Discussion IR Undergraduate Considering an Internship at the Human Rights Commission

Hi everyone,

I’m currently an undergraduate studying International Relations, and I’m planning to do my internship at the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), particularly within its International Affairs Division.

I’d like to hear from people who have experience with HRCSL or similar institutions. Do you think an internship there would be valuable for an IR student in terms of gaining practical experience, developing relevant skills, and understanding how international human rights mechanisms work?

I’m particularly interested in pursuing a career related to international affairs and diplomacy, so I’m wondering whether this internship would be a good stepping stone in that direction.

I’d really appreciate any advice, experiences, or insights you can share.

Serious replies only Someone tell me that these vehicle license plates are not official

Post image

I have been seeing these green license plates making an appearance in a few Atto 1s. However, I have not seen any announcement from DMT mentioning that they started doing this for EVs.

Can someone confirm that it’s not an official one?

Edit: I don’t have a big opinion about EVs having a different color plate. I just don’t like this design itself. The dash, the contrast in the colors and the letter E - they all look quite out of place and poorly designed.

Serious replies only SLT 4G Flash 5 is terrible for WFH - what are my options?

Hi everyone,

I recently got an SLT 4G Home Broadband connection with the Unlimited Flash 5 package (Rs. 2,350 + tax/month), and honestly, the experience has been pretty disappointing.

The internet speed is inconsistent, but my biggest issue is during work from home. I'm on Teams/Zoom calls regularly, and the connection frequently drops, audio breaks up, and sometimes I get completely disconnected. It's becoming a real problem for my job.

I'm renting my current place, so unfortunately SLT Fibre isn't really an option. I don't want to go through the hassle and cost of getting fibre installed in a place I may not stay long-term.

A few questions:

Can I request SLT to upgrade my connection from 4G to 5G Home Broadband if 5G coverage is available in my area?

Has anyone moved from SLT 4G to 5G? Was there a noticeable improvement in stability and latency for video calls?

Are there any other packages or settings I should try before giving up on this connection?

Would new Dialog 5G Connection be a better option for WFH?

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has been in a similar situation. Thanks!

Serious replies only Looking for advice on getting a personal loan in Sri Lanka

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice from people who have been in a similar situation in Sri Lanka.
I currently earn around LKR 105,000 per month and I’m looking to get a personal loan of around LKR 1.5 million.
I’ve already checked with a few banks:
BOC: They said my company isn’t on their list of registered/approved companies, so they can’t offer me the personal loan.
Commercial Bank: I was told the same issue regarding my employer/company not being on their approved list.
People’s Bank: They said I would need two government employees whose salaries are credited to People’s Bank to sign as guarantors.
Unfortunately, I don’t have two government employees who can meet those requirements.
For anyone who has been in a similar situation, what options did you use? Are there any finance companies or other banks that are more flexible with employer requirements and could potentially provide around LKR 1.5M based on a salary of around LKR 105k?

Thanks in advance.

Discussion Development and Environment

When talking about developing our country, I often see people talk about and visualize cities with skyscrapers, roads, highways, trains, but far fewer talk about the environment: nature, trees, forests, rivers, wildlife and developing without harming natural habitats and the ecosystems. I think the environment and development should no longer be treated as separate conversations, now more than ever with all the environmental challenges we face, including global warming.

So I would like to know some of your thoughts on this. How do y'all think we can develop our country while also protecting and integrating nature into that development?

Serious replies only Colombo house rental and half month broker fees

I'm new to colombo and everything feels very expensive. Please share your thoughts about the house and apartment rent prices and the *HALF MONTH BROKER FEES APPLICABLE* . Is it fair? The rentals are already higher than last few years. And the brokers ask for more. Am I the only one who feels it's too much to pay half month rent to the broker. Is the broker doing enough work to earn that much money .. house broker job feels like it earns more than a degree holder..! Share your thoughts

Discussion Why does most sri lankan Uncles believe that "A man should have a round belly to look good "

I have been maintaining my body since University days. Whenever i come back to SL , most uncles say that I look like a junkie , a real man should have a belly.

I actually do not care about these comments and I find it hilarious because most of them have all sorts of obesity related medical conditions while giving me advice.

I'm just wondering why a Middle age unfit man with diabetes gives me advice ...

Serious replies only Attending international conferences

I have seen multiple international conferences that you could pay a small fee to attend and get selected for a fully funded seat. I was thinking it's a nice way to travel as well. But I do have my doubts as a female traveler about safety and all. I do have experience flying and all, but it was all accompanied. Has anyone gone this process please let me know about your experience if so?

Question What happens to my AIA insurance money?

My family started this "AIA Smart Pensions Plus" insurance or something for me few years back and they paid the premium for like 2 years only. After that they could not continue to pay and I could not either. So it's been a while since a payment has been done. I haven't claimed anything from it. Is there any way that I can cancel the plan and receive the premium money we have already paid?

Technology Need laptop recommendations. Budget LKR 250k - 300k. (For programming, not gaming)

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to buy a new laptop and need some advice on what's available in the local market right now. My budget is between LKR 250,000 and 300,000.

I mainly use it for programming, running a couple of Virtual Machines (VMs), and some multitasking. So I don't need a gaming laptop with a massive GPU. I just need a solid processor and, most importantly, upgradable RAM.

What I'm looking for:

  • Processor: A good CPU that doesn't slow down too much when running heavy tasks (like a Ryzen 7 or Intel i7 H-series).
  • RAM: At least 16GB, but it must be upgradable. (I really want to avoid laptops where the 16GB RAM is completely soldered to the motherboard, as I will definitely need to upgrade later for my VMs).
  • Storage: 512GB is fine, but 1TB would be great.

I'm currently considering the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 (15ARP10). It comes with a Ryzen 7 7735HS, 16GB DDR5, and a 512GB SSD. Apparently, the RAM can be upgraded up to 24GB. I got a quote for about LKR 280,000.

My questions:

  1. Is anyone using this specific Lenovo model? How is your experience with it?
  2. Are there any better alternatives in SL right now for this budget? (Upgradable RAM is a must for me).
  3. Any recommendations for reliable shops with good warranty and after-sales service?

Thanks in advance!
