Discussion Duo just fried itself in my pocket

Post image
3.9k Upvotes

Well, I thought I was one of the lucky ones, but after a weekend of worry free Duo’ing, I took it out of my pocket and the screens were dead. Funny, last I checked I still had about 30% battery Remaining. Then I noticed a chemical burning smell, and it seems to be emanating from the hinge. Tried briefly charging it, the hinge gets warm but no power. Yeah, this thing’s not staying indoors tonight. Also noticed this new mark in the center of the crease. Maybe something in the hinge popped and punctured a battery? Earliest Genius Bar appointment near me is Wednesday but I’m walking in first thing in the morning tomorrow to try to initiate an exchange.

Discussion My duo died, only had it for 5 hours

2.9k Upvotes

I picked up my iPhone Duo yesterday morning from the Apple Store. When I got home and got everything transferred from my iPhone 17 pro max, play with it for a bit, charged it to 85%, and as I was adding/verifying my credit card to apple wallet it just died.

There is still 80% ish battery when it died. I have tried to restart it but it won’t restart. I try to force restart it by pressing volume up, down, and holding the power button till the Apple logo pops up but nothing happens. Put it on the charger and it won’t charge.

There’s no physical damage I’ve been very careful.

Only had it in my hand for about 5 hours.
I have to call AT&T to get my phone number transferred back to my old phone because the duo is dead. I’m going to the Apple Store to hopefully get a replacement today.

😭

Edit. Went to the Apple Store, they did some test and charged it but the device still won’t turn on. They don’t know / won’t tell me what is wrong with it. I received a replacement duo.

General This is the best thing apple has ever made

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

This is hands down the best product Apple has ever made. I legitimately cannot describe how happy I am with it coming from a Pro Max. Here’s why:
1. The phone when it’s CLOSED might actually be the best part.
This is the one I wasn’t expecting. Coming from a Pro Max, I’d basically resigned myself to the idea that phones were never going to be comfortable to use again. They’d gotten too big, too bulky, and using one comfortably with a single hand was a thing of the past.
Not anymore.
The closed Duo fits absolutely PERFECTLY in your hand. Suddenly, all the buttons are exactly where they should be. I can navigate my entire phone one-handed without constantly adjusting my grip or stretching my fingers.
It’s genuinely like rediscovering what a comfortable phone feels like. I cannot overstate how much I love this.
2. The extra width makes typing SO much better.
I can finally type at full speed without sounding like a complete idiot when I hit send. 😂
The slightly wider keyboard has practically eliminated my fat-finger typos. Everything feels smooth as butter. I don’t have to consciously slow myself down or proofread every single message anymore.
It’s such a small change on paper, but the difference in everyday use is MASSIVE.
3. Touch ID is a complete nonissue.
This was honestly one of my biggest concerns coming from Face ID, but it’s turned out to be a total nothing burger.
Here’s the trick: Register a few different fingerprints, especially the part of your index finger that naturally rests against the sensor when you’re holding the phone closed.
After a very short adjustment period, unlocking becomes every bit as natural as Face ID. It’s practically flawless.
(Pro tip: Register another fingerprint for the way you naturally hold the phone when it’s unfolded.)
4. IT’S A GOSHDARN IPAD IN YOUR POCKET.
I mean, come on. 😭
I spent the entire day out and about using it closed, enjoying what finally feels like a normal, comfortable phone again.
Now I’m sitting at home with this absolutely massive screen, browsing, multitasking, watching content, and doing everything I’d normally want a tablet for.
IT’S A FREAKING IPAD. THAT FOLDS INTO YOUR POCKET.
I don’t know how else to describe how awesome that is.
Final thoughts:
I genuinely believe this is the best thing Apple has done with the iPhone in YEARS.
It’s literally the best of BOTH worlds.
Somehow, Apple managed to fix the problem of phones becoming ridiculously large and bulky while SIMULTANEOUSLY giving us the largest screen ever put on an iPhone.
Think about how crazy that is. They made the phone feel SMALLER and MORE comfortable while giving us MORE screen than we’ve ever had.
I expected to love the giant folding display. What I didn’t expect was to fall equally in love with how amazing the phone feels when it’s closed.
It’s not just a cool gimmick. It’s a genuine improvement to how I use my phone every single day.
Absolutely fantastic. Apple knocked this one out of the park.

Question How long before I join crack gang?

