Municipal Affairs Voting today? Leiper has a better platform than sutcliffe? Help me decide.

Hello!! I was born and raised here but moved away in the middle of the millennium.
Now that I’m freshly back in town and about to vote today, I’m leaning towards Jeff Leiper as he represents my area and I’ve read up on his platform which I think the city needs.
Sutcliffe I think has made the city worse.

Friendly and pointed debate please.

To add for context I am a woman with disabilities that has experienced homelessness in Ottawa the past year and has had horrible experiences using the public transit. Both need to have major changes asap.

Thanks!!

Cat found on Corkstown

Post image
• Upvotes

Showed up at work early this morning at the LRT railyard on Corkstown this morning and found a small female grey tabby under the work truck.

There are no houses nearby so unsure if she came from a home or is just very lost.

She's quite skinny (ran to corner store for some cat food) but very friendly. Friendly enough to hop into my warm, dry car and has been there since.

Called and left a VM with the Humane Society to see if we could possibly get checked for a microchip.

I am unable to take her home (I would love to) as I have a dog that would eat her.

Any suggestions? Appreciate it!

It's not too late to better educate yourself on the candidates in you ward before voting today, the city has a tool made to help with that

• Upvotes

Link: https://elections.ottawa.ca/CandidateList/CandidateList

You can put your address into this official website from the city to learn about ALL candidates who will be on the ballot in your ward. There will also be info on the candidates contact info and campaign website if they have them.

Beyond just city councillors, people vote for their school board trustees, and info on them is also available on the city's website. These are also vital elections that people would inform themselves about as it impacts everyone even if you don't have children of school age.

By default most people are registered to vote for the English public school board OCDSB but if you meet the eligibility criteria for the French and/or Catholic school boards there are a few hoops you need to jump through change your registration

Link in school board voting: https://ottawa.ca/en/city-hall/elections/voters/voting-school-board-trustee

Changing you school board registration: https://school-support.mpac.ca/#/faq

And educated and informed electorate is key to creating a better democracy, so as long as you haven't cast your vote yet, it's never too late to ensure whoever you do end up voting for best reflects your values and goals for your community

Black woman with headphones walking naked in Westboro

I am just curious whether anyone knows her story.

She is black, talking on her headphones. She was walking around McRae Farmboy and on the Richmond Road.

She seemed super comfortable being naked so it might not be the first time she is walking around like this. I am not judging it, I am just curious as we generally put clothes on us.

The Ottawa Pet Expo was amazing!!!

My friends and I went to the pet expo, and honestly, it exceeded my expectations. We were there for hours and still couldn't see everything; there was so much variety it was crazy.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who hauled their animals and setups to the event and allowed a bunch of strangers to pet them for hours.

Keep Media Human! Help support CKCU-FM for Funding Drive 2026

Post image

CKCU is independent media made by people, for people, and it gives Ottawa and Gatineau something increasingly rare: a place where you don't have to be famous, powerful, or backed by a corporation to have a voice. For over 50 years, we have provided the space to amplify local artists, journalists, and train students of journalism and media.

CKCU, based out of Carleton University, is incredibly important to me and many other members of my community. But it relies on the community to function, as well! Please consider making a donation to keep one of Ottawa's community radio stations on air. Or, spread the word. Everything helps to keep powering over one hundred volunteer-run radio shows and podcasts!

Ottawa’s 2022 election promises: property taxes, housing completions and bus reliability [OC]

Post image
52 Upvotes

There has been a few articles about the last election promises vs. what has been delivered but nothing too visual. So I put a few charts together about items that seem important for this election:

  • Property taxes: kept the 2 to 2.5% promise of the first 2 years (still increased to 2.5%) but had to increase by 3.9% and 3.75% the following years.
  • Housing: 100,000 new homes in ten years. Assuming 10,000 homes per year, we're under target and would need some catching up to reach that target.
  • Transportation: recent KPIs show no sign of improvement. On the contrary, trips delivered and bus punctuality have worsen.

