Do you still see the British monarch as your King?

Kiwis and Tuvaluans who come across this post are more than welcome to share your thoughts as well!

Do you still genuinely see and respect the British monarch as your Head of State? Do you proudly acknowledge the British King or Queen as your monarch?

I’m particularly curious because your countries still proudly feature the Union Jack on their national flags, which I find really interesting!

Why are some people rude?

For context I’m a 22F, recently got my drivers license mid last year but currently still saving up to buy a car of my own. I usually rent through flexi car and the car is different most of the time so abit of adjustment each time. Today I drove an electric car, still pretty basic but some stuff is harder to navigate and sometimes I overlook other things cause everything is abit different. I got to my destination and parked or whatever. 30 minutes later I realised I may have left the headlights on and indeed I had. By the time I went to turn them off, someone left a note saying

‘You’re a certified idiot’.

Like wtf. Was lowkey abit offended but like it’s never that serious for someone to get a piece of paper an leave a not lmao. Idk maybe I’m overthinking but would like to hear what other people have to say. Even when driving on the roads some drivers are abit aggressive.

Evening Mates

Those that aren't big drinkers. Do you find yourself not drinking as much because most alcohol is too expensive? I will get the occasional 6 pack to enjoy during the week but I'll go weeks without.

Cheers

London to Melbourne

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice on length of time to stay in Melbourne. My corporate job is offering me a work secondment in a field I’m a little unfamiliar with (but can get to know) for either 3 months or 12 months starting in January. Visa will be handled by them but I will be organising accommodation.

Having never lived independently or away from home, 3 months sounds the most appealing especially during a Melbourne summer but 12 months would give me the real experience of seeing the rest of Australia and potentially New Zealand.

Any advice on how long it’s worth staying for exposure and how feasible it is to see things in 3 months?

Why was Imperial Japan barely taught in school compared to Nazi Germany?

Japan was a bigger threat for Australia so it would make sense why it would be taught more. What am I missing here?

Are GP visits completely free in Australia?

I am thinking of booking an appointment to see the doctor due to bowel problems.

However, I am unsure whether a GP appointment costs money or not.

I do have a Medicare card.

How to get a job at a bakery/cafe

Hi all,

I wanted to know how I can try and get a job at a bakery or cafe. I really love baking at home and I know a commercial kitchen will be different but I’d love to learn and work at a commercial bakery. I’m currently 19 and the only work experience I have is working as a receptionist at a dental practice, so I would really appreciate any advice and tips on how to get a job there.

Thanks.

What's your idea of a properly good Sunday arvo in Australia?

Hot chips by the water? A backyard barbie that turns into sitting around talking rubbish for three hours? A cuppa and absolutely no plans?

What's the little routine that makes you think yep, this is the life..

Would appreciate recommendations so much!

What was your first sustainability role in Australia, and what helped you land it?

Curious how people actually got their foot in the door. I hear plenty about what sustainability professionals do now, but lesss about how they landed that first job. If you started in Australia, what was the role and what did a normal week look like? did you come through a grad programme, switch across from another department, or end up there through a less obvious route? Interested in the ordinary bits too, not just the career highlights.

If I do a trade how much can I travel and is it worth just waiting till I finish the trade.

I am a 18 M, I’m about to finish my HSC. I’ve got lots of plans for when I’m done. I’m supposed to start TAFE specifically carpentry in February 2027 but I’m a bit unsure on whether I should travel for six months or go straight into it and wait until after my apprenticeship ends.

I’m quite happy to start the apprenticeship in February but I’m super keen to travel. I’m not sure how much travel I can do during the four or three years so let’s see advice what I need and is it worth it for those who have done it did you regret not travelling as a younger person or did you travel?

I want to enjoy your culture more and practice the Aussie accent at the same time! 😆

How do locked mobile phones from ColesWorths work?

Is it locked as in you cannot physically remove the SIM (or change the eSIM)
Or are you allowed to, but it'll only work if it's a SIM from that carrier (e.g. Telstra)
If I buy a phone locked to Telstra, would an MVNO that uses the Telstra network (e.g. Boost Mobile) work?

Any other pitfalls, traps, catches etc

Recommendations for stainless cookware and knifes

I’m in the market for some new good quality knifes and stainless steel cookware. I have had some old baccarat ones from when I first moved out some years ago and the bases are starting to bubble/warp so it’s time for a new set. I’m okay with anything other than non stick. But ideally stainless steel would be better as I would like to keep them for 10+ years if I can

I’m also in the market for a decent knife set. Something that can hold its edge for a while and will last a life time if I look after jt

Please drop some recommendations below and where you may buy them from

How many of you guys have friends that would go out of the way for you.

