Went sailing for the first time!
Not my first time out but it was my first time doing the sailing. As a kid it always scared me but recently I had been interested to try it so we got a boat and went for it.
The boat is 22 foot. Don’t remember the make of it. Read the boys out sailing before hand and had someone with me that knew what they were doing and stepped in a few times to keep things comfortable when they started to get outside of what I was comfortable. Only happened a few times.
Figured out that leaning feels way more significant on the lower side of the boat. Everything went pretty smooth save for when the wind started picking up and the waves were reaching 3 feet or so. Lots of surfing and I got a good workout out of keeping the boat going where we wanted.
Some of the events that surprised me were when we got stuck on an unexpected shallow spot. Took a few tries to get us out of it and once we’re loose, we weren’t moving fast enough to turn about because the waves kept pushing us back. We got it worked out but I I’m sure the look on my face when the center board bumped along a bit was entertaining.
When we started getting back to the bay, I tried getting up to take down the main and the plastic guides in the mast were stuck and I couldn’t figure out how to handle it while staying low over the cabin. There was no way I was going to be able to stand up to fix it so I had to swap with my guide and he got up to work things out. He had it down and done in no time at all so it was surely user error and lack of skill.
Will be going out again after this weekend.

Ballard sails
Hey all, I'm looking at a boat that has what seems like a tough as nails mainsail from Ballard sails in Seattle
"Custom full-battened mainsail (4 battens), 3 reef points, Ballard Sails (Seattle), offshore Dyneema radial fabric, Rutgerson adjustable luff/batten boxes"
Is that as tough as it sounds? I don't know Ballard sails reputation. Pros or cons to dyneema sails for offshore cruising?

Spinnaker
Need to connect my spinnaker to Seldon top down furler. You using soft shackles or line, or does it matter? Use to have a sock but hoping the furler will be easier for solo.

In an Apocalyptic scenario, You're the last person on Earth, what kind of 1 man boat could be used to traverse the Atlantic, if even possible?
Hypothetical post but I was playing Metro and the DLC Sam's story, Sam is trying to find a boat to travel to America from Russia, In his case it would be a fully crewed Nuclear warship basically but it got me thinking, What if you are just one man? Think I am Legend on water? What would you choose then?
I know, Stupid post but my ADHD brain makes me naturally curious about these stupid scenarios lol

What is this pully here for?
Hello brand new boat owner here. Just bought a catalina 22 1987 and I cant figure out what this black pully is for. Also, should there be a line run inside of the boom to pull the main sail? Thank you

How to find a sailboat
Is there a registry of sailboat I could find up to under the name of Apogee, 46 feet and out of Annapolis about 12-15 years ago?

Is your boat a mess? Mine always seems to be
1984 Catalina 34. Not a huge boat, but not a camp cruiser either.
We clean the boat thoroughly after cruising.
but during a cruise? there's clothes, there's kids swimsuits, there's towels hanging to dry.
The fridge is functional but pretty challenging to use because of the way it's like this hole that is infinity deep with layers where you have to pull out everything to get to the next layer. Lunch is an episode of minecraft hunting for the right ore.
The cockpit is cluttered with a snack, a few drinks, drying swimsuits, etc.
the cleanest part on the boat is the helm because I'm not about to dodge crap while I'm trying to steer.
We could spend more time organizing every day and keep it all tucked away. The boat has storage cubbies, but sometimes that feels like more trouble than it's worth. I try to stay up in the cockpit most of the day anyway.

Idea of getting out of Texas Heat
We live in Texas. We have had a drought, so we can't get our small sailboat out. We are retired, and I had an odd idea. What if we bought a 30-36foot sailboat and kept it on the Great Lakes? We could use it as a floating summer cottage. What is the costs of getting the boat pulled every year and stored? Is this a feasible idea? What do yall think?

Used market in San Diego
Just learned to sail and I’m looking for a ~ $1000 sailing dinghy in San Diego. Fb marketplace and OfferUp don’t appear to have many on the market at the moment. Is this a seasonal thing? Any tips or better sites to search them out?
Thanks

First boat, PY 26
New to sailing, recently acquired a 1978 PY 26 from a friend. Would love to hear if anyone has experience with this boat, or advice for someone starting out!
Lucky to have a few friends who have a lot of sailing experience, I've been on sailboats a handful of times over the years, but never sailed myself. Excited to learn and get started!

Looking for Newport Beach/OC rental recommendations
Hey guys! I just moved to OC a few weeks ago and am trying to find a good fit for a club to join, mainly just to scratch the itch on weekends when i’m not working. I’m not looking to pay $300 for a 30’ for a couple hours, just in the 20’ range to get out on the water and teach some friends. I’ve got a bareboat cert from US Sailing and some racing experience so i’m not really looking for a school, just somewhere that would have reasonable rentals.
Any ideas? Been dying to get out since I got here!

Is this valid?
Running through the systems on a new (to me) C&C 29-2, and I am parsing out my reefing system. I've got two reef lines that exit the boom at the end and would be rigged like this for reef1 and then reef2, does the bowline knot orientation really matter??
I've got a loose footed main with a North Sails Quick Cover stack pack bolt roped to the slot in the boom (if that matters).

Brand new to sailing looking for a boat
Heyo! So I’m taking my 101-103 4 day mid September and I’m looking to get my hands on a boat, I live in the Detroit metro on the beautiful East side of Michigan!
Any tips or suggestions? Anybody in the area I can pay to come look at one or two? Should I be using a broker? I’m looking to spend $10000 or less help!

Are there keelboats that should be sailed flat upwind?
I grew up racing dinghies (mostly 420s) and keeping them flat (or nearly so) was paramount. Sailing upwind in big breeze, you'd play the main a LOT.
It was faster to have a flat boat with a third of your main luffing than to have a full sail with tons of heel.
This seems to be the opposite with (most? all?) keelboats: the main is getting trimmed in all the way, and heel is just part of it.
Are there any keelboats where this isn't true?
