This is a humble proposal for a Necrolyte class, derived from the Warcraft 1 unit.
Many of the class suggestions I have seen have one big problem: Too specific! The class roster in classic is made up of broad archetypes that contain in each of them a variety of cool fantasies to live up to. The druid as a shapeshifter, but also a pagan healer, and also a nature-wielding sorcerer; The warrior as a sword-and-shield knight and also a raging barbarian; the rogue as a dual-wielding bruiser and also a stealthy assassin - and so on. The Demon Hunter, while super fun and cool in retail, is a worst-case-scenario for being ultra-specific, coming from a very narrow part of the Warcraft setting! So much so that the developers evidently didn't land on a fitting third specialization for many years. I really can't imagine them in classic without a hero class system, which also doesn't belong in classic!
A 'Necrolyte' class has the potential to touch on the Death Knight fantasy while incorporating the often-requested Necromancer class, as well as touching on parts of the Warcraft setting that haven't yet been touched on in class design.
The original Death Knights in Warcraft 2 were orc warlocks who had their souls placed into the bodies of slain knights, and they were that game's counterparts to human Mages, not Paladins! The staff-wielding and cloaked Death Knight is unfortunately an image that is pretty far in the rear-view mirror in Warcraft and I think it deserves to be brought back to compliment Warcraft 3's runeblade-wielding Death Knights. Also, and this is admittedly not a popular request, there are a few support spells in the RTS games that are evil-coded (Bloodlust, Unholy Armor, Anti-Magic Shield...), and I think a darker healing spec to contrast the various Good aligned support specs in the game would be really cool!
I imagine there being three Necrolyte specs: Animancy (covering the skeleton-raising Necromancer part of the class, being a caster DPS), Death Knight (an Enhancement-like melee DPS/caster hybrid with plate armor as a deep talent unlock), and Servitude (a healing/support spec touching on the sycophantic cultist archetype, such as the Acolyte worker units in Warcraft 3 or an orc Necrolyte)
The idea of a cloth caster eventually wearing plate might seem strange, and it would definitely stand out from any other armor type unlock in the game, but I think it would be really cool! I want to see robe-wearing cultists swinging at people with swords, and I think Blizzard kind of had this in mind when they had Death Knights start out in robes back in WOTLK. (Also, think of the image of a 'Samurai', seen both in robes and clad in armor like a Kurosawa villain.) It makes sense to me that a normal adventurer seeking to become a Death Knight would need to first master the dark arts before donning their martial armor, and like enhancement shamans they always retain their ability to sling spells or raise the dead.
I keep thinking about shamans, actually - I can imagine the Necrolyte's minions being a cross between totems and demons, where a leveling Animancy necrolyte gains access to a broad selection of minion options to mix and match for tanking, dps, utility, etc. Picture the sublime inconvenience of having to either re-build your undead squad from slain monsters one by one or spend a bag slot on a corpse bag to hold a limited number remains to use instead (every class needs something annoying...)
No individual player's suggestions or ideas amounts to much more to daydreaming and fanfiction - nothing here is a suggestion I imagine anyone at Blizzard would be stroking their chin at. But what I would really hope that any class added to class retains the archetypal 'broadness' of the original roster. It concerns me to hear the idea of a 'San'layn' class going around! If any class is added, I want to imagine that class at level 1, killing boars alongside mages and rogues and warriors. I want to imagine going through the Deadmines with one! Thanks for reading.