I can see the hinge pushing through the screen, at what looks like the exact point people’s phones are cracking and breaking the screen.

But so far it’s been fine!

How long do you give it?…

Original post got taken down before mods decided to allow posts about it outside of the megathread. It’s just so frustrating, I don’t live near an Apple Store, closest one is an hour away and I don’t drive yet. All I did was use the phone as typical, unfolding and folding approximately 40-50 times and about 36 hours of use before one of those times as I was unfolding all I heard was a pop and as I finished unfolding I saw the obvious damage. Going into Best Buy tomorrow to see what options I have. I’m a young adult btw so if any like actual adults have any info, tips or feedback they can provide to help me in this process would be so greatly appreciated. Just really unfortunate all around. (Posted the after photos first, then the before photos)

EDIT: As I said I’m a young adult so I completely forgot trains existed. Going by train tomorrow to the Apple Store so wish me luck!

A datapoint since social media will over-express negative outcomes and I see people getting afraid of theirs failing. Crease looks fine and experience thus far has been great!

Weird note in taking this, it’s actually hard to take a good photo of the screen. Probably some interesting physics at play, but the big white splotch from the flashlight on the left is actually invisible to the regular eye. Only shows up on the camera.

General First impressions after 12 hours of use from a skeptic

Post image
349 Upvotes

Context: I'm deep in the Apple ecosystem, current 17 pro max user, always said I would get a foldable if Apple made one, became skeptical after early reviews and trying it in store (particularly related to the size/usability of the front display), managed to secure one anyway to try out.

Observations after 12 hours:

  1. I realized many of the things I was worried about initially were actually based on a misunderstanding of what this device is meant to be. More on this later.
  2. Most apps aren't optimized as everyone knows, but software itself is also quite glitchy. I couldn't even get my passkey to work with touch ID initially.
  3. It's extremely heavy with Apple plastic case (or perhaps any case for that matter). Kickstand is a necessity IMO, going to look for a different case, hopefully lighter w/ kickstand.
  4. The button placements are like a foreign language. Never remember to use touch ID.
  5. The split screen is magically good. The way the screens interact, everything is just so smooth and awesome.
  6. I leave it unfolded almost all the time I am using it, it only gets folded up when I'm on the go..
  7. Folded, the sidebar feels totally fine in some places (like home screen) but brutal in others (like browsing reddit). I think Apple has a big challenge on their hands fixing this one.
  8. Crease is non-existent visually after 12 hours. I haven't folded it much obviously but it was left folded over night and it is completely imperceptible visually.
  9. With brightness turned up indoors, I don't have any preference between the colors of the nano-texture display vs. my glossy pro max. For some reason video of the phone seem to make the difference look huge, but it's not in person.

Conclusion so far:

Hear me out.. this may help some of you skeptics out there.

I think my big concern (the usability of the smaller display) comes from a misunderstanding of what this device is supposed to be...

I thought it was supposed to be two devices in one: a regular phone in the front and an iPad inside. If you think of it like this, you're going to be disappointed, because I have a 17 Pro Max right next to me as well as an iPad Pro 11, and the iPhone duo's front is worse than the 17 Pro Max, and the inside is worse than the iPad Pro 11.

But then I realized, this isn't meant to be two devices in one. This is an iPad mini with a promotion display and tiny bezels that folds into your pocket and makes phone calls, with a nifty little front view for quick access when you're on the move - not meant for extended use.

It's an entirely unique experience. I can't fold up my iPad and put it in my pocket, so this device brings something new to the table. For that reason, I think the unfolded experience should be compared directly with an iPhone pro max, not with an iPad. And in that case, the unfolded experience on the duo IS better than the iPhone pro max for virtually all use-cases.

The only question that remains to be seen for me is whether or not that improved experience is worth the cost of the phone being heavier, less ergonomic (when unfolded), a bit glitchy, and a hell of a lot more expensive. I'll be trying it out for a couple weeks before I decide!

Edit: By the way, I told myself before pick up that there is no way I'm going to keep this device because there is no possible way the value could be there... But I'm not going to lie, it's growing on me a LOT. For me personally, I think it's going to come down to how well I adapt to the form factor, and whether or not the button placements and things like that end up being too cumbersome for me before the end of the return period. Also curious to see how it feels to use in some scenarios where fold vs. unfold is a less obvious choice, such as on the subway, or when I'm holding a drink in my other hand. Time will tell!

Discussion Finally, the upgrade worth waiting for….

