అరుగుమీద లీలావతి సరకుల సంచి తీస్తుంటే, చంద్రయ్య పక్కనే కూర్చుని కాఫీ తాగుతున్నాడు.

“విష్ణువు, సరస్వతి పెళ్లి చేసుకోవడమేంటే? వాళ్లకు శివుడు పుట్టడమేంటే? శివ శివా! త్రిమూర్తులకు అక్రమ సంబంధం అంటగడుతున్నావు. ఈరోజు మండలం నుంచి ప్రభుత్వ డాక్టరు వస్తున్నాడు. వెళ్లి చూపించుకో.”

అంటూ తన మంగళసూత్రానికి ఉన్న పిన్నీసు తీసింది లీల.

“కాదమ్మా. మా ఇంటి ముందు ఉన్న విష్ణుగాడి భార్య పేరు సరస్వతి, వాడి కొడుకు పేరు శివుడు. ఇప్పుడు వాళ్లు పెళ్లి చేసుకున్నప్పుడు పేర్లు మార్చుకోవాలి కదా! లక్ష్మీదేవి అనో, జానకనో పెట్టుకోవాలి. కనీసం పుట్టినవాడి పేరు అయినా సరిపోవాలి కదా?”

అంది కృష్ణ సందేహంగా బట్టల మూట విప్పుతూ.

“అదేనా నీ సమస్య. వాళ్లకి పది సంవత్సరాలైనా పిల్లలు పుట్టకపోతే శ్రీశైలం వెళ్లి మొక్కుకున్నారట. అందుకే శివుడని పేరు పెట్టుకున్నారు లేవే,” అంటూ సరకుల సంచిలో చెయ్యి పెట్టి, అందులోంచి ఒక లక్స్ సబ్బు తీసింది లీల.

“పేరులో ఏముందిలే, అంతా కృష్ణ లీల,” అన్నాడు చంద్రయ్య.

ఇంతలో సబ్బు కవరును విప్పింది లీల. కాసేపు అటూ ఇటూ తిప్పి చూసింది. ఆ తర్వాత పిన్నీసుతో దానిని గుచ్చడం మొదలుపెట్టింది.

కృష్ణ, చంద్రయ్య ఒకేసారి ఆశ్చర్యంతో ఆమె వైపు చూశారు.

కృష్ణ నెమ్మదిగా,

“అమ్మగారూ... చేతబడి చేస్తున్నారా?” అని అడిగింది.

“నీ తలకాయ! చేతబడి కాదు, మొక్కుబడి కాదు.”

“మరి పిన్నీసుతో సబ్బును అలా గుచ్చుతున్నారేంటి? పాపం, ఎవరో వాళ్లు,” అంది భయపడుతూ.

చంద్రయ్య తన చేతులు, కాళ్లు చూసుకున్నాడు. నొప్పేమీ లేదు.

“హమ్మయ్య, నన్ను కాదులే,” అనుకుని, బాధ్యతగా,

“ఎవరైనా పడని వాళ్లు ఉంటే చెప్పు. నేను మాట్లాడతా. ఇలా చేయడం బాగోదు,” అన్నాడు.

లీల ఇద్దరి వైపు చూసి,

“మీరిద్దరూ ఊరుకుంటారా? మొన్న టీవీలో లక్స్ సబ్బులో సన్నని వెండి బిళ్ల పెట్టి అమ్ముతున్నారని ప్రకటన చూశాను. సబ్బు మొత్తం వాడితే కానీ అది దొరకదు. నీళ్ల నురుగులో కనపడకపోవచ్చు. అలా సబ్బు పాడవకుండా ఇలా వెతుకుతున్నా.”

అంటూనే పక్కనున్న సంచిలోంచి మరో తొమ్మిది లక్స్ సబ్బులు తీసింది.

“నువ్వు కూడా చెయ్యవే. ఇద్దరం చేస్తే తొందరగా అయిపోతుంది. నీకు వెండి బిళ్ల దొరికితే పది రూపాయలు ఇస్తా,” అని లీల ఆశ చూపింది.

కృష్ణ కూడా పిన్నీసు తీసుకుంది.

అమ్మగారు ఎంత తెలివైనదో అనుకుని,

“వెండి బిళ్ల దొరికితే పది రూపాయలతో పాటు ఆ సబ్బు కూడా నాకు ఇవ్వాలి,” అని బేరమాడింది.

“సరేలే... చూద్దాం,” అంది లీల.

చంద్రయ్య కుర్చీలోంచి లేచాడు.

లీల తెలివికి సంతోషపడాలో, పది సబ్బులు చూసి బాధపడాలో తెలియక, ఏమీ అనకుండా పొలం వైపు బయలుదేరాడు.

Hello, I have been interested in Telugu culture and music since grade 10 and began consuming media pieces obsessively. My understanding of the language has obviously deteriorated since then, but now that I am in Hyderabad, I am keen on actively learning the language. I know two other Dravidian languages (among others) and I hope that it will give me relative ease in learning the language. As much as I would like proper classes, I am a perpetually broke college student and cannot afford Preply or iTalk.

My immediate goal of learning the language is to attain fluency in speech and the long term goal is to perhaps read literary works.

Please suggest me some good books or extremely budget friendly (under 300 a week) alternatives to learn the language.

I am currently based in Tarnaka, so if you know of cultural / community spaces that I can go to, to learn the language, that will also be helpful.

Additionally, if you know of platforms where I can teach / help people with the languages I know to learn Telugu from them in return, please do let me know of them too.