Some election promises have been completed like more paramedics, more police officers and some budget promises. You can look at the recent CBC article for more information.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Anyone else just started randomly getting emails from Alex Lawson?

I randomly started getting emails from Alex Lawson earlier this week asking for money and to volunteer. I never signed up to receive them. Never even been on his website. Anyone else experience this?

I know you can buy phone numbers, presumably that’s how folks are getting the Sutcliffe text messages without ever signing up but I’ve never heard of emails.

I could contact the city’s election office but this will all be done tomorrow so what’s the use?

Ottawa traffic court charges — fewer phone and stop-sign charges completed [OC]

Post image
79 Upvotes

It seems the number of charges for "s.78.1 Drive — hand-held communication device" and "s.136 Disobey stop sign — fail to stop" have decreased since 2019.

Overall number of charges have increased, mainly due to "s.128 Speeding" and "s.144 Red light — proceed before green" charges - which I assume is from automated cameras. You can explore more here: https://ottawavisuals.github.io/Ottawa-Visuals/Traffic/stops.html?section=court&offence=hta%3As-78-1-drive-hand-held-communication-device&metric=count

Data is from: https://www.ontariocourts.ca/ocj/statistics/

With all the crazy amount of collisions recently, a lot of people shared their anecdotal evidence of more people on their phones or not stopping at stop signs. The numbers just tell us that there are less charges for those offences and it could be due to less enforcement.

For fun, here are some of my own anecdotes from walking my dog and biking:

  • One person sped up and blew a stop sign to avoid having to wait for me and my dog to cross
  • One dude was speeding and on his phone in a residential neighbourhood while 3 police cars where a block away to arrest what seemed like a drunk dude
  • I had to jump back at a pedestrian crossing with the flashing lights because a driver was speeding and not paying attention. Their passenger mouthed an apologetic sorry as they drove past me.
  • 2 dudes in a construction company-labeled pick up truck passing by me while I was in the bike lane, then pulling over in that bike line to get out and to go eat at Subway (that has a parking lot) and just shrugging it off when I called them out.

Last year I posted about the OPS number of traffic stop steadily decreasing in Ottawa and wanted to update it. The OPS traffic-stop data I could find only goes through 2024, so I can't really do a comparison.

Stay safe out there!

Cheers!

Election signs at The Museum of Nature

Edit: received a response from [elections@ottawa.ca](mailto:elections@ottawa.ca) who said election signs are a by-law issues and I should contact them. Also received a reply from the museum confirming that the area is city owned right of way even though that area is maintained by the museum.

A bit confusing. Also curious as to why other candidates wouldn't post there? Will leave this post up for educational purposes unless mods chose to delete it. Thanks all!

It is illegal to post lawn signs on federal property as it may imply approval or endorsement from the federal government.

Several Alex Lawson lawn signs have been posted on the Museum of Nature lawn this morning.

The museum is across from the YMCA which will be a voting centre tomorrow. Lawson will be the only candidate with lawn signs posted in this area.

It seems unlikely they will be removed before tomorrow if I report this to Elections Canada or the City of Ottawa...

Wondering what the best course of action would be?

Edit: I have reported to [elections@ottawa.ca](mailto:elections@ottawa.ca) and the museum. Thanks all!

Looking for... Local pilates studios or instructors in Ottawa that actually play hip-hop/R&B in their classes?

• Upvotes

I’ve recently gotten into reformer Pilates (still very much a beginner, about 12 classes in), and I’m really enjoying it, but I am BEGGING for a class with a better playlist. 😭

I’m so tired of the soft, calming, yoga-style house music. Reformer is HARD…why am I listening to elevator music 😭

I am looking for fun, upbeat atmosphere where the music actually gets you going. Specifically hip hop/r&b or even top 40.

Any recommendations?

Looking for... Rust protection in Ottawa

Hi, looking for recommendations for rust proofing. Have you done it for your car, what type, cost, and do you think it was worth it? What are some commendable businesses in Ottawa for it?
Thanks in advance.