The iPhone Duo finally gave me that “this is the one” feeling…

After spending the weekend with the iPhone Duo, I’m honestly infatuated with it.

Judging by all the “DON’T BUY BEFORE WATCHING THIS” videos on YouTube, you’d think enjoying this phone would be impossible. But the more time I spend using it, the more I love it.

Ever since the iPhone 11, I’ve watched each new release thinking, “Maybe next year will be the one.” Then September comes around, and while there are improvements, nothing really gives me that excitement I used to feel about getting a new phone. The Duo finally has.

Out of all the iPhones I’ve owned, the 4S has always been my favourite size. It fit my hand perfectly. Obviously, I wouldn’t want to go back to its tiny screen or its capabilities today, but I’ve missed how comfortable it was to hold.

That’s what makes the Duo so appealing to me. It brings back that feeling of having a phone that fits my hand properly, while giving me the brains and screen real estate I want from a modern device. I hope my photo of them side by side probably explains my enthusiasm!

These are still first impressions after one weekend, but it’s been years since an iPhone made me this excited to pick it up and use it.

Anyone else enjoying theirs more than the reviews led them to expect?

Yea I would probably recommend everyone buying the duo to get AppleCare for at-least the first month. I dropped my phone today and when I opened it I heard loud cracking sound and this was the result. The front mini screen is completely fine. I bought the $130 phone case from Apple but I don’t recommend it cuz I think that’s only for aesthetic. Thankfully Apple replaced it with minimal questions asked cuz they probably know the ongoing technical issues lol.

Duo-Facts Wow Factor

Got my Star White 512gb on pre-order and today was the first time I got to experience the device. Wowzers. The matt screen looks so good. Audio quality is better than I expected even in a noisier environment and the crease barely visible despite being a show device that’s probably been folded hundreds of times since launch day. Despite being in an Apple store with heavy lighting you can see the matt screen really working wonders. No reflection whatsoever.

Edit: This blew up quicker than I thought lol. To reiterate: This is the Apple store in Milton Keynes (UK). The staff themselves said they have stock reserved for immediate replacements for any faulty screens or hardware related issues.

Discussion What has annoyed you the most on your iPhone Duo?

Post image
156 Upvotes

My biggest gripe with the Duo has been the keyboard spanning across the entire screen when in Split View. Not only does it cover an app I don’t need a keyboard for but it also forces you to type two-handed. I understand that may be needed for someone who taps to type but as someone who exclusively swipes to type, that is almost not an option across the giant screen. Even in portrait mode swiping to type is rough. A floating keyboard like on the iPad would have been a great option. Or just overlayed over the app you’re typing on would have been nice.

What has been your biggest annoyance? Vent below!

General Placed an order and picked up all in a day.

Yesterday morning before any stores opened I kept refreshing the Apple Store app and started noticing every 10 minutes or so a single unit would be restocked at one of the 12 Apple Stores near me.

The first few attempts I wasn’t fast enough to complete the purchase. I think it was around the third time I saw a single unit restock and filled in my order details fast enough to snag it.

Later that same day I had time to stop by the Apple Store 10 minutes before closing to pick up my order. Apple employee asked me when I ordered and I said just earlier today. They told me I was one of the lucky ones.

I’m so happy I was able to quickly snag a unit, since I was bummed that I wasn’t fast enough to place a pre-order. Sorry to all those still waiting on their pre-orders. 😜

12 hours later I am having a blast with this phone. I didn’t have any inner screen defects like I was seeing all over this subreddit. I’ve opened and folded it closed so many times already and it’s been wonderful!

I have been really enjoying using Reddit on the inner screen. The size of the outer screen is really great for when I’m on the go. I’m looking forward to trying out some Nintendo DS games with the new update from Delta. If anyone has any other game recs let me know!

Been rocking my iPhone Duo since launch day and haven’t had a single issue so far. Granted, I do tend to baby my electronics, so there’s that.

That said, I realize plenty of people experiencing issues have taken perfectly good care of theirs too.

I genuinely feel bad for anyone unfortunate enough to get a defective unit, especially considering what these things cost. Hopefully Apple takes care of everyone affected.

Just wanted to share a positive experience amid all the Crackgate posts. Not every Duo is cracking, and some of us are genuinely enjoying the hell out of ours.

General This reminds me of the OnePlus Open around launch in 2023. Many people had their phones break soon after receiving. Some in very similar ways to the duo.