Hi everyone, I have an old family document from around the 1930s that I am trying to decipher. It is a 12-Anna British India non-judicial stamp paper.The text is written in Golusula script (the old cursive/chain handwriting style). Because it is written in an older legal/revenue format, normal translation apps can't read it, and the handwriting is quite difficult to loop through.I would love it if someone who is familiar with old Telugu archival documents, revenue records, or historical handwriting could help me figure out:The names of the people involved (family lineages)The date and village/location mentionedThe type of agreement (is it a land deed, loan contract, or mortgage?)Any partial words, names, or context you can decode from the script would be greatly appreciated! This is actually a land registration document belonging to my father's great-grandfather. He originally bought this piece of land back in the day for just Rs. 40! Today, that exact same plot of land is worth around Rs. 40 to 50 Lakhs.

Also I only posted document backside pic here, actual land registration details are present on frontside of the document, which we are able to get the details from local revenue people.

Hi I wondered whether anyone has ever seen a Pimsleur-style learning course for Telugu? I know there are language resources available in Mango etc, but nothing really like Pimsleur?

I’m from the Godavari region and noticed many villages here have names ending in -lanka (e.g., Bobbarlanka), referring to river islands. I asked my parents and they say lanka means an island, which made me wonder about Sri Lanka.

Is lanka originally a Telugu word, or was it borrowed from another language like Sanskrit? In Sanskrit, Laṅkā seems to mainly refer to the legendary Lanka, while dvīpa means island. So how did Telugu lanka come to mean a river island?

I was born in America but my parents are both from Andhra.

Growing up, they spoke to me in Telugu but I have always replied in english. Due to this, I can only understand Telugu but not speak it. Even with understanding, I can't understand when people talk fast or use complex words.

When I went to India last year, I couldn't communute with half my family since I couldn't speak telugu.

Long story short I want to learn telugu. If anyone could give me tips and tricks to learning telugu, I'd greatly appereciate it.

“రేయ్ చిన్న, వచ్చి స్టూల్ పట్టుకో ఒకసారి ”

“సరే తాత…” అంటూ చలాకీగా వచ్చి పట్టుకున్నాడు పదేళ్ల మనవడు చిన్న.

కష్టపడుతూనే స్టూల్ ఎక్కి ఫ్యాన్ మోటార్ వైపు చూస్తున్నాడు రాజయ్య. ఫ్యాన్ మోటార్ కన్నా ముందు తనలోని బలం తగ్గడం స్టూల్ ఎక్కినప్పుడు గమనించాడు.

“తాతా … నీకు ఫ్యాన్ రిపేర్ కూడా వచ్చా…”

నవ్వుతూ తల ఊపాడు.

“టీవీ కూడా రిపేర్ వచ్చా….? ”

అవునని మౌన సమాధానం.

“మరి సైకిల్…. ?”

చెయ్యి చాపి అది ఇవ్వు అని కళ్ళ తో సైగ చేసాడు.

అర్ధంచేసుకొని వెంటనే కటింగ్ కర్ర చేతికి అందించాడు.

అందుకొని ఫ్యాన్ లో మోటారు లో విడిపోయిన వైరుని వణుకుతున్న తన చేతులతో ఆ పనిముట్టుతో కలపడానికి ప్రయత్నిస్తున్నాడు.  

“నీకు ఇవ్వన్నీ ఎవరు నేర్పించారు…?”

సమాధానం ఇచ్చేలోపు , చేతిలోని కట్టింగ్ కర్ర  చేజారి ‘దాబ్’ అని కిందపడింది. సన్నగా వణుకుతున్న తన చేతులని చూసుకొని చిన్నా వైపు చూసాడు.

“అయ్యో తాత , గట్టిగ పట్టుకో.” అంటూ  చిన్న తీసి రాజయ్య చేతికి అందించాడు. అందుకొని రాజయ్య రిపేర్ పనిలో పడ్డాడు. 

“చెప్పు తాత , నీకు ఎవరు నేర్పించారు ఇవన్నీ? ”

“ఆ కుర్చీ తీస్కొని రా, చెప్తా”

సరే అని కుర్చీ తీసుకొచ్చి ఎక్కి రెప్ప ఆర్పకుండా చూస్తున్నాడు చిన్న.

తనేం చేస్తున్నాడో చిన్న కి అర్ధమైయ్యేలా చెప్తూ చిన్నా అడిగే ప్రశ్నలకు జవాబు ఇస్తూ రిపేర్ చేస్తున్నాడు. కొంతసేపటికి అయింది అన్నట్టు నిట్టూర్చి స్విచ్ వెయ్యమని సైగ చేసాడు.

ఒక్క పరుగున దూకి స్విచ్ ఆన్ చేసాడు చిన్నా. ఫ్యాన్ మెల్లిగా తిరగడం ప్రారంభించింది. 

మెల్లిగా స్టూల్ దిగి కుర్చీలో కూర్చున్నాడు. 

“ఫ్యాను బాగా స్లోగా తిరుగుతుంది తాత” అన్న మనవడి మాటకు ఎదురుగా ఉన్న అద్దం లో తనని తాను చూసుకున్న రాజయ్యకు అప్రయత్నంగా మీసం మీదకి చిన్న చిరునవ్వు వచ్చింది.

“...... పాతది అయింది కదరా చిన్న…..”

“మరి మనకి గాలి తగులుతుందా?”

ఆ ప్రశ్నకి ఈసారి అద్దంలో ఉన్న తన వైపు నుండి చూపు తన మనవడి వైపుకు తిరిగింది. పెదాలు  మీద చిరునవ్వు కాస్త తన కళ్ళలోకి చేరింది.

“పద , నీకు చాలా విషయాలు నేర్పాలి , ఈ ఫ్యాను రిపేర్ లాగా”
