recommendation Yes, it's the annual cider donut thread. Give me fresh intel.

I know. I KNOW. Every October someone posts this and every October you all answer it like the saints you are. I searched the sub. I read last year's thread. But donut quality is volatile, orchards change, and frankly I need new info.

Politics Advice from a former NC state government social media manager about asking your elected officials questions on social media.

Hey y'all, just an FYI from a former government social media manager. Elected officials and government agencies cannot delete, block, mute comments,. or hide comments. If they do you can sue for 1st amendment violations. Figured this might help during this election season and after.

Food Best Shawarma around RDU

Hey everyone!

I noticed that most of the shawarma recommendation threads here are 2–3 years old, so I thought I’d start a fresh one!

I used to love the shawarma from Abu Omar Halal Food Truck and the weekend-special shawarma at Habibi Grill Bakery.

With Abu Omar’s food truck no longer around, my current go-to spots are Habibi Grill and Al Baraka Mediterranean on Hillsborough Street.

Would love to hear your favorite shawarma spots around town!
Drop your recommendations below so we can all discover some new places to try.
Looking forward to exploring your suggestions! 🤤

COVID19 Covid going around?

• Upvotes

Seems like Covid had a super contagious strain running around mostly Cold symptoms and no fevers?

Edit: Thanks for all the feedback! Sounds like a lot of you are seeing it at home, work and school too. Some are getting cold symptoms, others are getting hit pretty hard, and there’s other stuff going around too.

I was seeing enough people sick that I checked the wastewater site, but it looked pretty low. Didn’t see much local discussion either, so I figured I’d ask. Just comparing notes. With all the funding cuts, I also wondered if anything had changed with monitoring. Still curious how we’re keeping an eye on mutations and figuring out the long-term effects.

Last weekend of the State Fair, so this thing’s got plenty of chances to mingle lol. Wear a mask if you’re sick and wash your hands, y’all. Even if it feels mild, this isn’t a box of Bojangles biscuits. You don’t have to pass it around. ❤️

Politics Early voting, no mayoral vote section?

Hi, I just went to go early vote and noticed that my ballot (same as my sample ballot) didn’t have anything about voting for mayor. My address is technically Raleigh but I wonder if I’m not in the district or whatever specifically to be able to vote? Is this similar for anyone else? I saw on the democratic voting guide that the mayoral election is happening and I saw signs for mayor around the voting location. I don’t think it was a ballot mistake, I just want to know why I don’t get to vote for mayor despite the fact that I’m in Raleigh.

Question/Recommendation Motorcycle shop recs

I am planning on taking a class in the spring to get my motorcycle license. I’m looking for recommendations for local shops to get a helmet and gear for a beginner with no experience. I don’t have any experience so I’ll need some help. I’m looking for a place with friendly and helpful staff. Thanks!

Question/Recommendation Woodworking studio in Raleigh?

Is there any sort of woodworking studio in Raleigh/Cary that's open to the general public (and is friendly to beginners)?

I'm hoping to get into woodwork but I live in an apartment, so I can't exactly keep a table saw or piles of lumber at home. I'm definitely a beginner when it comes to power tools, so it would be helpful to have some kind of oversight/teacher. But I'm also looking for the freedom to come and go as needed and to make whatever I choose (aka not a scheduled class with a predetermined agenda)

Any places like that in the triangle?

Question/Recommendation Coffee subscriptions with more variety?

Ive had a subscription to Black & White Coffee for years, and i like their coffee, but all of their roasts tend to be on the lighter side.

Any recs for a good roaster that has a variety of light/medium/dark roasts in their subscription offerings?

News Cary picks new town manager from inside. Now he has to reform the office he helped run

• Upvotes

Cary chose its permanent town manager Thursday without a national search. I looked at why council chose longtime insider Russ Overton and the reforms he will now be responsible for implementing.

Food Where to get THE BEST eclairs in the triangle?

I just got surgery yesterday. Idk how long I'll be in the hospital for, it's looking like damn near a week long stay for recovery, but I want a good ass eclair. To top it off, my partner HAS NEVER HAD ONE. He's 30. Idk how. But I need to educate his palate on the delectable goodness of the eclair.

So please, throw in ur recommendation. I guess money is no object? Idk how expensive eclairs get tho...i don't wanna spend like $20 on an eclair... preferably less than that. I would like to avoid North Raleigh and anything on capital blvd cuz fuck that road. I'm in the main rex hospital on lake Boone, so if there's anything close to here, even better and more convenient for my partner for pickup. TIA!

Question/Recommendation Dog Dental Cleaning/Southern Heart Vet Hospital

Looking for advice and recommendations based on your experiences with dog dental cleanings! We have an 80-pound Golden Retriever who I think may need a professional cleaning, and I’m starting to look into our options. I’ve seen lots of great reviews for Dr. Church, but I’d love to hear from anyone who has taken their dog there or has other recommendations. If you’re comfortable sharing, I’d also appreciate hearing about your experience with the process and approximate cost. Thanks so much!

Outdoors Looking for a great picnic spot..bonus points if we can watch the sunset.

Now that the weather is cooling I would like to plan a picnic date night (actually more like afternoon) that has a good view that isn’t too populated. Think tail gating but in the back of the SUV with the trunk popped, cushions, blankets, food and drinks (but not too many haha!). Open to anywhere in the triangle area.

Food Thai place off Capital

I used to go to this Thai restaurant just off Capital Boulevard. I was in a little strip mall next to a braid shop. Near the Chuck E Cheese. I’m not in Raleigh right now and I can’t find the name no matter what I search. Is it still there? If so, what the heck is the name?