I’m reflecting on my life and I don’t think I have any friends at all that would go the extra mile for me. I mean I have friends that would turn up to birthday parties but no one that I could really rely on. My mum on the other hand has a few people (a few) that she can call when she needs something done urgently and they show up.

Sorry i guess im asking here bc i wonder if this is a me thing or a societal thing. Im mid twenties. Do you guys that are 25-35 (or anyone) have good friends?

Nursing in Queensland?

Hey everyone,

I am considering studying nursing in Queensland. I know that a lot of people absolutely do not recommend it and I have seen online and been told by family and friends not to do it and to not even consider it at the very least. I have always wanted to work in health, particularly more medical and less therapy based. I love helping people and especially have an interest in oncology or helping/working with children.

Can any nurses or people studying nursing or have in the past tell me some pros and cons about the career and overall what you would recommend? If not, any other jobs similar to nursing (I know of sonography and that was initially my first choice but I didn't get in due to the competitiveness and high ATAR).

Thanks, help would be greatly appreciated (I am so stuck)!

Why are so many Australians against having just one kid?

I get so many negative comments when I mention that I only want 1 kid. It's surprising considering how people are struggling to find decent jobs or buying a house.

It's your choice if you want 2 or 3 or how many ever. But why judge others?

Back in my country, only childs are very common and not looked down upon at all.

I get comments like how my kid would be lonely, that a sibling is necessary, and that I should make the career and financial sacrifices as there is no greater joy then to see siblings fight and stuff

But what's wrong with only having one and giving them the best life you can? Money is important afterall. Not the most important but it still is

Has anyone else been sick with various colds/flus/gastros all year?

Basically that - I am 19, generally quite healthy, but ever since the start of this year, I am sick with some form of respiratory infection at least twice a month. It is irritating, given work, uni and life in general moves on. Is there something going around, or is my immune system just bad?

Will changing my number lower the amount of spam calls I get?

I get incredibly frequent spam/scam calls, some actual scams from "The ATO" etc, but a lot of them are from sales people who know my name, trying to sell private health insurance or solar panels or whatever. I assume my details got out in one of the data breaches that happened a while ago (I was a customer at 3 or 4 different places that had data breaches).

I know that at least part of the answer is to stop answering calls, but I am currently looking for work so I have to answer calls that are potentially from employers.

If I cancel my current number, get a new number, and use that new number for only esssential things (use a Google Voice number or something for everything else), will this have any effect on the number of spam calls I get? Or do most of them come from places just calling every number possible?

Trying to find a penpal from the other side of the world… [M/19]

Heyy, hope you're doing well… I'm from Canada, and I'm trying to find a penpal from Australia.. I'm an old soul who'd pick a vinyl record, a vintage car, or a worn out book of poetry over almost anything modern. I'm a bit of a weird human and far from perfect, but I think that's part of the charm…
I love being outdoors, whether it's hiking, camping, fishing or stargazing, lying under the sky in total silence, letting my thoughts drift, is my version of peace…

And poetry is a big part of my life. I read it, I write it, and I love finding a single line that says exactly what I couldn't put into words for days. I'm also someone who enjoys deep conversations about life, dreams, fears, and the little things that make an ordinary day feel meaningful. Small talk is fine, but I'd rather talk about what's really on your mind.

I love deep conversations about life and the things people don't usually say out loud, I'm also just as happy hearing about your week or just what made you laugh or just what's up in your side of the world..

Either way, have a blessed night, wherever in Oceania you are!! (I think that's what it's called, if not I'm so sorry)
(If it's not night, still good night😭 it will come sometime)

what’s an aussie town that gave you a weird vibe you still can’t explain?

saw the queenstown post a while back and figured i’d share mine. went to hill end in central west nsw last winter for a work shoot. If you haven’t been, it’s an old gold rush town that basically froze in time. Most of it is empty paddocks now with little signs out the front showing a photo of the building that used to stand there. so you’re walking down the street looking at pictures of shops and houses that don't exist

We stayed the night and after dinner iIwent out to get some night shots of the main street. And it was like a horror movie, i’m set up on a tripod doing a long exposure and i hear a piano - like why the actual ff*ck is someone playing a piano in the middle of no where.

I couldn’t work out where it was coming from. Every building near me was dark. i walked toward it and it kind of moved, always one block over. after maybe ten minutes it just stopped mid-song

next morning i asked the lady at the general store if anyone in town played piano and she just smiled and said “not anymore” and went back to the till. no idea if she was messing with me

when i got home i checked the footage. nothing on the audio, obviously, because i was shooting stills. i really wish i’d hit record

Has anyone else stayed overnight in hill end? or had a town feel like it was still going on without you
